Non-adiabatic Oscillations of Red Giants

Using our non-local time-dependent theory of convection, the linear non-adiabatic oscillations of 10 evolutionary model series with masses of 1--3M$_\odot$ are calculated. The results show that there is a red giant instability strip in the lower temperature side of the Hertzsprung-Russel (HR) diagram which goes along the sequences of the red giant branch (RGB) and the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). For red giants of lower luminosities, pulsation instability are found at high order overtones, the lower order modes from the fundamental to the second overtone are stable. Towards higher luminosity and lower effective temperature, instability moves to lower order modes, and the amplitude growth rate of oscillations also grows. At the high luminosity end of the strip, the fundamental and the first overtone become unstable, while all the modes above the 4th order become stable. The excitation mechanism have been sdudied in detail. It is found that turbulent pressure plays a key role for excitating of red variables. The frozen convecttin approximation is unavailaable for the low temperature stars with extended convective envelopes. In any case, this approximation can explain neither the red edge of the Cepheid instability strip, nor the blue edge of the pulsating red giant instability strip. An analytic expression of a pulsation constant as a function of stellar mass, luminosity and effective temperature is presented from this work.

Blue Straggler Stars in Galactic Open Clusters and the Simple Stellar Population Model

Blue straggler stars present as secure members in the Galactic open clusters form a major challenge to the conventional picture of evolutionary population synthesis based on the stellar evolution theory of single stars, as illustrated in our previous work. Expansion of our sample in the current work to include younger age clusters provides a larger data base to expose the question raised for the simple stellar population model. The working sample now includes 97 Galactic open clusters of ages ranging from 0.1 to several Gyrs. The contributions of blue straggler stars to the integrated light of the host clusters are calculated on an individual cluster base. A data base of observational constrained simple stellar population model is made which has a larger age coverage than our previous work. It is shown in this work that the general existence of blue stragglers in star clusters of our sample dramatically altered the predictions of convectional stellar population model in terms of spectral energy distribution. The integrated spectral energy distributions of the synthetic spectra of the clusters are enhanced towards shorter wavelengths, therefore the results of the present work will cast new lights in understanding the properties of stellar populations.

The blue stragglers formed via mass transfer in old open clusters

In this paper, we present the simulations for the primordial blue stragglers in the old open cluster M67 based on detailed modelling of the evolutionary processes. The principal aim is to discuss the contribution of mass transfer between the components of close binaries to the blue straggler population in M67. First, we followed the evolution of a binary of 1.4M$_\odot$+0.9M$_\odot$. The synthetic evolutionary track of the binary system revealed that a primordial blue straggler had a long lifetime in the observed blue straggler region of color-magnitude diagram. Second, a grid of models for close binary systems experiencing mass exchange were computed from 1Gyr to 6Gyr in order to account for primordial blue-straggler formation in a time sequence. Based on such a grid, Monte-Carlo simulations were applied for the old open cluster M67. Adopting appropriate orbital parameters, 4 primordial blue stragglers were predicted by our simulations. This was consistent with the observational fact that only a few blue stragglers in M67 were binaries with short orbital periods. An upper boundary of the primordial blue stragglers in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) was defined and could be used to distinguish blue stragglers that were not formed via mass exchange. Using the grid of binary models, the orbital periods of the primordial BSs could be predicted. Compared with the observations, it is clear that the mechanism discussed in this work alone cannot fully predict the blue straggler population in M67. There must be several other processes also involved in the formation of the observed blue stragglers in M67.

Quantum Depletion of a Soliton Condensate

We present rigorous results on the diagonalization of Bogoliubov Hamilto- nian for a soliton condensate. Using the complete and orthonomalized set of eigenfunction for the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations, we calculate ex- actly the quantum depletion of the condensate and show that two degenerate zero-modes, which originate from a U(1) guage- and a translational-symmetry breaking of the system, induce the quantum diffusion and transverse instabil- ity of the soliton condensate.

The Luminosity and Metallicity Relation of distant luminous infrared galaxies

Oxygen abundances [12+log(O/H)] in the interstellar medium of a large sample of distant (z>0.4) luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) were estimated from their extinction corrected emission-line ratios, on the basis of the VLT/FORS2 spectra with good S/N and moderate resolution. These LIRGs were selected from ISOCAM deep survey fields (CFRS, UDSR, UDSF). They show oxygen abundances ranging from 8.36 to 8.93, with a median value of 8.67, which is 0.5 lower than that of the local bright disks (i.e., L*) at the given magnitude. A significant fraction of distant large disks are indeed LIRGs. Such massive disks could have formed ~50% of their metals and stellar masses since z~1.

Blue Stragglers in Galactic Open Clusters and the Integrated Spectral Energy Distributions

Synthetic integrated spectral properties of the old Galactic open clusters are studies in this work, where twenty-seven Galactic open clusters of ages >= 1Gyr are selected as the working sample. Based on the photometric observations of these open clusters, synthetic integrated spectrum has been made for the stellar population of each cluster. The effects of blue straggler stars (BSSs) on the conventional simple stellar population (SSP) model are analyzed on an individual cluster base. It is shown that the BSSs, whose holding positions in the color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) cannot be predicted by the current single-star evolution theory, present significant modifications to the integrated properties of theoretical SSP model. The synthesized integrated spectral energy distributions (ISEDs) of our sample clusters are dramatically different from the SSPs based on isochrone only. The BSSs corrected ISEDs of stellar populations show systematic enhancements towards shorter wavelength in the spectra. When measured with wide-band colors in unresolvable conditions, the age of a stellar population can be seriously under-estimated by the conventional SSP model. Therefore, considering the common existence of BSS component in real stellar populations, a considerable amount of alternations on the conventional ISEDs should be expected when applying the technique of evolutionary population synthesis (EPS) to more complicated stellar systems.

Steep optical wave group velocity reduction and storage of light without electromagnetically induced transparency

We report experimental investigationd of optical pulse group velocity reduction and probe pulse regeneration using a Raman scheme. The new scheme which does not rely on the on-one-photon resonance electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), has many advantages over the conventional method which critically relys on the transparency window created by an EIT process. We demonstrate significant reduction of group velocity, less probe field loss, reduced probe pulse distortion, and high probe pulse regeneration efficiency.

Studies of group velocity reduction and pulse regeneration with and without the adiabatic approximation

We present a detailed semiclassical study on the propagation of a pair of optical fields in resonant media with and without adiabatic approximation. In the case of near and on resonance excitation, we show detailed calculation, both analytically and numerically, on the extremely slowly propagating probe pulse and the subsequent regeneration of a pulse via a coupling laser. Further discussions on the adiabatic approximation provide many subtle understandings of the process including the effect on the band width of the regenerated optical field. Indeed, all features of the optical pulse regeneration and most of the intricate details of the process can be obtained with the present treatment without invoke a full field theoretical method. For very far off resonance excitation, we show that the analytical solution is nearly detuning independent, a surprising result that is vigorously tested and compared to numerical calculations with very good agreement.

Storage of light: A useful concept?

We show both analytically and numerically that photons from a probe pulse are not stored in several recent experiments. Rather, they are absorbed to produce a two-photon excitation. More importantly, when an identical coupling pulse is re-injected into the medium, we show that the regenerated optical field has a pulse width that is very different from the original probe field. It is therefore, not a faithful copy of the original probe pulse.

New Consequences of Induced Transparency in a Double-Lambda scheme: Destructive Interference In Four-wave Mixing

We investigate a four-state system interacting with long and short laser pulses in a weak probe beam approximation. We show that when all lasers are tuned to the exact unperturbed resonances, part of the four-wave mixing (FWM) field is strongly absorbed. The part which is not absorbed has the exact intensity required to destructively interfere with the excitation pathway involved in producing the FWM state. We show that with this three-photon destructive interference, the conversion efficiency can still be as high as 25%. Contrary to common belief, our calculation shows that this process, where an ideal one-photon electromagnetically induced transparency is established, is not most suitable for high efficiency conversion. With appropriate phase-matching and propagation distance, and when the three-photon destructive interference does not occur, we show that the photon flux conversion efficiency is independent of probe intensity and can be close to 100%. In addition, we show clearly that the conversion efficiency is not determined by the maximum atomic coherence between two lower excited states, as commonly believed. It is the combination of phase-matching and constructive interference involving the two terms arising in producing the mixing wave that is the key element for the optimized FWM generation. Indeed, in this scheme no appreciable excited state is produced, so that the atomic coherence between states |0> and |2> is always very small.

Imaging the phase of an evolving Bose-Einstein condensate wavefunction

We demonstrate a spatially resolved autocorrelation measurement with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and measure the evolution of the spatial profile of its quantum mechanical phase. Upon release of the BEC from the magnetic trap, its phase develops a form that we measure to be quadratic in the spatial coordinate. Our experiments also reveal the effects of the repulsive interaction between two overlapping BEC wavepackets and we measure the small momentum they impart to each other.

Turbulent Convection and pulsational Stability of Variable Stars I. Oscillations of Long-Period Variables

We have performed a linear pulsational stability survey of 6 series of long period variable models with M=1.0 Msun, L=3000 - 8000Lsun, and (X,Z)= (0.700,0.020),(0.735,0.005). The dynamic and thermodynamic couplings between convection and oscillations are treated by using a statistical theory of nonlocal and time-dependent convection. The results show that the fundamental and all the low overtones are always pulsationally unstable for the low temperature models when the coupling between convection and oscillations is ignored. When the coupling is considered, there is indeed a "Mira" pulsationally instability region outside of the Cepheid instability strip on the H-R diagram. The coolest models near the Hayashi track are pulsationally stable. Towards high temperature the fundamental mode first becomes unstable, and then the first overtone. Some one of the 2nd -4th overtone may become unstable for the hotter models. All the modes higher than 4th (n > 4) are pulsationally stable. The position and the width of such an instability region on the H-R diagram critically depends on the mass, luminosity and metal abundance of the star.

Turbulent Convection and Pulsational Stability of Variable Stars II. Oscillations of RR Lyrae and Horizontal Branch Red Variable Stars

Using a nonlocal time-dependent theory of convection, we have calculated the linear non-adiabatic oscillations of the Horizontal Branch (HB) stars, with both the dynamic and thermodynamic coupling between convection and oscillations carefully treated. Turbulent pressure and turbulent viscosity have been included consistently in our equations of non-adiabatic pulsation. When the coupling between convection and oscillations is ignored, for all models with Teff <= 7350, the fundamental through the second overtone are pulsationally unstable; while for Teff <= 6200 all the models are unstable up to (at least) the 9th overtone. When the coupling between convection and oscillations is included, the RR Lyrae instability strip is very well predicted. Within the strip the most models are pulsationally unstable only for the fundamental and the first few overtones. The turbulent viscosity is an important damping mechanism. Being exclusively distinct from the luminous red variables (long period variables), the HB stars to the right of the RR strip are pulsationally stable for the fundamental and low-order overtones, but become unstable for some oen of the high-order overtones. This may provide a valuable clue for the short period, low amplitude red variables found outside the red edge of the RR strip on the H-R diagram of globular clusters. Moreover, we present a new radiation modulated excitation mechanism functioning in a zone of radiation flux gradient. The effects of nonlocal convection and the dynamic coupling between convection and oscillations are discussed. The spatial oscillations of the thermal variables in the pulsational calculations have been effectively suppressed.
