Slow two-level systems in point contacts

A great variety of experiments, like heat release measurements, acoustic measurements, and transport measurements on mesoscopic samples have proved that two level systems (TLSs) have a crucial role in the low temperature thermal and electric properties of disordered systems. This paper is aimed at reviewing the role of slow TLSs in point contacts. First the theory of point contacts is summarized, concentrating on the discussion of different point contact models, and on the different regimes of electron flow in the contact, mainly focusing on the ballistic and diffusive limit. The Boltzmann equation is solved in both regimes, and the position dependence of the electrical potential is determined. Then the scattering processes in point contacts are investigated, particularly concentrating on the scattering on slow TLSs. If the the electron assisted transitions between the two states are negligible the electron-two level system interaction can be treated with a simplified Hamiltonian. The scattering on such slow TLSs causes nonlinearity in the current-voltage characteristics of the point contact, which can be determined using Fermi's golden role. These calculations are presented showing both the contribution of elastic and inelastic scattering, and including the dependence on the position of the TLS, and on the effect of high frequency irradiation. These results are used to discuss the differences between these slow TLSs and the fast centers which may be described by the two channel Kondo model. The available experimental results are analyzed, distinguishing between the effects due to the different types of TLSs.

Gate-controlled spin-splitting in quantum dots with ferromagnetic leads in the Kondo regime

The effect of a gate voltage ($V_g$) on the spin-splitting of an electronic level in a quantum dot (QD) attached to ferromagnetic leads is studied in the Kondo regime using a generalized numerical renormalization group technique. We find that the $V_g$-dependence of the QD level spin-splitting strongly depends on the shape of the density of states (DOS). For one class of DOS shapes there is nearly no $V_g$-dependence, for another, $V_g$ can be used to control the magnitude and sign of the spin-splitting, which can be interpreted as a local exchange magnetic field. We find that the spin-splitting acquires a new type of logarithmic divergence. We give an analytical explanation for our numerical results and explain how they arise due to spin-dependent charge fluctuations.

Assisted hopping and interaction effects in impurity models

We study, using Numerical Renormalization Group methods, the generalization of the Anderson impurity model where the hopping depends on the filling of the impurity. We show that the model, for sufficiently large values of the assisted hopping term, shows a regime where local pairing correlations are enhanced. These correlations involve pairs fluctuating between on site and nearest neighbor positions.

Regular and Singular Fermi Liquid fixed points in quantum impurity models

We show that thermodynamics is insufficient to probe the nature of the low energy dynamics of quantum impurity models and a more subtle analysis based on scattering theory is required. Traditionally, quantum impurity models are classified into one of two categories: Fermi liquids and non-Fermi liquids, depending on the analytic properties of the various thermodynamic quntities. We show, however, that even when a quantum impurity model is a Fermi liquid (an incoming electron at the Fermi level scatters elastically off the impurity), one may find singular thermodynamic behavior if characteristics of quasiparticles are not analytic near the Fermi surface. Prompted by this observation, we divide Fermi liquids into two categories: regular Fermi liquids and singular Fermi Liquids. The difference between regular Fermi liquids, singular Fermi liquids, and non-Fermi liquids fixed points is explained using properties of the many-body S-matrix for impurity quasiparticle scattering. Using the Bethe-Ansatz and numerical RG, we show that whereas the ordinary Kondo Model is a regular Fermi liquid the underscreened Kondo model is a a singular Fermi liquid. This results in a breakdown of Nozieres' Fermi liquid picture for the underscreened and explains the singular thermodynamic behavior noticed in Bethe Ansatz and large-N calculations. Furthermore, we show that conventional regular Fermi liquid behavior is re-established in an external magnetic field H, but with a density of states which diverges as 1/H. Possible connections with the field-tuned quantum criticality recently observed in heavy electron materials are also discussed.

Theory of inelastic scattering from magnetic impurities

We use the numerical renormalization group method tocalculate the single particle matrix elements $\cal T$ of the many body $T$-matrix of the conduction electrons scattered by a magnetic impurity at T=0 temperature. Since $\cal T$ determines both the total and the elastic, spin-diagonal scattering cross sections, we are able to compute the full energy-, spin- and magnetic field dependence of the inelastic scattering cross section, $σ_{\rm inel}(ω)$. We find an almost linear frequency dependence of $σ_{\rm inel}(ω)$ below the Kondo temperature, $T_K$, which crosses over to a $\sim ω^2$ behavior only at extremely low energies. Our method can be generalized to other quantum impurity models.

Quantum phase transition in a two-channel-Kondo quantum dot device

We develop a theory of electron transport in a double quantum dot device recently proposed for the observation of the two-channel Kondo effect. Our theory provides a strategy for tuning the device to the non-Fermi-liquid fixed point, which is a quantum critical point in the space of device parameters. We explore the corresponding quantum phase transition, and make explicit predictions for behavior of the differential conductance in the vicinity of the quantum critical point.

NRG study of the Kondo effect in the presence of itinerant-electron ferromagnetism

The Kondo effect in quantum dots (QDs) - artificial magnetic impurities - attached to ferromagnetic leads is studied with the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. It is shown that the QD level is spin-split due to presence of ferromagnetic electrodes, leading to a suppression of the Kondo effect. We find that the Kondo effect can be restored by compensating this splitting with a magnetic field. Although the resulting Kondo resonance then has an unusual spin asymmetry with a reduced Kondo temperature, the ground state is still a locally-screened state, describable by Fermi liquid theory and a generalized Friedel sum rule, and transport in the unitary limit is not spin dependent.

Quantum Magnetic Impurities in Magnetically Ordered Systems

We discuss the problem of a spin 1/2 impurity immersed in a spin S magnetically ordered background. We show that the problem maps onto a generalization of the dissipative two level system (DTLS) with two independent heat baths, associated with the Goldstone modes of the magnet, that couple to different components of the impurity spin operator. Using analytical perturbative renormalization group (RG) methods and accurate numerical renormalization group (NRG) we show that contrary to other dissipative models there is quantum frustration of decoherence and quasi-scaling even in the strong coupling regime. We make predictions for the behavior of the impurity magnetic susceptibility that can be measured in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. Our results may also have relevance to quantum computation.

Orbital Kondo behavior from dynamical structural defects

The interaction between an atom moving in a model double-well potential and the conduction electrons is treated using renormalization group methods in next-to-leading logarithmic order. A large number of excited states is taken into account and the Kondo temperature $T_K$ is computed as a function of barrier parameters. We find that for special parameters $T_K$ can be close to $1 {\rm K}$ and it can be of the same order of magnitude as the renormalized splitting $Δ$. However, in the perturbative regime we always find that $T_K \alt Δ$ with a $T_K \alt 1 {\rm K}$ [Aleiner {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 2629 (2001)]. We also find that $Δ$ remains unrenormalized at energies above the Debye frequency, $ω_{\rm Debye}$.

SU(4) Fermi Liquid State and Spin Filtering in a Double Quantum Dot System

We study a symmetrical double quantum dot (DD) system with strong capacitive inter-dot coupling using renormalization group methods. The dots are attached to separate leads, and there can be a weak tunneling between them. In the regime where there is a single electron on the DD the low-energy behavior is characterized by an SU(4)-symmetric Fermi liquid theory with entangled spin and charge Kondo correlations and a phase shift $π/4$. Application of an external magnetic field gives rise to a large magneto-conductance and a crossover to a purely charge Kondo state in the charge sector with SU(2) symmetry. In a four lead setup we find perfectly spin polarized transmission.

Dynamics of a tunneling magnetic impurity: Kondo effect induced incoherence

We study how the formation of the Kondo compensation cloud influences the dynamical properties of a magnetic impurity that tunnels between two positions in a metal. The Kondo effect dynamically generates a strong tunneling impurity-conduction electron coupling, changes the temperature dependence of the tunneling rate, and may ultimately result in the destruction of the coherent motion of the particle at zero temperature. We find an interesting two-channel Kondo fixed point as well for a vanishing overlap between the electronic states that screen the magnetic impurity. We propose a number of systems where the predicted features could be observed.

Theory of magnetoresistance in films of dilute magnetic alloys

Earlier a magnetic anisotropy for magnetic impurities nearby the surface of non-magnetic host was proposed in order to explain the size dependence of the Kondo effect in dilute magnetic alloys. Recently Giordano has measured the magnetoresistance of dilute Au(Fe) films for different thicknesses well above the Kondo temperature $T_K$. In this way he verified the existence of that anisotropy even for such a case where the Kondo effect is not dominating. For detailed comparison of that suggestion with experiments, the magnetic field dependence of the magnetoresistance is calculated in the lowest approximation, thus in the second order of the exchange coupling. The strength of the anisotropy is very close to earlier estimates deduced from the size dependence of the Kondo resistivity amplitude.
