The Aharonov Bohm effect as a material phenomenon

An experiment to observe the Aharonov-Bohm effect is discussed. A solenoid which consists of a large number of point magnetic dipoles is considered as the source of a vector potential, which acts on a charged particle, and such potential has an electromagnetic field of zero strength in the region of a nonzero vector potential. A detailed microscopic analysis of the change in the quantum state phase of the entire system, namely, a particle and a set of dipoles, reveals the origin of the apparent nonlocality of the action of the vector potential, and shows the locality of the phase change mechanism. An analysis of an experiment with a solenoid shielded by a superconducting shell is given.

Quantum Measurements of Coupled Two-Level Systems

We propose an approach to measuring nonresonant coupled systems, which gives a parametrically smaller error than the conventional fast projective measurements. The approach takes into account that, due to the coupling, excitations are not entirely localized on individual systems. It combines high spectral selectivity of the detector with temporal resolution and uses the ideas of the quantum diffusion theory. The results bear on quantum computing with perpetually coupled qubits.

Quantitative Evaluation of Decoherence and Applications for Quantum-Dot Charge Qubits

We review results on evaluation of loss of information in quantum registers due to their interactions with the environment. It is demonstrated that an optimal measure of the level of quantum noise effects can be introduced via the maximal absolute eigenvalue norm of deviation of the density matrix of a quantum register from that of ideal, noiseless dynamics. For a semiconductor quantum dot charge qubits interacting with acoustic phonons, explicit expressions for this measure are derived. For a broad class of environmental modes, this measure is shown to have the property that for small levels of quantum noise it is additive and scales linearly with the size of the quantum register.

Error Correction and Digitalization Concepts in Biochemical Computing

We offer a theoretical design of new systems that show promise for digital biochemical computing, including realizations of error correction by utilizing redundancy, as well as signal rectification. The approach includes information processing using encoded DNA sequences, DNAzyme biocatalyzed reactions and the use of DNA-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles. Digital XOR and NAND logic gates and copying (fanout) are designed using the same components.

Quantitative Treatment of Decoherence

We outline different approaches to define and quantify decoherence. We argue that a measure based on a properly defined norm of deviation of the density matrix is appropriate for quantifying decoherence in quantum registers. For a semiconductor double quantum dot qubit, evaluation of this measure is reviewed. For a general class of decoherence processes, including those occurring in semiconductor qubits, we argue that this measure is additive: It scales linearly with the number of qubits.

Collective Decoherence of Nuclear Spin Clusters

The problem of dipole-dipole decoherence of nuclear spins is considered for strongly entangled spin cluster. Our results show that its dynamics can be described as the decoherence due to interaction with a composite bath consisting of fully correlated and uncorrelated parts. The correlated term causes the slower decay of coherence at larger times. The decoherence rate scales up as a square root of the number of spins giving the linear scaling of the resulting error. Our theory is consistent with recent experiment reported in decoherence of correlated spin clusters.

Decoherence Rate of Semiconductor Charge Qubit Coupled to Acoustic Phonon Reservoir

We analyze decoherence of an electron in a double-dot due to the interaction with acoustic phonons. For large tunneling rates between the quantum dots, the main contribution to decoherence comes from the phonon emission relaxation processes, while for small tunneling rates, the virtual-phonon, dephasing processes dominate. Our results show that in common semiconductors, such as Si and GaAs, the latter mechanism determines the upper limit for the double-dot charge qubit performance measure.

Relaxation and Zeno effect in qubit measurements

We consider a qubit interacting with its environment and continuously monitored by a detector represented by a point contact. Bloch-type equations describing the entire system of the qubit, the environment and the detector are derived. Using these equations we evaluate the detector current and its noise spectrum in terms of the decoherence and relaxation rates of the qubit. Simple expressions are obtained that show how these quantities can be accurately measured. We demonstrate that due to interaction with the environment, the measurement can never localize a qubit even for infinite decoherence rate.

Non-ideality of quantum operations with the electron spin of a 31P donor in a Si crystal due to interaction with a nuclear spin system

We examine a 31P donor electron spin in a Si crystal to be used for the purposes of quantum computation. The interaction with an uncontrolled system of 29Si nuclear spins influences the electron spin dynamics appreciably. The hyperfine field at the 29Si nuclei positions is non-collinear with the external magnetic field. Quantum operations with the electron wave function, i.e. using magnetic field pulses or electrical gates, change the orientation of hyperfine field and disturb the nuclear spin system. This disturbance produces a deviation of the electron spin qubit from an ideal state, at a short time scale in comparison with the nuclear spin diffusion time. For H_ext=9 T, the estimated error rate is comparable to the threshold value required by the quantum error correction algorithms. The rate is lower at higher external magnetic fields.

Interference effects in resonant magneto-transport

We study non-equilibrium magneto-transport through a single electron transistor or an impurity. We find that due to spin-flip transitions, generated by the spin-orbit interaction, the spectral density of the tunneling current fluctuations develops a distinct peak at the frequency of Zeeman splitting. This mechanism explains modulation in the tunneling current at the Larmor frequency observed in scanning tunneling microscope (STM) experiments and can be utilized as a detector for single spin measurement.

Polynomial procedure of avoiding multiqubit errors arising due to qubit-qubit interaction

Recently proposed implementations of quantum computer suffer from unavoidable interaction between quantum bits depending upon data being written in them. Novel procedure of avoiding multiqubit errors arising due to uncontrollable qubit-qubit interaction by using addititonal intermediate qubits is proposed. It is shown that the scheme requires only polynomial increase in number of qubits and algorithmic steps.

Novel coherent quantum bit using spatial quantization levels in semiconductor quantum dot

As basic elements of the quantum computer - quantum bits (qubits) we offer semiconductor quantum dots containing one electron each and consisting each of two tunnel-connected parts. The numerical solution of a Schroedinger equation with the account of Coulomb field of adjacent electrons shows, that in such structures the realization of a full set of basic logic operations which are necessary for fulfillment of quantum computations is possible. Durations of one- and two-qubit operations versus qubit geometry are obtained. Decoherence rates due to spontaneous emission of phonons and acoustic phonons (both piezoelectric and deformation) are evaluated. Analysis of these rates shows the offered qubit to be coherent enough to perform error correction procedures.
