Static magnetic and ESR spectroscopic properties of the dimer-chain antiferromagnet BiCoPO$_5$

We report a comprehensive study of the static susceptibility, high-field magnetization and high-frequency/high-magnetic field electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) spectroscopy of polycrystalline samples of the bismuth cobalt oxy-phosphate BiCoPO$_5$. This compound features a peculiar spin system that can be considered as antiferromagnetic (AFM) chains built of pairs of ferromagnetically coupled Co spins and interconnected in all three spatial directions. It was previously shown that BiCoPO$_5$ orders antiferromagnetically at $T_{\rm N} \approx 10$ K and this order can be continuously suppressed by magnetic field towards the critical value $μ_0H_{\rm c} \approx 15$ T. In our experiments we find strongly enhanced magnetic moments and spectroscopic $g$ factors as compared to the expected spin-only values, suggesting a strong contribution of orbital magnetism for the Co$^{2+}$ ions. This is quantitatively confirmed by ab initio quantum chemical calculations. Within the AFM ordered phase, we observe a distinct field-induced magnetic phase transition. Its critical field rises to $\sim 6$ T at $T \ll T_{\rm N}$. The HF-ESR spectra recorded at $T\ll T_{\rm N}$ are very rich comprising up to six resonance modes possibly of the multimagnonic nature that soften towards the critical region around 6 T. Interestingly, we find that the Co moments are not yet fully polarized at $H_{\rm c}$ which supports a theoretical proposal identifying $H_{\rm c}$ as the quantum critical point for the transition of the spin system in BiCoPO$_5$ to the quantum disordered state at stronger fields.

Magnetic properties and signatures of moment ordering in triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeO$_2$

The magnetic ground state and the crystalline electric field level scheme of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeO$_2$ are investigated. Below $T_N =$ 300 mK, KCeO$_2$ develops signatures of magnetic order in specific heat measurements and low energy inelastic neutron scattering data. Trivalent Ce$^{3+}$ ions in the $D_{3d}$ local environment of this compound exhibit large splittings among the lowest three $4f^1$ Kramers doublets defining for the free ion the $J = 5/2$ sextet and a ground state doublet with dipole character, consistent with recent theoretical predictions in M. S. Eldeeb et al. Phys. Rev. Materials 4, 124001 (2020). An unexplained, additional local mode appears, and potential origins of this anomalous mode are discussed.

Energy scales in 4f1 delafossite magnets: crystal-field splittings larger than the strength of spin-orbit coupling in KCeO2

Ytterbium-based delafossites with effective S=1/2 moments are investigated intensively as candidates for quantum spin-liquid ground states. While the synthesis of related cerium compounds has also been reported, many important details concerning their crystal, electronic, and magnetic structures are unclear. Here we analyze the S=1/2 system KCeO2, combining complementary theoretical methods. The lattice geometry was optimized and the band structure investigated using density functional theory extended to the level of a GGA+U calculation in order to reproduce the correct insulating behavior. The Ce 4f1 states were then analyzed in more detail with the help of ab initio wave-function-based computations. Unusually large effective crystal-field splittings of up to 320 meV are predicted, which puts KCeO2 in the strong field coupling regime. Our results reveal a subtle interplay between ligand-cage electrostatics and the trigonal field generated by the extended crystalline surroundings, relevant in the context of recent studies on tuning the nature of the ground-state wave function in 4f triangular-lattice and pyrochlore compounds. It also makes KCeO2 an interesting model system in relation to the effect of large crystal-field splittings on the anisotropy of intersite exchange in spin-orbit coupled quantum magnets.

Interplay of electron correlations, spin-orbit couplings, and structural effects for Cu centers in the quasi-two-dimensional magnet InCu$_{2/3}$V$_{1/3}$O$_3$

Less common ligand coordination of transition-metal centers is often associated with peculiar valence-shell electron configurations and outstanding physical properties. One example is the Fe$^+$ ion with linear coordination, actively investigated in the research area of single-molecule magnetism. Here we address the nature of 3$d^9$ states for Cu$^{2+}$ ions sitting in the center of trigonal bipyramidal ligand cages in the quasi-two-dimensional honeycomb compound InCu$_{2/3}$V$_{1/3}$O$_3$, whose unusual magnetic properties were intensively studied in the recent past. In particular, we discuss the interplay of structural effects, electron correlations, and spin-orbit couplings in this material. A relevant computational finding is a different sequence of the Cu ($xz$, $yz$) and ($xy$, $x^2\!-\!y^2$) levels as compared to existing electronic-structure models, which has implications for the interpretation of various excitation spectra. Spin-orbit interactions, both first- and second-order, turn out to be stronger than previously assumed, suggesting that rather rich single-ion magnetic properties can be in principle achieved also for the 3$d^9$ configuration by properly adjusting the sequence of crystal-field states for such less usual ligand coordination.

Long-range magnetic order in the ${\tilde S}=1/2$ triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeS$_2$

Recently, several putative quantum spin liquid (QSL) states were discovered in ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ rare-earth based triangular-lattice antiferromagnets (TLAF) with the delafossite structure. A way to clarify the origin of the QSL state in these systems is to identify ways to tune them from the putative QSL state towards long-range magnetic order. Here, we introduce the Ce-based TLAF KCeS$_2$ and show via low-temperature specific heat and $μ$SR investigations that it yields magnetic order below $T_{\mathrm N} = 0.38$ K despite the same delafossite structure. We identify a well separated ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ ground state for KCeS$_2$ from inelastic neutron scattering and embedded-cluster quantum chemical calculations. Magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements on single crystals indicate a strong easy-plane $g$~factor anisotropy, in agreement with the ab initio calculations. Finally, our specific-heat studies reveal an in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram which may indicate anisotropic magnetic interactions in KCeS$_2$.

Quasi-2D magnetic correlations in Ni$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ probed by ${}^{31}$P NMR

Detailed ${}^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements are presented on well-characterized single crystals of antiferromagnetic van der Waals Ni$_2$P$_2$S$_6$. An anomalous breakdown is observed in the proportionality of the NMR shift $K$ with the bulk susceptibility $χ$. This so-called $K$$-$$χ$ anomaly occurs in close proximity to the broad peak in $χ(T)$, thereby implying a connection to quasi-2D magnetic correlations known to be responsible for this maximum. Quantum chemistry calculations show that crystal field energy level depopulation effects cannot be responsible for the $K$$-$$χ$ anomaly. Appreciable in-plane transferred hyperfine coupling is observed, which is consistent with the proposed Ni$-$S$-$Ni super- and Ni$-$S$-$S$-$Ni super-super-exchange coupling mechanisms. Magnetization and spin$-$lattice relaxation rate ($T_1^{-1}$) measurements indicate little to no magnetic field dependence of the Néel temperature. Finally, $T_1^{-1}(T)$ evidences relaxation driven by three-magnon scattering in the antiferromagnetic state.

Highly dispersive magnons with spin-gap like features in the frustrated ferromagnetic S=1/2 chain compound Ca2Y2Cu5O10 detected by inelastic neutron scattering

We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments in Ca2Y2Cu5O10 and map out the full one magnon dispersion which extends up to a record value of 53 meV for frustrated ferromagnetic (FM) edge-sharing CuO2 chain (FFESC) cuprates. A homogeneous spin-1/2 chain model with a FM nearest-neighbor (NN), an antiferromagnetic (AFM) next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) inchain, and two diagonal AFM interchain couplings (ICs) analyzed within linear spin-wave theory (LSWT) reproduces well the observed strong dispersion along the chains and a weak one perpendicularly. The ratio R=|J_{a2}/J_{a1}| of the FM NN and the AFM NNN couplings is found as ~0.23, close to the critical point Rc=1/4 which separates ferromagnetically and antiferromagnetically correlated spiral magnetic ground states in single chains, whereas Rc>0.25 for coupled chains is considerably upshifted even for relatively weak IC. Although the measured dispersion can be described by homogeneous LSWT, the scattering intensity appears to be considerably reduced at ~11.5 and ~28 meV. The gap-like feature at 11.5 meV is attributed to magnon-phonon coupling whereas based on DMRG simulations of the dynamical structure factor the gap at 28 meV is considered to stem partly from quantum effects due to the AFM IC. Another contribution is ascribed to the intrinsic superstructure from the distorting incommensurate pattern of CaY cationic chains adjacent to the CuO2 ones. It gives rise to non-equivalent CuO4 units and Cu-O-Cu bond angles Phi and a resulting distribution of all exchange integrals. The J's fitted by homogeneous LSWT are regarded as average values. The record value of the FM NN integral J1=24 meV among FFESC cuprates can be explained by a non-universal Phi (not 90 deg.) and Cu-O bond length dependent anisotropic mean direct FM Cu-O exchange K_{pd}~120 meV. Enhanced K_{pd} values are also needed to compensate a significant AFM J_{dd} > ~6 meV.

Ferromagnetic ordering of linearly coordinated Co ions in LiSr$_2$[CoN$_2$]

LiSr$_2$[CoN$_2$] single crystals were successfully grown out of Li-rich flux. Temperature- and field-dependent measurements of the magnetization in the range of $T = 2 - 300$ K and up to $μ_{0}\textit{H} = 7$ T as well as measurements of the heat capacity are presented. Ferromagnetic ordering emerges below $T_C = 44$ K and comparatively large coercivity fields of $μ_0H = 0.3$ T as well as pronounced anisotropy are observed upon cooling. Polycrystalline samples of the Ca analog LiCa$_2$[CoN$_2$] were obtained and investigated in a similar way. In both compounds Co manifests orbital contributions to the magnetic moment and large single-ion anisotropy that is caused by second-order Spin-orbit coupling. Quantum chemistry calculations reveal a magnetic anisotropy energy of 7 meV, twice as large as the values reported for similar Co $d^{8}$ systems.

NaYbS$_2$ - a new planar spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice magnet and putative spin liquid

Platelike high-quality NaYbS$_{2}$ rhombohedral single crystals with lateral dimensions of a few mm have been grown and investigated in great detail by bulk methods like magnetization and specific heat, but also by local probes like nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron-spin resonance (ESR), muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR), and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) over a wide field and temperature range. Our single-crystal studies clearly evidence a strongly anisotropic quasi-2D magnetism and an emerging spin-orbit entangled $S=1/2$ state of Yb towards low temperatures together with an absence of long-range magnetic order down to 260~mK. In particular, the clear and narrow Yb ESR lines together with narrow $^{23}$Na NMR lines evidence an absence of inherent structural distortions in the system, which is in strong contrast to the related spin-liquid candidate YbMgGaO$_{4}$ falling within the same space group $R\overline{3}m$. This identifies NaYbS$_{2}$ as a rather pure spin-1/2 triangular lattice magnet and a new putative quantum spin liquid.

Pressure-induced dimerization and valence bond crystal formation in the Kitaev-Heisenberg magnet alpha-RuCl3

Magnetization and high-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements of the Kitaev-Heisenberg material alpha-RuCl3 reveal a pressure-induced crystallographic and magnetic phase transition at a hydrostatic pressure of p=0.2 GPa. This structural transition into a triclinic phase is characterized by a very strong dimerization of the Ru-Ru bonds, accompanied by a collapse of the magnetic susceptibility. Ab initio quantum-chemistry calculations disclose a pressure-induced enhancement of the direct 4d-4d bonding on particular Ru-Ru links, causing a sharp increase of the antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. These combined experimental and computational data show that the Kitaev spin liquid phase in alpha-RuCl3 strongly competes with the crystallization of spin singlets into a valence bond solid.

Comment on `Oxygen vacancy-induced magnetic moment in edge-sharing CuO$_{2}$ chains of Li$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$'

In a recent work devoted to the magnetism of Li$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$, Shu et al. [New J. Phys. 19 (2017) 023026] have proposed a "simplified" unfrustrated microscopic model that differs considerably from the models refined through decades of prior work. We show that the proposed model is at odds with known experimental data, including the reported magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ data up to 550~K. Using an 8$^{\rm th}$ order high-temperature expansion for $χ(T)$, we show that the experimental data for Li$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$ are consistent with the prior model derived from inelastic neutron scattering (INS) studies. We also establish the $T$-range of validity for a Curie-Weiss law for the real frustrated magnetic system. We argue that the knowledge of the long-range ordered magnetic structure for $T<T_N$ and of $χ(T)$ in a restricted $T$-range provides insufficient information to extract all of the relevant couplings in frustrated magnets; the saturation field and INS data must also be used to determine several exchange couplings, including the weak but decisive frustrating antiferromagnetic (AFM) interchain couplings.

Breakdown of magnetic order in the pressurized Kitaev iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

Temperature-pressure phase diagram of the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ is explored using magnetization, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements, as well as single-crystal x-ray diffraction under pressure and ab initio calculations. The Neel temperature of $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ increases with the slope of 0.9 K/GPa upon initial compression, but the reduction in the polarization field $H_c$ reflects a growing instability of the incommensurate order. At 1.4 GPa, the ordered state breaks down upon a first-order transition giving way to a new ground state marked by the coexistence of dynamically correlated and frozen spins. This partial freezing in the absence of any conspicuous structural defects may indicate classical nature of the resulting pressure-induced spin liquid, an observation paralleled to the increase in the nearest-neighbor off-diagonal exchange $Γ$ under pressure.

Pressure-driven collapse of the relativistic electronic ground state in a honeycomb iridate

The electronic ground state in many iridate materials is described by a complex wave-function in which spin and orbital angular momenta are entangled due to relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Such a localized electronic state carries an effective total angular momentum of $J_{eff}=1/2$. In materials with an edge-sharing octahedral crystal structure, such as the honeycomb iridates Li2IrO3 and Na2IrO3, these $J_{eff}=1/2$ moments are expected to be coupled through a special bond-dependent magnetic interaction, which is a necessary condition for the realization of a Kitaev quantum spin liquid. However, this relativistic electron picture is challenged by an alternate description, in which itinerant electrons are confined to a benzene-like hexagon, keeping the system insulating despite the delocalized nature of the electrons. In this quasi-molecular orbital (QMO) picture, the honeycomb iridates are an unlikely choice for a Kitaev spin liquid. Here we show that the honeycomb iridate Li2IrO3 is best described by a $J_{eff}=1/2$ state at ambient pressure, but crosses over into a QMO state under the application of small (~ 0.1 GPa) hydrostatic pressure. This result illustrates that the physics of iridates is extremely rich due to a delicate balance between electronic bandwidth, spin-orbit coupling, crystal field, and electron correlation.

Doping Dependence of Collective Spin and Orbital Excitations in Spin 1 Quantum Antiferromagnet La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_4$ Observed by X-rays

We report the first empirical demonstration that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is sensitive to \emph{collective} magnetic excitations in $S=1$ systems by probing the Ni $L_3$-edge of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_4$ ($x = 0, 0.33, 0.45$). The magnetic excitation peak is asymmetric, indicating the presence of single and multi spin-flip excitations. As the hole doping level is increased, the zone boundary magnon energy is suppressed at a much larger rate than that in hole doped cuprates. Based on the analysis of the orbital and charge excitations observed by RIXS, we argue that this difference is related to the orbital character of the doped holes in these two families. This work establishes RIXS as a probe of fundamental magnetic interactions in nickelates opening the way towards studies of heterostructures and ultra-fast pump-probe experiments.

Tuning Magnetic Coupling in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ Thin Films with Epitaxial Strain

We report x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of epitaxially-strained $\mathrm{Sr_2IrO_4}$ thin films. The films were grown on $\mathrm{SrTiO_3}$ and $\mathrm{(LaAlO_3)_{0.3}(Sr_2AlTaO_6)_{0.7}}$ substrates, under slight tensile and compressive strains, respectively. Although the films develop a magnetic structure reminiscent of bulk $\mathrm{Sr_2IrO_4}$, the magnetic correlations are extremely anisotropic, with in-plane correlation lengths significantly longer than the out-of-plane correlation lengths. In addition, the compressive (tensile) strain serves to suppress (enhance) the magnetic ordering temperature $\mathrm{T_N}$, while raising (lowering) the energy of the zone boundary magnon. Quantum chemical calculations show that the tuning of magnetic energy scales can be understood in terms of strain-induced change in bond lengths.

Kitaev interactions between j=1/2 moments in honeycomb Na2IrO3 are large and ferromagnetic: insights from ab initio quantum chemistry calculations

Na$_2$IrO$_3$, a honeycomb 5$d^5$ oxide, has been recently identified as a potential realization of the Kitaev spin lattice. The basic feature of this spin model is that for each of the three metal-metal links emerging out of a metal site, the Kitaev interaction connects only spin components perpendicular to the plaquette defined by the magnetic ions and two bridging ligands. The fact that reciprocally orthogonal spin components are coupled along the three different links leads to strong frustration effects and nontrivial physics. While the experiments indicate zigzag antiferromagnetic order in Na$_2$IrO$_3$, the signs and relative strengths of the Kitaev and Heisenberg interactions are still under debate. Herein we report results of ab initio many-body electronic structure calculations and establish that the nearest-neighbor exchange is strongly anisotropic with a dominant ferromagnetic Kitaev part, whereas the Heisenberg contribution is significantly weaker and antiferromagnetic. The calculations further reveal a strong sensitivity to tiny structural details such as the bond angles. In addition to the large spin-orbit interactions, this strong dependence on distortions of the Ir$_2$O$_2$ plaquettes singles out the honeycomb 5$d^5$ oxides as a new playground for the realization of unconventional magnetic ground states and excitations in extended systems.

Testing the validity of the strong spin-orbit-coupling limit for octahedrally coordinated iridates in a model system Sr$_3$CuIrO$_6$

The electronic structure of Sr$_3$CuIrO$_6$, a model system for the 5d Ir ion in an octahedral environment, is studied through a combination of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and theoretical calculations. RIXS spectra at the Ir L$_3$-edge reveal an Ir $t_{2g}$ manifold that is split into three levels, in contrast to the expectations of the strong spin-orbit-coupling limit. Effective Hamiltonian and $ab inito$ quantum chemistry calculations find a strikingly large non-cubic crystal field splitting comparable to the spin-orbit coupling, which results in a strong mixing of the $j_{\mathsf{eff}}=1/2$ and $j_{\mathsf{eff}}=3/2$ states and modifies the isotropic wavefunctions on which many theoretical models are based.

Crystal field splitting and correlation effect on the electronic structure of A2IrO3

The electronic structure of the honeycomb lattice iridates Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 has been investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Crystal-field split d-d excitations are resolved in the high-resolution RIXS spectra. In particular, the splitting due to non-cubic crystal fields, derived from the splitting of j_eff=3/2 states, is much smaller than the typical spin-orbit energy scale in iridates, validating the applicability of j_eff physics in A2IrO3. We also find excitonic enhancement of the particle-hole excitation gap around 0.4 eV, indicating that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction could be large. These findings suggest that both Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 can be described as spin-orbit Mott insulators, similar to the square lattice iridate Sr2IrO4.
