Evolution of the hot dense matter at LHC energies through light and heavy-flavor hadrons using non-extensive thermodynamics

We investigate the formation and evolution of hot systems comprising charmed and light hadrons using non-extensive thermodynamics. We analyze data from pp, p--Pb, and Pb--Pb collisions at center-of-mass energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76$~TeV to 13~TeV, measured by the CERN LHC ALICE experiment. The hadron species examined include charged pions and kaons, ${\rm K}^0_{\rm s}$, (anti)protons, $ϕ$ mesons, $Λ^0$ hyperons, and D mesons. Employing our previously established methods, we determine the common Tsallis parameters $T_{\rm eq}$ and $q_{\rm eq}$ for each hadron type. While charm comes from earlier than light hadrons, we see that $T_{\rm eq}$ is ordered by mass, reflecting a similar ordering in the time-scale relevant for the spectrum. Our results also allow for constraining the heat capacity of the system. The current analysis thus enhances our understanding of hadron production dynamics and thermal properties in high-energy collisions.

Defining the Underlying-Event Activity in the Presence of Heavy-Flavour Processes in Proton-Proton Collisions at LHC Energies

We present a systematic analysis of heavy-flavour production in the underlying event in connection to a leading hard process in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, using the PYTHIA 8 Monte Carlo event generator. We compare results from events selected by triggering on the leading hadron, as well as those triggered with reconstructed jets. We show that the kinematics of heavy-flavour fragmentation complicates the characterisation of the underlying event, and the usual method which uses the leading charged final-state hadron as a trigger may wash away the connection between the leading process and the heavy-flavour particle created in association with that. Events triggered with light or heavy-flavour jets, however, retain this connection and bring more direct information on the underlying heavy-flavour production process, but may also import unwanted sensitivity to gluon radiation. The methods outlined in the current work provide means to verify model calculations for light and heavy-flavour production in the jet and the underlying event in great details.

Heavy-flavour production in proton--proton collisions with the ALICE experiment

The production of heavy-flavour hadrons in high-energy hadronic collisions is a unique source of information on various aspects of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Production of heavy-flavour hadrons in proton--proton collisions allows the test of perturbative QCD models, while the comparison of mesons and baryons with heavy-flavour quarks can differentiate between fragmentation scenarios. Multiplicity-dependent measurements allow for the understanding of semi-hard vacuum QCD effects, as well as to study the coalescence mechanisms of heavy-flavour quarks with light and strange quarks. Recent results from the ALICE experiment in proton--proton collisions on the production of D mesons and leptons from the decay of heavy-flavour hadrons, as well as charmed baryons, are presented in this contribution. Furthermore, the multiplicity dependence of self-normalised heavy-flavour electron yields, as well as that of strange to non-strange D-meson and charmed baryon-to-meson ratios are also shown.
