Correlations imposed by the unitary limit between few-nucleon systems, nuclear matter and neutron stars

The large values of the singlet and triplet two-nucleon scattering lengths locate the nuclear system close to the unitary limit. This particular position strongly constrains the low-energy observables in the three-nucleon system as depending on one parameter, the triton binding energy, and introduces correlations in the low energy sector of light nuclei. Here we analyze the propagation of these correlations to infinite nuclear matter showing that its saturation properties, the equation of state of $β$-stable nuclear matter and several properties of neutron stars, as their maximum mass, are well determined solely by a few number of low-energy quantities of the two- and three-nucleon systems. In this way we make a direct link between the universal behavior observed in the low-energy region of few-nucleon systems and fundamental properties of nuclear matter and neutron stars.

Local chiral interactions, the tritium Gamow-Teller matrix element, and the three-nucleon contact term

The Gamow-Teller (GT) matrix element contributing to tritium $β$ decay is calculated with trinucleon wave functions obtained from hyperspherical-harmonics solutions of the Schrödinger equation with the chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions including $Δ$ intermediate states that have recently been constructed in configuration space. Predictions up to N3LO in the chiral expansion of the axial current (with $Δ$'s) overestimate the empirical value by 1--4 \%. By exploiting the relation between the low-energy constant (LEC) in the contact three-nucleon interaction and two-body axial current, we provide new determinations of the LECs $c_D$ and $c_E$ that characterize this interaction by fitting the trinucleon binding energy and tritium GT matrix element. Some of the implications that the resulting models of three-nucleon interactions have on the spectra of light nuclei and the equation of state of neutron matter are briefly discussed. We also provide a partial analysis, which ignores $Δ$'s, of the contributions due to loop corrections in the axial current at N4LO. Finally, explicit expressions for the axial current up to N4LO have been derived in configuration space, which other researchers in the field may find useful.

Light-nuclei spectra from chiral dynamics

A major goal of nuclear theory is to explain the spectra and stability of nuclei in terms of effective many-body interactions amongst the nucleus' constituents-the nucleons, i.e., protons and neutrons. Such an approach, referred to below as the basic model of nuclear theory, is formulated in terms of point-like nucleons, which emerge as effective degrees of freedom, at sufficiently low energy, as a result of a decimation process, starting from the fundamental quarks and gluons, described by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). A systematic way to account for the constraints imposed by the symmetries of QCD, in particular chiral symmetry, is provided by chiral effective field theory, in the framework of a low-energy expansion. Here we show, in quantum Monte Carlo calculations accurate to $\leq\!2\%$ of the binding energy, that two- and three-body chiral interactions fitted {\sl only} to bound- and scattering-state observables in, respectively, the two- and three-nucleon sectors, lead to predictions for the energy levels and level ordering of nuclei in the mass range $A\,$=$\,$4-12 in very satisfactory agreement with experimental data. Our findings provide strong support for the fundamental assumptions of the basic model, and pave the way to its systematic application to the electroweak structure and response of these systems as well as to more complex nuclei.

Implications of Efimov physics for the description of three and four nucleons in chiral effective field theory

In chiral effective field theory the leading order (LO) nucleon-nucleon potential includes two contact terms, in the two spin channels $S=0,1$, and the one-pion-exchange potential. When the pion degrees of freedom are integrated out, as in the pionless effective field theory, the LO potential includes two contact terms only. In the three-nucleon system, the pionless theory includes a three-nucleon contact term interaction at LO whereas the chiral effective theory does not. Accordingly arbitrary differences could be observed in the LO description of three- and four-nucleon binding energies. We analyze the two theories at LO and conclude that a three-nucleon contact term is necessary at this order in both theories. In turn this implies that subleading three-nucleon contact terms should be promoted to lower orders. Furthermore this analysis shows that one single low energy constant might be sufficient to explain the large values of the singlet and triplet scattering lengths.

Tritium $β$-decay in chiral effective field theory

We evaluate the Fermi and Gamow-Teller (GT) matrix elements in tritium $β$-decay by including in the charge-changing weak current the corrections up to one loop recently derived in nuclear chiral effective field theory ($χ$ EFT). The trinucleon wave functions are obtained from hyperspherical-harmonics solutions of the Schrodinger equation with two- and three-nucleon potentials corresponding to either $χ$ EFT (the N3LO/N2LO combination) or meson-exchange phenomenology (the AV18/UIX combination). We find that contributions due to loop corrections in the axial current are, in relative terms, as large as (and in some cases, dominate) those from one-pion exchange, which nominally occur at lower order in the power counting. We also provide values for the low-energy constants multiplying the contact axial current and three-nucleon potential, required to reproduce the experimental GT matrix element and trinucleon binding energies in the N3LO/N2LO and AV18/UIX calculations.

Nuclear Axial Currents in Chiral Effective Field Theory

Two-nucleon axial charge and current operators are derived in chiral effective field theory up to one loop. The derivation is based on time-ordered perturbation theory, and accounts for cancellations between the contributions of irreducible diagrams and the contributions due to non-static corrections from energy denominators of reducible diagrams. Ultraviolet divergencies associated with the loop corrections are isolated in dimensional regularization. The resulting axial current is finite and conserved in the chiral limit, while the axial charge requires renormalization. A complete set of contact terms for the axial charge up to the relevant order in the power counting is constructed.

Minimally non-local nucleon-nucleon potentials with chiral two-pion exchange including $Δ$'s

We construct a coordinate-space chiral potential, including $Δ$-isobar intermediate states in its two-pion-exchange component. The contact interactions entering at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-next-to-leading orders ($Q^2$ and $Q^4$, respectively, $Q$ denoting generically the low momentum scale) are rearranged by Fierz transformations to yield terms at most quadratic in the relative momentum operator of the two nucleons. The low-energy constants multiplying these contact interactions are fitted to the 2013 Granada database, consisting of 2309 $pp$ and 2982 $np$ data (including, respectively, 148 and 218 normalizations) in the laboratory-energy range 0--300 MeV. For the total 5291 $pp$ and $np$ data in this range, we obtain a $χ^2$/datum of roughly 1.3 for a set of three models characterized by long- and short-range cutoffs, $R_{\rm L}$ and $R_{\rm S}$ respectively, ranging from $(R_{\rm L},R_{\rm S})=(1.2,0.8)$ fm down to $(0.8,0.6)$ fm. The long-range (short-range) cutoff regularizes the one- and two-pion exchange (contact) part of the potential.

A chiral effective field theory study of hadronic parity violation in few-nucleon systems

We reconsider the derivation of the nucleon-nucleon parity-violating (PV) potential within a chiral effective field theory framework. We construct the potential up to next-to-next-to-leading order by including one-pion-exchange, two-pion-exchange, contact, and 1/M (M being the nucleon mass) terms, and use dimensional regularization to renormalize the pion-loop corrections. A detailed analysis of the number of independent low-energy constants (LEC's) entering the potential is carried out. We find that it depends on six LEC's: the pion-nucleon PV coupling constant $h^1_π$ and five parameters multiplying contact interactions. We investigate PV effects induced by this potential on several few-nucleon observables, including the $\vec{p}$-$p$ longitudinal asymmetry, the neutron spin rotation in $\vec{n}$-$p$ and $\vec{n}$-$d$ scattering, and the longitudinal asymmetry in the $^3$He$(\vec{n},p)^3$H charge-exchange reaction. An estimate for the range of values of the various LEC's is provided by using available experimental data.

Effect of three-nucleon interaction in p-3He elastic scattering

We present a detailed study of the effect of different three-nucleon interaction models in p-3He elastic scattering at low energies. In particular, two models have been considered: one derived from effective field theory at next-to-next-to-leading order and one derived from a more phenomenological point of view -- the so-called Illinois model. The four-nucleon scattering observables are calculated using the Kohn variational principle and the hyperspherical harmonics technique and the results are compared with available experimental data. We have found that the inclusion of either one of the other force model improves the agreement with the experimental data, in particular for the proton vector analyzing power.

Electromagnetic structure of A=2 and 3 nuclei in chiral effective field theory

The objectives of the present work are twofold. The first is to address and resolve some of the differences present in independent, chiral-effective-field-theory (\chiEFT) derivations up to one loop, recently appeared in the literature, of the nuclear charge and current operators. The second objective is to provide a complete set of \chiEFT predictions for the structure functions and tensor polarization of the deuteron, for the charge and magnetic form factors of 3He and 3H, and for the charge and magnetic radii of these few-nucleon systems. The calculations use wave functions derived from high-order chiral two- and three-nucleon potentials and Monte Carlo methods to evaluate the relevant matrix elements. Predictions based on conventional potentials in combination with \chiEFT charge and current operators are also presented. There is excellent agreement between theory and experiment for all these observables for momentum transfers up to q< 2.0-2.5 (1/fm); for a subset of them, this agreement extends to momentum transfers as high as q~5-6 (1/fm). A complete analysis of the results is provided.

Effect of three nucleon forces in p-3He scattering

The effect of the inclusion of different models of three nucleon (3N) forces in p-3He elastic scattering at low energies is studied. Two models have been considered: one derived from effective field theory at next-to-next-to-leading order and one derived from a more phenomenological point of view -- the so-called Illinois model. The four nucleon scattering observables are calculated using the Kohn variational principle and the hyperspherical harmonic technique and the results are compared with available experimental data. We have found that with the inclusion of both 3N force models the agreement with the experimental data is improved, in particular for the proton vector analyzing power A_y.

Three-nucleon contact interaction at the next-to-leading order

A satisfactory description of bound and scattering states of the three-nucleon (3N) system is still lacking, contrary to what happens in the two-nucleon case. In the framework of chiral effective theory, it is possible that a realistic 3N interaction will require the inclusion of subleading contact terms, which are unconstrained by chiral symmetry. We construct the minimal 3N contact Lagrangian imposing all constraints from the discrete symmetries, Fierz identities and Poincaré covariance, and show that it consists of 10 independent operators. By integrating out the pions from the effective theory we derive the pion-induced contributions to the corresponding low-energy constants (LECs), and find no clear signal of convergence of the pionful theory between N2LO and N3LO.

The two-nucleon electromagnetic charge operator in chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT) up to one loop

The electromagnetic charge operator in a two-nucleon system is derived in chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT) up to order $e\, Q$ (or N4LO), where $Q$ denotes the low-momentum scale and $e$ is the electric charge. The specific form of the N3LO and N4LO corrections from, respectively, one-pion-exchange and two-pion-exchange depends on the off-the-energy-shell prescriptions adopted for the non-static terms in the corresponding potentials. We show that different prescriptions lead to unitarily equivalent potentials and accompanying charge operators. Thus, provided a consistent set is adopted, predictions for physical observables will remain unaffected by the non-uniqueness associated with these off-the-energy-shell effects.

Muon capture on deuteron and 3He

The muon capture reactions 2H(μ^-,ν_μ)nn and 3He(μ^-,ν_μ)3H are studied with conventional or chiral realistic potentials and consistent weak currents. The initial and final A=2 and 3 nuclear wave functions are obtained from the Argonne v18 or chiral N3LO two-nucleon potential, in combination with, respectively, the Urbana IX or chiral N2LO three-nucleon potential in the case of A=3. The weak current consists of polar- and axial-vector components. The former are related to the isovector piece of the electromagnetic current via the conserved-vector-current hypothesis. These and the axial currents are derived either in a meson-exchange or in a chiral effective field theory (chiEFT) framework. There is one parameter (either the N-to-Δaxial coupling constant in the meson-exchange model, or the strength of a contact term in the chiEFT model) which is fixed by reproducing the Gamow-Teller matrix element in tritium beta-decay. The model dependence relative to the adopted interactions and currents (and cutoff sensitivity in the chiEFT currents) is weak, resulting in total rates of 392.0 +/- 2.3 Hz for A=2, and 1484 +/- 13 Hz for A=3, where the spread accounts for this model dependence.

Thermal neutron captures on $d$ and $^3$He

We report on a study of the $nd$ and $n\,^3$He radiative captures at thermal neutron energies, using wave functions obtained from either chiral or conventional two- and three-nucleon realistic potentials with the hyperspherical harmonics method, and electromagnetic currents derived in chiral effective field theory up to one loop. The predicted $nd$ and $n\,^3$He cross sections are in good agreement with data, but exhibit a significant dependence on the input Hamiltonian. A comparison is also made between these and new results for the $nd$ and $n\,^3$He cross sections obtained in the conventional framework for both potentials and currents.

The parity-violating asymmetry in the 3He(n,p)3H reaction

The longitudinal asymmetry induced by parity-violating (PV) components in the nucleon-nucleon potential is studied in the charge-exchange reaction 3He(n,p)3H at vanishing incident neutron energies. An expression for the PV observable is derived in terms of T-matrix elements for transitions from the {2S+1}L_J=1S_0 and 3S_1 states in the incoming n-3He channel to states with J=0 and 1 in the outgoing p-3H channel. The T-matrix elements involving PV transitions are obtained in first-order perturbation theory in the hadronic weak-interaction potential, while those connecting states of the same parity are derived from solutions of the strong-interaction Hamiltonian with the hyperspherical-harmonics method. The coupled-channel nature of the scattering problem is fully accounted for. Results are obtained corresponding to realistic or chiral two- and three-nucleon strong-interaction potentials in combination with either the DDH or pionless EFT model for the weak-interaction potential. The asymmetries, predicted with PV pion and vector-meson coupling constants corresponding (essentially) to the DDH "best values" set, range from -9.44 to -2.48 in units of 10^{-8}, depending on the input strong-interaction Hamiltonian. This large model dependence is a consequence of cancellations between long-range (pion) and short-range (vector-meson) contributions, and is of course sensitive to the assumed values for the PV coupling constants.

Proton-3He elastic scattering at low energies and the "A_y Puzzle"

The Kohn variational principle and the hyperspherical harmonic technique are applied to study p-3He elastic scattering at low energies. Preliminary results obtained using several interaction models are reported. The calculations are compared to a recent phase shift analysis performed at the Triangle University Nuclear Laboratory and to the available experimental data. Using a three-nucleon interaction derived from chiral perturbation theory at N2LO, we have found a noticeable reduction of the discrepancy observed for the A_y observable.

Comparative study of three-nucleon force models in $A=3,4$ systems

Using modern nucleon-nucleon interactions in the description of the $A=3,4$ nuclei, it is not possible to reproduce both the three- and four-nucleon binding energies simultaneously. This is one manifestation of the necessity of including a three-nucleon force in the nuclear Hamiltonian. In this paper we will perform a comparative study of some, widely used, three-nucleon force models. We will analyze their capability to describe the aforementioned binding energies as well as the $n-d$ doublet scattering length. A correct description of these quantities can be considered a stringent requirement for a nuclear Hamiltonian containing two- and three-nucleon interaction terms. As we will show, this requirement is not fulfilled by several of the models available in the literature. To satisfy it, we propose modifications in the parametrization of the three-nucleon forces and we study their effects on few selected $N-d$ low energy scattering observables.
