Interim report for the International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC)

The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". In the past, the U.S. Muon Accelerator Programme (MAP) [5] has been instrumental in studies of concepts and technologies for a muon collider.

The Flexible Plasma Trap (FPT) for the production of overdense plasmas

Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources are currently the most efficient ion sources among those used in facilities dedicated to nuclear physics. The need for a more flexible magnetic field and RF injection system suggested to design and develop a different type of plasma trap, named Flexible Plasma Trap (FPT). The magnetic field of FPT is generated by means of three coils while microwaves in the range 4-7 GHz can be injected by three different inputs, one placed along the axis and two placed radially. FPT can work in different plasma heating schemes so it will be an ideal tool for studies of plasma and multidisciplinary physics. Moreover, a microwave launcher has been designed and installed to the FPT for launching microwaves with a variable tilt angle with respect to the magnetic field. This paper describes the characteristics of the FPT along with the preliminary results of plasma diagnostics.

Numerical and Experimental Characterization of RF Waves Propagation in Ion Sources Magnetoplasmas

This paper describes three-dimensional numerical simulations and Radio Frequency (RF) measurements of wave propagation in microwave-heated magnetized plasmas of ion sources. Full-wave solution of Maxwell's equations has been addressed through the Finite Element Method (FEM) commercial software COMSOL. Our numerical model takes into account the strongly inhomogeneous and anisotropic magnetized "cold" plasma medium. The simulations reproduce the main features of the wave-plasma interaction of the Flexible Plasma Trap (FPT) that recently came into operations at INFN-LNS. A two-pins RF probe has been ad-hoc developed and used as a plasmaimmersed antenna for measuring local wave electric fields in the FPT device. The measurements of plasma electron density and RF electric field, performed for different external magnetic field configuration, allowed a direct comparison with the assumed simulation model.

IsoDAR@KamLAND: A Conceptual Design Report for the Technical Facility

This conceptual design report describes the technical facility for the IsoDAR electron-antineutrino source at KamLAND. The IsoDAR source will allow an impressive program of neutrino oscillation and electroweak physics to be performed at KamLAND. This report provides information on the physics case, the conceptual design for the subsystems, alternative designs considered, specifics of installation at KamLAND, and identified needs for future development. We discuss the risks we have identified and our approach to mitigating those risks with this design. A substantial portion of the conceptual design is based on three years of experimental efforts and on industry experience. This report also includes information on the conventional facilities.

Microwave Discharge Ion Sources

This chapter describes the basic principles, design features and characteristics of microwave discharge ion sources. A suitable source for the production of intense beams for high-power accelerators must satisfy the requirements of high brightness, stability and reliability. The 2.45 GHz off-resonance microwave discharge sources are ideal devices to generate the required beams, as they produce multimilliampere beams of protons, deuterons and singly charged ions. A description of different technical designs will be given, analysing their performance, with particular attention being paid to the quality of the beam, especially in terms of its emittance.

Microwave Coupling to ECR and Alternative Heating Methods

The Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) is nowadays the most effective device that can feed particle accelerators in a continuous and reliable way, providing high-current beams of low- and medium-charge-state ions and relatively intense currents for highly charged ions. The ECRIS is an important tool for research with ion beams (in surface, atomic, and nuclear science) while, on the other hand, it implies plasma under extreme conditions and thus constitutes an object of scientific interest in itself. The fundamental aspect of the coupling between the electromagnetic wave and the plasma is hereinafter treated together with some variations to the classical ECR heating mechanism, with particular attention being paid to the frequency tuning effect and two-frequency heating. Considerations of electron and ion dynamics will be presented together with some recent observations connecting the beam shape with the frequency of the electromagnetic wave feeding the cavity. The future challenges of higher-charge states, high-charge breeding efficiency, and high absolute ionization efficiency also call for the exploration of new heating schemes and synergy between experiments and modelling. Some results concerning the investigation of innovative mechanisms of plasma ignition based on upper hybrid resonance will be described.

Whitepaper on the DAEdALUS Program

This whitepaper describes the status of the DAEdALUS program for development of high power cyclotrons as of the time of the final meeting of the Division of Particles and Fields 2013 Community Study ("Snowmass"). We report several new results, including a measurement capability between 4 and 12 degrees on the CP violating parameter in the neutrino sector. Past results, including the capability of the IsoDAR high Dm^2 antielectron neutrino disappearance search, are reviewed. A discussion of the R&D successes, including construction of a beamline teststand, and future plans are provided. This text incorporates short whitepapers written for subgroups in the Intensity Frontier and Frontier Capabilities Working Groups that are available on the Snowmass website.

Multimegawatt DAE$δ$ALUS Cyclotrons for Neutrino Physics

DAE$δ$ALUS (Decay-At-rest Experiment for $δ_{CP}$ studies At the Laboratory for Underground Science) provides a new approach to the search for CP violation in the neutrino sector. High-power continuous-wave proton cyclotrons efficiently provide the necessary proton beams with an energy of up to 800 MeV to create neutrinos from pion and muon decay-at-rest. The experiment searches for $\barν_μ \rightarrow \barν_e$ at short baselines corresponding to the atmospheric $Δm^2$ region. The $\barν_e$ will be detected via inverse beta decay. Thus, the cyclotrons will be employed at a future ultra-large gadolinium-doped water or scintillator detector. In this paper we address the most challenging questions regarding a cyclotron-based high-power proton driver in the megawatt range with a kinetic energy of 800 MeV. Aspects of important subsystems like the ion source and injection chain, the magnet design and radio frequency system will be addressed. Precise beam dynamics simulations, including space charge and the $\text{H}_2^+$ stripping process, are the base for the characterization and quantification of the beam halo -- one of the most limiting processes in high-power particle accelerators.

Preliminary Design Study of High-Power H2+ Cyclotrons for the DAEdALUS Experiment

This report provides a first design for H2+ accelerators as the DAEdALUS neutrino sources. A description of all aspects of the system, from the ion source to the extracted beam, is provided. The analysis provides a first proof of principle of a full cyclotron system which can provide the necessary beam power for the CP violation search proposed by the DAEdALUS Collaboration.
