Modeling the Effect of the Heliospheric Magnetic Field on Cosmic Ray Muon Shadows

Shadows cast in the cosmic ray (CR) muon sky by the Sun were located using muon data from the MINOS far detector in Northern Minnesota. The shadows were observed independently across three time periods; near solar minimum, near solar maximum, and over the entire 13 year span of the data. A distribution of muon positions for each shadow was then sampled to simulate CR motions near the Sun using the Parker spiral model of the Heliospheric Magnetic Field (HMF) and a dipole model of the Geomagnetic Field (GMF). The resulting particle distributions were then compared to their position with respect to the Sun. Results show that the Parker spiral model is most consistent with the solar minimum shadow and least consistent with the solar maximum shadow, as expected. The simple Parker spiral is more consistent with the data for a harder CR spectrum than is actually present, indicating the need for a more detailed HMF model. Plausible modifications to the Parker spiral model which would affect the overall shift of the Sun's CR shadow are discussed.

The Design and Construction of the Chips Water Cherenkov Neutrino Detector

CHIPS (CHerenkov detectors In mine PitS) was a prototype large-scale water Cherenkov detector located in northern Minnesota. The main aim of the R&D project was to demonstrate that construction costs of neutrino oscillation detectors could be reduced by at least an order of magnitude compared to other equivalent experiments. This article presents design features of the CHIPS detector along with details of the implementation and deployment of the prototype. While issues during and after the deployment of the detector prevented data taking, a number of key concepts and designs were successfully demonstrated.

Precision constraints for three-flavor neutrino oscillations from the full MINOS+ and MINOS data set

We report the final measurement of the neutrino oscillation parameters $Δm^2_{32}$ and $\sin^2θ_{23}$ using all data from the MINOS and MINOS+ experiments. These data were collected using a total exposure of $23.76 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target producing $ν_{mu}$ and $\overline{ν_μ}$ beams and 60.75 kt$\cdot$yr exposure to atmospheric neutrinos. The measurement of the disappearance of $ν_μ$ and the appearance of $ν_e$ events between the Near and Far detectors yields $|Δm^2_{32}|=2.40^{+0.08}_{-0.09}~(2.45^{+0.07}_{-0.08}) \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ and $\sin^2θ_{23} = 0.43^{+0.20}_{-0.04} ~(0.42^{+0.07}_{-0.03})$ at 68% C.L. for Normal (Inverted) Hierarchy.

CHIPS Event Reconstruction and Design Optimisation

The CHIPS experiment will comprise a 10 kton water Cherenkov detector in an open mine pit in northern Minnesota, USA. The detector has been simulated using a full GEANT4 simulation and a series of event reconstruction algorithms have been developed to exploit the charge and time information from all of the PMTs. A comparison of simulated CCQE nu_mu and nu_e interactions using 10 inch and 3 inch PMTs is presented, alongside a comparison of 10% and 6% photocathode coverage for 3 inch PMTs. The studies demonstrate that the required selection efficiency and purity of charged-current nu_e interactions can be achieved using a photocathode coverage of 6% with 3 inch PMTs. Finally, a dedicated pi-zero fitter is shown to successfully reconstruct a clean sample of pi-zero mesons despite the low 6% photocathode coverage with 3 inch PMTs.

Measuring the Attenuation Length of Water in the CHIPS-M Water Cherenkov Detector

The water at the proposed site of the CHIPS water Cherenkov detector has been studied to measure its attenuation length for Cherenkov light as a function of filtering time. A scaled model of the CHIPS detector filled with water from the Wentworth 2W pit, proposed site of the CHIPS deployment, in conjunction with a 3.2\unit{m} vertical column filled with this water, was used to study the transmission of 405nm laser light. Results consistent with attenuation lengths of up to 100m were observed for this wavelength with filtration and UV sterilization alone.

R&D Argon Detector at Ash River (RADAR) - Letter of Intent

In the RADAR project described in this Letter of Intent, we propose to deploy a 6 kton liquid argon TPC at the NOvA Far Detector building in Ash River, Minnesota, and expose it to the NuMI beam during NOvA running. It will significantly add to the physics capabilities of the NOvA program while providing LBNE with an R&D program based on full-scale TPC module assemblies. RADAR offers an excellent opportunity to improve the full Homestake LBNE project in physics reach, timeline, costs, and fostering international partnership. The anticipated duration of the project's construction is 5 years, with running happening between 2018 and 2023.

CHerenkov detectors In mine PitS (CHIPS) Letter of Intent to FNAL

This Letter of Intent outlines a proposal to build a large, yet cost-effective, 100 kton fiducial mass water Cherenkov detector that will initially run in the NuMI beam line. The CHIPS detector (CHerenkov detector In Mine PitS) will be deployed in a flooded mine pit, removing the necessity and expense of a substantial external structure capable of supporting a large detector mass. There are a number of mine pits in northern Minnesota along the NuMI beam that could be used to deploy such a detector. In particular, the Wentworth Pit 2W is at the ideal off-axis angle to contribute to the measurement of the CP violating phase. The detector is designed so that it can be moved to a mine pit in the LBNE beam line once that becomes operational.
