X-ray groups and clusters of galaxies in the Subaru-XMM Deep Field

We present the results of a search for galaxy clusters in Subaru-XMM Deep Field. We reach a depth for a total cluster flux in the 0.5-2 keV band of 2x10^{-15} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1} over one of the widest XMM-Newton contiguous raster surveys, covering an area of 1.3 square degrees. Cluster candidates are identified through a wavelet detection of extended X-ray emission. The red sequence technique allows us to identify 57 cluster candidates. We report on the progress with the cluster spectroscopic follow-up and derive their properties based on the X-ray luminosity and cluster scaling relations. In addition, 3 sources are identified as X-ray counterparts of radio lobes, and in 3 further sources, X-ray counterpart of radio lobes provides a significant fraction of the total flux of the source. In the area covered by NIR data, our identification success rate achieves 86%. We detect a number of radio galaxies within our groups and for a luminosity-limited sample of radio galaxies we compute halo occupation statistics using a marked cluster mass function. We compare the cluster detection statistics in the SXDF with the predictions of concordance cosmology and current knowledge of the X-ray cluster properties, concluding that a reduction of concordance sigma_8 value by 5% is required in order to match the prediction of the model and the data. This conclusion still needs verification through the completion of cluster follow-up.

The discovery of a massive supercluster at z=0.9 in the UKIDSS DXS

We analyse the first publicly released deep field of the UKIDSS Deep eXtragalactic Survey (DXS) to identify candidate galaxy over-densities at z~1 across ~1 sq. degree in the ELAIS-N1 field. Using I-K, J-K and K-3.6um colours we identify and spectroscopically follow-up five candidate structures with Gemini/GMOS and confirm they are all true over-densities with between five and nineteen members each. Surprisingly, all five structures lie in a narrow redshift range at z=0.89+/-0.01, although they are spread across 30Mpc on the sky. We also find a more distant over-density at z=1.09 in one of the spectroscopic survey regions. These five over-dense regions lying in a narrow redshift range indicate the presence of a supercluster in this field and by comparing with mock cluster catalogs from N-body simulations we discuss the likely properties of this structure. Overall, we show that the properties of this supercluster are similar to the well-studied Shapley and Hercules superclusters at lower redshift.

The Identification of BHB Stars Using GALEX and other photometry

Halo samples that have no kinematic bias have been successfully isolated by photometric observations. We show that the near-UV (NUV) magnitude of the GALEX All-Sky Survey can be used, together with Johnson BV magnitudes in a (NUV-V)_0 vs. (B-V)_0 plot, to distinguish blue horizontal branch (BHB) from other A stars of the same B-V color for 12<V<18. In addition, we use SDSS gr magnitudes in a (NUV - r)_0 vs. (g-r)_0 plot for 14<r<18. The faint limit will be extended by ~3 magnitudes for the GALEX Medium-Deep Survey. Attempts to use NUV in conjunction with 2MASS magnitudes and ROTSE m_r magnitudes did not prove useful. The (NUV - V)_0 vs. (B-V)_0 plot was used to examine BHB star candidates of varying quality near the South Galactic Pole. We conclude that the addition of the GALEX NUV significantly adds to the reliabilty with which these stars can be identified.

Galaxy clusters at 0.6 < z < 1.4 in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey Early Data Release

We present the first cluster catalogue extracted from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Early Data Release. The catalogue is created using UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey infrared J and K data combined with 3.6 micro-m and 4.5 micro-m Spitzer bands and optical BVRi'z' imaging from the Subaru Telescope over 0.5 square degrees in the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field. We have created a new cluster-detection algorithm, based on the Friends-Of-Friends and Voronoi Tessellation methods, which utilises probability distribution functions derived from a photometric redshift analysis. We employ mock catalogues to understand the selection effects and contamination associated with the algorithm. The cluster catalogue contains 13 clusters at redshifts 0.61 <= z <= 1.39 with luminosities 10 L* <~ L_tot <~ 50 L*, corresponding to masses 5 x 10^13 M_sun <~ M_cluster <~ 3 x 10^14 M_sun for (M/M_sun) / (L/L_sun) = 75h. The measured sky surface density of ~ 10 deg^-2 for high-redshift (z=0.5-1.5), massive (>10^14 M_sun) clusters is precisely in line with theoretical predictions presented by Kneissl et al. (2001).

Spatial and Velocity clumping in an SDSS blue horizontal branch star catalogue

We present evidence for eight new clumps of blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars discovered in a catalogue of these stars compiled from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) by Sirko et al. published in 2004. Clumps are identified by selecting pairs of stars separated by distances <= 2 kpc and with differences in galactocentric radial velocities < 25 km/s. Each clump contains four or more stars. Four of the clumps have supporting evidence: two of them also contain overdensities of RR Lyrae stars which makes their reality very likely. At least one of the clumps is likely to be associated with the tidal debris of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We emphasize that more accurate observations of the radial velocities or proper motions of the stars in the clumps as well as the identification of other halo stars in these regions are required to establish the reality of the remaining clumps.

Probing the Sagittarius stream with blue horizontal branch stars

We present 2-degree field spectroscopic observations of a sample of 96 A-type stars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 3 (SDSS DR3). Our aim is to identify blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars in order to measure the kinematic properties of the tidal tails of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We confine our attention to the 44 classifiable stars with spectra of signal-to-noise ratio >15 per angstrom. Classification produces a sample of 29 BHB stars at distances 5-47 kpc from the Sun. We split our sample into three bins based on their distance. We find 10 of the 12 stars at 14-25 kpc appear to have coherent, smoothly varying radial velocities which are plausibly associated with old debris in the Sagittarius tidal stream. Further observations along the orbit and at greater distances are required to trace the full extent of this structure on the sky. Three of our BHB stars in the direction of the globular cluster Palomar (Pal) 5 appear to be in an overdensity but are in the foreground of Pal 5. More observations are required around this overdensity to establish any relation to Pal 5 and/or the Sgr stream. We emphasize observations of BHB stars have unlimited potential for providing accurate velocity and distance information in old distant halo streams and globular clusters alike. The next generation multi-object spectrographs provide an excellent opportunity to accurately trace the full extent of such structures.

Distant Field BHB Stars III: Identification of a probable outer halo stream at Galactocentric distance r = 70 kpc

We present VLT-FORS1 spectra of a sample of 34 faint 20.0 < g* < 21.1 A-type stars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release, with the goal of measuring the velocity dispersion of blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars in the remote Galactic halo, R~80kpc. We show that colour selection with 1.08 < u*-g* < 1.40 and -0.2 < g*-r* < -0.04 minimises contamination of the sample by less luminous blue stragglers. In classifying the stars we confine our attention to the 20 stars with spectra of signal-to-noise ratio > 15 per Angstrom. Classification produces a sample of eight BHB stars at distances 65-102 kpc from the Sun (mean 80 kpc), which represents the most distant sample of Galactic stars with measured radial velocities. The dispersion of the measured radial component of the velocity with respect to the centre of the Galaxy is 58+-15km/s. This value is anomalously low in comparison with measured values for stars at smaller distances, as well as for satellites at similar distances. Seeking an explanation for the low measured velocity dispersion, further analysis reveals that six of the eight remote BHB stars are plausibly associated with a single orbit. Three previously known outer halo carbon stars also appear to belong to this stream. The velocity dispersion of all nine stars relative to the orbit is only 15+-4 km/s. Further observations along the orbit are required to trace the full extent of this structure on the sky.

The cosmic evolution of low-luminosity radio sources from the SDSS DR1

In this paper we constrain the evolution in the comoving space density for low-luminosity (typically FRI) radio sources as a function of cosmic epoch by matching deep radio surveys (WENSS, FIRST and NVSS) with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). This results in 1014 matched radio sources covering an effective area of 0.217 sr, 686 with L(325 MHz) < 10^25 W/Hz/sr, which is an order of magnitude larger than any previous study at these luminosities. Using the non-parametric V/Vmax test we show that low-luminosity radio sources evolve differently to their more powerful, predominantly FRII, counterparts. Indeed, we find that the lower luminosity population is consistent with a constant comoving space density with redshift, as opposed to the strong positive evolution for the more powerful sources.

Distant field BHB stars and the mass of the Galaxy II: Photometry and spectroscopy of UKST candidates 16<B<19.5, 11<R<52 kpc

This is the second in a series of papers presenting a new calculation of the mass of the Galaxy based on radial velocities and distances for a sample of faint 16 < B < 21.3 field blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars. We present accurate BV CCD photometry and spectra for 142 candidate A-type stars selected from ub_jr photometry of UK Schmidt telescope plates in six high-Galactic-latitude fields. Classification of these candidates produces a sample of 60 BHB stars at distances of 11-52 kpc from the Sun (mean 28 kpc), with heliocentric line-of-sight velocities accurate to 15 km/s, and distance errors < 10%. We provide a summary table listing coordinates and velocities of these stars. The measured dispersion of the radial component of the Galactocentric velocity for this sample is 108+-10 km/s, in agreement with a recent study of the distant halo by Sirko and coworkers. Measurements of the Ca II K line indicate that nearly all the stars are metal-poor with a mean [Fe/H] = -1.8 with dispersion 0.5. Subsequent papers will describe a second survey of BHBs to heliocentric distances 70 < R < 125 kpc and present a new estimate of the mass of the Galaxy.

Mapping the Remote Milky Way Halo using BHB stars at 70 < r < 130 kpc

We increase the number of remote halo tracers by using blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars out to Galactocentric distances of 130 kpc. We use SDSS EDR photometry and the VLT to detect 16 BHB stars at Galactocentric distances 70 < r < 130, and to measure their radial velocities. We find the mass of the Milky Way is M =1.7^{+3.0}_{-0.6} x 10^{12} solar masses. When completed this survey will: (i) substantially reduce the errors in the total mass and extent of the Milky Way halo, (ii) map the velocity space in a hitherto unexplored region of the halo.

Distant field BHB stars and the mass of the Galaxy I: Classification of halo A-type stars

This is the first in a series of three papers presenting a new calculation of the mass of the Galaxy based on radial velocities and distances measured for a sample of some 100 faint 16 < B < 20 field blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars. This study aims to reduce the uncertainty in the measured mass of the Galaxy by increasing the number of halo objects at Galactocentric distances r>30 kpc with measured radial velocities by a factor five. Faint A-type stars in the Galactic halo have been identified from UBR photometry in six UK Schmidt fields. We obtain accurate CCD photometry and spectra to classify these stars. This paper describes our methods for separating out clean samples of BHB stars in a way that is efficient in terms of telescope time required. We use the high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) spectra of A-type stars of Kinman, Suntzeff & Kraft (published in 1994) to assess the reliability of two methods, and to quantify the S/N requirements. First we revisit, refine and extend the hydrogen line width versus colour relation as a classifier. The second method is new and compares the shapes of the Balmer lines. Using the equivalent width of the Ca II K line as an additional filter we find we can reproduce Kinman, Suntzeff & Kraft's classifications with both methods.
