Using {\sc top-c} for Commodity Parallel Computing in Cosmic Ray Physics Simulations

{\sc top-c} (Task Oriented Parallel C) is a freely available package for parallel computing. It is designed to be easy to learn and to have good tolerance for the high latencies that are common in commodity networks of computers. It has been successfully used in a wide range of examples, providing linear speedup with the number of computers. A brief overview of {\sc top-c} is provided, along with recent experience with cosmic ray physics simulations.

Fractal Electromagnetic Showers

We study the self-similar structure of electromagnetic showers and introduce the notion of the fractal dimension of a shower. Studies underway of showers in various materials and at various energies are presented, and the range over which the fractal scaling behaviour is observed is discussed. Applications to fast shower simulations and identification, particularly in the context of extensive air showers, are also discussed.

Simulation of Water Cerenkov Detectors Using {\sc geant4}

We present a detailed simulation of the performance of water Cerenkov detectors suitable for use in the Pierre Auger Observatory. Using {\sc geant4}, a flexible object-oriented simulation program, including all known physics processes, has been developed. The program also allows interactive visualization, and can easily be modified for any experimental setup.

A pot of gold at the end of the cosmic "raynbow"?

We critically review the common belief that ultrahigh energy cosmic rays are protons or atomic nuclei with masses not exceeding that of iron. We find that heavier nuclei are indeed possible, and discuss possible sources and acceleration mechanisms for such primaries. We also show detailed simulations of extensive air showers produced by ``superheavy'' nuclei, and discuss prospects for their detection in future experiments.

Unmasking the tail of the cosmic ray spectrum

A re-examination of the energy cosmic ray spectrum above $10^{20}$ eV is presented. The overall data-base provides evidence, albeit still statistically limited, that non-nucleon primaries could be present at the end of the spectrum. In particular, the possible appearance of superheavy nuclei (seldom discussed in the literature) is analysed in detail.

Heavy nuclei at the end of the cosmic ray spectrum?

We provide an account of the possible acceleration of iron nuclei up to energies $\sim300$ EeV in the nearby, metally-rich starburst galaxy NGC 253. It is suggested that particles can escape from the nuclear region with energies of $\sim10^{15}$ eV and then could be reaccelerated at the terminal shock of the galactic superwind generated by the starburst, avoiding in this way the photodisintegration expected if the nuclei were accelerated in the central region of high photon density. We have also made estimates of the expected arrival spectrum, which displays a strong dependency with the energy cutoff at the source.

Gravitational memory of natural wormholes

A traversable wormhole solution of general scalar-tensor field equations is presented. We have shown, after a numerical analysis for the behavior of the scalar field of Brans-Dicke theory, that the solution is completely singularity--free. Furthermore, the analysis of more general scalar field dependent coupling constants indicates that the gravitational memory phenomenon may play an important role in the fate of natural wormholes.

Extensive air showers rounded up by aires + sibyll/qgsjet

An analysis of the differences introduced by the hadronic interaction event generators during the development of the showers is presented. We have generated proton and nuclei induced air showers with energies up to $10^{20.5}$ eV, ``herded up'' by the code aires + sibyll/ qgsjet. The most relevant observables are taken into account for the comparison.

High energy protons from PKS 1333-33

In this letter we give an account of the possible acceleration of protons in the outer radio lobes of the active galaxy PKS 1333-33. We also make estimates of the arrival energy spectrum.

Hadronic interactions models beyond collider energies

Studies of the influence of different hadronic models on extensive air showers at ultra-high energies are presented. The hadronic models considered are those implemented in the well-known QGSJET and SIBYLL event generators. The different approaches used in both codes to model the underlying physics is analyzed using computer simulations performed with the program AIRES. The most relevant observables for both single collisions and air showers are studied for primary energies ranging from $10^{14}$ eV up to $10^{20.5}$ eV. In addition, the evolution of lateral and energy distributions during the shower development is presented. Our analysis seems to indicate that the behaviour of shower observables does not largely reflect the strong differences observed in single collisions.

A depression before a bump in the highest energy cosmic ray spectrum

We re-examine the interaction of ultra high energy nuclei with the microwave background radiation. We find that the giant dipole resonance leaves a new signature in the differential energy spectrum of iron sources located around 3 Mpc: A depression before the bump which is followed by the expected cutoff.

Effect of the 3K background radiation on ultrahigh energy cosmic rays

In this work we re-examine the opacity of the cosmic background radiation to the propagation of extremely high energy cosmic rays. We use the continuous energy loss approximation to provide spectral modification factors for several hypothesized cosmic ray sources. Earlier problems with this approximation are resolved including the effects of resonances other than the $Δ$.

Centaurus A as a source of extragalactic cosmic rays with arrival energies well beyond the GZK cutoff

The ultra--high energy cosmic rays recently detected by several air shower experiments could have an extragalactic origin. In this case, the nearest active galaxy Centaurus A might be the source of the most energetic particles ever detected on Earth. We have used recent radio observations in order to estimate the arrival energy of the protons accelerated by strong shock fronts in the outer parts of this southern radio source. We expect detections corresponding to particles with energies up to $\sim 2.2 \times 10^{21}$ eV and an arrival direction of ($l \approx 310^{\circ}$, $b \approx 20^{\circ}$) in galactic coordinates. The future Southern Hemisphere Pierre Auger Observatory might provide a decisive test for extragalactic models of the origin of the ultra--high energy cosmic rays.
