Cladogenesis: Baryon-Dark Matter Coincidence from Branchings in Moduli Decay

We propose late-time moduli decay as the common origin of baryons and dark matter. The baryon asymmetry is produced from the decay of new TeV scale particles, while dark matter is created from the (chain) decay of R-parity odd particles without undergoing any annihilation. The baryon and dark matter abundances are mainly controlled by the dilution factor from moduli decay, which is typically in the range 10^{-9}-10^{-7}. The exact number densities are determined by simple branching fractions from modulus decay, which are expected to be of similar order in the absence of symmetries. This scenario can naturally lead to the observed baryon asymmetry and, for moderate suppression of the two-body decays of the modulus to R-parity odd particles, can also yield the correct dark matter abundance for a dark matter mass in the (5-500) GeV range.

Affleck-Dine Baryogenesis in Effective Supergravity

We investigate the viability of Affleck-Dine baryogenesis in D=4, N=1 supergravity descending from string theory. The process relies on an initial condition where visible sector supersymmetric flat directions obtain tachyonic masses during inflation. We discuss this condition for a variety of cases where supersymmetry is broken during inflation by a geometric modulus or hidden sector scalar, and outline scenarios where the initial condition is satisfied.

Baryogenesis and Late-Decaying Moduli

Late-decaying string moduli dilute the baryon asymmetry of the universe created in any previous era. The reheat temperature for such moduli is below a GeV, thus motivating baryogenesis at very low temperatures. We present an extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with TeV-scale colored fields that can yield the correct baryon asymmetry of the universe in this context. Modulus decay, which reheats the universe at a temperature below GeV, produces the visible sector fields and neutralino dark matter in non-thermal fashion. We discuss various possibilities for baryogenesis from TeV scale colored fields and show that they can generate an acceptable baryon asymmetry, while being compatible with phenomenological constraints like neutron-antineutron oscillation.

Low-scale Inflation and Supersymmetry Breaking in Racetrack Models

In many moduli stabilization schemes in string theory, the scale of inflation appears to be of the same order as the scale of supersymmetry breaking. For low-scale supersymmetry breaking, therefore, the scale of inflation should also be low, unless this correlation is avoided in specific models. We explore such a low-scale inflationary scenario in a racetrack model with a single modulus in type IIB string theory. Inflation occurs near a point of inflection in the Kähler modulus potential. Obtaining acceptable cosmological density perturbations leads to the introduction of magnetized D7-branes sourcing non-perturbative superpotentials. The gravitino mass, m_{3/2}, is chosen to be around 30 TeV, so that gravitinos that are produced in the inflaton decay do not affect big-bang nucleosynthesis. Supersymmetry is communicated to the visible sector by a mixture of anomaly and modulus mediation. We find that the two sources contribute equally to the gaugino masses, while scalar masses are decided mainly by anomaly contribution. This happens as a result of the low scale of inflation and can be probed at the LHC.

Mirage in the Sky: Non-thermal Dark Matter, Gravitino Problem, and Cosmic Ray Anomalies

Recent anomalies in cosmic rays could be due to dark matter annihilation in our galaxy. In order to get the required large cross-section to explain the data while still obtaining the right relic density, we rely on a non standard thermal history between dark matter freeze-out and Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). We show that through a reheating phase from the decay of a heavy moduli or even the gravitino, we can produce the right relic density of dark matter if its self-annihilation cross-section is large enough. In addition to fitting the recent data, this scenario solves the cosmological moduli and gravitino problems. We illustrate this mechanism with a specific example in the context of U(1)_{B-L} extended MSSM where supersymmetry is broken via mirage mediation. These string motivated models naturally contain heavy moduli decaying to the gravitino, whose subsequent decay to the LSP can reheat the universe at a low temperature. The right-handed sneutrino and the B-L gaugino can both be viable dark matter candidates with large cross-section. They are leptophilic because of B-L charges. We also show that it is possible to distinguish the non-thermal from the thermal scenario (using Sommerfeld enhancement) in direct detection experiments for certain regions of parameter space.

Metastable supersymmetry breaking and multitrace deformations of SQCD

Metastable vacua in supersymmetric QCD in the presence of single and multitrace deformations of the superpotential are explored, with the aim of obtaining an acceptable phenomenology. The metastable vacua appear at one loop, have a broken R-symmetry, and a magnetic gauge group that is completely Higgsed. With only a single trace deformation, the adjoint fermions from the meson superfield are approximately massless at one loop, even though they are massive at tree level and R-symmetry is broken. Consequently, if charged under the standard model, they are unacceptably light. A multitrace quadratic deformation generates fermion masses proportional to the deformation parameter. Phenomenologically viable models of direct gauge mediation can then be obtained, and some of their features are discussed.

Enhanced symmetry points and metastable supersymmetry breaking along pseudo-runaway directions

We construct a model with long-lived metastable vacua in which all the relevant parameters, including the supersymmetry breaking scale, are generated dynamically by dimensional transmutation. The metastable vacua appear along a pseudo-runaway direction near a point of enhanced symmetry as a result of a balance between non-perturbative and perturbative quantum effects. We show that metastable supersymmetry breaking is a rather generic feature near certain enhanced symmetry points of gauge theory moduli spaces.

Stabilizing the Runaway Quiver in Supergravity

We study stabilizations of the supersymmetry breaking runaway quiver in string embeddings. Calculations are performed in four dimensional effective supergravity. Constraints on closed string fields in a type IIA construction are given. The particular case of stabilization by stringy instanton effects in a type IIB model is considered.

Meta-Stable Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking Near Points of Enhanced Symmetry

We show that metastable supersymmetry breaking is generic near certain enhanced symmetry points of gauge theory moduli spaces. Our model consists of two sectors coupled by a singlet and combines dynamical supersymmetry breaking with an O'Raifeartaigh mechanism in terms of confined variables. All relevant mass parameters, including the supersymmetry breaking scale, are generated dynamically. The metastable vacua appear as a result of a balance between non-perturbative and perturbative quantum effects along a pseudo-runaway direction.

D-Brane Superpotentials in Calabi-Yau Orientifolds

We develop computational tools for the tree-level superpotential of B-branes in Calabi-Yau orientifolds. Our method is based on a systematic implementation of the orientifold projection in the geometric approach of Aspinwall and Katz. In the process we lay down some ground rules for orientifold projections in the derived category.

A D-Brane Landscape on Calabi-Yau Manifolds

We explore the dynamics of magnetized nonsupersymmetric D5-brane configurations on Calabi-Yau orientifolds with fluxes. We show that supergravity D-terms capture supersymmetry breaking effects predicted by more abstract Pi-stability considerations. We also examine superpotential interactions in the presence of fluxes, and investigate the vacuum structure of such configurations. Based on the shape of the potential, we argue that metastable nonsupersymmetric vacua can be in principle obtained by tuning the values of fluxes.
