A Comparison of the Performance of the Molecular Dynamics Simulation Package GROMACS Implemented in the SYCL and CUDA Programming Models

For many years, systems running Nvidia-based GPU architectures have dominated the heterogeneous supercomputer landscape. However, recently GPU chipsets manufactured by Intel and AMD have cut into this market and can now be found in some of the worlds fastest supercomputers. The June 2023 edition of the TOP500 list of supercomputers ranks the Frontier supercomputer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee as the top system in the world. This system features AMD Instinct 250 X GPUs and is currently the only true exascale computer in the world.The first framework that enabled support for heterogeneous platforms across multiple hardware vendors was OpenCL, in 2009. Since then a number of frameworks have been developed to support vendor agnostic heterogeneous environments including OpenMP, OpenCL, Kokkos, and SYCL. SYCL, which combines the concepts of OpenCL with the flexibility of single-source C++, is one of the more promising programming models for heterogeneous computing devices. One key advantage of this framework is that it provides a higher-level programming interface that abstracts away many of the hardware details than the other frameworks. This makes SYCL easier to learn and to maintain across multiple architectures and vendors. In n recent years, there has been growing interest in using heterogeneous computing architectures to accelerate molecular dynamics simulations. Some of the more popular molecular dynamics simulations include Amber, NAMD, and Gromacs. However, to the best of our knowledge, only Gromacs has been successfully ported to SYCL to date. In this paper, we compare the performance of GROMACS compiled using the SYCL and CUDA frameworks for a variety of standard GROMACS benchmarks. In addition, we compare its performance across three different Nvidia GPU chipsets, P100, V100, and A100.

Run 2 Upgrades to the CMS Level-1 Calorimeter Trigger

The CMS Level-1 calorimeter trigger is being upgraded in two stages to maintain performance as the LHC increases pile-up and instantaneous luminosity in its second run. In the first stage, improved algorithms including event-by-event pile-up corrections are used. New algorithms for heavy ion running have also been developed. In the second stage, higher granularity inputs and a time-multiplexed approach allow for improved position and energy resolution. Data processing in both stages of the upgrade is performed with new, Xilinx Virtex-7 based AMC cards.

Nuclear effects in high-p_T production of direct photons and neutral mesons

We present results on the production of direct photons, pizero, and eta mesons on nuclear targets at large transverse momenta (p_T). The data are from 530 and 800 GeV/c proton beams and 515 GeV/c piminus beams incident upon copper and beryllium targets that span the kinematic range of 1.0 < p_T < 10 GeV/c at central rapidities.

Measurement of direct photon production at Tevatron fixed target energies

Measurements of the production of high transverse momentum direct photons by a 515 GeV/c piminus beam and 530 and 800 GeV/c proton beams in interactions with beryllium and hydrogen targets are presented. The data span the kinematic ranges of 3.5 < p_T < 12 GeV/c in transverse momentum and 1.5 units in rapidity. The inclusive direct-photon cross sections are compared with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations and expectations based on a phenomenological parton-k_T model.

Report of the Working Group on Photon and Weak Boson Production

This report discusses physics issues which can be addressed in photon and weak boson production in Run II at the Tevatron. The current understanding and the potential of Run II to expand our knowledge of direct photon production in hadronic collisions is discussed. We explore the prospects for using the W-boson cross section to measure the integrated luminosity, improving the measurement of the W and Z boson transverse momentum distributions, the Z -> b\bar b signal, and the lepton angular distribution in W decays. Finally, we consider the prospects for measuring the trilinear gauge boson couplings in Run II.

Examination of direct-photon and pion production in proton-nucleon collisions

We present a study of inclusive direct-photon and pion production in hadronic interactions, focusing on a comparison of the ratio of gamma/pi0 yields with expectations from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (NLO pQCD). We also examine the impact of a phenomenological model involving k_T smearing (which approximates effects of additional soft-gluon emission) on absolute predictions for photon and pion production and their ratio.

Inclusive production of omega mesons at large transverse momenta in pi-Be interactions at 515 GeV/c

We present results on the production of omega mesons at high transverse momenta in pi^-Be interactions at 515 GeV/c. The data span the kinematic range 3.5 < p_T < 8 GeV/c. We compare the measured cross section with expectations from Monte Carlo QCD generators. The relative yield of omega to pi^0 mesons is used to extract the ratio of vector to pseudoscalar meson production for the first generation of quarks.

kt Effects in Direct-Photon Production

We discuss the phenomenology of initial-state parton-kt broadening in direct-photon production and related processes in hadron collisions. After a brief summary of the theoretical basis for a Gaussian-smearing approach, we present a systematic study of recent results on fixed-target and collider direct-photon production, using complementary data on diphoton and pion production to provide empirical guidance on the required amount of kt broadening. This approach provides a consistent description of the observed pattern of deviation of next-to-leading order QCD calculations relative to the direct-photon data, and accounts for the shape and normalization difference between fixed-order perturbative calculations and the data. We also discuss the uncertainties in this phenomenological approach, the implications of these results on the extraction of the gluon distribution of the nucleon, and the comparison of our findings to recent related work.

Evidence for Parton kT Effects in High pT Particle Production

Inclusive pizero and direct-photon cross sections in the kinematic range 3.5 < pT < 12 GeV/c with central rapidities are presented for 530 and 800 GeV/c proton beams and a 515 GeV/c pi- beam incident on beryllium targets. Current Next-to-Leading-Order perturbative QCD calculations fail to adequately describe the data for conventional choices of scales. Kinematic distributions from these hard scattering events provide evidence that the interacting partons carry significant initial-state parton transverse momentum (kT). Incorporating these kT effects phenomenologically greatly improves the agreement between calculations and the measured cross sections.

Production of charm mesons at high transverse momentum in 515 GeV/c pi- nucleon collisions

We present results on the production of high transverse momentum charm mesons in collisions of 515 GeV/c negative pions with beryllium and copper targets. The experiment recorded a large sample of events containing high transverse momentum showers detected in an electromagnetic calorimeter. From these data, a sample of charm mesons has been reconstructed via their decay into the fully charged K pi pi mode. A measurement of the single inclusive transverse momentum distribution of charged D mesons from 1 to 8 GeV/c is presented. An extrapolation of the measured differential cross section yields an integrated charged D cross section of 11.4+-2.7(stat)+-3.3(syst) microbarns per nucleon for charged D mesons with Feynman x greater than zero. The data are compared with expectations based upon next-to-leading order perturbative QCD, as well as with results from PYTHIA. We also compare our integrated charged D cross section with measurements from other experiments.
