Polarons and bipolarons in Rydberg-dressed extended Bose-Hubbard model

Impurities immersed in hard-core Bose gases offer exciting opportunities to explore polaron and bipolaron physics. We investigate the ground state properties of a single and a pair of impurities throughout the superfluid and insulating (charge density wave) phases of the bosonic environment. In the superfluid phase, the impurity exhibits polaron-like behavior, forming a dressed quasiparticle. In contrast, in the insulating phase, the impurity regains its particle-like character, moving through a potential landscape shaped by the charge density wave order. Moreover, we show that two impurities can form a bound state even in the absence of an explicit impurity-impurity coupling. We establish the stability of this bound state within both the superfluid and insulating phases. Our results offer valuable insights for ongoing lattice polaron experiments with ultracold gases.

Many-body bound states and induced interactions of charged impurities in a bosonic bath

Induced interactions and bound states of charge carriers immersed in a quantum medium are crucial for the investigation of quantum transport. Ultracold atom-ion systems can provide a convenient platform for studying this problem. Here, we investigate the static properties of one and two ionic impurities in a bosonic bath using quantum Monte Carlo methods. We identify three bipolaronic regimes depending on the strength of the atom-ion potential and the number of its two-body bound states: a perturbative regime resembling the situation of a pair of neutral impurities, a non-perturbative regime that loses the quasi-particle character of the former, and a many-body bound state regime that can arise only in the presence of a bound state in the two-body potential. We further reveal strong bath-induced interactions between the two ionic polarons. Our findings show that numerical simulations are indispensable for describing highly correlated impurity models.

Catalyzation of supersolidity in binary dipolar condensates

Breakthrough experiments have newly explored the fascinating physics of dipolar quantum droplets and supersolids. The recent realization of dipolar mixtures opens further intriguing possibilities. We show that under rather general conditions, the presence of a second component catalyzes droplet nucleation and supersolidity in an otherwise unmodulated condensate. Droplet catalyzation in miscible mixtures, which may occur even for a surprisingly small impurity doping, results from a local roton instability triggered by the doping-dependent modification of the effective dipolar strength. The catalyzation mechanism may trigger the formation of a two-fluid supersolid, characterized by a generally different superfluid fraction of each component, which opens intriguing possibilities for the future study of spin physics in dipolar supersolids.

Anomalous buoyancy of quantum bubbles in immiscible Bose mixtures

Buoyancy is a well-known effect in immiscible binary Bose-Einstein condensates. Depending on the differential confinement experienced by the two components, a bubble of one component sitting at the center of the other eventually floats to the surface, around which it spreads either totally or partially. We discuss how quantum fluctuations may significantly change the volume and position of immiscible bubbles. We consider the particular case of two miscible components, forming a pseudo-scalar bubble condensate with enhanced quantum fluctuations (quantum bubble), immersed in a bath provided by a third component, with which they are immiscible. We show that in such a peculiar effective binary mixture, quantum fluctuations change the equilibrium of pressures that define the bubble volume and modify as well the criterion for buoyancy. Once buoyancy sets in, in contrast to the mean-field case, quantum fluctuations may place the bubble at an intermediate position between the center and the surface. At the surface, the quantum bubble may transition into a floating self-bound droplet.

Universal Properties of Anisotropic Dipolar Bosons in Two Dimensions

The energy of ultra-dilute quantum many-body systems is known to exhibit a universal dependence on the gas parameter $x=n a_0^d$, with $n$ the density, $d$ the dimensionality of the space ($d=1,2,3$) and $a_0$ the $s$-wave scattering length. The universal regime typically extends up to $x\approx 0.001$, while at larger values specific details of the interaction start to be relevant and different model potentials lead to different results. Dipolar systems are peculiar in this regard since the anisotropy of the interaction makes $a_0$ depend on the polarization angle $α$, so different combinations of $n$ and $α$ can lead to the same value of the gas parameter $x$. In this work we analyze the scaling properties of dipolar bosons in two dimensions as a function of the density and polarization dependent scattering length up to very large values of the gas parameter $x$. Using Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods we study the energy and the main structural and coherence properties of the ground state of a gas of dipolar bosons by varying the density and scattering length for fixed gas parameter. We find that the dipolar interaction shows relevant scaling laws up to unusually large values of $x$ that hold almost to the boundaries in the phase diagram where a transition to a stripe phase takes place.

Finite-range effects in the unitary Fermi polaron

Quantum Monte Carlo techniques are employed to study the properties of polarons in an ultracold Fermi gas, at $T= 0,$ and in the unitary regime using both a zero-range model and a square-well potential. For a fixed density, the potential range is varied and results are extrapolated and compared against a zero-range model. A discussion regarding the choice of an interacting potential with a finite range is presented. We compute the polaron effective mass, the polaron binding energy, and the effective coupling between them. The latter is obtained using the Landau-Pomeranchuk's weakly interacting quasiparticle model. The contact parameter is estimated by fitting the pair distribution function of atoms in different spin states.

Ionic polaron in a Bose-Einstein condensate

The presence of strong interactions in a many-body quantum system can lead to a variety of exotic effects. Here we show that even in a comparatively simple setup consisting of a charged impurity in a weakly interacting bosonic medium the competition of length scales gives rise to a highly correlated mesoscopic state. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we unravel its vastly different polaronic properties compared to neutral quantum impurities. Moreover, we identify a transition between the regime amenable to conventional perturbative treatment in the limit of weak atom-ion interactions and a many-body bound state with vanishing quasi-particle residue composed of hundreds of atoms. In order to analyze the structure of the corresponding states we examine the atom-ion and atom-atom correlation functions which both show nontrivial properties. Our findings are directly relevant to experiments using hybrid atom-ion setups that have recently attained the ultracold regime.

Dynamical formation of polarons in a Bose-Einstein condensate: A variational approach

We investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of an impurity coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate, systematically compared with recent experimental results [M. G. Skou et al., Nat. Phys. (2021)]. The dynamics of the impurity is tracked down by using a time-dependent variational coherent ansatz. For weak coupling between the impurity and the bath, analytical expressions for the time-dependent overlap (or contrast) are derived, matching quite well with previous findings obtained within a master equation approach. For strong coupling instead, the variational ansatz provides a good quantitative description of the polaron dynamics, in particular, in signaling the transition from the few to the many-body correlated regime where polarons are expected to form.

Quantum droplets of dipolar mixtures

Recently achieved two-component dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates open exciting possibilities for the study of mixtures of ultra-dilute quantum liquids. While non-dipolar self-bound mixtures are necessarily miscible with an approximately fixed ratio between the two densities, the density ratio for the dipolar case is free. As a result, self-bound dipolar mixtures present qualitatively novel and much richer physics, characterized by three possible ground-state phases: miscible, symmetric immiscible and asymmetric immiscible, which may in principle occur at any population imbalance. Self-bound immiscible droplets are possible due to mutual non-local inter-component attraction, which results in the formation of a droplet molecule. Moreover, our analysis of the impurity regime, shows that quantum fluctuations in the majority component crucially modify the miscibility of impurities. Our work opens intriguing perspectives for the exploration of spinor physics in ultra-dilute liquids, which should resemble to some extent that of 4He-3He droplets and impurity-doped helium droplets.

Strong coupling Bose polarons in a two-dimensional gas

We study the properties of Bose polarons in two dimensions using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. Results for the binding energy, the effective mass, and the quasiparticle residue are reported for a typical strength of interactions in the gas and for a wide range of impurity-gas coupling strengths. A lower and an upper branch of the quasiparticle exist. The lower branch corresponds to an attractive polaron and spans from the regime of weak coupling where the impurity acts as a small density perturbation of the surrounding medium to deep bound states which involve many particles from the bath and extend as far as the healing length. The upper branch corresponds to an excited state where due to repulsion a low-density bubble forms around the impurity but might be unstable against decay into many-body bound states. Interaction effects strongly affect the quasiparticle properties of the polaron. In particular, in the strongly correlated regime, the impurity features a vanishing quasiparticle residue, signaling the transition from an almost free quasiparticle to a bound state involving many atoms from the bath.

Analyzing a Bose polaron across resonant interactions

Recently, two independent experiments reported the observation of long-lived polarons in a Bose-Einstein condensate, providing an excellent setting to study the generic scenario of a mobile impurity interacting with a quantum reservoir. Here, we expand the experimental analysis by disentangling the effects of trap inhomogeneities and the many-body continuum in one of these experiments. This makes it possible to extract the energy of the polaron at a well-defined density as a function of the interaction strength. Comparisons with quantum Monte-Carlo as well as diagrammatic calculations show good agreement, and provide a more detailed picture of the polaron properties at stronger interactions than previously possible. Moreover, we develop a semi-classical theory for the motional dynamics and three-body loss of the polarons, which partly explains a previously unresolved discrepancy between theory and experimental observations for repulsive interactions. Finally, we utilize quantum Monte-Carlo calculations to demonstrate that the findings reported in the two experiments are consistent with each other.

Ground-state properties of Dipolar Bose polarons

We consider a quantum impurity immersed in a dipolar Bose Einstein condensate and study the properties of the emerging polaron. We calculate the energy, effective mass and quasi-particle residue of the dipolar polaron and investigate their behaviour with respect to the strength of zero-range contact and a long-range dipolar interactions among the condensate atoms and with the impurity. While quantum fluctuations in the case of pure contact interactions typically lead to an increase of the polaron energy, dipole-dipole interactions are shown to cause a sign reversal. The described signatures of dipolar interactions are shown to be observable with current experimental capabilities based on quantum gases of atoms with large magnetic dipole moments such as Erbium or Dysprosium condensates.

Bipolarons in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Mobile impurities in a Bose-Einstein condensate form quasiparticles called polarons. Here, we show that two such polarons can bind to form a bound bipolaron state. Its emergence is caused by an induced nonlocal interaction mediated by density oscillations in the condensate, and we derive using field theory an effective Schrödinger equation describing this for arbitrarily strong impurity-boson interaction. We furthermore compare with Quantum Monte Carlo simulations finding remarkable agreement, which underlines the predictive power of the developed theory. It is found that bipolaron formation typically requires strong impurity interactions beyond the validity of more commonly used weak-coupling approaches that lead to local Yukawa-type interactions. We predict that the bipolarons are observable in present experiments and describe a procedure to probe their properties.

The Bose polaron problem: effect of mass imbalance on binding energy

By means of Quantum Monte Carlo methods we calculate the binding energy of an impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate at T = 0. The focus is on the attractive branch of the Bose polaron and on the role played by the mass imbalance between the impurity and the surrounding particles. For an impurity resonantly coupled to the bath, we investigate the dependence of the binding energy on the mass ratio and on the interaction strength within the medium. In particular, we determine the equation of state in the case of a static (infinite mass) impurity, where three-body correlations are irrelevant and the result is expected to be a universal function of the gas parameter. For the mass ratio corresponding to $^{40}$K impurities in a gas of $^{87}$Rb atoms we provide an explicit comparison with the experimental findings of a recent study carried out at JILA.

Impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate: study of the attractive and repulsive branch using quantum Monte-Carlo methods

We investigate the properties of an impurity immersed in a dilute Bose gas at zero temperature using quantum Monte-Carlo methods. The interactions between bosons are modeled by a hard sphere potential with scattering length $a$, whereas the interactions between the impurity and the bosons are modeled by a short-range, square-well potential where both the sign and the strength of the scattering length $b$ can be varied by adjusting the well depth. We characterize the attractive and the repulsive polaron branch by calculating the binding energy and the effective mass of the impurity. Furthermore, we investigate structural properties of the bath, such as the impurity-boson contact parameter and the change of the density profile around the impurity. At the unitary limit of the impurity-boson interaction, we find that the effective mass of the impurity remains smaller than twice its bare mass, while the binding energy scales with $\hbar^2n^{2/3}/m$, where $n$ is the density of the bath and $m$ is the common mass of the impurity and the bosons in the bath. The implications for the phase diagram of binary Bose-Bose mixtures at small concentrations are also discussed.

Momentum-energy tensor associated to the quasiparticles in anisotropic superconductors

From a Lagrangian density for the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations in anisotropic superconductors, we find the momentum-energy tensor associated to the quasiparticles of the system. For this, we make infinitesimal translations on both space and time and we use the Noether's theorem. We prove that beyond to the usual terms associated to the electron-hole dynamic in electromagnetic potentials, appears terms that involves the pair potential and that are obtained from the coupling of the electron-like and hole-like quasiparticles.
