Measurement of Single and Double Spin Asymmetries in Deep Inelastic Pion Electroproduction with a Longitudinally Polarized Target

We report the first measurement of the transverse momentum dependence of double spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of pions in deep inelastic scattering off the longitudinally polarized proton. Data have been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 5.7 GeV with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). A significant non-zero $\sin2ϕ$ single spin asymmetry was also observed for the first time indicating strong spin-orbit correlations for transversely polarized quarks in the longitudinally polarized proton. The azimuthal modulations of single spin asymmetries have been measured over a wide kinematic range.

Search for the photo-excitation of exotic mesons in the pi+pi+pi- system

A search for exotic mesons in the $π^{+}π^{+}π^{-}$ system photoproduced by the charge exchange reaction $γp\to π^{+}π^{+}π^{-}(n)$ was carried out by the CLAS collaboration at Jefferson Lab. A tagged-photon beam with energies in the 4.8 to 5.4 GeV range, produced through bremsstrahlung from a 5.744 GeV electron beam, was incident on a liquid-hydrogen target. A Partial Wave Analysis (PWA) was performed on a sample of 83,000 events, the highest such statistics to date in this reaction at these energies. The main objective of this study was to look for the photoproduction of an exotic $J^{PC} = 1^{-+}$ resonant state in the 1 to 2 GeV mass range. Our PWA analysis, based on the isobar model, shows production of the $a_{2}(1320)$ and the $π_{2}(1670)$ mesons, but no evidence for the $a_{1}(1260)$, nor the $π_{1}(1600)$ exotic state at the expected levels. An upper limit of 13.5 nb is determined for the exotic $π_1(1600)$ cross section, less than 2% of the $a_2(1320)$ production.

Cascade production in the reactions gamma p --> K+ K+ (X) and gamma p --> K^+ K^+ pi- (X)

Photoproduction of the cascade resonances has been investigated in the reactions $γp \to K^+ K^+ (X)$ and $γp \to K^+ K^+ π^- (X)$. The mass split of the $Ξ$ doublet is measured to be $5.4\pm 1.8$ MeV/c$^2$, consistent with existing measurements. The differential (total) cross sections for the $Ξ^{-}$ have been determined for photon beam energies from 2.75 to 3.85 (4.75) GeV, and are consistent with a possible production mechanism of $Y^*\to K^+Ξ^-$ through a $t$-channel process. The reaction $γp \to K^+ K^+ π^-[Ξ^0]$ has also been investigated in search of excited cascade resonances. No significant signal of excited cascade states other than the $Ξ^-(1530)$ is observed. The cross section results of the $Ξ^-(1530)$ have also been obtained for photon beam energies from 3.35 to 4.75 GeV.

Energy Calibration of the JLab Bremsstrahlung Tagging System

In this report, we present the energy calibration of the Hall B bremsstrahlung tagging system at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The calibration was performed using a magnetic pair spectrometer. The tagged photon energy spectrum was measured in coincidence with $e^+e^-$ pairs as a function of the pair spectrometer magnetic field. Taking advantage of the internal linearity of the pair spectrometer, the energy of the tagging system was calibrated at the level of $\pm 0.1% E_γ$. The absolute energy scale was determined using the $e^+e^-$ rate measurements close to the end-point of the photon spectrum. The energy variations across the full tagging range were found to be $<3$ MeV.

Search for the $Θ^+$ pentaquark in the reactions $γp \to \bar K^0K^+n$ and $γp \to \bar K^0K^0p$

The exclusive reactions $γp \to \bar K^0 K^+ n$ and $γp \to \bar K^0 K^0 p$ have been studied in the photon energy range 1.6--3.8 GeV, searching for evidence of the exotic baryon $Θ^+(1540)$ in the decays $Θ^+\to nK^+$ and $Θ^+\to p K^0$. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The integrated luminosity was about 70 pb$^{-1}$. The reactions have been isolated by detecting the $K^+$ and proton directly, the neutral kaon via its decay to $K_S \to π^+ π^-$ and the neutron or neutral kaon via the missing mass technique. The mass and width of known hyperons such as $Σ^+$, $Σ^-$ and $Λ(1116)$ were used as a check of the mass determination accuracy and experimental resolution. Approximately 100,000 $Λ^*(1520)$'s and 150,000 $ϕ$'s were observed in the $\bar K^0 K^+ n$ and $\bar K^0 K^0 p$ final state respectively. No evidence for the $Θ^+$ pentaquark was found in the $nK^+$ or $pK_S$ invariant mass spectra. Upper limits were set on the production cross section of the reaction $γp \to Θ^+ \bar K^0$ as functions of center-of-mass angle, $nK^+$ and $pK_S$ masses. Combining the results of the two reactions, the 95% C.L. upper limit on the total cross section for a resonance peaked at 1540 MeV was found to be 0.7 nb. Within most of the available theoretical models, this corresponds to an upper limit on the $Θ^+$ width, $Γ_{Θ^{+}}$, ranging between 0.01 and 7 MeV.

Search for $Θ^{++}$ Pentaquarks in the Exclusive Reaction $γp\to K^+K^-p$

The reaction $γp \to pK^+K^-$ was studied at Jefferson Lab with photon energies from 1.8 to 3.8 GeV using a tagged photon beam. The goal was to search for a $Θ^{++}$ pentaquark, a narrow doubly charged baryon state having strangeness S=+1 and isospin I=1, in the $pK^+$ invariant mass spectrum. No statistically significant evidence of a $Θ^{++}$ was found. Upper limits on the total and differential production cross section for the reaction $γp \to K^-Θ^{++}$ were obtained in the mass range from 1.5 to 2.0 GeV/c$^2$, with an upper limit of about 0.15 nb, 95% C.L. for a narrow resonance with a mass $M_{Θ^{++}}=1.54$ GeV/c$^2$. This result places a very stringent upper limit on the $Θ^{++}$ width.

Birkhoff type decompositions and the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff recursion

We describe a unification of several apparently unrelated factorizations arisen from quantum field theory, vertex operator algebras, combinatorics and numerical methods in differential equations. The unification is given by a Birkhoff type decomposition that was obtained from the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula in our study of the Hopf algebra approach of Connes and Kreimer to renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory. There we showed that the Birkhoff decomposition of Connes and Kreimer can be obtained from a certain Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff recursion formula in the presence of a Rota-Baxter operator. We will explain how the same decomposition generalizes the factorization of formal exponentials and uniformization for Lie algebras that arose in vertex operator algebra and conformal field theory, and the even-odd decomposition of combinatorial Hopf algebra characters as well as to the Lie algebra polar decomposition as used in the context of the approximation of matrix exponentials in ordinary differential equations.

Photoproduction of $K^{*+}Λ$ and $K^+Σ(1385)$ in the reaction $γ\lowercase{p} \to K^+ Λπ^0 $ at Jefferson Lab

The search for missing nucleon resonances using coupled channel analysis has mostly been concentrated on $Nπ$ and $KY$ channels, while the contributions of $K^*Y$ and $KY^*$ channels have not been investigated thoroughly mostly due to the lack of data. With an integrated luminosity of about 75 $pb^{-1}$, the photoproduction data using a proton target recently collected by the CLAS Collaboration at Jefferson Lab with a photon energy range of 1.5-3.8 GeV provided large statistics for the study of light hyperon photoproduction through exclusive reactions. The reaction $γp \to K^+ Λπ^0$ has been investigated. Preliminary results of the $K^{*+}Λ$ and $K^+Σ(1385)$ cross sections are not negligible compared with the $KY$ channels. The $Λπ^0$ invariant mass spectrum is dominated by the $Σ(1385)$ signal and no significant structure was found around the $Σ(1480)$ region.

$Ξ$ spectroscopy in photoproduction on a proton target at Jefferson Lab

The CLAS Collaboration at Jefferson Lab conducted a photoproduction experiment on a proton target using a tagged photon beam with an energy range of 1.5-3.8 GeV during May-July 2004. With an integrated luminosity of about 75 $pb^{-1}$, this experiment provides the largest data set for photon-proton reactions ever collected. The reaction $γp \to K^+K^+Ξ^{-}(1320)$ has been investigated and the preliminary results of the cross section measurement of $Ξ^-(1320)$ for the photon energy range of 2.7-3.8 GeV have been obtained. In a search for excited cascade states, the reaction of $γp \to K^+K^+π^-(Ξ^0(1320))$ has also been explored.

Combinatorics of renormalization as matrix calculus

We give a simple presentation of the combinatorics of renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory in terms of triangular matrices. The prescription, that may be of calculational value, is derived from first principles, to wit, the ``Birkhoff decomposition'' in the Hopf-algebraic description of renormalization by Connes and Kreimer.

Search for $Θ^+(1540)$ pentaquark in high statistics measurement of $γp \to \bar K^0 K^+ n$ at CLAS

The exclusive reaction $γp \to \bar K^0 K^+ n$ was studied in the photon energy range between 1.6-3.8 GeV searching for evidence of the exotic baryon $Θ^+(1540)\to nK^+$. The decay to $nK^+$ requires the assignment of strangeness $S=+1$ to any observed resonance. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 70 $pb^{-1}$. No evidence for the $Θ^+$ pentaquark was found. Upper limits were set on the production cross section as function of center-of-mass angle and $nK^+$ mass. The 95% CL upper limit on the total cross section for a narrow resonance at 1540 MeV was found to be 0.8 nb.

A Note on Overshoot Estimation in Pole Placements

In this note we show that for any given controllable pair (A,B) and any c> 1, a gain matrix K can be chosen so that the transition matrix of the system x' = (A+BK)x decays at the exponential rate exp(-ct) and the overshoot of the transition matrix can be bounded by Mc^L for some M and L that are independent of the choice of c.

Energy-resolved electron-spin dynamics at surfaces of p-doped GaAs

Electron-spin relaxation at different surfaces of p-doped GaAs is investigated by means of spin, time and energy resolved 2-photon photoemission. These results are contrasted with bulk results obtained by time-resolved Faraday rotation measurements as well as calculations of the Bir-Aronov-Pikus spin-flip mechanism. Due to the reduced hole density in the band bending region at the (100) surface the spin-relaxation time increases over two orders of magnitude towards lower energies. At the flat-band (011) surface a constant spin relaxation time in agreement with our measurements and calculations for bulk GaAs is obtained.

Matrix Representation of Renormalization in Perturbative Quantum Field Theory

We formulate the Hopf algebraic approach of Connes and Kreimer to renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory using triangular matrix representation. We give a Rota-Baxter anti-homomorphism from general regularized functionals on the Feynman graph Hopf algebra to triangular matrices with entries in a Rota-Baxter algebra. For characters mapping to the group of unipotent triangular matrices we derive the algebraic Birkhoff decomposition for matrices using Spitzer's identity. This simple matrix factorization is applied to characterize and calculate perturbative renormalization.
