Brownian dynamics: from glassy to trivial

We endow a system of interacting particles with two distinct, local, Markovian and reversible microscopic dynamics. Using common field-theoretic techniques used to investigate the presence of a glass transition, we find that while the first, standard, dynamical rules lead to glassy behavior, the other one leads to a simple exponential relaxation towards equilibrium. This finding questions the intrinsic link that exists between the underlying, thermodynamical, energy landscape, and the dynamical rules with which this landscape is explored by the system. Our peculiar choice of dynam- ical rules offers the possibility of a direct connection with replica theory, and our findings therefore call for a clarification of the interplay between replica theory and the underlying dynamics of the system.

Equilibrium dynamics of the Dean-Kawasaki model: MCT and beyond

We extend a previously proposed field-theoretic self-consistent perturbation approach for the equilibrium dynamics of the Dean-Kawasaki equation presented in [J. Stat. Mech. 2008 P02004]. By taking terms missing in the latter analysis into account we arrive at a set of three new equations for correlation functions of the system. These correlations involve the density and its logarithm as local observables. Our new one-loop equations, which must carefully deal with the noninteracting Brownian gas theory, are more general than the historic Mode-Coupling one in that a further and well-defined approximation leads back to the original mode-coupling equation for the density correlations alone. However, without performing any further approximation step, our set of three equations does not feature any ergodic-non ergodic transition, as opposed to the historical mode- coupling approach.

A FDR-preserving field theory for interacting Brownian particles: one-loop theory and MCT

We develop a field theoretical treatment of a model of interacting Brownian particles. We pay particular attention to the requirement of the time reversal invariance and the fluctuation-dissipation relationship (FDR). The method used is a modified version of the auxiliary field method due originally to Andreanov, Biroli and Lefevre [J. Stat. Mech. P07008 (2006)]. We recover the correct diffusion law when the interaction is dropped as well as the standard mode coupling equation in the one-loop order calculation for interacting Brownian particle systems.

Glassy behavior in systems with Kac-type step-function interaction

We study a system with a weak, long-range repulsive Kac-type step-function interaction within the framework of a replicated effective $ϕ^4$-theory. The occurrence of extensive configurational entropy, or an exponentially large number of metastable minima in the free energy (characteristic of a glassy state), is demonstrated. The underlying mechanism of mesoscopic patterning and defect organizations is discussed.

Dynamic Mean-Field Glass Model with Reversible Mode Coupling and Trivial Hamiltonian

Often the current mode coupling theory (MCT) of glass transitions is compared with mean field theories. We explore this possible correspondence. After showing a simple-minded derivation of MCT with some difficulties we give a concise account of our toy model developed to gain more insight into MCT. We then reduce this toy model by adiabatically eliminating rapidly varying velocity-like variables to obtain a Fokker-Planck equation for the slowly varying density-like variables where diffusion matrix can be singular. This gives a room for nonergodic stationary solutions of the above equation.

Kinetically driven glassy transition in an exactly solvable toy model with reversible mode coupling mechanism and trivial statics

We propose a toy model with reversible mode coupling mechanism and with trivial Hamiltonian (and hence trivial statics). The model can be analyzed exactly without relying upon uncontrolled approximation such as the factorization approximation employed in the current MCT. We show that the model exhibits a kinetically driven transition from an ergodic phase to nonergodic phase. The nonergodic state is the nonequilibrium stationary solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution function of the model

An exactly solvable toy model that mimics the mode coupling theory of supercooled liquid and glass transition

A toy model is proposed which incorporates the reversible mode coupling mechanism responsible for ergodic-nonergodic transition with trivial Hamiltonian in the mode coupling theory (MCT) of structural glass transition. The model can be analyzed without relying on uncontrolled approximations inevitable in the current MCT. The strength of hopping processes can be easily tuned and the ideal glass transition is reproduced only in a certain range of the strength. On the basis of the analyses of our model we discuss about a sharp ergodic-nonergodic transition and its smearing out by "hopping".
