First measurement of neutron capture multiplicity in neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasi-elastic-like interactions using an accelerator neutrino beam

We report the first measurement of neutron capture multiplicity in neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasi-elastic-like interactions at the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande detector using the T2K neutrino beam, which has a peak energy of about 0.6 GeV. A total of 30 neutral-current quasi-elastic-like event candidates were selected from T2K data corresponding to an exposure of $1.76\times10^{20}$ protons on target. The $γ$ ray signals resulting from neutron captures were identified using a neural network. The flux-averaged mean neutron capture multiplicity was measured to be $1.37\pm0.33\text{ (stat.)}$$^{+0.17}_{-0.27}\text{ (syst.)}$, which is compatible within $2.3\,σ$ than predictions obtained using our nominal simulation. We discuss potential sources of systematic uncertainty in the prediction and demonstrate that a significant portion of this discrepancy arises from the modeling of hadron-nucleus interactions in the detector medium.

Observation of an Altered $a_{0}(980)$ Line-shape in $D^{+} \rightarrow π^{+}ηη$ due to the Triangle Loop Rescattering Effect

Using 20.3~${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data taken with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy 3.773~GeV, we report the first amplitude analysis of the hadronic decay $D^{+} \rightarrow π^{+}ηη$. The intermediate process $D^{+} \to a_{0}(980)^{+}η, a_{0}(980)^{+} \to π^{+}η$ is observed and is found to be the only component and its branching fraction is measured to be $(3.67\pm0.12_{\mathrm{stat.}}\pm 0.06_{\mathrm{syst.}})\times 10^{-3}$. Unlike the $a_{0}(980)$ line-shape observed in the decays of charmed mesons to $a_{0}(980)π$ and in the decay $D^{0} \to a_{0}(980)^{-}e^{+}ν_{e}$, where the low-mass side of the $a_0(980)$ is wider than the high-mass side, the $a_{0}(980)$ line-shape in $D^{+} \to a_{0}(980)^{+}η$ is found to be significantly altered, with the high-mass side being wider than the low-mass side. We establish that the $a_0(980)$ line-shape arises from the triangle loop rescattering of $D^+ \to \bar{K}_0^*(1430)^0K^+ \to a_0(980)^+ η$ and $D^+ \to K_0^*(1430)^+\bar{K}^0 \to a_0(980)^+ η$ with a significance of 5.8$σ$. This is the first experimental confirmation of the triangle loop rescattering effect.

First Measurement of the Electron Neutrino Charged-Current Pion Production Cross Section on Carbon with the T2K Near Detector

The T2K Collaboration presents the first measurement of electron neutrino-induced charged-current pion production on carbon in a restricted kinematical phase space. This is performed using data from the 2.5$^°$ off-axis near detector, ND280. The differential cross sections with respect to the outgoing electron and pion kinematics, in addition to the total flux-integrated cross section, are obtained. Comparisons between the measured and predicted cross section results using the Neut, Genie and NuWro Monte Carlo event generators are presented. The measured total flux-integrated cross section is [2.52 $\pm$ 0.52 (stat) $\pm$ 0.30 (sys)] x $10^{-39}$ cm$^2$ nucleon$^{-1}$, which is lower than the event generator predictions.

Search for the lepton number violation decay $ω\to π^+ π^+ e^-e^- +c.c.$

The lepton number violation decay $ω\to π^+ π^+ e^-e^- +c.c.$ is searched for via $J/ψ\to ωη$ using a data sample of $(1.0087 \pm 0.0044) \times 10^{10}$ $J/ψ$ events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction of $ω\to π^+ π^+ e^-e^- +c.c.$ at the 90\% confidence level is determined for the first time to be $2.8 \times 10^{-6}$.

Detection of two TeV gamma-ray outbursts from NGC 1275 by LHAASO

The Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) is one of the components of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) and can monitor any sources over two-thirds of the sky for up to 7 hours per day with >98\% duty cycle. In this work, we report the detection of two outbursts of the Fanaroff-Riley I radio galaxy NGC 1275 that were detected by LHAASO-WCDA between November 2022 and January 2023 with statistical significance of 5.2~$σ$ and 8.3~$σ$. The observed spectral energy distribution in the range from 500 GeV to 3 TeV is fitted by a power-law with a best-fit spectral index of $α=-3.37\pm0.52$ and $-3.35\pm0.29$, respectively. The outburst flux above 0.5~TeV was ($4.55\pm 4.21)\times~10^{-11}~\rm cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$ and ($3.45\pm 1.78)\times~10^{-11}~\rm cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$, corresponding to 60\%, 45\% of Crab Nebula flux. Variation analysis reveals the variability time-scale of days at the TeV energy band. A simple test by one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model reproduces the data in the gamma-ray band well.

Search for $1^{-+}$ charmonium-like hybrid via $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow γη^{(\prime)} η_{c}$ at center-of-mass energies between 4.258 and 4.681 GeV

Using $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.6 fb$^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.258 and 4.681 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we search for the $1^{- +}$ charmonium-like hybrid via $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowγηη_{c}$ and $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowγη^{\prime}η_{c}$ decays for the first time. No significant signal is observed and the upper limits on the Born cross sections for both processes are set at the 90% confidence level.

Updated model-independent measurement of the strong-phase differences between $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0 \to K^{0}_{S/L}π^+π^-$ decays

The strong-phase differences between $D^0\to K_{S/L}^0π^+π^-$ and $\bar{D}^0\to K_{S/L}^0π^+π^-$ decays are one of the most important inputs in measuring the $C\!P$ violating angle $γ$ via $B^- \to D K^-$ decays. They also play a key role in studies of charm mixing and indirect $C\!P$ violation. In this paper, the strong-phase differences are determined in a model-independent way with quantum-correlated $D^0$-$\bar{D}^0$ decays from 7.93 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data at $\sqrt{s}$=3.773 GeV by the BESIII experiment. These results are the most precise to date and are expected to significantly reduce associated uncertainties in determining the $C\!P$ violating angle $γ$ and related charm mixing parameters.

Precise measurement of the form factors in $D^0\rightarrow K^*(892)^-μ^+ν_μ$ and test of lepton universality with $D^0\rightarrow K^*(892)^-\ell^+ν_{\ell}$ decays

We report a study of the semileptonic decay $D^0 \rightarrow \bar{K}^0π^-μ^+ν_μ$ based on a sample of $7.9~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The branching fraction of the decay is measured for the first time to be $\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow \bar{K}^0π^-μ^+ν_μ) = (1.373 \pm 0.020_{\rm stat} \pm 0.023_{\rm syst})\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Based on the investigation of the decay dynamics, we find that the decay is dominated by the $K^{*}(892)^-$ resonance with the branching fraction measured to be $\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow K^{*}(892)^-μ^+ν_μ) = (1.948 \pm 0.033_{\rm stat} \pm 0.036_{\rm syst})\%$. We also determine the hadronic form factors for the $D^0\rightarrow K^{*}(892)^-μ^+ν_μ$ decay to be $r_{V} = V(0)/A_1(0) = 1.46 \pm 0.11_{\rm stat} \pm 0.04_{\rm syst}$, $r_{2} = A_2(0)/A_1(0) = 0.71 \pm 0.08_{\rm stat} \pm 0.03_{\rm syst}$, and $A_1(0)=0.609 \pm 0.008_{\rm stat} \pm 0.008_{\rm syst}$, where $V(0)$ is the vector form factor and $A_{1,2}(0)$ are the axial form factors evaluated at $q^2=0$. The $A_1(0)$ is measured for the first time in $D^0\rightarrow K^{*}(892)^-μ^+ν_μ$ decay. Averaging the form-factor parameters that we reported previously in $D^0\rightarrow K^*(892)^-(\rightarrow \bar{K}^0π^-)e^+ν_{e}$ and $D^0\rightarrow K^*(892)^-(\rightarrow K^-π^0)μ^+ν_μ$ decays, we obtain $r_{V}=1.456\pm0.040_{\rm stat}\pm0.016_{\rm syst}$, $r_{2}=0.715\pm0.031_{\rm stat}\pm0.014_{\rm stat}$, and $A_1(0)=0.614\pm0.005_{\rm stat}\pm0.004_{\rm syst}$. This is the most precise determination of the form-factor parameters to date measured in $D\rightarrow K^*(892)$ transition, which provide the most stringent test on various theoretical models.

Observation of the decay $ψ(3686)\rightarrow Σ^{0}\barΣ^{0}ω$

Using a dataset of $(27.12\pm 0.14)\times 10^{8}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, we report the first observation of the decay $ψ(3686)\toΣ^{0}\barΣ^{0}ω$ with a statistical significance of 8.9$σ$. The measured branching fraction is $(1.24 \pm 0.16_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 0.11_{\textrm{sys}}) \times 10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Additionally, we investigate potential intermediate states in the invariant mass distributions of $Σ^{0}ω$, $\barΣ^{0}ω$ and $Σ^{0}\barΣ^{0}$. A hint of a resonance is observed in the invariant mass distribution of $M_{Σ^{0}(\barΣ^{0})ω}$, located around 2.06 GeV/$c^2$, with a significance of 2.5$σ$.

Broadband $γ$-ray spectrum of supernova remnant Cassiopeia A

The core-collapse supernova remnant (SNR) Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is one of the brightest galactic radio sources with an angular radius of $\sim$ 2.5 $\arcmin$. Although no extension of this source has been detected in the $γ$-ray band, using more than 1000 days of LHAASO data above $\sim 0.8$ TeV, we find that its spectrum is significantly softer than those obtained with Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) and its flux near $\sim 1$ TeV is about two times higher. In combination with analyses of more than 16 years of \textit{Fermi}-LAT data covering $0.1 \, \mathrm{GeV} - 1 \, \mathrm{TeV}$, we find that the spectrum above 30 GeV deviates significantly from a single power-law, and is best described by a smoothly broken power-law with a spectral index of $1.90 \pm 0.15_\mathrm{stat}$ ($3.41 \pm 0.19_\mathrm{stat}$) below (above) a break energy of $0.63 \pm 0.21_\mathrm{stat} \, \mathrm{TeV}$. Given differences in the angular resolution of LHAASO-WCDA and IACTs, TeV $γ$-ray emission detected with LHAASO may have a significant contribution from regions surrounding the SNR illuminated by particles accelerated earlier, which, however, are treated as background by IACTs. Detailed modelling can be used to constrain acceleration processes of TeV particles in the early stage of SNR evolution.

Hadronic cross section measurements with the DAMPE space mission using 20GeV-10TeV cosmic-ray protons and $^4$He

Precise direct cosmic-ray (CR) measurements provide an important probe to study the energetic particle sources in our Galaxy, and the interstellar environment through which these particles propagate. Uncertainties on hadronic models, ion-nucleon cross sections in particular, are currently the limiting factor towards obtaining more accurate CR ion flux measurements with calorimetric space-based experiments. We present an energy-dependent measurement of the inelastic cross section of protons and helium-4 nuclei (alpha particles) on a Bi$_4$Ge$_3$O$_{12}$ target, using 88 months of data collected by the DAMPE space mission. The kinetic energy range per nucleon of the measurement points ranges from 18 GeV to 9 TeV for protons, and from 5 GeV/n to 3 TeV/n for helium-4 nuclei. Our results lead to a significant improvement of the CR flux normalisation. In the case of helium-4, these results correspond to the first cross section measurements on a heavy target material at energies above 10 GeV/n.

Observation of a spectral hardening in cosmic ray boron spectrum with the DAMPE space mission

Secondary cosmic ray fluxes are important probes of the propagation and interaction of high-energy particles in the Galaxy. Recent measurements of primary and secondary cosmic ray nuclei have revealed unexpected spectral features that demand a deeper understanding. In this work we report the direct measurement of the cosmic ray boron spectrum from 10 GeV/n to 8 TeV/n with eight years of data collected by the Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) mission. The measured spectrum shows an evident hardening at $182\pm24$ GeV/n with a spectral power index of $γ_1 = 3.02 \pm 0.01$ before the break and an index change of $Δγ= 0.31 \pm 0.05$ after the break. A simple power law model is disfavored at a confidence level of 8$σ$. Compared with the hardenings measured in the DAMPE proton and helium spectra, the secondary boron spectrum hardens roughly twice as much as these primaries, which is consistent with a propagation related mechanism to interpret the spectral hardenings of cosmic rays observed at hundreds of GeV/n.

LHAASO detection of very-high-energy gamma-ray emission surrounding PSR J0248+6021

We report the detection of an extended very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray source coincident with the location of middle-aged (62.4~\rm kyr) pulsar PSR J0248+6021, by using the LHAASO-WCDA data of live 796 days and LHAASO-KM2A data of live 1216 days. A significant excess of \gray induced showers is observed both by WCDA in energy bands of 1-25~\rm TeV and KM2A in energy bands of $>$ 25~\rm TeV with 7.3 $σ$ and 13.5 $σ$, respectively. The best-fit position derived through WCDA data is R.A. = 42.06$^\circ \pm$ 0.12$^\circ$ and Dec. = 60.24$^\circ \pm $ 0.13$^\circ$ with an extension of 0.69$^\circ\pm$0.15$^\circ$ and that of the KM2A data is R.A.= 42.29$^\circ \pm $ 0.13$^\circ$ and Dec. = 60.38$^\circ \pm$ 0.07$^\circ$ with an extension of 0.37$^\circ\pm$0.07$^\circ$. No clear extended multiwavelength counterpart of this LHAASO source has been found from the radio band to the GeV band. The most plausible explanation of the VHE \gray emission is the inverse Compton process of highly relativistic electrons and positrons injected by the pulsar. These electrons/positrons are hypothesized to be either confined within the pulsar wind nebula or to have already escaped into the interstellar medium, forming a pulsar halo.

High Performance Operation of a Direct-Current and Superconducting Radio-Frequency Combined Photocathode Gun

Superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) guns are promising candidates to deliver high brightness continuous-wave (CW) electron beams for new generations of coherent linac light sources, ultrafast electron diffractions, MeV pulsed beam applications, etc. To solve the compatibility problem of semiconductor photocathodes, a hybrid gun combining a direct-current gap and an SRF cavity has been developed. The gun, employing K2CsSb photocathodes driven by a green laser, has been brought into stable CW operation with a dark current below 100 pA, delivering electron beams at an energy gain of 2.4 MeV, an electron bunch charge of 100 pC, and a repetition rate of 1 MHz. A normalized beam emittance of 0.54 mm-mrad has been achieved at the bunch charge of 100 pC and peak current of about 6 A. CW operation at 81.25 MHz repetition rate has also been tested with the maximum average beam current reaching 3 mA.

THz Second and Third Harmonic Generation in PdCoO$_2$ Thin Films

Terahertz high harmonic generation (THz HHG) is a common property of nonlinear systems. Recently it has been used to investigate fundamental principles that govern transport and nonlinear dynamics in novel quantum materials like graphene, Dirac semimetals or high-temperature superconductors. Here, we report on the observation of exceptionally large THz second harmonic and third harmonic generation in thin films of the highly conducting delafossite PdCoO$_2$ down to low temperatures. The growth of this material on offcut substrate allows for a significant enhancement of the third harmonic intensity compared to ordinary $c$-axis grown thin films. Furthermore, it appears to be a necessity for the observation of THz second harmonic generation. We model the temperature dependence of the third harmonic generation by means of Boltzmann transport theory and provide an explanation for the second harmonic generation by comparing the system to the electric field induced second harmonic generation. The present investigation thus provides an important contribution to the ongoing discussion of low temperature origins of THz HHG and might serve as a new platform for THz high harmonic applications.

Measurement of the cosmic p+He energy spectrum from 50 GeV to 0.5 PeV with the DAMPE space mission

Recent observations of the light component of the cosmic-ray spectrum have revealed unexpected features that motivate further and more precise measurements up to the highest energies. The Dark Matter Particle Explorer is a satellite-based cosmic-ray experiment that has been operational since December 2015, continuously collecting data on high-energy cosmic particles with very good statistics, energy resolution, and particle identification capabilities. In this work, the latest measurements of the energy spectrum of proton+helium in the energy range from 46 GeV to 464 TeV are presented. Among the most distinctive features of the spectrum, a spectral hardening at 600 GeV has been observed, along with a softening at 29 TeV measured with a 6.6σ significance. Moreover, the detector features and the analysis approach allowed for the extension of the spectral measurement up to the sub-PeV region. Even if with small statistical significance due to the low number of events, data suggest a new spectral hardening at about 150 TeV.

Data quality control system and long-term performance monitor of the LHAASO-KM2A

The KM2A is the largest sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). It consists of 5216 electromagnetic particle detectors (EDs) and 1188 muon detectors (MDs). The data recorded by the EDs and MDs are used to reconstruct primary information of cosmic ray and gamma-ray showers. This information is used for physical analysis in gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics. To ensure the reliability of the LHAASO-KM2A data, a three-level quality control system has been established. It is used to monitor the status of detector units, stability of reconstructed parameters and the performance of the array based on observations of the Crab Nebula and Moon shadow. This paper will introduce the control system and its application on the LHAASO-KM2A data collected from August 2021 to July 2023. During this period, the pointing and angular resolution of the array were stable. From the observations of the Moon shadow and Crab Nebula, the results achieved using the two methods are consistent with each other. According to the observation of the Crab Nebula at energies from 25 TeV to 100 TeV, the time averaged pointing errors are estimated to be $-0.003^{\circ} \pm 0.005^{\circ}$ and $0.001^{\circ} \pm 0.006^{\circ}$ in the R.A. and Dec directions, respectively.

Constraints on Ultra Heavy Dark Matter Properties from Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies with LHAASO Observations

In this work we try to search for signals generated by ultra-heavy dark matter at the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) data. We look for possible gamma-ray by dark matter annihilation or decay from 16 dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the field of view of LHAASO. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are among the most promising targets for indirect detection of dark matter which have low fluxes of astrophysical $γ$-ray background while large amount of dark matter. By analyzing more than 700 days observational data at LHAASO, no significant dark matter signal from 1 TeV to 1 EeV is detected. Accordingly we derive the most stringent constraints on the ultra-heavy dark matter annihilation cross-section up to EeV. The constraints on the lifetime of dark matter in decay mode are also derived.
