Existence of regular solutions for a certain type of non-Newtonian Navier-Stokes equations

We are concerned with existence of regular solutions for non-Newtonian fluids in dimension three. For a certain type of non-Newtonian fluids we prove local existence of unique regular solutions, provided that the initial data are sufficiently smooth. Moreover, if the $H^3$-norm of initial data is sufficiently small, then the regular solution exists globally in time.

Global phase diagrams of run-and-tumble dynamics: equidistribution, waves, and blowup

For spatially one-dimensional run-and-tumble dynamics with mass conservation we develop a coarse phase diagram, that discriminates between global decay to equidistributed constant states, existence of spatially non-trivial waves, and finite time blowup of solutions. Motivated by counter-migrating ripples of high and low population density and fruiting body formation in myxobacteria, we identify phase boundaries as particular critical tumbling dynamics that allow for switching between these spatio-temporal phases upon slight changes in mass densities or parameter values.

Uniqueness of solutions for Keller-Segel system of porous medium type coupled to fluid equations

We prove the uniqueness of Hölder continuous weak solutions via duality argument and vanishing viscosity method for the Keller-Segel system of porous medium type equations coupled to the Stokes system in dimensions three. An important step is the estimate of the Green function of parabolic equations with lower order terms of variable coefficients, which seems to be of independent interest.

Holder continuity of Keller-Segel equations of porous medium type coupled to fluid equations

We consider a coupled system consisting of a degenerate porous medium type of Keller-Segel system and Stokes system modeling the motion of swimming bacteria living in fluid and consuming oxygen. We establish the global existence of weak solutions and Hölder continuous solutions in dimension three, under the assumption that the power of degeneracy is above a certain number depending on given parameter values. To show Hölder continuity of weak solutions, we consider a single degenerate porous medium equation with lower order terms, and via a unified method of proof, we obtain Hölder regularity, which is of independent interest.

Stability of planar traveling waves in a Keller-Segel equation on an infinite strip domain

A simplified model of the tumor angiogenesis can be described by a Keller-Segel equation \cite{FrTe,Le,Pe}. The stability of traveling waves for the one dimensional system has recently been known by \cite{JinLiWa,LiWa}. In this paper we consider the equation on the two dimensional domain $ (x, y) \in \mathbf R \times {\mathbf S^λ}$ for a small parameter $λ>0$ where $ \mathbf S^λ$ is the circle of perimeter $λ$. Then the equation allows a planar traveling wave solution of invading types. We establish the nonlinear stability of the traveling wave solution if the initial perturbation is sufficiently small in a weighted Sobolev space without a chemical diffusion. When the diffusion is present, we show a linear stability. Lastly, we prove that any solution with our front conditions eventually becomes planar under certain regularity conditions. The key ideas are to use the Cole-Hopf transformation and to apply the Poincaré inequality to handle with the two dimensional structure.

Green tensor of the Stokes system and asymptotics of stationary Navier-Stokes flows in the half space

We derive refined estimates of the Green tensor of the stationary Stokes system in the half space. We then investigate the spatial asymptotics of stationary solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the half space. We also discuss the asymptotics of fast decaying flows in the whole space and exterior domains. In the Appendix we consider axisymmetric self-similar solutions.

Solvability for Stokes system in Hölder spaces in bounded domains and its applications

We consider Stokes system in bounded domains and we present conditions of given data, in particular, boundary data, which ensure Hölder continuity of solutions. For Hölder continuous solutions for the Stokes system the normal component of boundary data requires a bit more regular than boundary data of Hölder continuous solutions for the heat equation. We also construct an example, which shows that Hölder continuity is no longer valid, unless the proposed condition of boundary data is fulfilled. As an application, we consider a certain general types of nonlinear systems coupled to fluid equations and local well-posedness is established in Hölder spaces.

Global Well-posedness of the Chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes Equations in two dimensions

We consider two dimensional Keller-Segel equations coupled with the Navier-Stokes equations modelled by Tuval et al.[32]. Assuming that the chemotactic sensitivity and oxygen consumption rate are nondecreasing and differentiable, we prove that there is no blow-up in a finite time for solutions with large initial data to chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes equations in two dimensions. In addition, temporal decays of solutions are shown, as time tends to infinity.

Existence of global solutions for a Keller-Segel-fluid equations with nonlinear diffusion

We consider a coupled system consisting of the Navier-Stokes equations and a porous medium type of Keller-Segel system that model the motion of swimming bacteria living in fluid and consuming oxygen. We establish the global-in-time existence of weak solutions for the Cauchy problem of the system in dimension three. In addition, if the Stokes system, instead Navier-Stokes system, is considered for the fluid equation, we prove that bounded weak solutions exist globally in time.

Magnetic resonance-based reconstruction method of conductivity and permittivity distributions at the Larmor frequency

Magnetic resonance electrical property tomography is a recent medical imaging modality for visualizing the electrical tissue properties of the human body using radio-frequency magnetic fields. It uses the fact that in magnetic resonance imaging systems the eddy currents induced by the radio-frequency magnetic fields reflect the conductivity ($σ$) and permittivity ($ε$) distributions inside the tissues through Maxwell's equations. The corresponding inverse problem consists of reconstructing the admittivity distribution ($γ=σ+iωε$) at the Larmor frequency ($ω/2π=$128 MHz for a 3 tesla MRI machine) from the positive circularly polarized component of the magnetic field ${\bf H}=(H_x,H_y,H_z)$. Previous methods are usually based on an assumption of local homogeneity ($\nablaγ\approx 0$) which simplifies the governing equation. However, previous methods that include the assumption of homogeneity are prone to artifacts in the region where $γ$ varies. Hence, recent work has sought a reconstruction method that does not assume local-homogeneity. This paper presents a new magnetic resonance electrical property tomography reconstruction method which does not require any local homogeneity assumption on $γ$. We find that $γ$ is a solution of a semi-elliptic partial differential equation with its coefficients depending only on the measured data $H^+$, which enable us to compute a blurred version of $γ$. To improve the resolution of the reconstructed image, we developed a new optimization algorithm that minimizes the mismatch between the data and the model data as a highly nonlinear function of $γ$. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the potential of the proposed reconstruction method.

Electrical impedance tomography-based pressure-sensing using conductive membrane

This paper presents a mathematical framework for a flexible pressure-sensor model using electrical impedance tomography (EIT). When pressure is applied to a conductive membrane patch with clamped boundary, the pressure-induced surface deformation results in a change in the conductivity distribution. This change can be detected in the current-voltage data ({\it i.e.,} EIT data) measured on the boundary of the membrane patch. Hence, the corresponding inverse problem is to reconstruct the pressure distribution from the data. The 2D apparent conductivity (in terms of EIT data) corresponding to the surface deformation is anisotropic. Thus, we consider a constrained inverse problem by restricting the coefficient tensor to the range of the map from pressure to 2D-apparent conductivity. This paper provides theoretical grounds for the mathematical model of the inverse problem. We develop a reconstruction algorithm based on a careful sensitivity analysis. We demonstrate the performance of the reconstruction algorithm through numerical simulations to validate its feasibility for future experimental studies.

Elliptic systems with measurable coefficients of the type of Lamé system in three dimensions

We study the $3 \times 3$ elliptic systems $\nabla \times (a(x) \nabla\times u)-\nabla (b(x) \nabla \cdot u)=f$, where the coefficients $a(x)$ and $b(x)$ are positive scalar functions that are measurable and bounded away from zero and infinity. We prove that weak solutions of the above system are Hölder continuous under some minimal conditions on the inhomogeneous term $f$. We also present some applications and discuss several related topics including estimates of the Green's functions and the heat kernels of the above systems.

Estimates of anisotropic Sobolev spaces with mixed norms for the Stokes system in a half-space

We are concerned with the non-stationary Stokes system with non-homogeneous external force and non-zero initial data in ${\mathbb R}^n_+ \times (0,T)$. We obtain new estimates of solutions including pressure in terms of mixed anisotropic Sobolev spaces. As an application, some anisotropic Sobolev estimates are presented for weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in a half-space in dimension three.

Global existence and temporal decay in Keller-Segel models coupled to fluid equations

We consider a Keller-Segel model coupled to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in spatial dimensions two and three. We establish the local existence of regular solutions and present some blow-up criteria for both cases that equations of oxygen concentration is of parabolic or hyperbolic type. We also prove global existence and decay estimate in time under the some smallness conditions of initial data.

Boundary regularity criteria for suitable weak solutions of the magnetohydrodynamic equations

We present some new regularity criteria for suitable weak solutions of magnetohydrodynamic equations near boundary in dimension three. We prove that suitable weak solutions are Hölder continuous near boundary provided that either the scaled $L^{p,q}_{x,t}$-norm of the velocity with $3/p+2/q\le 2$, $2<q<\infty$, or the scaled $L^{p,q}_{x,t}$-norm of the vorticity with $3/p+2/q\le 3$, $2<q<\infty$ are sufficiently small near the boundary.
