Underground test of gravity-related wave function collapse

Roger Penrose proposed that a spatial quantum superposition collapses as a back-reaction from spacetime, which is curved in different ways by each branch of the superposition. In this sense, one speaks of gravity-related wave function collapse. He also provided a heuristic formula to compute the decay time of the superposition $\mathord{-}$ similar to that suggested earlier by Lajos Diósi, hence the name Diósi-Penrose model. The collapse depends on the effective size of the mass density of particles in the superposition, and is random: this randomness shows up as a diffusion of the particles' motion, resulting, if charged, in the emission of radiation. Here, we compute the radiation emission rate, which is faint but detectable. We then report the results of a dedicated experiment at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory to measure this radiation emission rate. Our result sets a lower bound on the effective size of the mass density of nuclei, which is about three orders of magnitude larger than previous bounds. This rules out the natural parameter-free version of the Diósi-Penrose model.

General Wick's Theorem for bosonic and fermionic operators

Wick's theorem provides a connection between time ordered products of bosonic or fermionic fields, and their normal ordered counterparts. We consider a generic pair of operator orderings and we prove, by induction, the theorem that relates them. We name this the General Wick's Theorem (GWT) because it carries Wick's theorem as special instance, when one applies the GWT to time and normal orderings. We establish the GWT both for bosonic and fermionic operators, i.e. operators that satisfy c-number commutation and anticommutation relations respectively. We remarkably show that the GWT is the same, independently from the type of operator involved. By means of a few examples, we show how the GWT helps treating demanding problems by reducing the amount of calculations required.

KNO Scaling in the Neutral Pion Multiplicity Distributions for pi^{-}-proton interactions at 40 and 250 GeV/c

We analysed the binomial multiplicity moments of the neutral pions, using an extension of the generating functional technique for detection losses. We applied this model-independent method to the individual gamma-weights of 10000 events of pi^{-}-proton interactions at 40 GeV/c. We compared the obtained results to those of 250 GeV/c. We used the FRITIOF and a shifted KW distribution to describe the data.
