Spin dynamics of a Mn atom in a semiconductor quantum dot under resonant optical excitation

We analyze the spin dynamics of an individual magnetic atom (Mn) inserted in a II-VI semiconductor quantum dot under resonant optical excitation. In addition to standard optical pumping expected for a resonant excitation, we show that for particular conditions of laser detuning and excitation intensity, the spin population can be trapped in the state which is resonantly excited. This effect is modeled considering the coherent spin dynamics of the coupled electronic and nuclear spin of the Mn atom optically dressed by a resonant laser field. This spin population trapping mechanism is controlled by the combined effect of the coupling with the laser field and the coherent interaction between the different Mn spin states induced by an anisotropy of the strain in the plane of the quantum dot.

Optical control of the spin state of two Mn atoms in a quantum dot

We report on the optical spectroscopy of the spin of two magnetic atoms (Mn) embedded in an individual quantum dot interacting with either a single electron, a single exciton and single trion. As a result of their interaction to a common entity, the Mn spins become correlated. The dynamics of this process is probed by time resolved spectroscopy, that permits to determine the optical orientation time in the range of a few tens of $ns$. In addition, we show that the energy of the collective spin states of the two Mn atoms can be tuned through the optical Stark effect induced by a resonant laser field.

Electron-nuclei spin dynamics in II-VI semiconductor quantum dots

We report on the dynamics of optically induced nuclear spin polarization in individual CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots loaded with one electron by modulation doping. The fine structure of the hot trion (charged exciton $X^-$ with an electron in the $P$-shell) is identified in photoluminescence excitation spectra. A negative polarisation rate of the photoluminescence, optical pumping of the resident electron and the built-up of dynamic nuclear spin polarisation (DNSP) are observed in time-resolved optical pumping experiments when the quantum dot is excited at higher energy than the hot trion triplet state. The time and magnetic field dependence of the polarisation rate of the $X^-$ emission allows to probe the dynamics of formation of the DNSP in the optical pumping regime. We demonstrate using time-resolved measurements that the creation of a DNSP at B=0T efficiently prevents longitudinal spin relaxation of the electron caused by fluctuations of the nuclear spin bath. The DNSP is built in the microsecond range at high excitation intensity. A relaxation time of the DNSP in about 10 microseconds is observed at $B=0T$ and significantly increases under a magnetic field of a few milli-Tesla. We discuss mechanisms responsible for the fast initialisation and relaxation of the diluted nuclear spins in this system.

Exciton-phonon coupling efficiency in CdSe quantum dots embedded in ZnSe nanowires

Exciton luminescence of a CdSe quantum dot (QD) inserted in a ZnSe nanowire is strongly influenced by the dark exciton states. Because of the small size of these QDs (2-5nm), exchange interaction between hole and electron is highly enhanced and we measured large energy splitting between bright and dark exciton states ($ΔE\in [4, 9.2 ]$ meV) and large spin flip rates between these states. Statistics on many QDs showed that this splitting depends on the QD size. Moreover, we measured an increase of the spin flip rate to the dark states with increasing energy splitting. We explain this observation with a model taking into account the fact that the exciton-phonon interaction depends on the bright to dark exciton energy splitting as well as on the size and shape of the exciton wave function. It also has consequences on the exciton line intensity at high temperature.

Spin-phonon coupling in single Mn doped CdTe quantum dot

The spin dynamics of a single Mn atom in a laser driven CdTe quantum dot is addressed theoretically. Recent experimental results\cite{Le-Gall_PRL_2009,Goryca_PRL_2009,Le-Gall_PRB_2010}show that it is possible to induce Mn spin polarization by means of circularly polarized optical pumping. Pumping is made possible by the faster Mn spin relaxation in the presence of the exciton. Here we discuss different Mn spin relaxation mechanisms. First, Mn-phonon coupling, which is enhanced in the presence of the exciton. Second, phonon-induced hole spin relaxation combined with carrier-Mn spin flip coupling and photon emission results in Mn spin relaxation. We model the Mn spin dynamics under the influence of a pumping laser that injects excitons into the dot, taking into account exciton-Mn exchange and phonon induced spin relaxation of both Mn and holes. Our simulations account for the optically induced Mn spin pumping.

Subnanosecond spectral diffusion of a single quantum dot in a nanowire

We have studied spectral diffusion of the photoluminescence of a single CdSe quantum dot inserted in a ZnSe nanowire. We have measured the characteristic diffusion time as a function of pumping power and temperature using a recently developed technique [G. Sallen et al, Nature Photon. \textbf{4}, 696 (2010)] that offers subnanosecond resolution. These data are consistent with a model where only a \emph{single} carrier wanders around in traps located in the vicinity of the quantum dot.

Optical Stark Effect and Dressed Excitonic States in a Mn-doped Quantum Dot

We report on the observation of spin dependent optically dressed states and optical Stark effect on an individual Mn spin in a semiconductor quantum dot. The vacuum-to-exciton or the exciton-to-biexciton transitions in a Mn-doped quantum dot are optically dressed by a strong laser field and the resulting spectral signature is measured in photoluminescence. We demonstrate that the energy of any spin state of a Mn atom can be independently tuned using the optical Stark effect induced by a control laser. High resolution spectroscopy reveals a power, polarization and detuning dependent Autler-Townes splitting of each optical transition of the Mn-doped quantum dot. This experiment demonstrates a complete optical resonant control of the exciton-Mn system.

Optical initialization, readout and dynamics of a Mn spin in a quantum dot

We have investigated the spin preparation efficiency by optical pumping of individual Mn atoms embedded in CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots. Monitoring the time dependence of the intensity of the fluorescence during the resonant optical pumping process in individual quantum dots allows to directly probe the dynamics of the initialization of the Mn spin. This technique presents the convenience of including preparation and read-out of the Mn spin in the same step. Our measurements demonstrate that Mn spin initialization, at zero magnetic field, can reach an efficiency of 75% and occurs in the tens of \emph{ns} range when a laser resonantly drives at saturation one of the quantum dot transition. We observe that the efficiency of optical pumping changes from dot to dot and is affected by a magnetic field of a few tens of mT applied in Voigt or Faraday configuration. This is attributed to the local strain distribution at the Mn location which predominantly determines the dynamics of the Mn spin under weak magnetic field. The spectral distribution of the spin-flip scattered photons from quantum dots presenting a weak optical pumping efficiency reveals a significant spin relaxation for the exciton split in the exchange field of the Mn spin.

Optical spin orientation of a single manganese atom in a quantum dot

A hight degree of spin polarization is achieved for a Mn atom localized in a semiconductor quantum dot using quasi-resonant optical excitation at zero magnetic field. Optically created spin polarized carriers generate an energy splitting of the Mn spin and enable magnetic moment orientation controlled by the photon helicity and energy. The dynamics and the magnetic field dependence of the optical pumping mechanism shows that the spin lifetime of an isolated Mn atom at zero magnetic field is controlled by a magnetic anisotropy induced by the built-in strain in the quantum dots.

Optical probing of spin fluctuations of a single magnetic atom

We analyzed the photoluminescence intermittency generated by a single paramagnetic spin localized in an individual semiconductor quantum dot. The statistics of the photons emitted by the quantum dot reflect the quantum fluctuations of the localized spin interacting with the injected carriers. Photon correlation measurements which are reported here reveal unique signatures of these fluctuations. A phenomenological model is proposed to quantitatively describe these observations, allowing a measurement of the spin dynamics of an individual magnetic atom at zero magnetic field. These results demonstrate the existence of an efficient spin relaxation channel arising from a spin-exchange with individual carriers surrounding the quantum dot. A theoretical description of a spin-flip mechanism involving spin exchange with surrounding carriers gives relaxation times in good agreement with the measured dynamics.

Fine structure of exciton excited levels in a quantum dot with a magnetic ion

The fine structure of excited excitonic states in a quantum dot with an embedded magnetic ion is studied theoretically and experimentally. The developed theory takes into account the Coulomb interaction between charged carriers, the anisotropic long-range electron-hole exchange interaction in the zero-dimensional exciton, and the exchange interaction of the electron and the hole with the $d$-electrons of a Mn ion inserted inside the dot. Depending on the relation between the quantum dot anisotropy and the exciton-Mn coupling the photoluminescence excitation spectrum has a qualitatively different behavior. It provides a deep insight into the spin structure of the excited excitonic states.

Geometrical effects on the optical properties of quantum dots doped with a single magnetic atom

The emission spectra of individual self-assembled quantum dots containing a single magnetic Mn atom differ strongly from dot to dot. The differences are explained by the influence of the system geometry, specifically the in-plane asymmetry of the quantum dot and the position of the Mn atom. Depending on both these parameters, one has different characteristic emission features which either reveal or hide the spin state of the magnetic atom. The observed behavior in both zero field and under magnetic field can be explained quantitatively by the interplay between the exciton-manganese exchange interaction (dependent on the Mn position) and the anisotropic part of the electron-hole exchange interaction (related to the asymmetry of the quantum dot).

Tunable Resonant Optical MicroCavities by Self-Assembled Templating

Micron-scale optical cavities are produced using a combination of template sphere self-assembly and electrochemical growth. Transmission measurements of the tunable microcavities show sharp resonant modes with a Q-factor>300, and 25-fold local enhancement of light intensity. The presence of transverse optical modes confirms the lateral confinement of photons. Calculations show sub-micron mode volumes are feasible. The small mode volume of these microcavities promises to lead to a wide range of applications in microlasers, atom optics, quantum information, biophotonics and single molecule detection.
