Friedmann branes with variable tension

We introduce brane-worlds with non-constant tension, strenghtening the analogy with fluid membranes, which exhibit a temperature-dependence according to the empirical law established by Eötvös. This new degree of freedom allows for evolving gravitational and cosmological constants, the latter being a natural candidate for dark energy. We establish the covariant dynamics on a brane with variable tension in full generality, by considering asymmetrically embedded branes and allowing for non-standard model fields in the 5-dimensional space-time. Then we apply the formalism for a perfect fluid on a Friedmann brane, which is embedded in a 5-dimensional charged Vaidya-Anti de Sitter space-time.

Generalized Friedmann branes

We prove that for a large class of generalized Randall-Sundrum II type models the characterization of brane-gravity sector by the effective Einstein equation, Codazzi equation and the twice-contracted Gauss equation is equivalent with the bulk Einstein equation. We give the complete set of equations in the generic case of non-$Z_{2}$-symmetric bulk and arbitrary energy-momentum tensors both on the brane and in the bulk. Among these, the effective Einstein equation contains a varying cosmological constant and two new source terms. The first of these represents the deviation from $Z_{2}$ symmetry, while the second arises from the bulk energy-momentum tensor. We apply the formalism for the case of perfect fluid on a Friedmann brane embedded in a generic bulk. The generalized Friedmann and Raychaudhuri equations are given in a form independent of both the embedding and the bulk matter. They contain two new functions obeying a first order differential system, both depending on the bulk matter and the embedding. Then we focus on Friedmann branes separating two non-identical (inner or outer) regions of Reissner-Nordström-Anti de Sitter bulk space-times, generalizing previous non-$Z_{2}$-symmetric treatments. Finally the analysis is repeated for the Vaidya-Anti de Sitter bulk space-time, allowing for both ingoing and outgoing radiation in each region.

On the validity of the 5-dimensional Birkhoff theorem: The tale of an exceptional case

The 5-dimensional (5d) Birkhoff theorem gives the class of 5d vacuum space-times containing spatial hypersurfaces with cosmological symmetries. This theorem is violated by the 5d vacuum Gergely-Maartens (GM) space-time, which is not a representant of the above class, but contains the static Einstein brane as embedded hypersurface. We prove that the 5d Birkhoff theorem is still satisfied in a weaker sense: the GM space-time is related to the degenerated horizon metric of certain black-hole space-times of the allowed class. This result resembles the connection between the Bertotti-Robinson space-time and the horizon region of the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom space-time in general relativity.

Supermassive binary black hole mergers

When galaxies collide, dynamical friction drives their central supermassive black holes close enought to each other such that gravitational radiation becomes the leading dissipative effect. Gravitational radiation takes away energy, momentum and angular momentum from the compact binary, such that the black holes finally merge. In the process, the spin of the dominant black hole is reoriented. On observational level, the spins are directly related to the jets, which can be seen at radio frequencies. Images of the X-shaped radio galaxies together with evidence on the age of the jets illustrate that the jets are reoriented, a phenomenon known as spin-flip. Based on the galaxy luminosity statistics we argue here that the typical galaxy encounters involve mass ratios between 1:3 to 1:30 for the central black holes. Based on the spin-orbit precession and gravitational radiation we also argue that for this typical mass ratio in the inspiral phase of the merger the initially dominant orbital angular momentum will become smaller than the spin, which will be reoriented. We prove here that the spin-flip phenomenon typically occurs already in the inspiral phase, and as such is describable by post-Newtonian techniques.

Comment on "The complete Schwarzschild interior and exterior solution in the harmonic coordinate system" [J. Math. Phys. 39, 6086 (1998)]

In a recent paper Liu considered the complete Schwarzschild interior and exterior solution in harmonic coordinates. There he argued about the necessity to keep an integration constant, in contrast with previous treatments. The purpose of this comment is to show that the above conclusion cannot be traced from the matching conditions between the vacuum exterior and the uniform density interior perfect fluid, as claimed.

The luminosity-redshift relation in brane-worlds: II. Confrontation with experimental data

The luminosity distance - redshift relation for a wide class of generalized Randall-Sundrum type II brane-world models with Weyl fluid is compared to the presently available supernova data. We find that there is a class of spacially flat models with different amounts of matter $Ω_ρ$ and Weyl fluid $Ω_{d}$, which have a very similar fitting quality. The best-fit models are equally likely and can be regarded as extensions of the $Λ$CDM model, which is also included. We examine three models with different evolutionary history of the Weyl fluid, characterized by a parameter $α=0,~2$ and$~3$. The first model describes a brane which had radiated energy into the bulk some time ago, but in recent times this energy exchange has ceased and only a dark radiation ($α=0$) is left. In the other two models the Weyl-fluid describes a radiating brane throughout the cosmological evolution, up to our days. We find that the trought of the fitting surface extends over a wider $Ω_{d}$-range with increasing $α$, but the linear correlation of $Ω_{d}$ and $Ω_ρ$ holds all over the examined $Ω_{d}$ range.

Gravitational dynamics in s+1+1 dimensions II. Hamiltonian theory

We develop a Hamiltonian formalism of brane-world gravity, which singles out two preferred, mutually orthogonal directions. One is a unit twist-free field of spatial vectors with integral lines intersecting perpendicularly the brane. The other is a temporal vector field with respect to which we perform the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner decomposition of the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian. The gravitational variables arise from the projections of the spatial metric and their canonically conjugated momenta as tensorial, vectorial and scalar quantities defined on the family of hypersurfaces containing the brane. They represent the gravitons, a gravi-photon and a gravi-scalar, respectively. From the action we derive the canonical evolution equations and the constraints for these gravitational degrees of freedom both on the brane and outside it. By integrating across the brane, the dynamics also generates the tensorial and scalar projection of the Lanczos equation. The vectorial projection of the Lanczos equation arises in a similar way from the diffeomorphism constraint. Both the graviton and the gravi-scalar are continuous across the brane, however the momentum of the gravi-vector has a jump, related to the energy transport (heat flow) on the brane.

The luminosity-redshift relation in brane-worlds: I. Analytical results

The luminosity distance - redshift relation is analytically given for generalized Randall-Sundrum type II brane-world models containing dark radiation. The derived expressions contain both elementary functions and elliptic integrals of the first and second kind. First we derive the relation for models with the Randall-Sundrum fine-tuning. Then we generalize the method for models with cosmological constant. The analytical results are suitable for testing brane-world models when future supernova data at higher redshifts will be available.

Cosmological tests of generalized RS brane-worlds with Weyl fluid

A class of generalized Randall-Sundrum type II (RS) brane-world models with Weyl fluid are confronted with the Gold supernovae data set and BBN constraints. We consider three models with different evolutionary history of the Weyl fluid, characterized by the parameter $α$. For $α=0$ the Weyl curvature of the bulk appears as dark radiation on the brane, while for $α=2$ and 3 the brane radiates, leaving a Weyl fluid on the brane with energy density decreasing slower than that of (dark) matter. In each case the contribution $Ω_d$ of the Weyl fluid represents but a few percent of the energy content of the Universe. All models fit reasonably well the Gold2006 data. The best fit model for $α=0$ is for $Ω_d=0.04$. In order to obey BBN constraints in this model however, the brane had to radiate at earlier times.

Asymmetric Swiss-cheese brane-worlds

We study a brane-world cosmological scenario with local inhomogeneities represented by black holes. The brane is asymmetrically embedded into the bulk. The black strings/cigars penetrating the Friedmann brane generate a Swiss-cheese type structure. This universe forever expands and decelerates, as its general relativistic analogue. The evolution of the cosmological fluid however can proceed along four branches, two allowed to have positive energy density, one of them having the symmetric embedding limit. On this branch a future pressure singularity can arise for either (a) a difference in the cosmological constants of the cosmological and black hole brane regions (b) a difference in the left and right bulk cosmological constants. While the behaviour (a) can be avoided by a redefinition of the fluid variables, (b) establishes a critical value of the asymmetry over which the pressure singularity occurs. We introduce the pressure singularity censorship which bounds the degree of asymmetry in the bulk cosmological constant. We also show as a model independent generic feature that the asymmetry source term due to the bulk cosmological constant increases in the early universe. In order to obey the nucleosynthesis constraints, the brane tension should be constrained therefore both from below and from above. With the maximal degree of asymmetry obeying the pressure singularity censorship, the higher limit is 10 times the lower limit. The degree of asymmetry allowed by present cosmological observations is however much less, pushing the upper limit to infinity.

Orbital phase in inspiralling compact binaries

We derive the rate of change of the mean motion up to the second post-Newtonian order for inspiralling compact binaries with spin, mass quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments on eccentric orbits. We give this result in terms of orbital elements. We also present the related orbital phase for circular orbits.

Black holes on cosmological branes

While in general relativity black holes can be freely embedded into a cosmological background, the same problem in brane-worlds is much more cumbersome. We present here the results obtained so far in the explicit constructions of such space-times. We also discuss gravitational collapse in this context.

Black holes and dark energy from gravitational collapse on the brane

The gravitational collapse of a pressureless fluid in general relativity (Oppenheimer-Snyder collapse) results in a black hole. The study of the same phenomenon in the brane-world scenario has shown that the exterior of the collapsing dust sphere cannot be static. We show that by allowing for pressure, the exterior of a fluid sphere can be static. The gravitational collapse on the brane proceeds according to the modified gravitational dynamics, turning the initial nearly dust-like configuration into a fluid with tension. The tension arises from the non-linearity of the dynamical equations in the energy-momentum tensor, and it vanishes in the general relativistic limit. Below the horizon the tension turns the star into dark energy. This transition occurs right below the horizon for astrophysical black holes and far beyond the horizon for intermediate mass and galactic black holes. Further, both the energy density and the tension increase towards infinite values during the collapse. The infinite tension however could not stop the formation of the singularity.

No Swiss-cheese universe on the brane

We study the possibility of brane-world generalization of the Einstein-Straus Swiss-cheese cosmological model. We find the modifications induced by the brane-world scenario. At a first glance only the motion of the boundary is modified and the fluid in the exterior region is allowed to have pressure. The general relativistic Einstein-Straus model emerges in the low density limit. By imposing that the brane is static, a combination of the junction conditions and modified cosmological evolution leads to the conclusion that the brane is flat. Thus no static Swiss-cheese universe can exist on the brane. The conclusion is not altered by the introduction of a cosmological constant in the FLRW regions. This result mimics a similar general relativistic result: static Einstein-Straus universes do not exist.

Generalized true- and eccentric-anomaly parametrizations for the perturbed Kepler motion

The true- and eccentric-anomaly parametrizations of the Kepler motion are generalized to quasiperiodic orbits by considering perturbations of the radial part of kinetic energy as a series in the negative powers of the orbital radius. A toolbox of methods for averaging observables in terms of the energy $E$ and angular momentum $L$ is developed. A broad range of systems governed by the generic Brumberg force, as well as recent applications of the theory of gravitational radiation involve integrals over a period of motion. These integrals are evaluated by using the residue theorem. It is shown that the pole of the integrand is located in the origin and that under certain circumstances an additional pole emerges.

Is dark matter futile on the brane?

We investigate whether dark matter can be replaced by various source terms appearing in the effective Einstein equation, valid on a brane embedded into a higher dimensional space-time (the bulk). Such non-conventional source terms include a quadratic (ordinary) matter source term, a geometric source term originating in the Weyl curvature of the bulk, a source term arising from the possible asymmetric embedding, and finally the pull-back to the brane of possible non-standard model bulk fields.

The second post-Newtonian order generalized Kepler equation

The radial component of the motion of compact binary systems composed of neutron stars and/or black holes on eccentric orbit is integrated. We consider all type of perturbations that emerge up to second post-Newtonian order. These perturbations are either of relativistic origin or are related to the spin, mass quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments of the binary components. We derive a generalized Kepler equation and investigate its domain of validity, in which it properly describes the radial motion.

Hamiltonian theory of brane-world gravity

A brane-world universe consists of a 4-dimensional brane embedded into a 5-dimensional space-time (bulk). We apply the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner decomposition to the brane-world, which results in a 3+1+1 break-up of the bulk. We present the canonical theory of brane cosmology based on this decomposition. The Hamiltonian equations allow for the study of any physical phenomena in brane gravity. This method gives new prospects for studying the initial value problem, stability analysis, brane black holes, cosmological perturbation theory and canonical quantization in brane-worlds.
