Mass Spectrum and Statistical Entropy of the BTZ black hole from Canonical Quantum Gravity

In a recent publication we developed a canonical quantization program describing the gravitational collapse of a spherical dust cloud in 2+1 dimensions with a negative cosmological constant $-Λ\equiv -l^{-2}<0$. In this paper we address the quantization of the Banados--Teitelboim--Zanelli (BTZ) black hole. We show that the mass function describing the black hole is made of two pieces, a constant non-vanishing boundary contribution and a discrete spectrum of the form $μ_n = \frac{\hbar}{l}(n+ \frac 12)$. The discrete spectrum is obtained by applying the Wheeler--DeWitt equation with a particular choice of factor ordering and interpreted as giving the energy levels of the collapsed matter shells that form the black hole. Treating a black hole microstate as a particular distribution of shells among the levels, we determine the canonical entropy of the BTZ black hole. Comparison with the Bekenstein--Hawking entropy shows that the boundary energy is related to the central charge of the Virasoro algebra that generates the asymptotic symmetry group of the three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space AdS$_3$. This gives a connection between the Wheeler--DeWitt approach and the conformal field theory approach.

Field theoretic description of the abelian and non-abelian Josephson effect

We formulate the Josephson effect in a field theoretic language which affords a straightforward generalization to the non-abelian case. Our formalism interprets Josephson tunneling as the excitation of pseudo-Goldstone bosons. We demonstrate the formalism through the consideration of a single junction separating two regions with a purely non-abelian order parameter and a sandwich of three regions where the central region is in a distinct phase. Applications to various non-abelian symmetry breaking systems in particle and condensed matter physics are given.

Thermodynamics of static black objects in D dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with D-4 compact dimensions

We investigate the thermodynamics of static black objects such as black holes, black strings and their generalizations to D dimensions (`black branes') in a gravitational theory containing the four dimensional Gauss-Bonnet term in the action, when D-4 of the dimensions are compactified on a torus. The entropies of black holes and black branes are compared to obtain information on the stability of these objects and to find their phase diagrams. We demonstrate the existence of a critical mass, which depends on the scale of the compactified dimensions, below which the black hole entropy dominates over the entropy of the black membrane.

Analytic approximation to 5 dimensional Black Holes with one compact dimension

We study black hole solutions in $R^4\times S^1$ space, using an expansion to fourth order in the ratio of the radius of the horizon, $μ$, and the circumference of the compact dimension, $L$. A study of geometric and thermodynamic properties indicates that the black hole fills the space in the compact dimension at $ε(μ/L)^2\simeq0.1$. At the same value of $ε$ the entropies of the uniform black string and of the black hole are approximately equal.

Small Black Holes on Branes: Is the horizon regular or singular ?

We investigate the following question: Consider a small mass, with $ε$ (the ratio of the Schwarzschild radius and the bulk curvature length) much smaller than 1, that is confined to the TeV brane in the Randall-Sundrum I scenario. Does it form a black hole with a regular horizon, or a naked singularity? The metric is expanded in $ε$ and the asymptotic form of the metric is given by the weak field approximation (linear in the mass). In first order of $ε$ we show that the iteration of the weak field solution, which includes only integer powers of the mass, leads to a solution that has a singular horizon. We find a solution with a regular horizon but its asymptotic expansion in the mass also contains half integer powers.

The NuTeV Anomaly, Lepton Universality, and Non-Universal Neutrino-Gauge Couplings

In previous studies we found that models with flavor-universal suppression of the neutrino-gauge couplings are compatible with NuTeV and Z-pole data. In this paper we expand our analysis to obtain constraints on flavor-dependent coupling suppression by including lepton universality data from W, tau, pi and K decays in fits to model parameters. We find that the data are consistent with a variety of patterns of coupling suppression. In particular, in scenarios in which the suppression arises from the mixing of light neutrinos with heavy gauge singlet states (neutrissimos), we find patterns of flavor-dependent coupling suppression which are also consistent with constraints from mu -> e gamma.

Phase Structure of Non-Compact QED3 and the Abelian Higgs Model

We review the phase structure of a three-dimensional, non-compact Abelian gauge theory (QED3) as a function of the number $N$ of 4-component massless fermions. There is a critical $N_{c}$ up to which there is dynamical fermion mass generation and an associated global symmetry breaking. We discuss various approaches to the determination of $N_c$, which lead to estimates ranging from $N_c =1$ to $N_c =4$. This theory with N=2 has been employed as an effective continuum theory for the 2D quantum antiferromagnet where the observed Neel ordering corresponds to dynamical fermion mass generation. Thus the value of $N_c$ is of some physical interest. We also consider the phase structure of the model with a finite gauge boson mass (the Abelian Higgs model).

Small Black Holes in Randall-Sundrum type I Scenario

An approximation method to study the properties of a small black hole located on the TeV brane in the Randall-Sundrum type I scenario is presented. The method enables us to find the form of the metric close to the matter distribution when its asymptotic form is given. The short range solution is found as an expansion in the ratio between the Schwarzschild radius of the black hole and the curvature length of the bulk. Long range properties are introduced using the linearized gravity solution as an asymptotic boundary condition. The solution is found up to first order. It is valid in the region close to the horizon but is not valid on the horizon. The regularity of the horizon is still under study.

A scalar invariant and the local geometry of a class of static spacetimes

The scalar invariant, I, constructed from the "square" of the first covariant derivative of the curvature tensor is used to probe the local geometry of static spacetimes which are also Einstein spaces. We obtain an explicit form of this invariant, exploiting the local warp-product structure of a 4-dimensional static spacetime, $~^{(3)}Σ\times_{f} \reals$, where $^{(3)}Σ$ is the Riemannian hypersurface orthogonal to a timelike Killing vector field with norm given by a positive function, $f$ on $^{(3)}Σ$. For a static spacetime which is an Einstein space, it is shown that the locally measurable scalar, I, contains a term which vanishes if and only if $^{(3)}Σ$ is conformally flat; also, the vanishing of this term implies (a) $~^{(3)}Σ$ is locally foliated by level surfaces of $f$, $^{(2)}S$, which are totally umbilic spaces of constant curvature, and (b) $^{(3)}Σ$ is locally a warp-product space. Futhermore, if $^{(3)}Σ$ is conformally flat it follows that every non-trivial static solution of the vacuum Einstein equation with a cosmological constant, is either Nariai-type or Kottler-type - the classes of spacetimes relevant to quantum aspects of gravity.

Quark-Lepton Unification and Lepton Flavor Non-Conservation from a TeV-scale Seesaw Neutrino Mass Texture

In a recent paper, we pointed out that mixing of the light neutrinos with heavy gauge singlet states could reconcile the Z-pole data from e+e- colliders and the nu_mu (anti-nu_mu) scattering data from the NuTeV experiment at Fermilab. We further noted that the mixing angle required to fit the data is much larger than what would be expected from the conventional seesaw mechanism. In this paper, we show how such mixings can be arranged by a judicious choice of the neutrino mass texture. We also argue that by invoking the unification of the Dirac mass matrix for the up-type quarks and the neutrinos, the mass of the heavy states can naturally be expected to be in the few TeV range. The model is strongly constrained by the lepton flavor changing process mu -> e gamma which requires lepton universality to be violated in the charged channel.

The W mass and the U parameter

The Z-pole data from e+e- colliders and results from the NuTeV experiment at Fermilab can be brought into agreement if (1) the neutrino-Z couplings were suppressed relative to the Standard Model (SM), and (2) the Higgs boson were much heavier than suggested by SM global fits. However, increasing the Higgs boson mass will move the theoretical value of the W mass away from its experimental value. A large and positive U parameter becomes necessary to account for the difference. We discuss what type of new physics may lead to such values of U.

The NuTeV Anomaly, Neutrino Mixing, and a Heavy Higgs Boson

Recent results from the NuTeV experiment at Fermilab and the deviation of the Z invisible width, measured at LEP/SLC, from its Standard Model (SM) prediction suggest the suppression of neutrino-Z couplings. Such suppressions occur naturally in models which mix the neutrinos with heavy gauge singlet states. We postulate a universal suppression of the Z-nu-nu couplings by a factor of (1-epsilon) and perform a fit to the Z-pole and NuTeV observables with epsilon and the oblique correction parameters S and T. Compared to a fit with S and T only, inclusion of epsilon leads to a dramatic improvement in the quality of the fit. The values of S and T preferred by the fit can be obtained within the SM by a simple increase in the Higgs boson mass. However, if the W mass is also included in the fit, a non-zero U parameter becomes necessary which cannot be supplied within the SM. The preferred value of epsilon suggests that the seesaw mechanism may not be the reason why neutrinos are so light.

Black Holes in brane worlds

In a Randall-Sundrum theory (RS1) 3+1 dimensional black holes and higher dimensional black holes are not the natural continuations of each other. 3+1 dimensional black holes decay into a large number of 4+1 dimensional black holes at a critical mass, $M_{\rm crit}\sim 10^{32}$ TeV. Those black holes themselves may become unstable above another, albeit much smaller critical mass, $M_0\sim 10^3$TeV.

Diquark composites in the color superconducting phase of two flavor dense QCD

We study the Bethe-Salpeter equations for spin zero diquark composites in the color superconducting phase of N_f=2 cold dense QCD. The explicit form of the spectrum of the diquarks, containing an infinite tower of narrow (at high density) resonances, is derived. It is argued that there are five pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons (pseudoscalars) that remain almost massless at large chemical potential. These five pseudoscalars, along with the massless quarks of the third color should play an important role in the infrared dynamics of N_f=2 dense QCD.

Masses of the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons in two flavor color superconducting phase

The masses of the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons in the color superconducting phase of dense QCD with two light flavors are estimated by making use of the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action. Parametrically, the masses of the doublet and antidoublet bosons are suppressed by a power of the coupling constant as compared to the value of the superconducting gap. This is qualitatively different from the mass expression for the singlet pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson, resulting from non-perturbative effects. It is argued that the (anti-) doublet pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons form colorless [with respect to the unbroken SU(2)_{c}] charmonium-like bound states. The corresponding binding energy is also estimated.

Color superconductivity and nondecoupling phenomena in 2+1 dimensional QCD

The possibility of generating a color superconducting state in 2+1 dimensional QCD is analyzed. The gap equation in the leading, hard-dense loop improved, one-gluon exchange approximation is derived and solved. The magnitude of the order parameter is proportional to a power of the coupling constant. For an asymptotically large chemical potential, a qualitatevely new (with respect to the 3+1 dimensional case) phenomenon of nondecoupling of the fermion pairing dynamics from the infrared one is revealed and discussed.

Bethe-Salpeter equation for diquarks in color-flavor locked phase of cold dense QCD

The Bethe-Salpeter equations for diquarks with the quantum numbers of the Nambu-Goldstone bosons are analyzed in the color-flavor locked phase of cold dense QCD with three quark flavors. The decay constants and the velocities of the Nambu-Goldstone bosons are calculated in the Pagels-Stokar approximation. It is also shown that, in contrast to the case of dense QCD with two flavors, there are no massive radial excitations with quantum numbers of the Nambu-Goldstone bosons in the color-flavor locked phase. The role of the Meissner effect in the pairing dynamics of diquarks is explained.

Diquarks in cold dense QCD with two flavors

We derive and analyze the Bethe-Salpeter equations for spin zero diquarks in the color superconducting phase of cold dense QCD with two massless flavors. The spectrum of diquarks contains an infinite number of massive excitations and five (nearly) massless pseudoscalars. The former are singlets while the latter include a doublet, an antidoublet and a singlet with respect to the unbroken $SU(2)_{c}$. Because of an approximate parity doubling at large chemical potential, all massive states come in pairs. The decay constants, as well as the velocities of the (nearly) massless pseudoscalars are derived. The different role of the Meissner effect for tightly bound states and quasiclassical bound states is revealed.
