Tunka-133 EAS Cherenkov Array: Status of 2007

The new EAS Cherenkov array Tunka-133, with about 1 km**2 sensitive area, is being installed in the Tunka Valley since the end of 2005. This array will permit a detailed study of the cosmic ray energy spectrum and the mass composition in the energy range of 10**15-10**18 eV with a unique method. The array will consist of 19 clusters, each composed of 7 optical detectors. The first cluster started operation in October 2006. We describe the data acquisition system and present preliminary results from data taken with the first cluster.

Cosmic Ray Energy Spectrum and Mass Composition from 10^15 to 10^17 eV by Data of the Tunka EAS Cherenkov Array

We present results of an improved analysis of the experimental data of the EAS Cherenkov array Tunka-25. A new function to fit the Cherenkov light lateral distribution LDF at core distances from 0 to 350 m has been developed on the base of CORSIKA simulations and applied to the analysis of Tunka data. Two methods to estimate the EAS maximum position have been used. The one is based on the pulse FWHM, the other on the light LDF. We present the primary energy spectrum in the energy range 10^15 - 10^17 eV. The use of the depth of the EAS maximum to determine the mean mass composition is discussed.

Cosmic Ray Energy Measurement with EAS Cherenkov Light: Experiment QUEST and CORSIKA Simulation

A new method of a primary cosmic particle energy measurement with the extensive air shower (EAS) technique has been developed by exploiting: a) the joint analysis of the shower size, obtained by the EAS-TOP array, and of the EAS Cherenkov light lateral distribution (LDF), obtained by the QUEST array, and b) simulations based on the CORSIKA code. The method is based on the strict correlation between the size/energy ratio and the steepness of the Cherenkov light lateral distribution and has been compared with a "classical" one based on the Cherenkov light flux at a fixed distance (175 m) from the EAS core. The independence of the energy measurement both on the mass of primary particle and the hadronic interaction model used for the analysis is shown. Based on this approach the experimental integral intensity of cosmic rays flux with energy more than 3*10^15 eV is obtained with good systematic and statistical accuracy.

Observation of Optical Flashes of the Night Star Sky on the Atmospheric Cherenkov Installation Tunka-13

Experiment on the study of fluctuation of night glow is conducted on the base of 13 module atmospheric Cherenkov telescope TUNKA-13.Basic task of TUNKA-13 is registration of light from Extended Air Shower (EAS) initiated by primary cosmic particles. Observation of light flashes radiating in nigght atmosphere is one more experiment which is run for TUNKA-13 to study the background condition for EAS registration. At a period from December 1997 on a May 1998 was registered 149 light flashes of radiwting night atmosphere with duration from 16 ms to 190 seconds. General time of night observing has formed 237 hours. Coincidence of optical flashes with the gamma-bursts from the catalogue of BATSE experiment of observatories "Compton" was analysed.

On the Velocity of Light Signals in the Deep Underwater Neutrino Experiments

During the last few years deep underwater neutrino telescopes of a new generation with dimensions close to 100 m or more were taken into operation. For the correct track reconstruction and for the interpretation of light pulses from calibration lasers one has to use the group velocity for light signals. The difference between group velocity leads to an additional delay of about 10 ns for a distance of 100 m between light source and photjmultiplier. From the time of the appearance of the first projects of deep underwater neutrino telescopes in the middle of 70th this fact was never mentioned in the literature.

The Experimental Limits on Q-ball Flux with the Baikal Deep Underwater Array "Gyrlyanda"

Supersymmetric models allow for stable non-topological solitons, Q-balls, which can be produced in the early Universe and contribute to dark matter. Experimental signature of electrically neutral Q-balls is, in fact, the same as is expected for superheavy magnetic monopoles catalyzing baryon decay. Here we use the upper limits on monopole flux obtained with deep underwater Cherenkov array "Gyrlyanda" which operated in the Baikal lake in 1984-90 with 267 days of live time to obtain the limit on Q-ball flux. The last has been found to be equal to 3.9 x 10^{-16} cm^{-2} sr^{-1} s^{-1} (90% CL). This result is discussed and compared with other restrictions.
