Lipschitz and bi-Lipschitz maps from PI spaces to Carnot groups

This paper deals with the problem of finding bi-Lipschitz behavior in non-degenerate Lipschitz maps between metric measure spaces. Specifically, we study maps from (subsets of) Ahlfors regular PI spaces into sub-Riemannian Carnot groups. We prove that such maps have many bi-Lipschitz tangents, verifying a conjecture of Semmes. As a stronger conclusion, one would like to know whether such maps decompose into countably many bi-Lipschitz pieces. We show that this is true when the Carnot group is Euclidean. For general Carnot targets, we show that the existence of a bi-Lipschitz decomposition is equivalent to a condition on the geometry of the image set.

Lower bounds for codimension-1 measure in metric manifolds

We establish Euclidean-type lower bounds for the codimension-1 Hausdorff measure of sets that separate points in doubling and linearly locally contractible metric manifolds. This gives a quantitative topological isoperimetric inequality in the setting of metric manifolds, in the sense that lower bounds for the codimension-1 measure of a set depend not on some notion of filling or volume but rather on in-radii of complementary components. As a consequence, we show that balls in a closed, connected, doubling, and linearly locally contractible metric $n$-manifold $(M,d)$ with radius $0 0$ depends only on $n$ and on the doubling and linear local contractibility constants.

Rigidity for convex-cocompact actions on rank-one symmetric spaces

When a discrete group admits a convex-cocompact action on a non-compact rank-one symmetric space, there is a natural lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set, given by the Ahlfors regular conformal dimension of the boundary of the group. We show that equality is achieved precisely when the group stabilizes an isometric copy of some non-compact rank-one symmetric space on which it acts with compact quotient. This generalizes a theorem of Bonk-Kleiner, who proved it in the case of real hyperbolic space. To prove our main theorem, we study tangents of Lipschitz differentiability spaces that are embedded in a Carnot group. We show that almost all tangents are isometric to Carnot subgroups, at least when they are rectifiably connected. This extends a theorem of Cheeger, who proved it for PI spaces that are embedded in Euclidean space.

Conformal dimension and boundaries of planar domains

Building off of techniques that were recently developed by M. Carrasco, S. Keith, and B. Kleiner to study the conformal dimension of boundaries of hyperbolic groups, we prove that uniformly perfect boundaries of John domains in the Riemann sphere have conformal dimension equal to 0 or 1. Our proof uses a discretized version of Carrasco's "uniformly well-spread cut point" condition, which we call the discrete UWS property, that is well-suited to deal with metric spaces that are not linearly connected. More specifically, we prove that boundaries of John domains have the discrete UWS property and that any compact, doubling, uniformly perfect metric space with the discrete UWS property has conformal dimension equal to 0 or 1. In addition, we establish other geometric properties of metric spaces with the discrete UWS property, including connectivity properties of their weak tangents.

Discrete length-volume inequalities and lower volume bounds in metric spaces

A theorem of W. Derrick ensures that the volume of any Riemannian cube $([0,1]^n,g)$ is bounded below by the product of the distances between opposite codimension-1 faces. In this paper, we establish a discrete analog of Derrick's inequality for weighted open covers of the cube $[0,1]^n$, which is motivated by a question about lower volume bounds in metric spaces. Our main theorem generalizes a previous result of the author, which gave a combinatorial version of Derrick's inequality and was used in the analysis of boundaries of hyperbolic groups. As an application, we answer a question of Y. Burago and V. Zalgaller about length-volume inequalities for pseudometrics on the unit cube.

Loewner chains and Hölder geometry

The Loewner equation provides a correspondence between continuous real-valued functions $λ_t$ and certain increasing families of half-plane hulls $K_t$. In this paper we study the deterministic relationship between specific analytic properties of $λ_t$ and geometric properties of $K_t$. Our motivation comes, however, from the stochastic Loewner equation (SLE$_κ$), where the associated function $λ_t$ is a scaled Brownian motion and the corresponding domains $\mathbb{H} \backslash K_t$ are Hölder domains. We prove that if the increasing family $K_t$ is generated by a simple curve and the final domain $\mathbb{H} \backslash K_T$ is a Hölder domain, then the corresponding driving function has a modulus of continuity similar to that of Brownian motion. Informally, this is a converse to the fact that SLE$_κ$ curves are simple and their complementary domains are Hölder, when $κ< 4$. We also study a similar question outside of the simple curve setting, which informally corresponds to the SLE regime $κ> 4$. In the process, we establish general geometric criteria that guarantee that $K_t$ has a Lip$(1/2)$ driving function.

Rigidity for Quasi-Möbius Actions on Fractal Metric Spaces

In \cite{BK02}, M. Bonk and B. Kleiner proved a rigidity theorem for expanding quasi-Möbius group actions on Ahlfors $n$-regular metric spaces with topological dimension $n$. This led naturally to a rigidity result for quasi-convex geometric actions on CAT$(-1)$-spaces that can be seen as a metric analog to the "entropy rigidity" theorems of U. Hamenstädt and M. Bourdon. Building on the ideas developed in \cite{BK02}, we establish a rigidity theorem for certain expanding quasi-Möbius group actions on spaces with different metric and topological dimensions. This is motivated by a corresponding entropy rigidity result in the coarse geometric setting.

A metric characterization of snowflakes of Euclidean spaces

We give a metric characterization of snowflakes of Euclidean spaces. Namely, a metric space is isometric to $\mathbb R^n$ equipped with a distance $(d_{\rm E})^ε$, for some $n\in \mathbb N_0$ and $ε\in (0,1]$, where $d_{\rm E}$ is the Euclidean distance, if and only if it is locally compact, $2$-point isometrically homogeneous, and admits dilations of any factor.
