Quantum unique ergodicity for magnetic Laplacians on T^2

Given a smooth integral two-form and a smooth potential on the flat torus of dimension 2, we study the high energy properties of the corresponding magnetic Schrödinger operator. Under a geometric condition on the magnetic field, we show that every sequence of high energy eigenfunctions satisfies the quantum unique ergodicity property even if the Liouville measure is not ergodic for the underlying classical flow (the Euclidean geodesic flow on the 2-torus).

On shape optimization with large magnetic fields in two dimensions

This paper aims to show that, in the limit of strong magnetic fields, the optimal domains for eigenvalues of magnetic Laplacians tend to exhibit symmetry. We establish several asymptotic bounds on magnetic eigenvalues to support this conclusion. Our main result implies that if, for a bounded simply-connected planar domain, the n-th eigenvalue of the magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian with uniform magnetic field is smaller than the corresponding eigenvalue for a disk of the same area, then the Fraenkel asymmetry of that domain tends to zero in the strong magnetic field limit. Comparable results are also derived for the magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian on rectangles, as well as the magnetic Dirac operator with infinite mass boundary conditions on smooth domains. As part of our analysis, we additionally provide a new estimate for the torsion function on rectangles.

The Flea on the Magnetic Elephant

We investigate a two-dimensional magnetic Laplacian with two radially symmetric magnetic wells. Its spectral properties are determined by the tunneling between them. If the tunneling is weak and the wells are mirror symmetric, the two lowest eigenfunctions are localized in both wells being distributed roughly equally. In this note we show that an exponentially small symmetry violation can in this situation have a dramatic effect, making each of the eigenfunctions localized dominantly in one well only. This is reminiscent of the `flea on the elephant' effect for Schrödinger operators; our result shows that it has a purely magnetic counterpart.

Tunneling between magnetic wells in two dimensions

The two-dimensional magnetic Laplacian is considered. We calculate the leading term of the splitting between the first two eigenvalues of the operator in the semiclassical limit under the assumption that the magnetic field does not vanish and has two symmetric magnetic wells with respect to the coordinate axes. This is the first result of quantum tunneling between purely magnetic wells under generic assumptions. The proof, which strongly relies on microlocal analysis, reveals a purely magnetic Agmon distance between the wells. Surprisingly, it is discovered that the exponential decay of the eigenfunctions away from the magnetic wells is not crucial to derive the tunneling formula. The key is a microlocal exponential decay inside the characteristic manifold, with respect to the variable quantizing the classical center guide motion.

Magnetic tunneling between disc-shaped obstacles

In this paper we derive formulae for the semiclassical tunneling in the presence of a constant magnetic field in 2 dimensions. The `wells' in the problem are identical discs with Neumann boundary conditions, so we study the magnetic Neumann Laplacian in the complement of a set of discs. We provide a reduction method to an interaction matrix, which works for a general configuration of obstacles. When there are two discs, we deduce an asymptotic formula for the spectral gap. When the discs are placed along a regular lattice, we derive an effective operator which gives rise to the famous Harper's equation. Main challenges in this problem compared to recent results on magnetic tunneling are the fact that one-well ground states have non-trivial angular momentum which depends on the semiclassical parameter, and the existence of eigenvalue crossings.

Tunneling effect between radial electric wells in a homogeneous magnetic field

We establish a tunneling formula for a Schrödinger operator with symmetric double-well potential and homogeneous magnetic field, in dimension two. Each well is assumed to be radially symmetric and compactly supported. We obtain an asymptotic formula for the difference between the two first eigenvalues of this operator, that is exponentially small in the semiclassical limit.

Purely magnetic tunnelling between radial magnetic wells

This article is devoted to the semiclassical spectral analysis of the magnetic Laplacian in two dimensions. Assuming that the magnetic field is positive and has two symmetric radial wells, we establish an accurate tunnelling formula, that is a one-term estimate of the spectral gap between the lowest two eigenvalues. This gap is exponentially small when the semiclassical parameter goes to zero, but positive.

Eigenvalue asymptotics for confining magnetic Schrödinger operators with complex potentials

This article is devoted to the spectral analysis of the electro-magnetic Schrödinger operator on the Euclidean plane. In the semiclassical limit, we derive a pseudo-differential effective operator that allows us to describe the spectrum in various situations and appropriate regions of the complex plane. Not only results of the selfadjoint case are proved (or recovered) in the proposed unifying framework, but new results are established when the electric potential is complex-valued. In such situations, when the non-selfadjointness comes with its specific issues (lack of a "spectral theorem", resolvent estimates), the analogue of the "low-lying eigenvalues" of the selfadjoint case are still accurately described and the spectral gaps estimated.

2D random magnetic Laplacian with white noise magnetic field

We define the random magnetic Laplacien with spatial white noise as magnetic field on the two-dimensional torus using paracontrolled calculus. It yields a random self-adjoint operator with pure point spectrum and domain a random subspace of nonsmooth functions in L 2. We give sharp bounds on the eigenvalues which imply an almost sure Weyl-type law.

A semiclassical Birkhoff normal form for constant-rank magnetic fields

We consider the semiclassical magnetic Laplacian $\mathcal{L}_h$ on a Riemannian manifold, with a constant-rank and non-vanishing magnetic field $B$. Under the localization assumption that $B$ admits a unique and non-degenerate well, we construct three successive Birkhoff normal forms to describe the spectrum of $\mathcal{L}_h$ in the semiclassical limit $\hbar \rightarrow 0$. We deduce an expansion of all the eigenvalues under a threshold, in powers of $\hbar^{1/2}$.

Spectral asymptotics for the semiclassical Bochner Laplacian of a line bundle with constant rank curvature

The goal of this paper is manyfold. Firstly, we want to give a short introduction to the Bochner Laplacian and explain why it acts locally as a magnetic Laplacian. Secondly, given a confining magnetic field, we use Agmon-like estimates to reduce its spectral study to magnetic Laplacians, in the semiclassical limit. Finally, we use this to translate already-known spectral asymptotics for the magnetic Laplacian to the Bochner Laplacian.

Numerical simulation of model problems in plasticity based on field dislocation mechanics

The aim of this paper is to investigate the numerical implementation of the Field Dislocation Mechanics (FDM) theory for the simulation of dislocation-mediated plasticity. First, the mesoscale FDM theory of Acharya and Roy (2006) is recalled which permits to express the set of equations under the form of a static problem, corresponding to the determination of the local stress field for a given dislocation density distribution, complemented by an evolution problem, corresponding to the transport of the dislocation density. The static problem is solved using FFT-based techniques (Brenner et al., 2014). The main contribution of the present study is an efficient numerical scheme based on high resolution Godunov-type solvers to solve the evolution problem. Model problems of dislocation-mediated plasticity are finally considered in a simplified layer case. First, uncoupled problems with uniform velocity are considered, which permits to reproduce annihilation of dislocations and expansion of dislocation loops. Then, the FDM theory is applied to several problems of dislocation microstructures subjected to a mechanical loading.

A semiclassical Birkhoff normal form for symplectic magnetic wells

In this paper we construct a Birkhoff normal form for a semiclassical magnetic Schr{ö}dinger operator with non-degenerate magnetic field, and discrete magnetic well, defined on an even dimensional riemannian manifold M. We use this normal form to get an expansion of the first eigenvalues in powers of h^{1/2}, and semiclassical Weyl asymptotics for this operator.
