Universal Approximation on the Hypersphere

It is well known that any continuous probability density function on $\mathbb{R}^m$ can be approximated arbitrarily well by a finite mixture of normal distributions, provided that the number of mixture components is sufficiently large. The von-Mises-Fisher distribution, defined on the unit hypersphere $S^m$ in $\mathbb{R}^{m+1}$, has properties that are analogous to those of the multivariate normal on $\mathbb{R}^{m+1}$. We prove that any continuous probability density function on $S^m$ can be approximated to arbitrary degrees of accuracy by a finite mixture of von-Mises-Fisher distributions.

Some sharp isoperimetric-type inequalities on Riemannian manifolds

We prove some sharp isoperimetric type inequalities for domains with smooth boundary on Riemannian manifolds. For example, using generalized convexity, we show that among all domains with a lower bound $l$ for the cut distance and Ricci curvature lower bound $(n-1)k$, the geodesic ball of radius $l$ in the space form of curvature $k$ has the largest area-to-volume ratio. A similar but reversed inequality holds if we replace a lower bound on the cut distance by a lower bound of the mean curvature. As an application we show that $C^2$ isoperimetric domains in standard space forms are balls. Generalized convexity also provides a simple proof of Toponogov theorem. We also prove another isoperimetric inequality involving the extrinsic radius of a domain when the curvature of the ambient space is bounded above. We then extend this inequality in two directions: one involves the higher order mean curvatures, and the other involves the Hausdorff measure of the cut locus.

Quantitative comparison theorems in Riemannian and Kähler geometry

We obtain sharp quantitative Laplacian upper and lower estimates under no assumption on curvatures. As a result, we derive quantitative Laplacian, area and volume comparison theorems for tubes in Riemannian and Kähler manifolds under weak integral curvature assumptions. We also give some applications, such as a general Bonnet-Myers theorem and Cheng's eigenvalue estimate under weak integral curvature assumptions.

Weighted isoperimetric inequalities in warped product manifolds

We prove some isoperimetric type inequalities in warped product manifolds, or more generally, multiply warped product manifolds. We then relate them to inequalities involving the higher order mean-curvature integrals. We also apply our results to obtain sharp eigenvalue estimates and some sharp geometric inequalities in space forms.

Weighted Hsiung-Minkowski formulas and rigidity of umbilical hypersurfaces

We use the weighted Hsiung-Minkowski integral formulas and Brendle's inequality to show new rigidity results. First, we prove Alexandrov type results for closed embedded hypersurfaces with radially symmetric higher order mean curvature in a large class of Riemannian warped product manifolds, including the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström spaces, where the Alexandrov reflection principle is not available. Second, we prove that, in Euclidean space, the only closed immersed self-expanding solitons to the weighted generalized inverse curvature flow of codimension one are round hyperspheres.

A functional inequality on the boundary of static manifolds

On the boundary of a compact Riemannian manifold $(Ω, g)$ whose metric $g$ is static, we establish a functional inequality involving the static potential of $(Ω, g)$, the second fundamental form and the mean curvature of the boundary $\partial Ω$ respectively.

An extension of Hsiung-Minkowski formulas and its applications

We prove a generalization of Hsiung-Minkowski formulas for closed submanifolds in semi-Riemannian manifolds with constant curvature. As a corollary, we obtain volume and area upper bounds for k-convex hypersurfaces in terms of a weighted total k-th mean curvature of the hypersurface. We also obtain some Alexandrov-type results and eigenvalue estimates for hypersurfaces.

On the positivity of a quasi-local mass in general dimensions

In this paper, we obtain a positivity result of a quasi-local mass integral as proposed by Shi and Tam in general dimensions. The main argument is based on the monotonicity of a mass integral in a foliation of quasi-spherical metrics and a positive mass type theorem which was proved by Wang and Yau in the three dimensional case, and is shown here in higher dimensions using spinor methods.

On an inequality of Andrews, De Lellis and Topping

Using the method of De Lellis-Topping, we prove some almost Schur type results. For example, one of our results gives a quantitative measure of how close the higher mean curvature of a submanifold is to its average value. We also derive another sharp Andrews-De Lellis-Topping type inequality involving the Riemannian curvature tensor and discuss its equality case.

A New Monotone Quantity along the Inverse Mean Curvature Flow in $\mathbb R^n$

We find a new monotone increasing quantity along smooth solutions to the inverse mean curvature flow in $\mathbb R^n$. As an application, we derive a sharp geometric inequality for mean convex, star-shaped hypersurfaces which relates the volume enclosed by a hypersurface to a weighted total mean curvature of the hypersurface.

Limit of quasilocal mass integrals in asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds

In this paper, we will show that the limit of some quasilocal mass integrals of the coordinate spheres in an asymptotically hyperbolic (AH) manifold is the mass integral of the AH manifold. This is the analogue of the well known result that the limit of the Brown-York mass of coordinate spheres is the ADM mass in an asymptotically flat manifold.
