Recent advances in triboelectric nanogenerators: energy harvest and other applications

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) with triboelectrification and electrostatic induction effects have attracted wide attention in recent decades, for its diversified application scenarios such as power generation, sensing, and so on. Undoubtedly, although still lacks standardized large-scale production, TENG has demonstrated good performance and increasingly promising prospects in fields such as energy harvest, healthcare, and medical monitoring. Here, this minireview provides a brief summary on the latest application progress of TENG, which may offer insights for expanding application fields and developing design concepts for TENG based devices.

State of the Art Development on Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Solid-state lithium batteries (SLBs) offers a promising avenue for the development of next-generation lithium-ion batteries with ultrahigh energy density and safety performance. This review provides a quick overview of the state-of-the-art development of anode, cathode, solid electrolyte of SLBs and the observation of ion transport in the cell during the past half year in 2023. Other important developments for SLIBs such as high safety and performance strategies have also been provided.

Towards the mechanism and high performance of solid-state Li batteries

Recently some critical problems and challenges have been exposed, hindering the development and practical application of SSLBs, such as the low room temperature ionic conductivity of solid electrolyte, the risk of short circuit caused by lithium dendrite piercing the electrolyte, etc. In order to address these challenges, it's essential to obtain in-depth insights into mechanisms and systematic optimization of SSLBs, including interfaces, electrolytes, and battery structures. Here, this minireview provides a brief summary, including strategies for electrode and electrolyte preparation, advanced battery characterization techniques, and the latest computational and simulation methods to advance understanding of kinetic or atomic scale mechanisms. The above contents will play an active role in promoting the development and practical application of safer and higher performance SSLBs.

Superconductivity at 2.5 K in new transition-metal chalcogenide Ta2PdSe5

We report the synthesis and superconducting properties of a new transition-metal chalcogenide Ta$_2$PdSe$_5$. The measurements of resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat reveal that Ta$_2$PdSe$_5$ is a bulk superconductor with $T_c$ $\simeq$ 2.5 K. The zero-field electronic specific heat in the superconducting state can be fitted with a two-gap BCS model. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ shows a linear temperature dependence, and the value of $H_{c2}$(0) is much higher than the estimated Pauli limiting field $H_{c2}^{P}$ and orbital limiting field $H_{c2}^{orb}$. All these results of specific heat and upper critical field suggest that Ta$_2$PdSe$_5$ is a multi-band superconductor.

Structure and thermodynamic properties of a weakly-coupled antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain compound (C5H12N)CuBr3

Single crystals of a metal organic complex \ce{(C5H12N)CuBr3} (\ce{C5H12N} = piperidinium, pipH for short) have been synthesized and the structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. \ce{(pipH)CuBr3} crystallizes in the monoclinic group $C$2/$c$. Edging-sharing \ce{CuBr5} units link to form zigzag chains along the $c$ axis and the neighboring Cu(II) ions with spin-1/2 are bridged by bi-bromide ions. Magnetic susceptibility data down to 1.8 K can be well fitted by the Bonner-Fisher formula for antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain, giving the intrachain magnetic coupling constant $J$ $\sim$ 17 K. At zero field, \ce{(pipH)CuBr3} shows three-dimensional (3D) order below $T_N$ = 1.68 K. Calculated by the mean-field theory, the interchain coupling constant $J'$ = 0.65 K is obtained and the ordered magnetic moment $m_0$ is about 0.20 $μ_B$. This value of $m_0$ makes \ce{(pipH)CuBr3} a rare compound suitable to study the dimensional crossover problem in magnetism, since both 3D order and one-dimensional (1D) quantum fluctuations are prominent. In addition, specific heat measurements reveal two successive magnetic transitions with lowering temperature when external field $H \geq$ 3 T is applied along the $a'$ axis. The $H$ - $T$ phase diagram of \ce{(pipH)CuBr3} is roughly constructed. The interplay between exchange interactions, dimensionality, Zeeman energy and possible Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction should be the driving force for the multiple phase transitions.
