Phase fluctuations in a strongly disordered s-wave superconductor close to the metal-insulator transition

We explore the role of phase fluctuations in a 3-dimensional s-wave superconductor, NbN, as we approach the critical disorder for the destruction of the superconducting state. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal that in the presence of strong disorder, a finite gap in the electronic spectrum continues to persist at temperatures above Tc. With increase in disorder, the superfluid density is strongly suppressed at low temperatures and evolves towards a linear-T variation at higher temperatures. These observations provide strong evidence that phase fluctuation leads to the formation of a pseudogap state in a disordered conventional superconductor.

Phonon switching and combined Fano-Rice effect in optical spectra of bilayer graphene

Recent infrared measurements of phonon peaks in gated bilayer graphene reveal two striking signatures of electron-phonon interaction: an asymmetric Fano lineshape and a giant variation of the peak intensity as a function of the applied gate voltage. In this Letter we provide a unified theoretical framework which accounts for both these effects and unveils the occurrence of a switching mechanism between the symmetric ($E_g$) and anti-symmetric ($E_u$) phonon mode as dominant channel in the optical response. A complete phase diagram of the optical phonon response is also presented, as a function of both the charge density and the bandgap.

Penetration depth and tunneling studies in very thin epitaxial NbN films

We investigate evolution of the magnetic penetration depth and superconducting energy gap in epitaxial NbN films using a low frequency mutual inductance technique and tunneling spectroscopy using a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) for films grown under optimal growth conditions decreases monotonically from 15.87K to 9.16K as the film thickness is decreased from 50nm to 3nm. With decrease in film thickness delta(0) monotonically decreases, whereas lambda(0) monotonically increases. We observe that Tc, lambda(o) and delta(0) are well described by Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory in all films other than the two thinnest ones where we see evidence of the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinski (KTB) transition close to Tc.

Broadening of the Beresinkii-Kosterlitz-Thouless superconducting transition by inhomogeneity and finite-size effects

We discuss the crucial role played by finite-size effects and inhomogeneity on the Beresinkii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in two-dimensional superconductors. In particular, we focus on the temperature dependence of the resistivity, that is dominated by superconducting fluctuations above the BKT transition temperature $T_{BKT}$ and by inhomogeneity below it. By means of a renormalization-group approach we establish a direct correspondence between the parameter values used to describe the BKT fluctuation regime and the distance between $T_{BKT}$ and the mean-field Ginzburg-Landau transition temperature. Below $T_{BKT}$ a resistive tail arises due to finite-size effect and inhomogeneity, that reflects also on the temperature dependence of the superfluid density. We apply our results to recent experimental data in superconducting LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures, and we extract several informations on the microscopic properties of the system from our BKT fitting parameters. Finally, we compare our approach to recent data analysis presented in the literature, where the physical meaning of the parameter values in the BKT formulas has been often overlooked.

Spectroscopic and thermodynamic properties in a four-band model for pnictides

In this paper we provide a comprehesive analysis of different properties of pnictides both in the normal and superconducting state, with a particular focus on the optimally-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ system. We show that, by using the band dispersions experimentally measured by ARPES, a four-band Eliashberg model in the intermediate-coupling regime can account for both the measured hierarchy of the gaps and for several spectroscopic and thermodynamic signatures of low-energy renormalization. These include the kinks in the band dispersion and the effective masses determined via specific-heat and superfluid-density measurements. We also show that, although an intermediate-coupling Eliashberg approach is needed to account for the magnitude of the gaps, the temperature behavior of the thermodynamic quantities does not show in this regime a significant deviation with respect to weak-coupling BCS calculations. This can explain the apparent success of two-band BCS fits of experimental data reported often in the literature.

Gate tunable charged-phonon effect in bilayer graphene

We observe a giant increase of the infrared intensity and a softening of the in-plane antisymmetric phonon mode Eu (~0.2 eV) in bilayer graphene as a function of the gate-induced doping. The phonon peak has a pronounced Fano-like asymmetry. We suggest that the intensity growth and the softening originate from the coupling of the phonon mode to the narrow electronic transition between parallel bands of the same character, while the asymmetry is due to the interaction with the continuum of transitions between the lowest hole and electron bands. The growth of the peak is a manifestation of the "charged-phonon" effect observed previously in organic chain conductors and doped fullerenes, which can now be tuned with the gate voltage.

Fermi surface shrinking and interband coupling in iron-based pnictides

Recent measurements of Fermi surface with de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in LaFePO showed a shrinking of the Fermi pockets with respect to first-principle LDA calculations, suggesting an energy shift of the hole and electrons bands with respect to LDA. We show that these shifts are a natural consequence of the strong particle-hole asymmetry of electronic bands in pnictides, and that they provide an indirect experimental evidence of a dominant interband scattering in these systems.

Theory of fluctuation conductivity from interband pairing in pnictide superconductors

We derive the effective action for superconducting fluctuations in a four-band model for pnictides, discussing the emergence of a single critical mode out of a dominant interband pairing mechanism. We then apply our model to calculate the paraconductivity in two-dimensional and layered three-dimensional systems, and compare our results with recent resistivity measurements in SmFeAsOF

Vertex renormalization in dc conductivity of doped chiral graphene

The remarkable transport properties of graphene follow not only from the the Dirac-like energy dispersion, but also from the chiral nature of its excitations, which makes unclear the limits of applicability of the standard semiclassical Boltzmann approach. In this paper we provide a quantum derivation of the transport scattering time in graphene in the case of electron-phonon interaction. By using the Kubo formalism, we compute explicitly the vertex corrections to the dc conductivity by retaining the full chiral matrix structure of graphene. We show that at least in the regime of large chemical potential the Boltzmann picture is justified, and it is also robust against a small sublattice inequivalence which partly spoils the role of chirality.

Multiple Gaps and Superfluid Density from Interband Pairing in Iron Oxypnictides

We study a four-band model for the iron oxypnictides, in which the superconducting properties are assumed to be determined by the interband coupling between hole-like and electron-like Fermi sheets. We show that reasonable parameters can account for the angle-resolved photoemission spectra showing multiple gaps in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$, and for the temperature dependence of the superfluid density. At the same time, the zero-temperature value of the superfluid density shows a conventional scaling with the number of carriers.

Spectroscopic Signatures of Massless Gap Opening in Graphene

Gap opening in graphene is usually discussed in terms of a semiconducting-like spectrum, where the appearance of a finite gap at the Dirac point is accompanied by a finite mass for the fermions. In this Letter we propose a gap scenario from graphene which preserves the massless characters of the carriers. This approach explains recent spectroscopic measurements carried out in epitaxially-grown graphene, ranging from photoemission to optical transmission.

Doping dependence of the vortex-core energy in bilayer films of cuprates

The energy needed to create a vortex core is the basic ingredient to address the physics of thermal vortex fluctuations in underdoped cuprates. Here we theoretically investigate its role on the occurrence of the Beresinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in a bilayer film with inhomogeneity. From the comparison with recent measurements of the penetration depth in two-unit cell thin films of Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-\d}$ (YBCO) by Hetel et al. [Nat. Phys. 3, 700 (2007)] we can extract the value of the vortex-core energy $μ$, and show that $μ$ scales linearly with $T_c$ at low doping.

Robustness of the optical-conductivity sum rule in Bilayer Graphene

We calculate the optical sum associated with the in-plane conductivity of a graphene bilayer. A bilayer asymmetry gap generated in a field-effect device can split apart valence and conduction bands, which otherwise would meet at two K points in the Brillouin zone. In this way one can go from a compensated semimetal to a semiconductor with a tunable gap. However, the sum rule turns out to be 'protected' against the opening of this semiconducting gap, in contrast to the large variations observed in other systems where the gap is induced by strong correlation effects.

Negative Hopping Magnetoresistance and Dimensional Crossover in Lightly Doped Cuprate Superconductors

We show that, due to the weak ferromagnetism of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, an external magnetic field leads to a dimensional crossover 2D $\to$ 3D for the in-plane transport. The crossover results in an increase of the hole's localization length and hence in a dramatic negative magnetoresistance in the variable range hopping regime. This mechanism quantitatively explains puzzling experimental data on the negative magnetoresistance in the Néel phase of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$.

Sine-Gordon description of Beresinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless physics at finite magnetic field

The Beresinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) physics of vortices in two-dimensional superconductors at finite magnetic field is investigated by means of a field-theoretical approach based on the sine-Gordon model. This description leads to a straightforward definition of the field-induced magnetization and shows that the persistence of non-linear effects at low fields above the transition is a typical signature of the fast divergence of the correlation length within the BKT theory.

Kosterlitz-Thouless behavior in layered superconductors: the role of the vortex-core energy

In layered superconductors with small interlayer Josephson coupling vortex-antivortex phase fluctuations characteristic of quasi two-dimensional (2D) Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) behavior are expected to be observable at some energy scale $T_d$. While in the 2D case $T_d$ is uniquely identified by the KT temperature $T_{KT}$ where the universal value of the superfluid density is reached, we show that in a generic anisotropic 3D system $T_d$ is controlled by the vortex-core energy, and can be significantly larger than the 2D scale $T_{KT}$. These results are discussed in relation to recent experiments in cuprate superconductors, which represent a typical experimental realization of layered anisotropic superconductors.

Impurity susceptibility and the fate of spin-flop transitions in lightly-doped La(2)CuO(4)

We investigate the occurrence of a two-step spin-flop transition and spin reorientation when a longitudinal magnetic field is applied to lightly hole-doped La(2)CuO(4). We find that for large and strongly frustrating impurities, such as Sr in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4), the huge enhancement of the longitudinal susceptibility suppresses the intermediate flop and the reorientation of spins is smooth and continuous. Contrary, for small and weakly frustrating impurities, such as O in La(2)CuO(4+y), a discontinuous spin reorientation (two-step spin-flop transition) takes place. Furthermore, we show that for La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) the field dependence of the magnon gaps differs qualitatively from the La(2)CuO(4) case, a prediction to be verified with Raman spectroscopy or neutron scattering.

Field dependence of the magnetic spectrum in anisotropic and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya antiferromagnets: I. Theory

We consider theoretically the effects of an applied uniform magnetic field on the magnetic spectrum of anisotropic two-dimensional and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya layered quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets. The first case is relevant for systems such as the two-dimensional square lattice antiferromagnet Sr(2)CuO(2)Cl(2), while the later is known to be relevant to the physics of the layered orthorhombic antiferromagnet La(2)CuO(4). We first establish the correspondence betwenn the low-energy spectrum obtained within the anisotropic non-linear sigma model and by means of the spin-wave approximation for a standard easy-axis antiferromagent. Then, we focus on the field-theory approach to calculate the magnetic field dependence of the magnon gaps and spectral intensities for magnetic fields applied along the three possible crystallographic directions. We discuss the various possible ground states and their evolution with temperature for the different field orientations, and the occurrence of spin-flop transitions for fields perpendicular to the layers (transverse fields) as well as for fields along the easy axis (longitudinal fields). Measurements of the one-magnon Raman spectrum in Sr(2)CuO(2)Cl(2) and La(2)CuO(4) and a comparison between the experimental results and the predictions of the present theory will be reported in part II of this research work [L. Benfatto et al., cond-mat/0602664].
