Charged current neutrino induced coherent pion production

We analyze the neutrino induced charged current coherent pion production at the energies of interest for recent experiments like K2K and MiniBooNE. Medium effects in the production mechanism and the distortion of the pion wave function, obtained solving the Klein Gordon equation with a microscopic optical potential, are included in the calculation. We find a strong reduction of the cross section due to these effects and also substantial modifications of the energy distributions of the final lepton and pion.

Exciting pions in nuclei: DCX and Electroproduction in the resonance region

We describe the double charge exchange (DCX) reaction of pions with different nuclear targets at incident kinetic energies of 120-180 MeV within the GiBUU transport framework. The DCX process is highly sensitive to details of the interactions of pions with the nuclear medium and, therefore, represents a major benchmark for any model of pion scattering off nuclei at low and intermediate energies. We achieve a good quantitative agreement with the extensive data set obtained at LAMPF. Furthermore, we present first results on electron scattering off nuclei for beam energies of 700-1500 MeV and virtualities of Q^2<700 MeV^2. Including quasi-elastic and pion- production processes and employing in-medium kinematics and realistic form factors, we evaluate inclusive cross sections and compare to data obtained at the ADONE storage ring (Frascati).

Neutral current neutrino-nucleus interactions at intermediate energies

We have extended our model for charged current neutrino-nucleus interactions to neutral current reactions. For the elementary neutrino-nucleon interaction, we take into account quasielastic scattering, Delta excitation and the excitation of the resonances in the second resonance region. Our model for the neutrino-nucleus collisions includes in-medium effects such as Fermi motion, Pauli blocking, nuclear binding, and final-state interactions. They are implemented by means of the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) coupled-channel transport model. This allows us to study exclusive channels, namely pion production and nucleon knockout. We find that final-state interactions modify considerably the distributions through rescattering, charge-exchange and absorption. Side-feeding induced by charge-exchange scattering is important in both cases. In the case of pions, there is a strong absorption associated with the in-medium pionless decay modes of the Delta, while nucleon knockout exhibits a considerable enhancement of low energy nucleons due to rescattering. At neutrino energies above 1 GeV, we also obtain that the contribution to nucleon knockout from Delta excitation is comparable to that from quasielastic scattering.

In-Medium Effects in Photo- and Neutrino-Induced Reactions on Nuclei

In this talk various aspects of in-medium behavior of hadrons are discussed with an emphasis on observable effects. It is stressed that final state interactions can have a major effect on observables and thus have to be considered as part of the theory. This is demonstrated with examples from photo-nucleus and neutrino-nucleus interactions.

Pion induced double charge exchange reactions in the Delta resonance region

We have applied the Giessen BUU (GiBUU) transport model to the description of the double charge exchange (DCX) reaction of pions with different nuclear targets at incident kinetic energies of 120-180 MeV . The DCX process is highly sensitive to details of the interactions of pions with the nuclear medium and, therefore, represents a major benchmark for any model of pion scattering off nuclei at low and intermediate energies. The impact of surface effects, such as the neutron skins of heavy nuclei, is investigated. The dependence of the total cross section on the nuclear mass number is also discussed. We achieve a good quantitative agreement with the extensive data set obtained at LAMPF. Furthermore, we compare the solutions of the transport equations obtained in the test-particle ansatz using two different schemes - the full and the parallel ensemble method.

Charged Current Neutrino Nucleus Interactions at Intermediate Energies

We have developed a model to describe the interactions of neutrinos with nucleons and nuclei, focusing on the region of the quasielastic and Delta(1232) peaks. We describe neutrino nucleon collisions with a fully relativistic formalism which incorporates state-of-the-art parametrizations of the form factors for both the nucleon and the N-Delta transition. The model has then been extended to finite nuclei, taking into account nuclear effects such as Fermi motion, Pauli blocking (both within the local density approximation), nuclear binding and final state interactions. The in-medium modification of the Delta resonance due to Pauli blocking and collisional broadening have also been included. Final state interactions are implemented by means of the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) coupled-channel transport model. Results for charged current inclusive cross sections and exclusive channels as pion production and nucleon knockout are presented and discussed.

Neutrino interactions with nucleons and nuclei at intermediate energies

We investigate neutrino-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies incorporating quasielastic scattering and Delta(1232) excitation as elementary processes, together with Fermi motion, Pauli blocking and mean-field potentials in the nuclear medium. A full coupled-channel treatment of final state interactions is achieved with a semiclassical BUU transport model. Results for inclusive reactions and nucleon knockout are presented.

Modelling Nuclear Effects in Neutrino Scattering

We have developed a model to describe the interactions of neutrinos with nucleons and nuclei via charged and neutral currents, focusing on the region of the quasielastic and Delta(1232) peaks. For neutrino nucleon collisions a fully relativistic formalism is used. The extension to finite nuclei has been done in the framework of a coupled-channel BUU transport model where we have studied exclusive channels taking into account in-medium effects and final state interactions.

In-Medium Properties of Hadrons - Observables II

In this review we discuss the observable consequences of in-medium changes of hadronic properties in reactions with elementary probes, and in particular photons, on nuclei. After an outline of the theoretical method used we focus on a discussion of actual observables in photonuclear reactions; we discuss in detail $2π$- and vector-meson production. We show that the $2π^0$ photoproduction data can be well described by final state interactions of the pions produced whereas the semi-charged $π^0π^\pm$ channel exhibits a major discrepancy with theory. For $ω$ production on nuclei in the TAPS/CB@ELSA experiment we analyse the $π^0γ$ decay channel, and illustrate the strength of the method by simulating experimental acceptance problems. Completely free of final state interactions is dilepton production in the few GeV range. We show that the sensitivity of this decay channel to changes of hadronic properties in medium in photonuclear reactions on nuclei is as large as in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions and make predictions for the on-going G7 experiment at JLAB. Finally we discuss that hadron production in nuclei at 10 -- 20 GeV photon energies can give important information on the hadronization process, and in particular on the time-scales involved. We show here detailed calculations for the low-energy (12 GeV) run at HERMES and predictions for planned experiments at JLAB.

Low-energy pi pi photoproduction off nuclei

In the present paper we investigate pi0 pi0 and pi(+/-)pi0 photoproduction off complex nuclei at incident beam energies of 400-460 MeV. Simulations of two pion photoproduction on protons and nuclei are performed by means of a semi-classical BUU transport model including a full coupled-channel treatment of the final state interactions. Elastic scattering of the final state pions with the nucleons in the surrounding nuclear medium is found to yield a downward shift of the pi pi invariant mass distribution. We show that the target mass dependence of the pi0 pi0 invariant mass spectrum as measured by the TAPS collaboration can be explained without introducing medium effects beyond absorption and quasi-elastic scattering of the final state particles. On the other hand, we find considerable discrepancies with the data in the pi(+/-)pi0 channel, which are not understood.

Inclusive pion double charge exchange on Oxygen(16) at 0.6-1.1 GeV

The inclusive pion double charge exchange (DCX) on oxygen nuclei has been measured in the region where additional pion production is kinematically forbidden. The experiment was performed at ITEP PS at incident pi- kinetic energies T_0= 0.59, 0.75 and 1.1 GeV. The integrated forward differential cross section was found to decrease with energy slowly. At 1.1 GeV it exceeds the theoretical prediction within the conventional sequential single charge exchange mechanism with a neutral pion in the intermediate state (Glauber elastic rescattering) by about half an order of magnitude. The sequential mechanism with two pions in the intermediate state (Glauber inelastic rescatterings), which was proposed recently, seems to be able to explain the observed slow energy dependence and allows to predict the DCX cross section for higher energies.

Nuclear response functions for the N-N*(1440) transition

Parity-conserving and -violating response functions are computed for the inclusive electroexcitation of the N*(1440)(Roper) resonance in nuclear matter modeled as a relativistic Fermi gas. Using various empirical parameterizations and theoretical models of the N-N*(1440) transition form factors, the sensitivity of the response functions to details of the structure of the Roper resonance is investigated. The possibility of disentangling this resonance from the contribution of Delta electroproduction in nuclei is addressed. Finally, the contributions of the Roper resonance to the longitudinal scaling function and to the Coulomb sum rule are also explored.

Phi meson propagation in a hot hadronic gas

The Hidden Local Symmetry Lagrangian is used to study the interactions of phi mesons with other pseudoscalar and vector mesons in a hadronic gas at finite temperature. We have found a significantly small phi mean free path (less than 2.4 fm at T > 170 MeV) due to large collision rates with rho mesons, kaons and predominantly K* in spite of their heavy mass. This implies that phi mesons produced after hadronization in relativistic heavy ion collisions will not leave the hadronic system without scattering. The effect of these interactions on the time evolution of the phi density in the expanding hadronic fireball is investigated.

Two-pion decay modes of the N*(1440) in n p -> d pi pi

A simple model for the n p -> d pi pi reaction has been developed. It is shown that the deuteron momentum spectra measured at T_n = 795 MeV can be understood in terms of the Roper excitation and its N pi pi decay modes. A similar pattern, recently observed in p p -> p p pi+ pi-, can be explained in the same way.

Influence of nucleonic motion in Relativistic Fermi Gas inclusive responses

Impulsive hadronic descriptions of electroweak processes in nuclei involve two distinctly different elements: one stems from the nuclear many-body physics --- the medium --- which is rather similar for the various inclusive response functions, and the other embodies the responses of the hadrons themselves to the electroweak probe and varies with the channel selected. In this letter we investigate within the context of the relativistic Fermi gas in both the quasi-elastic and $N\toΔ$ regimes the interplay between these two elements. Specifically, we focus on expansions in the one small parameter in the problem, namely, the momentum of a nucleon in the initial wave function compared with the hadronic scale, the nucleon mass. Both parity-conserving and -violating inclusive responses are studied and the interplay between longitudinal ($L$) and transverse ($T$ and $T'$) contributions is highlighted.

Charged current weak production of the Delta resonance

The charge changing weak production of Delta in nucleons and nuclei is studied. The reactions e^{-} p -> Delta^{0} ν_{e} and e^{+} p -> Delta^{++} \barν_{e} are considered as a possible source of information about the weak N-Delta transition form factors. The low q^2 BNL data on neutrino production of Delta are used to extract the axial vector N-Delta coupling, taking into account the deuteron structure and the Delta width. Finally, pion production induced by neutrinos in ^{16}O in the Delta region, relevant to atmospheric neutrino experiments, is investigated.

The role of the Roper resonance in n p --> d (pi pi)

In this work, a model for the n p --> d (pi pi) reaction is developed. It is shown that the structure of the deuteron momentum spectra for a neutron beam momentum of 1.46 GeV can be explained as a consequence of the interplay of two mechanisms involving the excitation of the N^*(1440) resonance and its subsequent decay into N (pi pi)^{T=0}_{S-wave} and Delta pi respectively. The relevance of the present analysis for the study of the Roper excitation and decay properties, as well as for the interpretation of other two-pion production experiments is discussed.

Two Pion Production in Nucleon-Nucleon Collisions at Intermediate Energies

We have developed a model for the N N --> N N pi pi reaction and evaluated cross sections for the different charged channels. The low energy part of those channels where the pions can be in an isospin zero state is dominated by N* excitation, driven by an isoscalar source followed by the decay N* --> N (pi pi, T=0, s-wave). At higher energies, and in channels where the pions are not in T=0, Delta excitation mechanisms become relevant.
