EuCAPT White Paper: Opportunities and Challenges for Theoretical Astroparticle Physics in the Next Decade

Astroparticle physics is undergoing a profound transformation, due to a series of extraordinary new results, such as the discovery of high-energy cosmic neutrinos with IceCube, the direct detection of gravitational waves with LIGO and Virgo, and many others. This white paper is the result of a collaborative effort that involved hundreds of theoretical astroparticle physicists and cosmologists, under the coordination of the European Consortium for Astroparticle Theory (EuCAPT). Addressed to the whole astroparticle physics community, it explores upcoming theoretical opportunities and challenges for our field of research, with particular emphasis on the possible synergies among different subfields, and the prospects for solving the most fundamental open questions with multi-messenger observations.

Long-Lived stop at the LHC with or without R-parity

We consider scenarios of gravitino LSP and DM with stop NLSP both within R-parity conserving and R-parity violating supersymmetry (RPC and RPV SUSY, respectively). We discuss cosmological bounds from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) and the gravitino abundance and then concentrate on the signals of long-lived stops at the LHC as displaced vertices or metastable particles. Finally we discuss how to distinguish R-parity conserving and R-parity breaking stop decays if they happen within the detector and suppress SM backgrounds.

Gravitino Dark Matter and the ILC

We review the case of gravitino Dark Matter for stop, neutralino and sneutrino Next-to-Lightest Supersymmetric Particles and discuss prospects to investigate such scenarios at LHC and a Linear Collider.

Signatures of Axinos and Gravitinos at Colliders

The axino and the gravitino are well-motivated candidates for the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) and also for cold dark matter in the Universe. Assuming that a charged slepton is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP), we show how the NLSP decays can be used to probe the axino LSP scenario in hadronic axion models as well as the gravitino LSP scenario at the Large Hadron Collider and the International Linear Collider. We show how one can identify experimentally the scenario realized in nature. In the case of the axino LSP, the NLSP decays will allow one to estimate the value of the axino mass and the Peccei-Quinn scale.

Flavour structure and proton decay in 6D orbifold GUTs

We study proton decay in a supersymmetric {\sf SO(10)} gauge theory in six dimensions compactified on an orbifold. The dimension-5 proton decay operators are forbidden by R-symmetry, whereas the dimension-6 operators are enhanced due to the presence of KK towers. Three sequential quark-lepton families are localised at the three orbifold fixed points, where {\sf SO(10)} is broken to its three GUT subgroups. The physical quarks and leptons are mixtures of these brane states and additional bulk zero modes. This leads to a characteristic pattern of branching ratios in proton decay, in particular the suppression of the $p\to \m^+K^0$ mode.

Quarks and Leptons between Branes and Bulk

We study a supersymmetric SO(10) gauge theory in six dimensions compactified on an orbifold. Three sequential quark-lepton families are localized at the three fixpoints where SO(10) is broken to its three GUT subgroups. Split bulk multiplets yield the Higgs doublets of the standard model and as additional states lepton doublets and down-quark singlets. The physical quarks and leptons are mixtures of brane and bulk states. The model naturally explains small quark mixings together with large lepton mixings in the charged current. A small hierarchy of neutrino masses is obtained due to the different down-quark and up-quark mass hierarchies. None of the usual GUT relations between fermion masses holds exactly.

Bulk and brane anomalies in six dimensions

We study anomalies of six-dimensional gauge theories compactified on orbifolds. In addition to the known bulk anomalies, brane anomalies appear on orbifold fixpoints in the case of chiral boundary conditions. At a fixpoint, where the bulk gauge group G is broken to a subgroup H, the non-abelian G-anomaly in the bulk reduces to a H-anomaly which depends in a simple manner on the chiral boundary conditions. We illustrate this mechanism by means of a SO(10) GUT model.

Exceptional Coset Spaces and Unification in Six Dimensions

The coset spaces E$_8$/SO(10)$\times$H$_F$ allow complex structures which can account for three quark-lepton generations including right-handed neutrinos. We show that in the context of supersymmetric SO(10) gauge theories in 6 dimensions they also provide the Higgs fields which are needed to break the electroweak and ${B-L}$ gauge symmetries, and to generate small neutrino masses via the seesaw mechanism.

Gauge Unification In Six Dimensions

We study the breaking of a supersymmetric SO(10) GUT in 6 dimensions by orbifold compactification. In 4 dimensions we obtain a N=1 supersymmetric theory with the standard model gauge group enlarged by an additional U(1) symmetry. The 4-dimensional gauge symmetry is obtained as intersection of the Pati-Salam and the Georgi-Glashow subgroups of SO(10), which appear as unbroken subgroups in the two 5 dimensional subspaces, respectively. The doublet-triplet splitting arises as in the recently discussed SU(5) GUTs in 5 dimensions.

False Vacuum Decay after Inflation

Inflation is terminated by a non-equilibrium process which finally leads to a thermal state. We study the onset of this transition in a class of hybrid inflation models. The exponential growth of tachyonic modes leads to decoherence and spinodal decomposition. We compute the decoherence time, the spinodal time, the size of the formed domains and the homogeneous classical fields within a single domain.

Global fits for the spectral index of the cosmological curvature perturbation

Best-fit values of the spectral index of the curvature perturbation are presented, assuming the $Λ$CDM cosmology. Apart from the spectral index, the parameters are the Hubble parameter, the total matter density and the baryon density. The data points are intended to represent all measurements which are likely to significantly affect the result. The cosmic microwave anisotropy is represented by the COBE normalization, and heights of the first and second peaks given by the latest Boomerang and Maxima data. The slope of the galaxy correlation function and the matter density contrast on the $8h^{-1}\Mpc$ scale are each represented by a data point, as are the expected values of the Hubble parameter and matter density. The `low-deuterium' nucleosynthesis value of the baryon density provides a final data point, the fit giving a value about one standard deviation higher. The reionization epoch is calculated from the model by assuming that it corresponds to the collapse of a fraction $f\gsim 10^{-4}$ of matter. We consider the case of a scale-independent spectral index, and also the scale-dependent spectral index predicted by running mass models of inflation. In the former case, the result is compared with the prediction of models of inflation based on effective field theory, in which the field value is small on the Planck scale. Detailed comparison is made with other fits, and other approaches to the comparison with theory.

Hybrid Inflation from Supersymmetric SU(5)

A scheme of hybrid inflation is considered in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric SU(5) model with an extra singlet. The relevant role of the cubic term in the adjoint representation in the renormalizable superpotential is pointed out in order to have a quite wide region of initial conditions compatible with inflation efficiency, monopole density and perturbations constraint.

Baryogenesis from mixed particle decays

We consider the $CP$ violating asymmetries produced in the decay of heavy particles, studying the effects of heavy particle mixing for arbitrary mass splittings. A considerable enhancement of the asymmetries is achieved when the masses of the mixed states are comparable, and the enhancement is maximal for mass splittings of the order of the widths of the decaying particles. We apply the results to the particular case of heavy scalar neutrino decays relevant for leptogenesis scenarios.

CP violating decays in leptogenesis scenarios

We compute the CP violation in the decays of heavy electroweak singlet neutrinos, arising from both the one--loop vertex corrections and the wave function mixing. We extend the computation to the supersymmetric version of the model and discuss the implications for the generation of a lepton number asymmetry by the out of equilibrium decay of the heavy (s)neutrinos in the early Universe, to be reprocessed later in the observed baryon excess by anomalous electroweak processes.
