On hyperinvariant subspaces of operators containing unilateral shifts

The hyperinvariant subspace problem for Hilbert space operators $T$ containing a unilateral shift is addressed. The discussion is based on a similarity model of $T$, which is an operator-matrix $\widehat T= [T_{i,j}]_3$ where $T_{1,1}$ is the simple unilateral shift $S$ and $T_{3,3}$ is a cyclic diagonal operator $D$. The existence of $D$ is established by the technique resulting almost invariant half-spaces in \cite{APTT}; see also \cite{Tc} and \cite{HP}. For any operator $Q=[Q_{i,j}]_3$ in the commutant of $\widehat T$, the entry $Q_{3,1}$ intertwines $S$ with $D$ up to a transformation of rank at most 1. These entries form a linear manifold ${\cal L}_{3,1}$. We focus on 3-dimensional cross-sections of ${\cal L}_{3,1}$. These are subspaces of $3\times 3$ complex matrices, transformed into singular matrices by a canonical mapping. If such a subspace ${\cal L}$ is not transitive, then $T$ has a nontrivial hyperinvariant subspace. A throrough study reveals that ${\cal L}$ can be transitive only if it has a very specific basis. Consequences of the existence of nontrivial hyperinvariant subspaces in the presence of shift-type invariant subspaces are also discussed.

Adjacent cross-sections of the commutant of Hilbert space operators

Applying the techniques resulting the existence of almost invariant half-spaces, similarity models $\wh T$ can be given for upper triangular operator-matrices $T= \left[\begin{matrix}A&C\\ 0&B\end{matrix}\right]$. The model $\wh T$ is also an operator-matrix, containing two diagonal operators in the general case \cite{ker25}, and the unilateral shift $S$ together with a diagonal operator in the particular case when $A$ is similar to $S$ \cite{ker26}. Well-chosen compressions of operators in the commutant $\{\wh T\}'$ form a linear manifold $\whŁ$ satisfying the condition that every $\wh X\in\wh Ł$ is transformed into $\wh Y$ with $\rank\wh Y\le 2$ by a canonical mapping. Furthermore, a cyclcity property of $\{T\}'$ yields transitivity of $\whŁ$. In \cite{ker25} and \cite{ker26} the 3-dimensional cross-sections of $\whŁ$ have been investigated characterizing the canonical bases occurring in the corresponding subspaces of the matrix-algebra $M_3[\C]$. In this paper new conditions are provided by studying matching of adjacent cross-sections.

Hyperinvariant subspaces of block-triangular operators on Hilbert space

We show that if a nonscalar operator on a separable Hilbert space has a nontrivial invariant subspace, then it has also a nontrivial hyperinvariant subspace. Thus the hyperinvariant subspace problem is equivalent to the invariant subspace problem. As a consequence we obtain that every bilateral weighted shift has a proper hyprinvariant subspace. Our proof is based on a recent structure theorem in \cite{HP}, originated in the approach to almost invariant half-spaces in \cite{APTT} (see also \cite{Tc}). The idea that such a result would be possible came from the paper \cite{Pearcy} by the second author which was submitted to Acta Szeged for publication. The manuscript contained the construction we use herein and also set forth the rank inequality that we use to obtain the contradiction that yields the desired theorem. The proof given in \cite{Pearcy} of that theorem was incorrect, however, and it's proof turned out to be rather difficult, and was eventually found by the first author of this paper.

Quasianalytic n-tuples of Hilbert space operators

In this paper a systematic study of unitary asymptotes of commuting $n$-tuples of general Hilbert space operators is initiated. Special emphasis is put on the study of the quasianalicity property.

Quasianalytic polynomially bounded operators

Quasianalytic contractions form the crucial class in the quest for proper invariant and hyperinvariant subspaces for asymptotically non-vanishing Hilbert space contractions. The property of quasianalycity relies on the concepts of unitary asymptote and $H^ı$-functional calculus. These objects can be naturally defined in the setting of polynomially bounded operators too, which makes possible to extend the study of quasianalycity from contractions to this larger class. Carrying out this program we pose also several interesting questions.
