Characteristics of Bose-Einstein condensation in an optical lattice

We discuss several possible experimental signatures of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) transition for an ultracold Bose gas in an inhomogeneous optical lattice. Based on the commonly used time-of-flight imaging technique, we show that the momentum-space density profile in the first Brillouin zone, supplemented by the visibility of interference patterns, provides valuable information about the system. In particular, by crossing the BEC transition temperature, the appearance of a clear bimodal structure sets a qualitative and universal signature of this phase transition. Furthermore, the momentum distribution can also be applied to extract the condensate fraction, which may serve as a promising thermometer in such a system.

Effective low-dimensional Hamiltonian for strongly interacting atoms in a transverse trap

We derive an effective low-dimensional Hamiltonian for strongly interacting ultracold atoms in a transverse trapping potential near a wide Feshbach resonance. The Hamiltonian includes crucial information about transverse excitations in an effective model with renormalized interaction between atoms and composite dressed molecules. We fix all the parameters in the Hamiltonian for both one- and two-dimensional cases.

Level crossing in the three-body problem for strongly interacting fermions in a harmonic trap

We present a solution of the three-fermion problem in a harmonic potential across a Feshbach resonance. We compare the spectrum with that of the two-body problem and show that it is energetically unfavorable for the three fermions to occupy one lattice site rather than two. We also demonstrate the existence of an energy level crossing in the ground state with a symmetry change of its wave function, suggesting the possibility of a phase transition for the corresponding many-body case.

Signal of Bose condensation in an optical lattice at finite temperature

We discuss the experimental signal for the Bose condensation of cold atoms in an optical lattice at finite temperature. Instead of using the visibility of the interference pattern via the time-of-flight imaging, we show that the momentum space density profile in the first Brillouin zone, in particular its bimodal distribution, provides an unambiguous signal for the Bose condensation. We confirm this point with detailed calculation of the change in the atomic momentum distribution across the condensation phase transition, taking into account both the global trapping potential and the atomic interaction effects.

Simulation and detection of Dirac fermions with cold atoms in an optical lattice

We propose an experimental scheme to simulate and observe relativistic Dirac fermions with cold atoms in a hexagonal optical lattice. By controlling the lattice anisotropy, one can realize both massive and massless Dirac fermions and observe the phase transition between them. Through explicit calculations, we show that both the Bragg spectroscopy and the atomic density profile in a trap can be used to demonstrate the Dirac fermions and the associated phase transition.

General Hubbard model for strongly interacting fermions in an optical lattice and its phase detection

Based on consideration of the system symmetry and its Hilbert space, we show that strongly interacting fermions in an optical lattice or superlattice can be generically described by a lattice resonance Hamiltonian. The latter can be mapped to a general Hubbard model with particle assisted tunneling rates. We investigate the model under population imbalance and show the attractive and the repulsive models have the same complexity in phase diagram under the particle-hole mapping. Using this mapping, we propose an experimental method to detect possible exotic superfluid/magnetic phases for this system.

A scheme for demonstration of fractional statistics of anyons in an exactly solvable model

We propose a scheme to demonstrate fractional statistics of anyons in an exactly solvable lattice model proposed by Kitaev that involves four-body interactions. The required many-body ground state, as well as the anyon excitations and their braiding operations, can be conveniently realized through \textit{dynamic}laser manipulation of cold atoms in an optical lattice. Due to the perfect localization of anyons in this model, we show that a quantum circuit with only six qubits is enough for demonstration of the basic braiding statistics of anyons. This opens up the immediate possibility of proof-of-principle experiments with trapped ions, photons, or nuclear magnetic resonance systems.

Spin Hall effects for cold atoms in a light induced gauge potential

We propose an experimental scheme to observe spin Hall effects with cold atoms in a light induced gauge potential. Under an appropriate configuration, the cold atoms moving in a spatially varying laser field experience an effective spin-dependent gauge potential. Through numerical simulation, we demonstrate that such a gauge field leads to observable spin Hall currents under realistic conditions. We also discuss the quantum spin Hall state in an optical lattice.

Implementation of controlled SWAP gates for quantum fingerprinting and photonic quantum computation

We propose a scheme to implement quantum controlled SWAP gates by directing single-photon pulses to a two-sided cavity with a single trapped atom. The resultant gates can be used to realize quantum fingerprinting and universal photonic quantum computation. The performance of the scheme is characterized under realistic experimental noise with the requirements well within the reach of the current technology.

Dynamical mean-field equations for strongly interacting fermionic atoms in a potential trap

We derive a set of dynamical mean-field equations for strongly interacting fermionic atoms in a potential trap across a Feshbach resonance. Our derivation is based on a variational ansatz, which generalizes the crossover wavefunction to the inhomogeneous case, and the assumption that the order parameter is slowly varying over the size of the Cooper pairs. The equations reduce to a generalized time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation on the BEC side of the resonance. We discuss an iterative method to solve these mean-field equations, and present the solution for a harmonic trap as an illustrating example to self-consistently verify the approximations made in our derivation.

Detecting the breached pair phase in a polarized ultracold Fermi gas

We propose a method for the experimental detection of a new quantum phase, the breached pair state, in a strongly interacting ultracold Fermi gas with population imbalance. We show that through the time-of-flight Raman imaging, the presence of such a phase can be unambiguously determined with a measurement of the momentum-space phase separation of the minority spin component. To guide the experimental efforts, the momentum-space density profiles are calculated under typical experimental conditions.

Phase diagram of a polarized Fermi gas across a Feshbach resonance in a potential trap

We map out the detailed phase diagram of a trapped ultracold Fermi gas with population imbalance across a wide Feshbach resonance. We show that under the local density approximation, the properties of the atoms in any (anisotropic) harmonic traps are universally characterized by three dimensionless parameters: the normalized temperature, the dimensionless interaction strength, and the population imbalance. We then discuss the possible quantum phases in the trap, and quantitatively characterize their phase boundaries in various typical parameter regions.

Superfluid shells for trapped fermions with mass and population imbalance

We map out the phase diagram of strongly interacting fermions in a potential trap with mass and population imbalance between the two spin components. As a unique feature distinctively different from the equal-mass case, we show that the superfluid here forms a shell structure which is not simply connected in space. Different types of normal states occupy the trap regions inside and outside this superfluid shell. We calculate the atomic density profiles, which provide an experimental signature for the superfluid shell structure.

States of fermionic atoms in an optical superlattice across a Feshbach resonance

We investigate states of fermionic atoms across a broad Feshbach resonance in an optical superlattice which allows interaction only among a small number of lattice sites. The states are in general described by superpositions of atomic resonating valence bonds and dressed molecules. As one scans the magnetic field, level crossing is found between states with different symmetry properties, which may correspond to a quantum phase transition in the many-body case.

Scalable Generation of Graph-State Entanglement through Realistic Linear Optics

We propose a scheme for efficient construction of graph states using realistic linear optics, imperfect photon source and single-photon detectors. For any many-body entanglement represented by tree graph states, we prove that the overall preparation and detection efficiency scales only polynomially with the size of the graph, no matter how small the efficiencies for the photon source and the detectors.

Ultrafast Coherent Coupling of Atomic Hyperfine and Photon Frequency Qubits

We demonstrate ultrafast coherent coupling between an atomic qubit stored in a single trapped cadmium ion and a photonic qubit represented by two resolved frequencies of a photon. Such ultrafast coupling is crucial for entangling networks of remotely-located trapped ions through photon interference, and is also a key component for realizing ultrafast quantum gates between Coulomb-coupled ions.

Conditions of Low Dimensionality for Strongly Interacting Atoms Under a Transverse Trap

For a dilute atomic gas in a strong transverse trapping potential, one normally expects that, in the ground state, the gas will populate only the lowest transverse level. We show, however, that for the strongly interacting gas under a Feshbach resonance, the ground state includes a large fraction of atoms in excited levels of the trap, even if the gas is very dilute and the trap is very strong. This is because the effective atom-molecule coupling is typically enhanced to many times the trap mode spacing by an induced confinement along the untrapped dimension(s). Thus one cannot ''freeze out'' the transverse degrees of freedom except under certain conditions.
