Zitterbewegung and symmetry switching in Klein's four-group

Zitterbewegung is the exotic phenomenon associated either with the relativistic electron-positron rapid oscillation or to the electron-hole transitions in the narrow gap semiconductors. In the present work, we enlarge concept of Zitterbewegung and show that the trembling motion may occur due to the dramatic changes in the symmetry of the system. In particular, we exploit a paradigmatic model of quantum chaos, quantum mathematical pendulum (universal Hamiltonian). The symmetry group of this system is the Klein's four-group that possess three invariant subgroups. The energy spectrum of the system parametrically depends on the height of the potential barrier, and contains degenerate and non-degenerate areas, corresponding to the different symmetry subgroups. Change in the height of the potential barrier switches the symmetry subgroup and leads to the trembling motion. We analyzed mean square fluctuations of the velocity operator and observed that trembling enhances for the highly excited states. We observed the link between the phenomena of trembling motion and uncertainty relations of noncommutative operators of the system.

Many-body localization phase in a spin-driven chiral multiferroic chain

Many-body localization (MBL) is an emergent phase in correlated quantum systems with promis- ing applications, particularly in quantum information. Here, we unveil the existence and analyse this phase in a chiral multiferroic model system. Conventionally, MBL occurrence is traced via level statistics by implementing a standard finite-size scaling procedure. Here, we present an approach based on the full distribution of the ratio of adjacent energy spacings. We find a strong broadening of the histograms of counts of these level spacings directly at the transition point from MBL to the ergodic phase. The broadening signals reliably the transition point without relying on an averaging procedure. The fast convergence of the histograms even for relatively small systems allows moni- toring the MBL dynamics with much less computational effort. Numerical results are presented for a chiral spin chain with a dynamical Dzyaloshinskii Moriya (DM) interaction, an established model to describe the spin excitations in a single phase spin-driven multiferroic system. The multiferroic MBL phase is uncovered and it is shown how to steer it via electric fields.

Qubit(s) transfer in helical spin chains

Qubit(s) transfer through a helical chain is studied. We consider the transfer of a single state and Bell states across a multiferroic spin chain and the possibility of an electric field control of the fidelity of the single state and the Bell pairs. We analyze pure and imperfect multiferroic spin chains. A scheme for an efficient transfer of spin states through a multiferroic channel relies on kicking by appropriate electric field pulses at regular interval. This electric field pulse sequence undermines the effect of impurity on the fidelity and improves the state transfer through the helical chain.

Entanglement dynamics of two nitrogen vacancy centers coupled by a nanomechanical resonator

In this paper we study the time evolution of the entanglement between two remote NV Centers (nitrogen vacancy in diamond) connected by a dual-mode nanomechanical resonator with magnetic tips on both sides. Calculating the negativity as a measure for the entanglement, we find that the entanglement between two spins oscillates with time and can be manipulated by varying the parameters of the system. We observed the phe- nomenon of a sudden death and the periodic revivals of entanglement in time. For the study of quantum deco- herence, we implement a Lindblad master equation. In spite of its complexity, the model is analytically solvable under fairly reasonable assumptions, and shows that the decoherence influences the entanglement, the sudden death, and the revivals in time.

Conversion of electronic to magnonic spin current at heavy-metal magnetic-insulator interface

Electronic spin current is convertible to magnonic spin current via the creation or annihilation of thermal magnons at the interface of a magnetic insulator and a metal with a strong spin-orbital coupling. So far this phenomenon was evidenced in the linear regime. Based on analytical and fulledged numerical results for the non-linear regime we demonstrate that the generated thermal magnons or magnonic spin current in the insulator is asymmetric with respect to the charge current direction in the metal and exhibits a nonlinear dependence on the charge current density, which is explained by the tuning effect of the spin Hall torque and the magnetization damping. The results are also discussed in light of and are in line with recent experiments pointing to a new way of non-linear manipulation of spin with electrical means.

Electrically driven magnetic antenna based on multiferroic composites

We suggest and demonstrate via large scale numerical simulations an electrically operated spin- wave inducer based on composite multiferroic junctions. Specifcally, we consider an interfacially coupled ferromagnetic/ferroelectric structure that emits controllably spin waves in the ferromagnets if the ferroelectric polarization is poled by an external electric field. The roles of geometry and material properties are discussed.

Topological insulator in a helicoidal magnetization field

A key feature of topological insulators is the robustness of the electron energy spectrum. At a surface of a topological insulator, Dirac point is protected by the characteristic symmetry of the system. The breaking of the symmetry opens a gap in the energy spectrum. Therefore, topological insulators are very sensitive to magnetic fields, which can open a gap in the electronic spectrum. Concerning "internal" magnetic effects, for example the situation with doped magnetic impurities, is not trivial. A single magnetic impurity is not enough to open the band gap, while in the case of a ferromagnetic chain of deposited magnetic impurities the Dirac point is lifted. However, a much more interesting case is when localized magnetic impurities form a chiral spin order. Our first principle density functional theory calculations have shown that this is the case for Fe deposited on the surface of Bi2Se3 topological insulator. But not only magnetic impurities can form a chiral helicoidal spin texture. An alternative way is to use chiral multiferroics (prototype material is LiCu2O2) that induce a proximity effect. The theoretical approach we present here is valid for both cases. We observed that opposite to a ferromagnetically ordered case, a chiral spin order does not destroy the Dirac point. We also observed that the energy gap appears at the edges of the new Brillouin zone. Another interesting result concerns the spin dynamics. We derived an equation for the spin density dynamics with a spin current and relaxation terms. We have shown that the motion of the conductance electron generates a magnetic torque and exerts a certain force on the helicoidal texture.

Thermally induced magnonic spin current, thermomagnonic torques and domain wall dynamics in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Thermally activated domain wall (DW) motion in magnetic insulators has been considered theoretically, with a particular focus on the role of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) and thermomagnonic torques. The thermally assisted DW motion is a consequence of the magnonic spin current due to the applied thermal bias. In addition to the exchange magnonic spin current and the exchange adiabatic and the entropic spin transfer torques, we also consider the DMI-induced magnonic spin current, thermomagnonic DMI field-like torque and the DMI entropic torque. Analytical estimations are supported by numerical calculations. We found that the DMI has a substantial influence on the size and the geometry of DWs, and that the DWs become oriented parallel to the long axis of the nanostrip. Increasing the temperature smoothes the DWs. Moreover, the thermallyinduced magnonic current generates a torque on the DWs, which is responsible for their motion. From our analysis it follows that for a large enough DMI the influence of DMI-induced field-like torque is much stronger than that of the DMI and the exchange entropic torques. By manipulating the strength of the DMI constant, one can control the speed of the DW motion, and the direction of the DW motion can be switched, as well. We also found that DMI not only contributes to the total magnonic current, but also it modifies the exchange magnonic spin current, and this modification depends on the orientation of the steady state magnetization. The observed phenomenon can be utilized in spin caloritronics devices, for example in the DMI based thermal diodes. By switching the magnetization direction, one can rectify the total magnonic spin current.

Superadiabatic quantum heat engine with a multiferroic working medium

A quantum thermodynamic cycle with a chiral multiferroic working substance such as $\textrm{LiCu}_{2}\textrm{O}_{2}$ is presented. Shortcuts to adiabaticity are employed to achieve an efficient, finite time quantum thermodynamic cycle which is found to depend on the spin ordering. The emergent electric polarization associated with the chiral spin order, i.e. the magnetoelectric coupling, renders possible steering of the spin order by an external electric field and hence renders possible an electric-field control of the cycle. Due to the intrinsic coupling between of the spin and the electric polarization, the cycle performs an electro-magnetic work. We determine this work's mean square fluctuations, the irreversible work, and the output power of the cycle. We observe that the work mean square fluctuations are increased with the duration of the adiabatic strokes while the irreversible work and the output power of the cycle show a non-monotonic behavior. In particular the irreversible work vanishes at the end of the quantum adiabatic strokes. This fact confirms that the cycle is reversible. Our theoretical findings evidence the existence of a system inherent maximal output power. By implementing a Lindblad master equation we quantify the role of thermal relaxations on the cycle efficiency. We also discuss the role of entanglement encoded in the non-collinear spin order as a resource to affect the quantum thermodynamic cycle.

Pulse and quench induced dynamical phase transition in a chiral multiferroic spin chain

Quantum dynamics of magnetic order in a chiral multiferroic chain is studied. We consider two different scenarios: Ultrashort terahertz (THz) excitations or a sudden electric field quench. Performing analytical and numerical exact diagonalization calculations we trace the pulse induced spin dynamics and extract quantities that are relevant to quantum information processing. In particular, we analyze the dynamics of the system chirality, the von Neumann entropy, the pairwise and the many body entanglement. If the characteristic frequencies of the generated states are non-commensurate then a partial loss of pair concurrence occurs. Increasing the system size this effect becomes even more pronounced. Many particle entanglement and chirality are robust and persist in the incommensurate phase. To analyze the dynamical quantum transitions for the quenched and pulsed dynamics we combined the Weierstrass factorization technique for entire functions and Lanczos exact diagonalization method. For a small system we obtained analytical results including the rate function of Loschmidt echo. Exact numerical calculations for a system up to 40 spins confirm phase transition. Quench- induced dynamical transitions have been extensively studied recently. Here we show that related dynamical transitions can be achieved and controlled by appropriate electric field pulses.

We propose an electromagnetically tunable thermal diode based on a two phase multiferroics composite. Analytical and full numerical calculations for prototypical heterojunction composed of Iron on Barium titanate in the tetragonal phase demonstrate a strong heat rectification effect that can be controlled externally by a moderate electric field. This finding is of an importance for thermally based information processing and sensing and can also be integrated in (spin)electronic circuits for heat management and recycling.

Spectral characteristics of time resolved magnonic spin Seebeck effect

Spin Seebeck effect (SSE) holds promise for new spintronic devices with low-energy consumption. The underlying physics, essential for a further progress, is yet to be fully clarified. This study of the time resolved longitudinal SSE in the magnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (YIG) concludes that a substantial contribution to the spin current stems from small wave-vector subthermal exchange magnons. Our finding is in line with the recent experiment by S. R. Boona and J. P. Heremans, Phys. Rev. B 90, 064421 (2014). Technically, the spin-current dynamics is treated based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation also including magnons back-action on thermal bath, while the formation of the time dependent thermal gradient is described self-consistently via the heat equation coupled to the magnetization dynamics

Magnon-driven longitudinal spin Seebeck effect in F|N and N|F|N structures: role of asymmetric in-plane magnetic anisotropy

The influence of an asymmetric in-plane magnetic anisotropy on the thermally activated spin current is studied theoretically for two different systems; (i) the system consisting of a ferromagnetic insulator in a direct contact with a nonmagnetic metal, and the sandwich structure consisting of a ferromagnetic insulating part sandwiched between two nonmagnetic metals. It is shown that when the difference between the temperatures of the two nonmagnetic metals in a structure is not large, the spin pumping currents from the magnetic part to the nonmagnetic ones are equal in amplitude and have opposite directions, so only the spin torque current contributes to the total spin current. The spin current flows then from the nonmagnetic metal with the higher temperature to the nonmagnetic metal having a lower temperature. Its amplitude varies linearly with the difference in temperatures. In addition, we have found that if the magnetic anisotropy is in the layer plane, then the spin current increases with the magnon temperature, while in the case of an out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy the spin current decreases when the magnon temperature enhances. Enlarging the difference between the temperatures of the nonmagnetic metals, the linear response becomes important, as confirmed by analytical expressions inferred from the Fokker-Planck approach and by the results obtained upon a full numerical integration of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.

Creation and Amplification of Electro-Magnon Solitons by Electric Field in Nanostructured Multiferroics

We develop a theoretical description of electro-magnon solitons in a coupled ferroelectric-ferromagnetic heterostructure. The solitons are considered in the weakly nonlinear limit as a modulation of plane waves corresponding to two, electric- and magnetic-like branches in the spectrum. Emphasis is put on magnetic-like envelope solitons that can be created by an alternating electric field. It is shown also that the magnetic pulses can be amplified by an electric field with a frequency close to the band edge of the magnetic branch.

Three-level spin system under decoherence-minimizing driving fields: Application to nitrogen-vacancy spin dynamics

Within the framework of a general three-level problem, the dynamics of the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) spin is studied for the case of a special type of external driving consisting of a set of continuous fields with decreasing intensities. Such a set has been proposed for minimizing coherence losses. Each new driving field with smaller intensity is designed to protect against the fluctuations induced by the driving field at the preceding step with larger intensity. We show that indeed this particular type of external driving minimizes the loss of coherence, using purity and entropy as quantifiers for this purpose. As an illustration, we study the coherence loss of an NV spin due to a surrounding spin bath of $^{13}$C nuclei.

On the longitudinal spin current induced by a temperature gradient in a ferromagnetic insulator

Based on the solution of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation discretized for a ferromagnetic chain subject to a uniform temperature gradient, we present a detailed numerical study of the spin dynamics with a focus particularly on finite-size effects. We calculate and analyze the net longitudinal spin current for various temperature gradients, chain lengths, and external static magnetic fields. In addition, we model an interface formed by a nonuniformly magnetized finite-size ferromagnetic insulator and a normal metal and inspect the effects of enhanced Gilbert damping on the formation of the space-dependent spin current within the chain. A particular aim of this study is the inspection of the spin Seebeck effect beyond the linear response regime. We find that within our model the microscopic mechanism of the spin Seebeck current is the magnon accumulation effect quantified in terms of the exchange spin torque. According to our results, this effect drives the spin Seebeck current even in the absence of a deviation between the magnon and phonon temperature profiles. Our theoretical findings are in line with the recently observed experimental results by M. Agrawal et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 107204 (2013).

Helical multiferroics for electric field controlled quantum information processing

Magnetoelectric coupling in helical multiferroics allows to steer spin order with electric fields. Here we show theoretically that in a helical multiferroic chain quantum information processing as well as quantum phases are highly sensitive to electric (E) field. Applying E-field, the quantum state transfer fidelity can be increased and made directionally dependent. We also show that E field transforms the spin-density-wave/nematic or multipolar phases of frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain in chiral phase with a strong magnetoelectric coupling. We find sharp reorganization of the entanglement spectrum as well as a large enhancement of fidelity susceptibility at Ising quantum phase transition from nematic to chiral states driven by electric field. These findings point to a new tool for quantum information with low power consumption.
