A theoretical model for tellurite-sulfates Na$_2$Cu$_5$(TeO$_3$)(SO$_4$)$_3$(OH)$_4$ and K$_2$Cu$_5$(TeO$_3$)(SO$_4$)$_3$(OH)$_4$

A theoretical model for two new tellurite-sulfates, namely Na$_2$Cu$_5$(TeO$_3$)(SO$_4$)$_3$(OH)$_4$ and K$_2$Cu$_5$(TeO$_3$)(SO$_4$)$_3$ (OH)$_4$ is determined to be compatible with ab-initio calculations. The results obtained in this work show that some previous speculations in the literature about the couplings are correct, obtaining a model with a mixture of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings. We use a combination of numerical techniques to study the magnetic properties of the model. Our numerical calculations based on the density-matrix renormalization group method reveal that the system presents Ising-like magnetization plateaux at rational values of the saturation magnetization.

Casimir energy for N superconducting cavities: a model for the YBCO (BSCCO)

In this paper we study the Casimir energy of a sample made by N cavities, with N >> 1, across the transition from the metallic to the superconducting phase of the constituting plates. After having characterized the energy for the configuration in which the layers constituting the cavities are made by dielectric and for the configuration in which the layers are made by plasma sheets, we concentrate our analysis on the latter. It represents the final step towards the macroscopic characterization of a "multi cavity" (with N large) necessary to fully understand the behaviour of the Casimir energy of a YBCO (or a BSCCO) sample across the transition. Our analysis is especially useful to the Archimedes experiment, aimed at measuring the interaction of the electromagnetic vacuum energy with a gravitational field. To this purpose, we aim at modulating the Casimir energy of a layered structure, the multi cavity, by inducing a transition from the metallic to the superconducting phase. After having characterized the Casimir energy of such a structure for both the metallic and the superconducting phase, we give an estimate of the modulation of the energy across the transition.

Transient jets in the symbiotic prototype Z Andromedae

We present development of the collimated bipolar jets from the symbiotic prototype Z And that appeared and disappeared during its 2006 outburst. In 2006 July Z And reached its historical maximum at U ~ 8.0. During this period, rapid photometric variations with Dm ~ 0.06 mag on the timescale of hours developed. Simultaneously, high-velocity satellite components appeared on both sides of the H-alpha and H-beta emission line profiles. They were launched asymmetrically with the red/blue velocity ratio of 1.2 - 1.3. From about mid-August they became symmetric. Their spectral properties indicated ejection of bipolar jets collimated within an average opening angle of 6.1 degrees. We estimated average outflow rate via jets to dM(jet)/dt ~ 2xE10-6(R(jet)/1AU)**(1/2) M(Sun)/year, during their August - September maximum, which corresponds to the emitting mass in jets, M(jet, emitting) ~ 6xE-10(Rjet)/1AU)^{3/2} M(Sun). During their lifetime, the jets released the total mass of M(jet, total) approx 7.4x1E-7 M(Sun). Evolution in the rapid photometric variability and asymmetric ejection of jets around the optical maximum can be explained by a disruption of the inner parts of the disk caused by radiation-induced warping of the disk.

A non-spherical mass outflow from RS Oph during its 2006 outburst

We present results of our modeling the H-alpha line profile along the 2006 RS Oph outburst. At day 1.38 the very broad component of the H-alpha profile was possible to fit by a bipolar wind model. The model corresponds to a very fast acceleration of the wind particles, and the line luminosity of about 2900 (d/1.6 kpc)^2 solar luminosities to the mass-loss rate of around (1-2) x 10E-4 solar masses per year. During days 10-30 the broad component shrank to FWZI = 1800 km/s. It could be associated with expanding ring and its satellite components at about +/- 2430 km/s with bipolar jets. Later observations made at day 57 and 209 indicated a decrease in both the mass-loss rate (1xE-5 - 1xE-6 solar masses per year) and the wind acceleration. During the quiet phase, emission bumps observed sporadically in the line wings could reflect clumpy ejections by the central star.

The problem of a metal impurity in an oxide: ab-initio study of electronic and structural properties of Cd in Rutile TiO2

In this work we undertake the problem of a transition metal impurity in an oxide. We present an ab-initio study of the relaxations introduced in TiO2 when a Cd impurity replaces substitutionally a Ti atom. Using the Full-Potential Linearized-Augmented-Plane-Wave method we obtain relaxed structures for different charge states of the impurity and computed the electric-field gradients (EFGs) at the Cd site. We find that EFGs, and also relaxations, are dependent on the charge state of the impurity. This dependence is very remarkable in the case of the EFG and is explained analyzing the electronic structure of the studied system. We predict fairly anisotropic relaxations for the nearest oxygen neighbors of the Cd impurity. The experimental confirmation of this prediction and a brief report of these calculations have recently been presented [P.R.L. 89, 55503 (2002)]. Our results for relaxations and EFGs are in clear contradiction with previous studies of this system that assumed isotropic relaxations and point out that no simple model is viable to describe relaxations and the EFG at Cd in TiO2 even approximately.

Structure of the hot object in the symbiotic prototype Z And during its 2000-03 active phase

Aims: To investigate structure of the hot object in the symbiotic prototype Z And during its major 2000-03 active phase. Methods: Analysis of the far ultraviolet, optical low- and high-resolution spectroscopy and UBVR photometry. Reconstruction of the spectral energy distribution (SED) during the outburst. The Raman scattering process. Results: At the initial stages of the outburst the hot object was characterized by the two-temperature spectrum (a warm stellar radiation and a strong nebular emission) with signatures of a mass-outflow at moderate (100-200 km/s) and very high (1000-2000 km/s) velocities. The corresponding structure of the hot object consists of an optically thick, slowly-expanding disk-like material encompassing the accretor at the orbital plane and a fast optically thin wind over the remainder of the star. A striking similarity of [FeVII]6087 and Raman 6825 profiles at/after the dilution of the disk suggested their origin within the interaction zone where the winds from the binary components collide.

Light Variations of the Anomalous Central Star of Planetary Nebula Sh 2-71

We present an analysis of light variations in UBVRI of the anomalous object in the center of planetary nebula Sh 2-71. We refined the linear ephemeris of the light maxima to JD{max} = 2449862.0 + 68.101 (E-96), but also identified long-term, obviously non-periodic variations. The latter manifest themselves in large O-C shifts, a variable profile of light curves (hereafter LC) and changes in the mean brightness of the object. Our spectroscopic observations suggested the presence of a superdense nebula in the center of Sh 2-71.
