Search for the rare decay $K^+\toμ^+ν\barνν$

Evidence of the $K^+\toμ^+ν\barνν$ decay was searched for using E949 experimental data with an exposure of $1.70\times 10^{12}$ stopped kaons. The data sample is dominated by the backgrond process $K^+\toμ^+ν_μγ$. An upper limit on the decay rate $Γ(K^+\toμ^+ν\barνν)< 2.4\times 10^{-6}Γ(K^+\to all)$ at 90% confidence level was set assuming the Standard Model muon spectrum. The data are presented in such a way as to allow calculation of rates for any assumed $μ^+$ spectrum.

The transverse momentum dependence of charged kaon Bose-Einstein correlations in the SELEX experiment

We report on the measurement of the one-dimensional charged kaon correlation functions using 600~GeV/{\it c} $Σ^-$, $π^-$ and 540~GeV/{\it c} $p$ beams from the SELEX~(E781) experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. $K^{\pm}K^{\pm}$ correlation functions are studied for three transverse pair momentum, $k_T$, ranges and parameterized by a Gaussian form. The emission source radii, $R$, and the correlation strength, $λ$, are extracted. The analysis shows a decrease of the source radii with increasing kaon transverse pair momentum for all beam types.

Search for heavy neutrinos in $K^+\toμ^+ν_H$ decays

Evidence of a heavy neutrino, $ν_H$, in the $K^+\toμ^+ν_H$ decays was sought using the E949 experimental data with an exposure of $1.70\times 10^{12}$ stopped kaons. With the major background from the radiative $K^+\toμ^+ν_μγ$ decay understood and suppressed, upper limits (90% C.L.) on the neutrino mixing matrix element between muon and heavy neutrino, $|U_{μH}|^2$, were set at the level of $10^{-7}$ to $10^{-9}$ for the heavy neutrino mass region 175 to 300 MeV/$c^2$.

Study of the decay K+ => pi+,nu,nubar in the momentum region 140<Ppi<199 MeV/c

Experiment E949 at Brookhaven National Laboratory has observed three new events consistent with the decay K+ => pi+,nu,nubar in the pion momentum region 140 < P_pi < 199 MeV/c in an exposure of 1.71e12 stopped kaons with an estimated total background of 0.93+-0.17(stat.)+0.32-0.24(syst.) events. This brings the total number of observed K+ => pi+,nu,nubar events to seven. Combining this observation with previous results, assuming the pion spectrum predicted by the standard model, results in a branching ratio of (1.73+1.15-1.05)e-10. An interpretation of the results for alternative models of the decay K^ => pi+,nothing is also presented.

On the nature of new baryon state X(2000) observed in the experiments with the SPHINX spectrometer

In the experiment with the SPHINX spectrometer in 1995-99 a new baryon state X(2000) -> Sigma^0K^+ was observed in the proton diffractive reactions p + N(C) -> Sigma^0K^+ + N(C). The main parameters of X(2000)^+ baryon are M = 1986 +- 6 MeV, Gamma = 98 +- 21 MeV. Unusual features of massive X(2000) state (narrow decay width Gamma/M simeq 0.05, anomalously large branching ratio with strange particle emission) make it serious candidate for cryptoexotic pentaquark baryon with hidden strangeness. New data on the SPHINX with by an order of magnitude enlarge statistics are in agreement with previous data and are supported our conclusions. We propose further studies X(2000) baryon production in the meson reactions with baryon exchange: pi^{+-} + p -> X(2000)^+ + pi^{+-} OZI - forbidden suppressed reaction for the state |qqqsbar{s}>) and K^{+-} + p -> X(2000)^+ + K^{+-} (OZI - allowed reaction). If the value of R=BR[pi^{+-} + p -> X(2000)^+ + pi^{+-}]/BR[K^{+-}+p -> X(2000)^+ + K^{+-}]<<1 it will be the crucial argument in favor of X(2000)= |qqqsbar{s}>) structure. These experiments may be done on IHEP separated kaon beam with OKA spectrometer.

Is it still worth searching for lepton flavor violation in rare kaon decays?

Prospective searches for lepton flavor violation (LFV) in rare kaon decays at the existing and future intermediate-energy accelerators are considered. The proposed studies are complementary to LFV searches in muon-decay experiments and offer a unique opportunity to probe models with approximately conserved fermion-generation quantum number with sensitivity superior to that in other processes. Consequently, new searches for LFV in kaon decays are an important and independent part of the general program of searches for lepton flavor violation in the final states with charged leptons.

Measurement of the radiative decay width Γ[Λ(1520) --> Λγ] with the SPHINX spectrometer

The radiative decay Λ(1520) --> Λγwas measured directly in the study of exclusive diffractive-like reaction p + N --> Λ(1520) K^+ + N, Λ(1520) --> Λγwith the SPHINX spectrometer. The values of the branching and partial width of this radiative decay were obtained: BR[Λ(1520) --> Λγ] = (1.02+/-0.21(stat)+/-0.15(syst))x10^{-2} and Γ[Λ(1520) --> Λγ] = 159+/-33(stat)+/-26(syst) keV.

Search for Theta(1540)^+ in exclusive proton-induced reaction p+C(N) \to Theta^+ \bar{K}^0 + C(N) at the energy of 70 GeV

A search for narrow Theta(1540)^+, a candidate for pentaquark baryon with positive strangeness, has been performed in an exclusive proton-induced reaction p+C(N) \to Theta^+ \bar{K}^0 + C(N) on carbon nuclei or quasifree nucleons at E_{beam}=70 GeV (sqrt{s} = 11.5 GeV) studying nK^+, pK_S and pK_L decay channels of Theta(1540)^+ in four different final states of the Theta^+ \bar{K}^0 system. In order to assess the quality of the identification of the final states with neutron or K_L we reconstructed Lambda(1520)\to nK_S and phi\to K_LK_S decays in the calibration reactions p+C(N)\to Lambda(1520)K^+ + C(N) and p+C(N)\to pϕ+ C(N). We found no evidence for narrow pentaquark peak in any of the studied final states and decay channels. Assuming that the production characteristics of the Theta^+ \bar{K^0} system are not drastically different from those of the Lambda(1520)K^+ and pϕsystems, we established upper limits on the cross section ratios sigma(Theta^+\bar{K}^0)/sigma(Lambda(1520)K^+) < 0.02 and sigma(Theta^+\bar{K}^0)/sigma(pϕ) < 0.15 at 90% CL and a preliminary upper limit for the forward hemisphere cross section sigma(Theta^+\bar{K}^0) < 30 nb/nucleon.

Estimate of B(K -> pi nu nubar) from Standard Model fits to lambda_t

We estimate B(K -> pi nu nubar) in the context of the Standard Model by fitting for lambda_t = Vtd x V*ts of the `kaon unitarity triangle' relation. We fit data from epsilon_K, the CP-violating parameter describing K-mixing, and a_{psi K}, the CP-violating asymmetry in B -> J/psi K decays. Our estimate is independent of the CKM matrix element Vcb and of the ratio of Bs to Bd mixing frequencies. The measured value of B(K+ -> pi+ nu nubar) can be compared both to this estimate and to predictions made from the ratio of B mixing frequencies.

The Search for Pentaquark Baryon with Hidden Strangeness

Evidences for new baryon states with mass >1.8 GeV were obtained in the experiments of the SPHINX Collaboration in studying hyperon-kaon mass spectra in several proton diffractive reactions. The main result of these experiments is the observation of X(2000)->SIGMA K state with unusual dynamical features (narrow width, anomalously large branching ratios for the decay channels with strange particle emission). The possibility of the interpretation of this state as cryptoexotic pentaquark baryon with hidden strangeness is discussed. The additional data which are supported the real existence of X(2000) baryon are also presented.

Study of the Primakoff Reactions at High Energy

In this talk the Coulomb production reactions at high energy are discussed as well as the study of electromagnetic properties of hadrons (mesons and hyperons) in these processes. The results of previous investigations are summed together with some recent data of SELEX(Fermilab) and SPHINX(IHEP) experiments.

Search for Exotic Baryons with Hidden Strangeness in the Experiments of the Sphinx Collaboration in Diffractive and Coulomb Production Processes

Experimental results of the SPHINX Collaboration on studying proton diffractive production processes are presented. Evidences for new baryon states with masses >1.8 GeV were obtained in hyperon-kaon effective mass spectra in several reactions. New data for the diffractive reaction p+N->[Sigma0 K+]+N at Ep=70 GeV were obtained with partially upgraded SPHINX setup. The data are in a good agreement with the results of our previous study of this reaction. In the mass spectrum M(Sigma0 K+) a structure at the threshold region with a mass about 1800 MeV and a distinct X(2000) peak with M=1989+/-6 MeV and Gamma=91+/-20 MeV are observed. Unusual features of the massive X(2000) state (narrow decay width, anomalously large branching ratio for the decay channel with strange particle emission) make it a serious candidate for a cryptoexotic pentaquark baryon with hidden strangeness |qqqs sbar>. We also present new results on the narrow threshold structure X(1810) with M=1807+/-7 MeV and Gamma=62+/-19 MeV which is produced in the region of very small pt**2<0.01 GeV**2. The possibility of the Coulomb production mechanism for X(1810) is discussed.

How to Search for Pentaquarks in High Energy Hadronic Interactions

The strange-anticharmed Pentaquark is a $uud\bar{c}s$ or $udd\bar{c}s$ five-quark baryon that is expected to be either a narrow resonance, or possibly even stable against strong and electromagnetic decay. We describe this hyperon here, its structure, binding energy and lifetime, resonance width, production mechanisms, production cross sections, and decay modes. We describe techniques to reduce backgrounds in search experiments and to optimize the conditions for Pentaquark observation. Possibilities for enhancing the signal over background in Pentaquark searches are investigated by examining predictions for detailed momentum and angular distributions in multiparticle final states. General model-independent predictions are presented as well as those from two models: a loosely bound $D_{s}^-N$ molecule and a strongly-bound five-quark system. Fermilab E791 data, currently being analyzed, may have marginal statistics for showing definitive signals. Future experiments in the spirit of the recent CHARM2000 workshop, such as FNAL E781 and CERN CHEOPS with $10^6-10^7$ reconstructed charmed baryon events, should have sensitivity to determine whether or not the Pentaquark exists.

Pentaquark Search with Energetic Hadron Beams

The strange-anticharmed Pentaquark is a uud(cbar)s or udd(cbar)s five-quark baryon that is expected to be either a narrow resonance, or possibly even stable against strong decay. We describe this hyperon here; its structure, binding energy and lifetime, resonance width, production mechanisms and decay modes. We estimate production cross sections, techniques to reduce backgrounds in search experiments, and how to optimize experiments to observe it. Possibilities for enhancing the signal over background in Pentaquark searches are investigated by examining predictions for detailed momentum and angular distributions in multiparticle final states. General model-independent predictions are presented as well as those from two models: a loosely bound Ds-N "deuteron" and a strongly-bound five-quark model. Fermilab E791 data, currently being analysed, may be marginal for showing definitive signals. Future experiments with more than 10^5 reconstructed charmed baryon events should have sensitivity to determine whether or not the Pentaquark exists.
