Josephson physics of spin-orbit coupled elongated Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider an ultracold bosonic binary mixture confined in a one-dimensional double-well trap. The two bosonic components are assumed to be two hyperfine internal states of the same atom. We suppose that these two components are spin-orbit coupled between each other. We employ the two-mode approximation starting from two coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations and derive a system of ordinary differential equations governing the temporal evolution of the inter-well population imbalance of each component and that between the two bosonic species. We study the Josephson oscillations of these spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates by analyzing the interplay between the interatomic interactions and the spin-orbit coupling and the self-trapped dynamics of the inter-species imbalance. We show that the dynamics of this latter variable is crucially determined by the relationship between the spin-orbit coupling, the tunneling energy, and the interactions.

Entanglement entropy and macroscopic quantum states with dipolar bosons in a triple-well potential

We study interacting dipolar atomic bosons in a triple-well potential within a ring geometry. This system is shown to be equivalent to a three-site Bose-Hubbard model. We analyze the ground state of dipolar bosons by varying the effective on-site interaction. This analysis is performed both numerically and analytically by using suitable coherent-state representations of the ground state. The latter exhibits a variety of forms ranging from the su(3) coherent state in the delocalization regime to a macroscopic cat-like state with fully localized populations, passing for a coexistence regime where the ground state displays a mixed character. We characterize the quantum correlations of the ground state from the bi-partition perspective. We calculate both numerically and analytically (within the previous coherent-state representation) the single-site entanglement entropy which, among various interesting properties, exhibits a maximum value in correspondence to the transition from the cat-like to the coexistence regime. In the latter case, we show that the ground-state mixed form corresponds, semiclassically, to an energy exhibiting two almost-degenerate minima.

Two-mode dipolar bosonic junctions

We consider a two-mode atomic Josephson junction realized with dilute dipolar bosons confined by a double-well. We employ the two-site extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian and characterize the ground-state of this system by the Fisher information, coherence visibility, and entanglement entropy. These quantities are studied as functions of the interaction between bosons in different wells. The emergence of Schroedinger-cat like state with a loss of coherence is also commented.

Tuning Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings: Effects on singlet and triplet condensation with Fermi atoms

We investigate the pair condensation of a two-spin-component Fermi gas in the presence of both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. We calculate the condensate fraction in the BCS-BEC crossover both in two and in three dimensions by taking into account singlet and triplet pairings. These quantities are studied by varying the spin-orbit interaction from the case with the only Rashba to the equal-Rashba-Dresselhaus one. We find that, by mixing the two couplings, the singlet pairing decreases while the triplet pairing is suppressed in the BCS regime and increased in the BEC regime, both in two and three dimensions. At fixed spin-orbital strength, the greatest total condensate fraction is obtained when only one coupling (only Rashba or only Dresselhaus) is present.

Condensate fraction of a resonant Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling in three and two dimensions

We study the effects of laser-induced Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling along the BCS-BEC crossover of a Feshbach resonance for a two-spin-component Fermi gas. We calculate the condensate fraction in three and two dimensions and find that this quantity characterizes the crossover better than other quantities, like the chemical potential or the pairing gap. By considering both the singlet and the triplet pairings, we calculate the condensate fraction and show that a large enough spin-orbit interaction enhances the singlet condensate fraction in the BCS side while suppressing it on the BEC side.

Wavevector-dependent spin filtering and spin transport through magnetic barriers in graphene

We study the spin-resolved transport through magnetic nanostructures in monolayer and bilayer graphene. We take into account both the orbital effect of the inhomogeneous perpendicular magnetic field as well as the in-plane spin splitting due to the Zeeman interaction and to the exchange coupling possibly induced by the proximity of a ferromagnetic insulator. We find that a single barrier exhibits a wavevector-dependent spin filtering effect at energies close to the transmission threshold. This effect is significantly enhanced in a resonant double barrier configuration, where the spin polarization of the outgoing current can be increased up to 100% by increasing the distance between the barriers.

Critical temperature of non-interacting Bose gases on disordered lattices

For a non-interacting Bose gas on a lattice we compute the shift of the critical temperature for condensation when random-bond and onsite disorder are present. We evidence that the shift depends on the space dimensionality D and the filling fraction f. For D -> infinity (infinite-range model), using results from the theory of random matrices, we show that the shift of the critical temperature is negative, depends on f, and vanishes only for large f. The connections with analogous results obtained for the spherical model are discussed. For D=3 we find that, for large f, the critical temperature Tc is enhanced by disorder and that the relative shift does not sensibly depend on f; at variance, for small f, Tc decreases in agreement with the results obtained for a Bose gas in the continuum. We also provide numerical estimates for the shift of the critical temperature due to disorder induced on a non-interacting Bose gas by a bichromatic incommensurate potential.

Multiple magnetic barriers in graphene

We study the behavior of charge carriers in graphene in inhomogeneous perpendicular magnetic fields. We consider two types of one-dimensional magnetic profiles, uniform in one direction: a sequence of N magnetic barriers, and a sequence of alternating magnetic barriers and wells. In both cases, we compute the transmission coefficient of the magnetic structure by means of the transfer matrix formalism, and the associated conductance. In the first case the structure becomes increasingly transparent upon increasing N at fixed total magnetic flux. In the second case we find strong wave-vector filtering and resonant effects. We also calculate the band structure of a periodic magnetic superlattice, and find a wave-vector-dependent gap around zero-energy.

Superconducting non-equilibrium transport through a weakly interacting quantum dot

We study the out-of-equilibrium current through an interacting quantum dot modelled as an Anderson impurity contacted by two BCS superconductors held at fixed voltage bias. In order to account for multiple Andreev reflections, we develop a Keldysh Green's function scheme perturbative in the dot's interaction strength. We find an unexpected enhancement of the current due to repulsive interactions for small lead-to-dot couplings.

Conductance quantization and snake states in graphene magnetic waveguides

We consider electron waveguides (quantum wires) in graphene created by suitable inhomogeneous magnetic fields. The properties of uni-directional snake states are discussed. For a certain magnetic field profile, two spatially separated counter-propagating snake states are formed, leading to conductance quantization insensitive to backscattering by impurities or irregularities of the magnetic field.

Magnetic confinement of massless Dirac fermions in graphene

Due to Klein tunneling, electrostatic potentials are unable to confine Dirac electrons. We show that it is possible to confine massless Dirac fermions in a monolayer graphene sheet by inhomogeneous magnetic fields. This allows one to design mesoscopic structures in graphene by magnetic barriers, e.g. quantum dots or quantum point contacts.

Josephson current through a quantum dot with spin-orbit coupling

The equilibrium Josephson current through a nanoscale multi-level quantum dot with Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling $α$ has been computed. The critical current can be drastically modified already by moderate $α$. In the presence of a Zeeman field, Datta-Das-like oscillatory dependencies on $α$ are predicted.

Quasi-particle dephasing time in disordered d-wave superconductors

We evaluate the low-temperature cutoff for quantum interference 1/tf induced in a d-wave superconductor by the diffusion enhanced quasiparticle interactions in the presence of disorder. We carry out our analysis in the framework of the non-linear sigma-model which allows a direct calculation of 1/tf, as the mass of the transverse modes of the theory. Only the triplet amplitude in the particle-hole channel and the Cooper amplitude with is pairing symmetry contribute to 1/tf. We discuss the possible relevance of our results to the present disagreement between thermal transport data in cuprates and the localization theory for d-wave quasiparticles.

Effect of mesoscopic inhomogeneities on local tunnelling density of states

We carry out a theoretical analysis of the momentum dependence of the Fourier-transformed local density of states (LDOS) in the superconducting cuprates within a model considering the interference of quasiparticles scattering on quenched impurities. The impurities introduce an external scattering potential, which is either nearly local in space or it can acquire a substantial momentum dependence due to a possible strong momentum dependence of the electronic screening near a charge modulation instability. The key new effect that we introduce is an additional mesoscopic disorder aiming to reproduce the inhomogeneities experimentally observed in scanning tunnelling microscopy. The crucial effect of this mesoscopic disorder is to give rise to point-like spectroscopic features, to be contrasted with the curve-like shape of the spectra previously calculated within the interfering-quasiparticle schemes. It is also found that stripe-like charge modulations play a relevant role to correctly reproduce all the spectral features of the experiments.
