Optimization of BLE Broadcast Mode in Offline Finding Network

In the Offline Finding Network(OFN), offline Bluetooth tags broadcast to the surrounding area, the finder devices receiving the broadcast signal and upload location information to the IoT(Internet of Things) cloud servers, thereby achieving offline finding of lost items. This process is essentially a Bluetooth low energy (BLE) neighbor discovery process(NDP). In the process, the variety of Bluetooth scan modes caused by the scan interval and scan window settings affects the discovery latency of finder devices finding the tag broadcast packets. To optimize the experience of searching for lost devices, we propose the CPBIS-mechanism, a certain proportion broadcast-intervals screening mechanism that calculates the most suitable two broadcast intervals and their proportion for offline tags. This reduces discovery latency in the BLE NDP, improves the discovery success rate, further enhances the user experience. To our knowledge, we are the first to propose a comprehensive solution for configuring the broadcast interval parameters of advertisers in BLE NDP, particularly for configurations involving two or more broadcast intervals. We evaluated the results obtained by CPBIS on the nRF52832 chip. The data shows that the CPBIS-mechanism achieves relatively low discovery latencies for multiple scan modes.

A Deep Learning based Wearable Healthcare IoT Device for AI-enabled Hearing Assistance Automation

With the recent booming of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly deep learning techniques, digital healthcare is one of the prevalent areas that could gain benefits from AI-enabled functionality. This research presents a novel AI-enabled Internet of Things (IoT) device operating from the ESP-8266 platform capable of assisting those who suffer from impairment of hearing or deafness to communicate with others in conversations. In the proposed solution, a server application is created that leverages Google's online speech recognition service to convert the received conversations into texts, then deployed to a micro-display attached to the glasses to display the conversation contents to deaf people, to enable and assist conversation as normal with the general population. Furthermore, in order to raise alert of traffic or dangerous scenarios, an 'urban-emergency' classifier is developed using a deep learning model, Inception-v4, with transfer learning to detect/recognize alerting/alarming sounds, such as a horn sound or a fire alarm, with texts generated to alert the prospective user. The training of Inception-v4 was carried out on a consumer desktop PC and then implemented into the AI based IoT application. The empirical results indicate that the developed prototype system achieves an accuracy rate of 92% for sound recognition and classification with real-time performance.

Degradation of superconducting properties in MgB2 films by exposure to water

The effect of water exposure on MgB2 is studied by submerging an 800 nm thick MgB2 film into deionized water at room temperature for 1 hour, 4 hours, 10 hours, and 15 hours, and by analyzing the resulting material using scanning electron microscopy and resistance vs. temperature measurements. It is clearly observed that Tconset of these films (obtained by an ex-situ reaction of a e-beam evaporated boron layer) remains unchanged throughout this process, indicating that at least a portion of the sample retains its original bulk-like properties. The data is consistent with an interpretation in which a portion of the exposed film - likely the region closest to the substrate - becomes superconducting only at about 25 K. It is possible that this low-Tc region already exists in the as-prepared film, and we observe that its Tc coincides with that of MgB2 films obtained by annealing precursor films prepared by pulsed laser deposition. Therefore the data presented here not only illustrate the degradation of MgB2 in water but also shed light onto the differences and similarities between films obtained via different routes.
