Inflationary assessment of $F(\mathcal{R},\tilde{\mathcal{R}})$ Einstein-Cartan models

In the framework of $F(\mathcal{R},\tilde{\mathcal{R}})$ Einstein-Cartan gravity with an action depending both of the Ricci scalar and the so-called Holst-invariant curvature we consider models that include cubic terms of the latter in the action and study their inflationary behavior. These terms can have a considerable effect either positive or negative in relation to the agreement with present observational data, depending on parameters. In parameter regions where the quadratic models fail to produce results consistent with observational data, the presence of these additional cubic terms can lead to compatible predictions.

Toward a gravitational network: Bridging metric-affine gravity and no-scale supergravity

We consider a class of models in the framework of metric-affine gravity and establish their correspondence to the bosonic sector of a class of no-scale supergravity models. The excellent inflationary behavior of the gravitational models considered is carried over to the corresponding supergravity ones, thus, enriching the landscape of inflation-compatible models.

Dynamically induced spin-2 mass in a Weyl-invariant framework

We combine the ghost-free bimetric theory of gravity with the concept of local Weyl invariance, realized in the framework of Einstein-Cartan gravity. The gravitational sector, characterized by two independent metrics and two independent connections, is coupled to a scalar field that can in principle develop a non-vanishing expectation value through radiative corrections. The spectrum of the model, apart from the massless standard graviton and a pair of axion-like pseudoscalars, associated with the presence of the Holst invariants in the action, includes an additional spin-$2$ state of a non-vanishing Fierz-Pauli mass proportional to the scalar field vacuum expectation value. We analyze the phenomenology of the model and specify the conditions under which the massive spin-$2$ state could be a primary dark matter candidate.

Keeping the relation between the Starobinsky model and no-scale supergravity ACTive

We introduce a modification of the Starobinsky model in the form of an additional cubic Ricci scalar curvature term $\sim αR^3$, scaled by a dimensionless parameter $α$, with the resulting inflaton potential being the standard Starobinsky potential modified to first parametric order by an additive term. The resulting potential is identical to the potential obtained by a modification of the superpotential employed in the construction of the Starobinsky model in the framework of no-scale supergravity, thus, extending the correspondence between a class of no-scale supergravity models and modifications of the Starobinsky model. We analyze the inflationary predictions of the model and find that for $-4.2 \times 10^{-5} \lesssim α\lesssim -1.9 \times 10^{-5}$, the modified Starobinsky model is in full agreement with the recent observational data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, for a range of $e$-folds, $N_\star = 50-60$.

General Einstein-Cartan quadratic gravity with derivative couplings

Within the framework of Einstein-Cartan gravity we consider an action, containing up to quadratic terms of the Ricci scalar and the Holst invariant, coupled non-minimally to a scalar field, including couplings of its derivatives to curvature. We derive the equivalent metric theory, featuring an extra dynamical pseudoscalar degree of freedom associated with the presence of the Holst term in the action. We study the evolution of the resulting two-field system in a FRW background and show that it evolves rapidly into an effective single-field inflationary model. We find that the model is consistent with the latest observational data for a wide range of its parameters, determining the necessary upper limits on derivative coupling parameters.

Inflation in Weyl-invariant Einstein-Cartan gravity

We consider Weyl-invariant quadratic Einstein-Cartan gravity coupled to a scalar field and study the inflationary behaviour of the coupled system of the scalar field and the pseudoscalar associated with the Holst invariant. We find that the model is characterized by effective single-field inflation occurring at small field values and analyze its predictions which are in comfortable agreement with existing observations for a range of parameter values.

Cosmic inflation in metric-affine gravity

In the context of metric-affine gravity theories, where the metric and connection are independent, we examine actions involving quadratic terms in the Ricci scalar curvature and the Holst invariant. These actions are non-minimally coupled to a scalar field. We explore the behavior of the corresponding effective metric theory, which includes an extra dynamic pseudoscalar degree of freedom. Detailed analysis of inflationary predictions reveals compliance with recent observations across various parameters, potentially allowing a higher tensor-to-scalar ratio. The spectral index's direction of change varies based on parameter positioning.

Inflation and reheating in quadratic metric-affine gravity with derivative couplings

Within the framework of metric-affine theories of gravity, where both the metric and connection are treated as independent variables, we consider actions quadratic in the Ricci scalar curvature coupled non-minimally to a scalar field through derivative couplings. Our analysis delves into the inflationary predictions, revealing their consistency with the latest observational constraints across a wide range of parameters. This compatibility permits adjustments such as an increase in the spectral index and a reduction in the tensor-to-scalar ratio. While we do not propose a specific reheating mechanism, our analysis demonstrates that within the quadratic model of inflation, the maximum reheating temperature can reach $\sim 3\times10^{15}\, {\rm GeV}$.

On the absence of ghosts in quadratic bigravity

An extension of the bimetric theory of gravity is considered that includes quadratic Ricci curvature terms associated with each metric. The issue of the Boulware-Deser ghost is analyzed. The Hamiltonian constraint is derived and the existence of a secondary constraint is shown, proving that the theory is ghost-free.

Bimetric Starobinsky model

The bimetric theory of gravity is an extension of general relativity that describes a massive spin-$2$ particle in addition to the standard massless graviton. The theory is based on two dynamical metric tensors with their interactions constrained by requiring the absence of the so-called Boulware-Deser ghost. It has been realized that the quantum interactions of matter fields with gravity are bound to generate modifications to the standard Einstein-Hilbert action such as quadratic curvature terms. Such a quadratic Ricci scalar term is present in the so-called Starobinsky model which has been proven to be rather robust in its inflationary predictions. In the present article we study a generalization of the Starobinsky model within the bimetric theory and find that its inflationary behavior stays intact while keeping all consistency requirements of the bimetric framework. The interpretation of the massive spin-2 particle as dark matter remains a viable scenario, as in standard bigravity.

Bimetric-Affine Quadratic Gravity

Bimetric gravity, is a theory of gravity that posits the existence of two interacting and dynamical metric tensors. The spectrum of bimetric gravity consists of a massless and a massive spin-2 particle. The form of the interactions between the two metrics $g_{μν}$ and $f_{μν}$ is constrained by requiring absence of the so called Boulware-Deser ghost. In this work we extend the original bimetric theory to its bimetric-affine counterpart, in which the two connections, associated with the Ricci scalars, are treated as independent variables. We examine in detail the case of an additional quadratic in the Ricci scalar curvature term $\mathcal{R}^2(g,Γ)$ and we find that this theory is free of ghosts for a wide range of the interaction parameters, not excluding the possibility of a Dark Matter interpretation of the massive spin-2 particle.

Inflation in Metric-Affine Quadratic Gravity

In the general framework of Metric-Affine theories of gravity, where the metric and the connection are independent variables, we consider actions quadratic in the Ricci scalar curvature and the Holst invariant (the contraction of the Riemann curvature with the Levi-Civita antisymmetric tensor) coupled non-minimally to a scalar field. We study the profile of the equivalent effective metric theory, featuring an extra dynamical pseudoscalar degree of freedom, and show that it reduces to an effective single-field inflationary model. We analyze in detail the inflationary predictions and find that they fall within the latest observational bounds for a wide range of parameters, allowing for an increase in the tensor-to-scalar ratio. The spectral index can either decrease or increase depending on the position in parameter space.

Late time acceleration in Palatini gravity

We investigate the effect of the quadratic correction $αR^2$ and non-minimal coupling $ξϕ^2 R$ on a quintessence model with an exponential potential $V(ϕ) = M^4\exp(-λϕ)$ in the Palatini formulation of gravity. We use dynamical system techniques to analyze the attractor structure of the model and uncover the possible trajectories of the system. We find that the quadratic correction cannot play a role in the late time dynamics, except for unacceptably large values of the parameter $α$; although it can play a role at early times. We find viable evolutions, from a matter-dominated phase to an accelerated expansion phase, with the dynamics driven by the non-minimal coupling. These evolutions correspond to trajectories where the field ends up frozen, thus acting as a cosmological constant.

Addendum to "Ultraviolet behaviour of Higgs inflation models"

This article is an addendum to [1]. We extend our computation of the on-shell scattering amplitudes in an arbitrary inflaton background $\barϕ_1$. Although the effective Einstein frame cutoff for $\barϕ_1>>M_P/\sqrtξ$ turns out to be $\barϕ_1$ or $ξ\barϕ_1$ for the $U(1)$ model, this is not the case for the realistic doublet Higgs model where the effective Einstein frame cutoff turns out to be the standard $M_P/\sqrtξ$ for both the Palatini and metric formulations. Then, as it has been pointed out in [1] the background $\barϕ_1$ is the effective Jordan frame cutoff for both the Palatini and metric formulations.

Extended interactions in the Palatini-$R^2$ inflation

The Palatini formulation of the Starobinsky model does not yield a propagating scalaron that can assume the role of the inflaton field as in the conventional metric formulation. In the so-called Palatini-${R}^2$ models this role is assumed by a fundamental scalar field nonminimally coupled to gravity. In this article we consider an extension of the interactions of this field by introducing a field dependence to the $R^2$ coefficient in the form of logarithmic corrections. We examine the resulting predictions of the inflationary observables in the framework of slow-roll approximation and investigate the possible implications of the reheating process on these predictions. We find that the model predictions lie in the favoured region of the observations and that the assumed scalar field dependence of the $R^2$ coupling tends to decrease the value of the spectral index $n_s$ and potentially enhance the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$, circumventing the highly suppressed values commonly cited for models considered in the same framework.

Ultraviolet behaviour of Higgs inflation models

We study the ultraviolet behaviour of Higgs inflation models above the apparent unitarity violation scale arising from the large non minimal coupling to gravity, by computing on-shell 4-point scattering amplitudes in the presence of a large inflaton background, away from the electroweak vacuum. We find that all tree-level amplitudes are well behaved at high energies below the inflaton background that can thus take values up to the Planck scale. This result holds in both the metric and Palatini formulation, and is independent of the frame (Jordan or Einstein) as expected. The same result also holds if an $R^2$ term is added to the action.

Constant-roll in the Palatini-$R^2$ models

We consider models of a scalar field coupled to quadratic $R\!+\!R^2$ gravity in the framework of the Palatini formulation. The resulting Einstein-frame generalized $k$-inflation effective theory is analyzed assuming that the constant-roll condition holds. We focus on a quartic self-interaction potential, a case of particular appeal modelling Higgs inflation, considering the cases of minimal and non-minimal coupling of the inflaton to gravity. For an appropriate range of the model parameters in the large field domain the obtained values for the inflationary observables are found in agreement with current observations.

Single-field inflation in models with an $R^2$ term

We present two cases where the addition of the $R^2$ term to an inflationary model leads to single-field inflation instead of two-field inflation as is usually the case. In both cases we find that the effect of the $R^2$ term is to reduce the value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$.
