We prove that the universal covering space of a complex projective manifold is holomorphically convex provided its fundamental group is linear.
We discuss the Hodge theory of algebraic non-commutative spaces and analyze how this theory interacts with the Calabi-Yau condition and with mirror symmetry. We develop an abstract theory of non-commutative Hodge structures, investigate existence and variations, and propose explicit construction and classification techniques. We study the main examples of non-commutative Hodge structures coming from a symplectic or a complex geometry possibly twisted by a potential. We study the interactions of the new Hodge theoretic invariants with mirror symmetry and derive non-commutative analogues of some of the more interesting consequences of Hodge theory such as unobstructedness and the construction of canonical coordinates on moduli.
We study some basic properties of schematic homotopy types and the schematization functor. We describe two different algebraic models for schematic homotopy types: co-simplicial Hopf alegbras and equivariant co-simplicial algebras, and provide explicit constructions of the schematization functor for each of these models. We also investigate some standard properties of the schematization functor helpful for the description of the schematization of smooth projective complex varieties. In a companion paper these results are used in the construction of a non-abelian Hodge structure on the schematic homotopy type of a smooth projective variety.
In this work we use Hodge theoretic methods to study homotopy types of complex projective manifolds with arbitrary fundamental groups. The main tool we use is the \textit{schematization functor} $X \mapsto (X\otimes \mathbb{C})^{sch}$, introduced by the third author as a substitute for the rationalization functor in homotopy theory in the case of non-simply connected spaces. Our main result is the construction of a \textit{Hodge decomposition} on $(X\otimes\mathbb{C})^{sch}$. This Hodge decomposition is encoded in an action of the discrete group $\mathbb{C}^{\times δ}$ on the object $(X\otimes \mathbb{C})^{sch}$ and is shown to recover the usual Hodge decomposition on cohomology, the Hodge filtration on the pro-algebraic fundamental group as defined by C.Simpson, and in the simply connected case, the Hodge decomposition on the complexified homotopy groups as defined by J.Morgan and R. Hain. This Hodge decomposition is shown to satisfy a purity property with respect to a weight filtration, generalizing the fact that the higher homotopy groups of a simply connected projective manifold have natural mixed Hodge structures. As a first application we construct a new family of examples of homotopy types which are not realizable as complex projective manifolds. Our second application is a formality theorem for the schematization of a complex projective manifold. Finally, we present conditions on a complex projective manifold $X$ under which the image of the Hurewitz morphism of $π_{i}(X) \to H_{i}(X)$ is a sub-Hodge structure.
In this paper we study the monodromy action on the first Betti and de Rham non-abelian cohomology arising from a family of smooth curves. We describe sufficient conditions for the existence of a Zariski dense monodromy orbit. In particular we show that for a Lefschetz pencil of sufficiently high degree the monodromy action is dense.
We discuss the properties of a certain type of Dehn surgery along a Lagrangian torus in a symplectic 4-manifold, known as Luttinger's surgery, and use this construction to provide a purely topological interpretation of a non-isotopy result for symplectic plane curves with cusp and node singularities due to Moishezon.
Introducing the notion of stabilized fundamental group for the complement of a branch curve in $CP^2$, we define effectively computable invariants of symplectic 4-manifolds that generalize those previously introduced by Moishezon and Teicher for complex projective surfaces. Moreover, we study the structure of these invariants and formulate conjectures supported by calculations on new examples.
A projective variety has a large fundamental group if its universal covering has no compact subvarieties. In this paper we investigate whether the property of a variety having a large fundamental groups is stable under Kähler deformations.
We generalize the classical Szpiro inequality to the case of a semistable family of hyperelliptic curves. We show that for a semistable symplectic Lefschetz fibration of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$, the number $N$ of non-separating vanishing cycles and the number $D$ of singular fibers satisfy the inequality $N \leq (4g+2)D$.
In this paper we generalize to the non-abelian context a classical theorem of Griffiths which studies the behavior of the $(p,q)$-components of a horizontal section in a variation of Hodge structures over a smooth projective variety.
In this paper we give an explicit construction of a symplectic Lefschetz fibration whose total space is a smooth compact four dimensional manifold with a prescribed fundamental group. We also study the numerical properties of the sections in symplectic Lefschetz fibrations and their relation to the structure of the monodromy group.
