Metastability of the Three-Dimensional Carbon Cluster Prismane C$_8$

Stability of recently predicted cage-like carbon cluster C$_8$ (prismane) against its transformations to structures lying at lower energies is studied theoretically. The smallest energy barrier inhibiting prismane transformation is shown to be 0.44 eV, in qualitative agreement with the value of activation energy for prismane decay calculated by molecular dynamics simulations. A rather high value of the barrier suggests the possibility of experimental observation of this cluster at ambient pressure.

Critical temperature of an anisotropic superconductor containing both nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities

The combined effect of both nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities on the superconducting transition temperature is studied theoretically within the BCS model. An expression for the critical temperature as a function of potential and spin-flip scattering rates is derived for a two-dimensional superconductor with arbitrary in-plane anisotropy of the superconducting order parameter, ranging from isotropic s-wave to d-wave (or any pairing state with nonzero angular momentum) and including anisotropic s-wave and mixed (d+s)-wave as particular cases. This expression generalizes the well-known Abrikosov-Gor'kov formula for the critical temperature of impure superconductors. The effect of defects and impurities in high temperature superconductors is discussed.

Non-Dissipative Logic Device NOT Based on Two Coupled Quantum Dots

Non-dissipative dynamics of interacting electrons in two tunnel-coupled quantum dots is studied theoretically within the framework of the Hubbard model. Various values of intra-dot Coulomb repulsion energy $U$ and inter-dot tunneling energy $V$ are considered, which correspond to various size of the dots and to various distance between them. In the ground state, the average value of the spin projection (magnetic moment) at each dot is zero. The input signal (the local external magnetic field $H$) applied to one of the dots at a time $t=0$ causes the electronic subsystem to evolve in such a way that magnetic moments of quantum dots become oriented in the opposite directions at any time $t>0$. For any set of $U$ and $V$, there exist optimal values of $H$ and $t$ which maximize the absolute values of magnetic moments at both dots, and magnetic moments become almost saturated. Thus, the antiferromagnetic-like spin ordering can be realized at the stage of coherent temporal evolution, well before the relaxation to a new ground state at the sacrifice of inelastic processes. This effect ("dynamical antiferromagnetism") may be used for implementation of a logic function NOT in an extremely short time. A possibility to use the arrays of quantum dots as high-speed single-electron devices of new generation is discussed.

Formation of Clusters of Interstitial Carbon Atoms in Graphite due to Deformation Interaction and their Spatial Arrangement

Formation of clusters of interlayer interstitial carbon atoms in graphite is studied by means of molecular dynamics simulation. It is shown that the deformation potential is attractive for interstitials located in one interlayer region and repulsive for interstitials located in different interlayer regions. As a result, relatively small interstitial clusters are formed which are arranged in a checkerboard-like order.

Single-electron computing without dissipation

A possibility to perform single-electron computing without dissipation in the array of tunnel-coupled quantum dots is studied theoretically, taking the spin gate NOT (inverter) as an example. It is shown that the logical operation can be realized at the stage of unitary evolution of electron subsystem, though complete switching of the inverter cannot be achieved in a reasonable time at realistic values of model parameters. An optimal input magnetic field is found as a function of inter-dot tunneling energy and intra-dot Coulomb repulsion energy.
