Ultra-fast prompt gamma detection in single proton counting regime for range monitoring in particle therapy

In order to fully exploit the ballistic potential of particle therapy, we propose an online range monitoring concept based on high-resolution Time-Of-Flight (TOF)-resolved Prompt Gamma (PG) detection in a single proton counting regime. In a proof of principle experiment, different types of monolithic scintillating gamma detectors are read in time coincidence with a diamond-based beam hodoscope, in order to build TOF spectra of PG generated in a heterogeneous target presenting an air cavity of variable thickness. Since the measurement was carried out at low beam currents ($<$ 1 proton/bunch) it was possible to reach excellent coincidence time resolutions, of the order of 100 ps ($σ$). Our goal is to detect possible deviations of the proton range with respect to treatment planning within a few intense irradiation spots at the beginning of the session and then carry on the treatment at standard beam currents. The measurements were limited to 10 mm proton range shift. A Monte Carlo simulation study reproducing the experiment has shown that a 3 mm shift can be detected at 2$σ$ by a single detector of $\sim 1.4 \times 10^{-3}$ absolute detection efficiency within a single irradiation spot ($\sim$10$^{8}$ protons) and an optimised experimental set-up.

Recent Results from Polycrystalline CVD Diamond Detectors

Diamond is a material in use at many nuclear and high energy facilities due to its inherent radiation tolerance and ease of use. We have characterized detectors based on chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond before and after proton irradiation. We present preliminary results of the spatial resolution of unirradiated and irradiated CVD diamond strip sensors. In addition, we measured the pulse height versus particle rate of unirradiated and irradiated polycrystalline CVD (pCVD) diamond pad detectors up to a particle flux of $20\,\mathrm{MHz/cm^2}$ and a fluence up to $4 \times 10^{15}\,n/\mathrm{cm^2}$.

NIKEL: Electronics and data acquisition for kilopixels kinetic inductance camera

A prototype of digital frequency multiplexing electronics allowing the real time monitoring of microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKIDs) arrays for mm-wave astronomy has been developed. Thanks to the frequency multiplexing, it can monitor simultaneously 400 pixels over a 500 MHz bandwidth and requires only two coaxial cables for instrumenting such a large array. The chosen solution and the performances achieved are presented in this paper.

A liquid Xenon Positron Emission Tomograph for small animal imaging : first experimental results of a prototype cell

A detector using liquid Xenon (LXe) in the scintillation mode is studied for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) of small animals. Its specific design aims at taking full advantage of the Liquid Xenon scintillation properties. This paper reports on energy, time and spatial resolution capabilities of the first LXe prototype module equipped with a Position Sensitive Photo- Multiplier tube (PSPMT) operating in the VUV range (178 nm) and at 165 K. The experimental results show that such a LXe PET configuration might be a promising solution insensitive to any parallax effect.

The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector (RICH) of the AMS experiment

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) experiment to be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) will be equipped with a proximity focusing Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector for measuring the electric charge and velocity of the charged cosmic particles. A RICH prototype consisting of 96 photomultiplier units, including a piece of the conical reflector, was built and its performance evaluated with ion beam data. Preliminary results of the in-beam tests performed with ion fragments resulting from collisions of a 158 GeV/c/nuc primary beam of Indium ions (CERN SPS) on a Pb target are reported. The collected data included tests to the final front-end electronics and to different aerogel radiators. Cherenkov rings for a large range of charged nuclei and with reflected photons were observed. The data analysis confirms the design goals. Charge separation up to Fe and velocity resolution of the order of 0.1% for singly charged particles are obtained.

Development of a TDC to equip a Liquid Xenon PET prototype

A Time to Digital Converter was designed (CMOS 0.35 $\mum) in order to be used in Liquid Xenon PET prototype. The circuit proved to be able to work at -120 degrees C, while showing a resolution of 250 ps. The circuit enables a low readout dead time (<90 ns) and provides a fully synchronous digital interface for easy data retrieval.

The AMS-02 RICH Imager Prototype - In-Beam Tests with 20 GeV/c per Nucleon Ions -

A prototype of the AMS Cherenkov imager (RICH) has been tested at CERN by means of a low intensity 20 GeV/c per nucleon ion beam obtained by fragmentation of a primary beam of Pb ions. Data have been collected with a single beam setting, over the range of nuclear charges 2<Z<~45 in various beam conditions and using different radiators. The charge Z and velocity beta resolutions have been measured.

Experimental study of a proximity focusing Cherenkov counter prototype for the AMS experiment

A study prototype of Proximity Focussing Ring Imaging Cherenkov counter has been built and tested with several radiators using separately cosmic-ray particles and 12C beam fragmentation products at several energies. Counter prototype and experimental setup are described, and the results of measurements reported and compared with simulation results. The performances are discussed in the perspective of the final counter design.

An Integrated Circuit for Signal Processing of the AMS RICH Photmultipliers Tubes

An analog integrated circuit has been designed, in a BiCMOS 0.8 micron technology, for the feasability study of the signal processing of the AMS RICH photomultiplier tubes. This low power, three channel gated integrator includes its own gate and no external analog delay is requiered. It processes PMT pulses over a dynamic range of more than 100. A logic output that indicates whether the analog charge has to be considered is provided. This gated integrator is used with a compact DSP based acquisition system in a 132 channels RICH prototype. The charge calibration of each channel is carried out using a LED. The pedestal measurement is performed on activation of a dedicated input. The noise contribution study of the input RC network and amplifiers is presented.
