Imaginary noise and parity conservation in the reaction A+A <--> 0

The master equation for the reversible reaction A+A <--> 0 is considered in Poisson representation, where it is equivalent to a Langevin equation with imaginary noise for a complex stochastic variable ϕ. Such Langevin equations appear quite generally in field-theoretic treatments of reaction-diffusion problems. For this example we study the probability flow in the complex ϕplane both analytically and by simulation. We show that this flow has various curious features that must be expected to occur similarly in other Langevin equations associated with reaction-diffusion problems.

Ballistic aggregation: a solvable model of irreversible many particles dynamics

The adhesive dynamics of a one-dimensional aggregating gas of point particles is rigorously described. The infinite hierarchy of kinetic equations for the distributions of clusters of nearest neighbours is shown to be equivalent to a system of two coupled equations for a large class of initial conditions. The solution to these nonlinear equations is found by a direct construction of the relevant probability distributions in the limit of a continuous initial mass distribution. We show that those limiting distributions are identical to those of the statistics of shocks in the Burgers turbulence. The analysis relies on a mapping on a Brownian motion problem with parabolic constraints.

Exact statistical properties of the Burgers equation

The one dimensional Burgers equation in the inviscid limit with white noise initial condition is revisited. The one- and two-point distributions of the Burgers field as well as the related distributions of shocks are obtained in closed analytical forms. In particular, the large distance behavior of spatial correlations of the field is determined. Since higher order distributions factorize in terms of the one and two points functions, our analysis provides an explicit and complete statistical description of this problem.

On the adiabatic properties of a stochastic adiabatic wall: Evolution, stationary non-equilibrium, and equilibrium states

The time evolution of the adiabatic piston problem and the consequences of its stochastic motion are investigated. The model is a one dimensional piston of mass $M$ separating two ideal fluids made of point particles with mass $m\ll M$. For infinite systems it is shown that the piston evolves very rapidly toward a stationary nonequilibrium state with non zero average velocity even if the pressures are equal but the temperatures different on both sides of the piston. For finite system it is shown that the evolution takes place in two stages: first the system evolves rather rapidly and adiabatically toward a metastable state where the pressures are equal but the temperatures different; then the evolution proceeds extremely slowly toward the equilibrium state where both the pressures and the temperatures are equal. Numerical simulations of the model are presented. The results of the microscopical approach, the thermodynamical equations and the simulations are shown to be qualitatively in good agreement.

Exact solution of the one-dimensional ballistic aggregation

An exact expression for the mass distribution $ρ(M,t)$ of the ballistic aggregation model in one dimension is derived in the long time regime. It is shown that it obeys scaling $ρ(M,t)=t^{-4/3}F(M/t^{2/3})$ with a scaling function $F(z)\sim z^{-1/2}$ for $z\ll 1$ and $F(z)\sim \exp(-z^3/12)$ for $z\gg 1$. Relevance of these results to Burgers turbulence is discussed.

Fixation in a cyclic Lotka-Volterra model

We study a cyclic Lotka-Volterra model of N interacting species populating a d-dimensional lattice. In the realm of a Kirkwood approximation, a critical number of species N_c(d) above which the system fixates is determined analytically. We find N_c=5,14,23 in dimensions d=1,2,3, in remarkably good agreement with simulation results in two dimensions.

Alternating Kinetics of Annihilating Random Walks Near a Free Interface

The kinetics of annihilating random walks in one dimension, with the half-line x>0 initially filled, is investigated. The survival probability of the nth particle from the interface exhibits power-law decay, S_n(t)~t^{-alpha_n}, with alpha_n approximately equal to 0.225 for n=1 and all odd values of n; for all n even, a faster decay with alpha_n approximately equal to 0.865 is observed. From consideration of the eventual survival probability in a finite cluster of particles, the rigorous bound alpha_1<1/4 is derived, while a heuristic argument gives alpha_1 approximately equal to 3 sqrt{3}/8 = 0.2067.... Numerically, this latter value appears to be a stringent lower bound for alpha_1. The average position of the first particle moves to the right approximately as 1.7 t^{1/2}, with a relatively sharp and asymmetric probability distribution.

Aging and its Distribution in Coarsening Processes

We investigate the age distribution function P(tau,t) in prototypical one-dimensional coarsening processes. Here P(tau,t) is the probability density that in a time interval (0,t) a given site was last crossed by an interface in the coarsening process at time tau. We determine P(tau,t) analytically for two cases, the (deterministic) two-velocity ballistic annihilation process, and the (stochastic) infinite-state Potts model with zero temperature Glauber dynamics. Surprisingly, we find that in the scaling limit, P(tau,t) is identical for these two models. We also show that the average age, i. e., the average time since a site was last visited by an interface, grows linearly with the observation time t. This latter property is also found in the one-dimensional Ising model with zero temperature Glauber dynamics. We also discuss briefly the age distribution in dimension d greater than or equal to 2.

Deterministic Soluble Model of Coarsening

We investigate a 3-phase deterministic one-dimensional phase ordering model in which interfaces move ballistically and annihilate upon colliding. We determine analytically the autocorrelation function A(t). This is done by computing generalized first-passage type probabilities P_n(t) which measure the fraction of space crossed by exactly n interfaces during the time interval (0,t), and then expressing the autocorrelation function via P_n's. We further reveal the spatial structure of the system by analyzing the domain size distribution.

Spatial organization in cyclic Lotka-Volterra systems

We study the evolution of a system of $N$ interacting species which mimics the dynamics of a cyclic food chain. On a one-dimensional lattice with N<5 species, spatial inhomogeneities develop spontaneously in initially homogeneous systems. The arising spatial patterns form a mosaic of single-species domains with algebraically growing size, $\ell(t)\sim t^α$, where $α=3/4$ (1/2) and 1/3 for N=3 with sequential (parallel) dynamics and N=4, respectively. The domain distribution also exhibits a self-similar spatial structure which is characterized by an additional length scale, ${\cal L}(t)\sim t^β$, with $β=1$ and 2/3 for N=3 and 4, respectively. For $N\geq 5$, the system quickly reaches a frozen state with non interacting neighboring species. We investigate the time distribution of the number of mutations of a site using scaling arguments as well as an exact solution for N=3. Some possible extensions of the system are analyzed.

Coarsening and persistence in the voter model

We investigate coarsening and persistence in the voter model by introducing the quantity $P_n(t)$, defined as the fraction of voters who changed their opinion n times up to time t. We show that $P_n(t)$ exhibits scaling behavior that strongly depends on the dimension as well as on the initial opinion concentrations. Exact results are obtained for the average number of opinion changes, , and the autocorrelation function, $A(t)\equiv \sum (-1)^n P_n\sim t^{-d/2}$ in arbitrary dimension d. These exact results are complemented by a mean-field theory, heuristic arguments and numerical simulations. For dimensions d>2, the system does not coarsen, and the opinion changes follow a nearly Poissonian distribution, in agreement with mean-field theory. For dimensions d<=2, the distribution is given by a different scaling form, which is characterized by nontrivial scaling exponents. For unequal opinion concentrations, an unusual situation occurs where different scaling functions correspond to the majority and the minority, as well as for even and odd n.

Exact Results for Kinetics of Catalytic Reactions

The kinetics of an irreversible catalytic reaction on substrate of arbitrary dimension is examined. In the limit of infinitesimal reaction rate (reaction-controlled limit), we solve the dimer-dimer surface reaction model (or voter model) exactly in arbitrary dimension $D$. The density of reactive interfaces is found to exhibit a power law decay for $D<2$ and a slow logarithmic decay in two dimensions. We discuss the relevance of these results for the monomer-monomer surface reaction model.

Extremal Properties of Random Systems

We find that the probability distribution for the largest intervals $p(l)$ exhibits universal properties for different systems including random walk and random cutting models. In particular, $p(l)$ has an infinite set of singularities at $l=1/k$ with $k=2,3,\ldots$ which become weaker and weaker as $k \to \infty$; additionally, $p(l)$ has an essential singularity at $l=0$. These properties are found also in many dimensional situation.

Heterogeneous Catalysis on a Disordered Surface

We introduce a simple model of heterogeneous catalysis on a disordered surface which consists of two types of randomly distributed sites with different adsorption rates. Disorder can create a reactive steady state in situations where the same model on a homogeneous surface exhibits trivial kinetics with no steady state. A rich variety of kinetic behaviors occur for the adsorbate concentrations and catalytic reaction rate as a function of model parameters.
