Predicting plasticity in disordered solids from structural indicators

Amorphous solids lack long-range order. Therefore identifying structural defects -- akin to dislocations in crystalline solids -- that carry plastic flow in these systems remains a daunting challenge. By comparing many different structural indicators in computational models of glasses, under a variety of conditions we carefully assess which of these indicators are able to robustly identify the structural defects responsible for plastic flow in amorphous solids. We further demonstrate that the density of defects changes as a function of material preparation and strain in a manner that is highly correlated with the macroscopic material response. Our work represents an important step towards predicting how and when an amorphous solid will fail from its microscopic structure.

The multiple symmetry sustaining phase transitions of spin ice

We present the full phase diagram of the dumbbell model of spin ice as a function of temperature, chemical potential and staggered chemical potential which breaks the translational lattice symmetry in favour of charge crystal ordering. We observe a double winged structure with five possible phases, monopole fluid (spin ice), fragmented single monopole crystal phases and double monopole crystal, the zinc blend structure. Our model provides a skeleton for liquid-liquid phase transitions and for the winged structures observed for itinerant magnets under pressure and external field. We relate our results to recent experiments on Ho$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and propose a wide ranging set of new experiments that exploit the phase diagram, including high pressure protocols, dynamical scaling of Kibble-Zurek form and universal violations of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem.

An efficient scheme for sampling fast dynamics at a low average data acquisition rate

We introduce a temporal scheme for data sampling, based on a variable delay between two successive data acquisitions. The scheme is designed so as to reduce the average data flow rate, while still retaining the information on the data evolution on fast time scales. The practical implementation of the scheme is discussed and demonstrated in light scattering and microscopy experiments that probe the dynamics of colloidal suspensions using CMOS or CCD cameras as detectors.

Bubbles in sheared two-dimensional foams

Oscillatory shear on two-dimensional monodisperse liquid foams was performed. We show that the effect of the oscillatory shear is to cause the migration of bubbles which size is greater than that of a typical bubble of the foam. These so-called flaws move towards the periphery of the foam in a non random motion, thus realizing size segregation in a system which is by construction gravity insensitive. We also show that elongated cavities in the foam could be relaxed towards a more isotropic form with oscillatory shear, and we discuss the pertinent parameters of this relaxation.

Aging Dynamics of the Heisenberg Spin Glass

We numerically study the non-equilibrium dynamics of the three dimensional Heisenberg Edwards-Anderson spin glass following a sudden quench to its low temperature phase. The subsequent aging behavior of the system is analyzed in detail, and the scaling behavior of various space-time correlation functions is investigated for both spin and chiral degrees of freedom. We carefully compare our results with those obtained from simulations of the more studied Ising version of the model, and with experiments on real spin glasses in which the spins have vectorial character. Finally, the present dynamical study offers new perspectives into the possibility of spin-chirality decoupling at low temperature in vectorial spin glasses.

Shear localization in a model glass

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we show that a simple model of a glassy material exhibits the shear localization phenomenon observed in many complex fluids. At low shear rates, the system separates into a fluidized shear-band and an unsheared part. The two bands are characterized by a very different dynamics probed by a local intermediate scattering function. Furthermore, a stick-slip motion is observed at very small shear rates. Our results, which open the possibility of exploring complex rheological behavior using simulations, are compared to recent experiments on various soft glasses.
