Mitigating the sign problem by quantum computing

The notorious sign problem severely limits the applicability of quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, as statistical errors grow exponentially with system size and inverse temperature. A recent proposal of a quantum-computing stochastic series expansion (qc-SSE) method suggested that the problem could be avoided by introducing constant energy shifts into the Hamiltonian. Here we critically examine this framework and show that it does not strictly resolve the sign problem for Hamiltonians with non-commuting terms. Instead, it provides a practical mitigation strategy that suppresses the occurrence of negative weights. Using the antiferromagnetic anisotropic XY chain as a test case, we analyze the dependence of the average sign on system size, temperature, anisotropy, and shift parameters. An operator contraction method is introduced to improve efficiency. Our results demonstrate that moderate shifts optimally balance sign mitigation and statistical accuracy, while large shifts amplify errors, leaving the sign problem unresolved but alleviated.

Work statistics and thermal phase transitions

The investigation of nonequilibrium thermodynamics in quantum many-body systems underscores the importance of quantum work, which differs from its classical counterpart due to its statistical nature. Recent studies have shown that quantum work can serve as an effective indicator of quantum phase transitions in systems subjected to sudden quenches. However, the potential of quantum work to identify thermal phase transitions remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we examine several types of thermal phase transitions in a sudden-quench hard-core boson model, including Ising, three-state Potts, and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions. Through finite-size scaling analysis, we conclude that work statistics can also characterize the critical behaviors of thermal phase transitions in generic many-body systems. Our investigation paves the way for applying work statistics to characterize critical behavior in many-body systems, with implications that may extend to broader contexts.

Unsupervised learning of phase transitions via modified anomaly detection with autoencoders

In this paper, a modified method of anomaly detection using convolutional autoencoders is employed to predict phase transitions in several statistical mechanical models on a square lattice. We show that, when the autoencoder is trained with input data of various phases, the mean-square-error loss function can serve as a measure of disorder, and its standard deviation becomes an excellent indicator of critical points. We find that various types of phase transition points, including first-order, second-order, and topological ones, can be faithfully detected by the peaks in the standard deviation of the loss function. Besides, the values of transition points can be accurately determined under the analysis of finite-size scaling. Our results demonstrate that the present approach has general application in identification/classification of phase transitions even without a priori knowledge of the systems in question.

Staggered quantum phases of dipolar bosons at finite temperatures

The extended Bose-Hubbard model with correlated tunneling exhibits staggered superfluid and supersolid quantum phases. We study finite-temperature phase transitions of quantum phases of dipolar bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice using Gutzwiller mean-field and quantum Monte Carlo approaches. When nearest-neighbor repulsion is comparable to the on-site interaction, we find that the two topologically distinct superfluids are separated by a normal fluid phase, while at stronger off-site interactions, density-modulated insulating quantum phases appear. We estimate the critical temperature of the staggered superfluid to normal fluid transition and show that this transition is of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type. Finally, we elucidate the coexistence of staggered quantum phases in the presence of an external trapping potential. Our study paves a way to observe novel staggered quantum phases in recent dipolar optical lattice experiments.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition from Neural Network Flows

We adopt the neural network flow (NN flow) method to study the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transitions of the 2-dimensional q-state clock model with $q\ge 4$. The NN flow consists of a sequence of the same units to proceed the flow. This unit is a variational autoencoder (VAE) trained by the data of Monte-Carlo configurations in the way of unsupervised learning. To gauge the difference among the ensembles of Monte-Carlo configurations at different temperatures and the uniqueness of the ensemble of NN-flowed states, we adopt the Jesen-Shannon divergence (JSD) as the information-distance measure "thermometer". This JSD thermometer compares the probability distribution functions of the mean magnetization of two ensembles of states. Our results show that the NN flow will flow an arbitrary spin state to some state in a fixed-point ensemble of states. The corresponding JSD of the fixed-point ensemble takes a unique profile with peculiar features, which can help to identify the critical temperatures of BKT phase transitions of the underlying Monte-Carlo configurations.

Frustration induced incommensurate solids in the extended Bose-Hubbard model

We study the extended Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor $(V, V')$ repulsive interactions on a square lattice by using the quantum Monte Carlo method. Unlike the case of strong $V'$ where the ground states can be striped solids or striped supersolids, we focus on weak $V' < V/2$ and small hoppings and find that, in the thermodynamic limit, incommensurate solids of fractional densities varying from 1/4 to 1/2 can be stabilized. We also show that the incommensurate solids, which are characterized by a continuous set of wave vectors changing from $(π,π/2)$ (or $(π/2,π)$) to $(π,π)$, can be understood by a mechanism of domain wall formation. The related ground-state phase diagram and thermal phase transitions are also discussed.

Field-Induced Quantum Phases in Frustrated Spin-Dimer Model: A Sign-Problem-Free Quantum Monte Carlo Study

The magnetization process of a frustrated spin-1/2 spin-dimer model on a square lattice is investigated by means of a sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo algorithm developed recently. Rich field-induced quantum phases are discovered. We find two spin superfluids satisfying different symmetries upon layer permutation. There exist as well two solid phases with distinct checkerboard patterns. Besides, two kinds of spin supersolids are observed over a finite regime of magnetic fields. The latter two phases can be stabilized when small but nonzero spin anisotropy is present. Various field-induced transitions among these phases are explored. Our findings may provide guidance to the search of these interesting quantum phases in real frustrated spin-dimer compounds.

Valence bond supersolid in a bilayer extended Bose Hubbard model

The hardcore extended Bose Hubbard model on a bilayer square lattice with attractive (repulsive) interplane (intraplane) interactions has been investigated numerically. Focusing on the strong interplane hopping parameter regime, triplet valence bonds of dimers are stabilized to form valence bond checkerboard solid at quarter filling. Increasing the particle number we confirm, for the first time, the presence of the exotic valence bond supersolid phase, where the valence bond solid ordering and the boson superfluidity coexist. Rising further the particle number will lead to a checkerboard solid of dimer pair at half filling for strong intraplane repulsion, or a valence bond Mott insulator for weak repulsive interactions. We analyze the rich ground state phase diagrams of this model, which can be experimentally realized in optical lattices of cold atoms.

Quantum phase transitions in attractive extended Bose-Hubbard Model with three-body constraint

The effect of nearest-neighbor repulsion on the ground-state phase diagrams of three-body constrained attractive Bose lattice gases is explored numerically. When the repulsion is turned on, in addition to the uniform Mott insulating state and two superfluid phases (the atomic and the dimer superfluids), a dimer checkerboard solid state appears at unit filling, where boson pairs form a solid with checkerboard structure. We find also that the first-order transitions between the uniform Mott insulating state and the atomic superfluid state can be turned into the continuous ones as the repulsion is increased. Moreover, the stability regions of the dimer superfluid phase can be extended to modest values of the hopping parameter by tuning the strength of the repulsion. Our conclusions hence shed light on the search of the dimer superfluid phase in real ultracold Bose gases in optical lattices.

Thermal Phase transitions in attractive extended Bose-Hubbard Model with three-body constraint

By means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations implemented with a two-loop update scheme, the finite-temperature phase diagram of a three-body constrained attractive Bose lattice gas is investigated. The nature of the thermal phase transitions around the dimer superfluid and the atomic superfluid is unveiled. We find that the $Z_2$ symmetry-breaking transitions between these two superfluid phases are of first order even at nonzero temperatures. More interestingly, the thermal transition from the dimer superfluid to the normal fluid is found to be consistent with the Kosterlitz-Thouless type but giving an anomalous universal stiffness jump. It demonstrates that this transition is driven by unbinding of pairs of fractional vortices.

Thermal phase transitions of supersolids in the extended Bose-Hubbard model

We investigate numerically the finite-temperature phase diagrams of the extended Bose-Hubbard model in a two-dimensional square lattice. In particular, we focus on the melting of supersolid phases of two different crystal orderings, stripe and star orders, arising from the competition of the nearest- and next-nearest -neighbor interactions in the vicinity of quarter filling. The two crystal orders are the result of broken translational symmetry in either one or in both $x$, and $y$ directions. The broken gauge symmetry of the supersolids are found to be restored via a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition while the broken translational symmetries are restored via a single second-order phase transition, instead of two second-order transitions in the Ising universality class. On the other hand, the phase transitions between the star and stripe orders are first order in nature.

Phase diagrams of XXZ model on depleted square lattice

Using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations and a mean field (MF) theory, we investigate the spin-1/2 XXZ model with nearest neighbor interactions on a periodic depleted square lattice. In particular, we present results for 1/4 depleted lattice in an applied magnetic field and investigate the effect of depletion on the ground state. The ground state phase diagram is found to include an antiferromagnetic (AF) phase of magnetization $m_{z}=\pm 1/6$ and an in-plane ferromagnetic (FM) phase with finite spin stiffness. The agreement between the QMC simulations and the mean field theory based on resonating trimers suggests the AF phase and in-plane FM phase can be interpreted as a Mott insulator and superfluid of trimer states respectively. While the thermal transitions of the in-plane FM phase are well described by the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, the quantum phase transition from the AF phase to in-plane FM phase undergo a direct second order insulator-superfluid transition upon increasing magnetic field.

Quarter-filled supersolid and solid phases in the extended Bose-Hubbard model

We numerically study the ground state phase diagram of the two-dimensional hard-core Bose-Hubbard model with nearest ($V_1$) and next nearest neighbor ($V_2$) repulsions. In particular, we focus on the quarter-filled phases where one supersolid and two solid phases are observed. Using both canonical and grand canonical quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods and a mean field calculation, we confirm the existence of a \textit{commensurate} supersolid at quarter boson filling. The nature of the commensurate supersolid will be discussed. Only one kind of the supersolid phase is found energetically stable despite of the two possible diagonal long range orderings for the solid phase. The competition between the two solid phases manifests as a first order phase transition around $2 V_2\sim V_1$. The change of order parameters as functions of the chemical function is also presented.

Supersolid phases in the extended boson hubbard model

We present a comprehensive numerical study on the ground state phase diagram of the two-dimensional hardcore boson extended Hubbard model with nearest ($V_1$) and next nearest neighbor ($V_2$) repulsions. In addition to the quantum solid and superfluid phases, we report the existence of striped supersolid and three-quarter (quarter) filled supersolid at commensurate density $ρ=0.75$ (0.25) due to the interplay of $V_1$ and $V_2$ interactions. The nature of three-quarter filled supersolid and the associated quantum solid will be discussed. Quantum phase transition between the two supersolids of different symmetries is observed and is clearly of first order.

Supersolid phase in spin dimer XXZ systems under magnetic field

Using quantum Monte Carlo method, we study, under external magnetic fields, the ground state phase diagram of the two-dimensional spin $S$=1/2 dimer model with an anisotropic intra-plane antiferromagnetic coupling. With the anisotropy $4 \gtrsim Δ\gtrsim 3$, a supersolid phase characterized by a non-uniform bose condensate density that breaks translational symmetry is found. The rich phase diagram also contains a checkerboard solid and two different types of superfluid phase formed by $S_z=+1$ and $S_z=0$ spin triplets, with finite staggered magnetization in z-axis and in-plane direction, respectively. As we show, the model can be realized as a consequence of including the next nearest neighbor coupling among dimers and our results suggest that spin dimer systems may be an ideal model system to study the supersolid phase.

Numerical study of magnetic field induced ordering in BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ and related systems

Thermodynamics of spin dimer system BaCuSi_2O_6 is studied using a quantum Monte Carlo calculation (QMC) and a bond-operator mean field theory. We propose that a new type of boson, which, rather than being hard-core, allows up to two occupancy at each site, is responsible for the Bose Einstein condensation of field induced ordering. Its superfluid density is identified as the square of the in-plane staggered magnetization m_{xy} in the ordered phase. We also compare our QMC result of the spin Heisenberg model to those predicted by mean field theory as well as by the simple hard core boson model for both large and small intra-dimer coupling J. The asymmetry of the phase diagram of m_{xy}(h) of small coupling J in related systems such as NiCl_2-4SC(NH_2)_2 is explained with our new boson operator.

The role of spin-orbit coupling for the superconducting state in Sr_2RuO_4

The odd-parity spin-triplet Cooper pairing states show a six-fold degeneracy for a quasi-two-dimensional electron system. In this article we show how spin-orbit coupling can lift this degeneracy for Sr_2RuO_4 taking the band structure based on the three relevant t_{2g}-orbitals of the Ru-ions into account. The stabilized state depends on the relative strength of the pairing interaction. We show that under reasonable assumptions the chiral pairing state d(k) = z(k_x +/- i k_y) is favored against the others.

Theory of Excitons in Insulating Cu-Oxide Plane

We use a local model to study the formation and the structure of the low energy charge transfer excitations in the insulating Cu-O$_2$ plane. The elementary excitation is a bound exciton of spin singlet, consisting of a Cu$^+$ and a neighboring spin singlet of Cu-O holes. The exciton can move through the lattice freely without disturbing the antiferromagnetic spin background, in contrast to the single hole motion. There are four eigen-modes of excitons with different symmetry. The p-wave-like exciton has a large dispersion width. The s-wave-like exciton mixes with p-state at finite momentum, and its dipole transition intensity is strongly anisotropic. The model is in excellent agreement with the electron energy loss spectra in the insulating Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$.
