Normal forms in a neighborhood of hyperbolic periodic orbits for flows in dimension 3

In a neighborhood of a hyperbolic periodic orbit of a volume-preserving flow on a manifold of dimension 3, we define and show the existence of a normal form for the generator of the flow that encodes the dynamics. If the flow is a contact flow, we show the existence of a normal form for the contact form what results in an improved normal form for its Reeb vector field. Additionally, we present a few rigidity results associated to periodic data for Anosov contact flows derived from the underlying normal form theory. Finally, we establish a new local rigidity result for contact flows on manifolds of dimension 3 in a neighborhood of a hyperbolic periodic point by finding a new link between the roof function and the return map to a section.

The Zimmer Program for partially hyperbolic actions

Zimmer's superrigidity theorems on higher rank Lie groups and their lattices launched a program of study aiming to classify actions of semisimple Lie groups and their lattices, known as the {\it Zimmer program}. When the group is too large relative to the dimension of the phase space, the Zimmer conjecture predicts that the actions are all virtually trivial. At the other extreme, when the actions exhibit enough regular behavior, the actions should all be of algebraic origin. We make progress in the program by showing smooth conjugacy to a bi-homogeneous model (up to a finite cover) for volume-preserving actions of semisimple Lie groups without compact or rank one factors, which have two key assumptions: partial hyperbolicity for a large class of elements ({\it totally partial hyperbolicity}) and accessibility, a condition on the webs generated by dynamically-defined foliations. We also obtain classification for actions of higher-rank abelian groups satisfying stronger assumptions.

Slow entropy and variational dynamical systems

We define variational properties for dynamical systems with subexponential complexity, and study these properties in certain specific examples. By computing the value of slow entropy directly, we show that some subshifts are not variational, while a class of interval exchange transformations are variational.

Cartan Actions of Higher Rank Abelian Groups and their Classification

We study $\mathbb{R}^k \times \mathbb{Z}^\ell$ actions on arbitrary compact manifolds with a projectively dense set of Anosov elements and 1-dimensional coarse Lyapunov foliations. Such actions are called totally Cartan actions. We completely classify such actions as built from low-dimensional Anosov flows and diffeomorphisms and affine actions, verifying the Katok-Spatzier conjecture for this class. This is achieved by introducing a new tool, the action of a dynamically defined topological group describing paths in coarse Lyapunov foliations, and understanding its generators and relations. We obtain applications to the Zimmer program.

Entropy rigidity for 3D conservative Anosov flows and dispersing billiards

Given an integer $k \geq 5$, and a $C^k$ Anosov flow $Φ$ on some compact connected $3$-manifold preserving a smooth volume, we show that the measure of maximal entropy (MME) is the volume measure if and only if $Φ$ is $C^{k-\varepsilon}$-conjugate to an algebraic flow, for $\varepsilon>0$ arbitrarily small. Besides the rigidity, we also study the entropy flexibility, and show that the metric entropy with respect to the volume measure and the topological entropy of suspension flows over Anosov diffeomorphisms on the $2$-torus achieve all possible values subject to natural normalizations. Moreover, in the case of dispersing billiards, we show that if the measure of maximal entropy is the volume measure, then the Birkhoff Normal Form of regular periodic orbits with a homoclinic intersection is linear.

Slow entropy of higher rank abelian unipotent actions

We study slow entropy invariants for abelian unipotent actions $U$ on any finite volume homogeneous space $G/Γ$. For every such action we show that the topological slow entropy can be computed directly from the dimension of a special decomposition of $\operatorname{Lie}(G)$ induced by $\operatorname{Lie}(U)$. Moreover, we are able to show that the metric slow entropy of the action coincides with its topological slow entropy. As a corollary, we obtain that the complexity of any abelian horocyclic action is only related to the dimension of $G$. This generalizes the rank one results from [A. Kanigowski, K. Vinhage, D. Wei, Commun. Math. Phys. 370 (2019), no. 2, 449-474.] to higher rank abelian actions.

Kakutani Equivalence of Unipotent Flows

We study Kakutani equivalence in the class of unipotent flows acting on finite volume quotients of semisimple Lie groups. For every such flow we compute the Kakutani invariant of M. Ratner, the value of which being explicitly given by the Jordan block structure of the unipotent element generating the flow. This in particular answers a question of M. Ratner. Moreover it follows that the only standard unipotent flows are given by $\begin{pmatrix} 1 & t \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} \times \operatorname{id}$ acting on $(SL(2,\mathbb{R}) \times G')/Γ'$, where $Γ'$ is an irreducible lattice in $SL(2,\mathbb{R}) \times G'$ (with the possibility that $G' = \{e\}$).

Horocycle flow on negative variable curvature surface is standard

We provide a new proof that the horocycle flow preserving the Margulis measure on a variable negative curvature surface is standard. This was first proved by Ratner. The main purpose of this note is to provide a simplified case of the arguments for Kakutani equivalence of unipotent flows on homogeneous spaces, which have similar but more complicated structures, as well as illustrate the versatility of the method by applying it to a non-homogeneous flow.

Entropy rigidity and flexibility for suspension flows over Anosov diffeomorphisms

For any $C^\infty$, area-preserving Anosov diffeomorphism $f$ of a surface, we show that a suspension flow over $f$ is $C^\infty$-conjugate to a constant-time suspension flow of a hyperbolic automorphism of the two torus if and only if the volume measure is the measure with maximal entropy. We also show that the the metric entropy with respect to the volume measure and the topological entropy of suspension flow over Anosov diffeomorphisms on torus achieve all possible values. Our results fit into two programs related to entropy rigidity and flexibility of Anosov systems.

Slow Entropy of Some Parabolic Flows

We study nontrivial entropy invariants in the class of parabolic flows on homogeneous spaces, quasi-unipotent flows. We show that topological complexity (ie, slow entropy) can be computed directly from the Jordan block structure of the adjoint representation. Moreover using uniform polynomial shearing we are able to show that the metric orbit growth (ie, slow entropy) coincides with the topological one, establishing hence variational principle for quasi-unipotent flows (this also applies to the non-compact case). Our results also apply to sequence entropy. We establish criterion for a system to have trivial topological complexity and give some examples in which the measure-theoretic and topological complexities do not coincide for uniquely ergodic systems, violating the intuition of the classical variational principle.

Local Rigidity of Higher Rank Homogeneous Abelian Actions: a Complete Solution via the Geometric Method

We show local and cocycle rigidity for $\R^k \times \Z^l$ partially hyperbolic translation actions on homogeneous spaces $\mc G/ Λ$. We consider a large class of actions whose geometric properties are more complicated than previously treated cases. It is also the first time that partially hyperbolic twisted symmetric space examples have been treated in the literature. The main new ingredient in the proof is a combination of geometric method and the theory of central extensions.

On the non-equivalence of the Bernoulli and K properties in dimension four

We study skew products where the base is a hyperbolic automorphism of $\mathbb{T}^2$, the fiber is a smooth area preserving flow on $\mathbb{T}^2$ with one fixed point (of high degeneracy) and the skewing function is a smooth non coboundary with non-zero integral. The fiber dynamics can be represented as a special flow over an irrational rotation and a roof function with one power singularity. We show that for a full measure set of rotations the corresponding skew product is $K$ and not Bernoulli. As a consequence we get a natural class of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{T}^4$ which are $K$ and not Bernoulli.

On the Rigidity of Weyl Chamber Flows and Schur Multipliers as Topological Groups

We effectively conclude the local rigidity program for generic restrictions of partially hyperbolic Weyl chamber flows. Our methods replace and extend previous ones by circumventing computations made in Schur multipliers. Instead, we construct a natural topology on $H_2(G,\mathbb{Z})$, and rely on classical Lie structure theory for central extensions.
