The He-shell flash in action: T Ursae Minoris revisited

We present an updated and improved description of the light curve behaviour of T Ursae Minoris, which is a Mira star with the strongest period change (the present rate is an amazing -3.8+/-0.4 days/year corresponding to a relative decrease of about 1% per cycle). Ninety years of visual data were collected from all available databases and the resulting, almost uninterrupted light curve was analysed with the O-C diagram, Fourier analysis and various time-frequency methods. The Choi-Williams and Zhao-Atlas-Marks distributions gave the clearest image of frequency and light curve shape variations. A decrease of the intensity average of the light curve was also found, which is in accordance with a period-luminosity relation for Mira stars. We predict the star will finish its period decrease in the meaningfully near future (c.c. 5 to 30 years) and strongly suggest to closely follow the star's variations (photometric, as well as spectroscopic) during this period.

Wind Accretion and State Transitions in Cygnus X-1

We present the results of a spectroscopic monitoring program (from 1998 to 2002) of the H-alpha emission strength in HDE 226868, the optical counterpart of the black hole binary, Cyg X-1. The H-alpha profiles consist of (1) a P Cygni component associated with the wind of the supergiant, (2) emission components that attain high velocity at the conjunctions and that probably form in enhanced outflows both towards and away from the black hole, and (3) an emission component that moves in anti-phase with the supergiant's motion. We argue that the third component forms in accreted gas near the black hole, and the radial velocity curve of the emission is consistent with a mass ratio of M_X / M_opt = 0.36 +/- 0.05. We find that there is a general anti-correlation between the H-alpha emission strength and X-ray flux in the sense that when the H-alpha emission is strong (W_λ< -0.5 Angstroms) the X-ray flux is weaker and the spectrum harder. On the other hand, there is no correlation between H-alpha emission strength and X-ray flux when H-alpha is weak. During the low/hard X-ray state, the strong wind is fast and the accretion rate is relatively low, while in the high/soft state the weaker, highly ionized wind attains only a moderate velocity and the accretion rate increases. We argue that the X-ray transitions from the normal low/hard to the rare high/soft state are triggered by episodes of decreased mass loss rate in the supergiant donor star.

A photometric monitoring of bright high-amplitude delta Scuti stars. I. The double-mode pulsation of V567 Ophiuchi

We present the first results of an observational project, which addresses the period changing behaviour of a sample of high-amplitude delta Scuti stars. In this paper we discuss the double-mode nature of V567 Ophiuchi. It was observed on 15 nights in two consecutive years in order to resolve the long-standing ambiguity related to its secondary period. A frequency analysis of almost 5000 individual single-filtered CCD V measurements resulted in two independent frequencies (f_1=6.6879 c/d and f_2=11.8266 c/d) with a ratio of f_1/f_2=0.565. Earlier data taken from the literature were used to refine the dominant period, and the re-analysis supports the existence of the secondary period. Possible asteroseismological implications are briefly discussed.

The multimode pulsation of the delta Scuti star V784 Cassiopeae

We present an analysis of new Johnson and Stromgren photometric and medium-resolution spectroscopic observations of the delta Scuti type variable star V784 Cassiopeae. The data were obtained in three consecutive years between 1999 and 2001. The period analysis of the light curve resulted in the detection of four frequencies ranging from 9.15 c/d to 15.90 c/d, while there is a suggestion for more, unresolved frequency components, too. The mean Stromgren indices and Hipparcos parallax were combined to calculate the following physical parameters: =7100+-100 K, log g=3.8+-0.1, M_bol=1.50+-0.15 mag. The position of the star in the HR diagram was used to derive evolutionary mass and age yielding to a consistent picture of an evolved delta Scuti star with a mixture of radial plus non-radial modes.

Period-doubling events in the light curve of R Cygni: evidence for chaotic behaviour

A detailed analysis of the century long visual light curve of the long-period Mira star R Cygni is presented and discussed. The data were collected from the publicly available databases of the AFOEV, the BAAVSS and the VSOLJ. The full light curve consists of 26655 individual points obtained between 1901 and 2001. The light curve and its periodicity were analysed with help of the O-C diagram, Fourier analysis and time-frequency analysis. The results demonstrate the limitations of these linear methods. The next step was to investigate the possible presence of low-dimensional chaos in the light curve. For this, a smoothed and noise-filtered signal was created from the averaged data and with help of time delay embedding, we have tried to reconstruct the attractor of the system. The main result is that R Cygni shows such period-doubling events that can be interpreted as caused by a repetitive bifurcation of the chaotic attractor between a period 2T orbit and chaos. The switch between these two states occurs in a certain compact region of the phase space, where the light curve is characterized by ~1500-days long transients. The Lyapunov spectrum was computed for various embedding parameters confirming the chaotic attractor, although the exponents suffer from quite high uncertainty because of the applied approximation. Finally, the light curve is compared with a simple one zone model generated by a third-order differential equation which exhibits well-expressed period-doubling bifurcation. The strong resemblance is another argument for chaotic behaviour. Further studies should address the problem of global flow reconstruction, including the determination of the accurate Lyapunov exponents and dimension.

Nova Cygni 2001/2 = V2275 Cyg

We present an analysis of low- and medium resolution spectra of the very fast nova, Nova Cygni 2001/2 (V2275 Cyg) obtained at nine epochs in August, September and October, 2001. The expansion velocity from hydrogen Balmer lines is found to be 2100 km/s, although early H-alpha profile showed a weak feature at -3500 km/s, too. The overall appearance of the optical spectrum is dominated by broad lines of H, He and N, therefore, the star belongs to the ``He/N'' subclass of novae defined by Williams (1992). Interstellar lines and bands, as well as BV photometry taken from the literature yielded to a fairly high reddening of E(B-V)=1.0+/-0.1 mag. The visual light curve was used to deduce M_V by the maximum magnitude versus rate of decline relationship. The resulting parameters are: t_0=2452141.4(+0.1)(-0.5), t_2=2.9+/-0.5 days, t_3=7+/-1 days, M_V=-9.7+/-0.7 mag. Adopting these parameters, the star lies between 3 kpc and 8 kpc from the Sun.

Spectrophotometry and structural analysis of 5 comets

We discuss the morphology and spectrophotometry of 5 comets visible in August, 2001. We decompose comae into coma profiles and azimuthally renormalized images, in which general and local features are quantitatively comparable. Comet 19P/Borrelly showed a strong gas fan toward the solar direction, but no detectable gas in the tail. Dust in its inner coma was collimated toward the antisolar direction and the tail, with no dust in the outer coma. The contribution of spatial variations structure was moderate, about 35%. Comet 29P Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 was observed in outburst: we detected ``spinning'' jet structures. A high level of dust production resulted in an unusually high Afρ=16600 cm. The spatial variations reached -77%, at the minimum, due in part to a jet and a ring-like structure in 1 arcminute distance from the nucleus. In comet C/2001 A2, we detected a strong post-perihelion increase of dust and gas activity, in which the C_2 profile became one magnitude brighter over a 3-day period. For comets C/2000 SV74 and C/2000 WM1, we present detailed pre-perihelion spectrophotometry and morphological information. Comet C/2000 SV74 showed high dust production (Afρ=1479 cm). Its coma suggests a steady-state outflow of material, while the low contribution of spatial variations support high level activity. The coma of C/2000 WM1 is dominated by solar effects, and CO+ forms the bulk of its gas activity. Despite its large heliocentric distance, we observed a nice tail.

A variable star survey of the open cluster M37

A CCD photometric study of the dense galactic open cluster M37 is presented and discussed. The majority of the analysed data are time-series measurements obtained through an R_C filter. The observations were carried out on seven nights between December 1999 and February 2000, and have led to the discovery of 7 new variable stars in the field. Three of them have been unambiguously identified as W UMa-type eclipsing binaries, while two more are monoperiodic pulsating stars, most probably high-amplitude delta Scuti-type variables. The remaining two stars seem to be long-period eclipsing binaries without firm period determination. Johnson B and V frames have been used to construct a new colour-magnitude (CM) diagram of the cluster, and to find the locations of the new variable stars. The pulsating variables are most likely background objects. The CM diagram is fitted with recent isochrones yielding the main parameters of the cluster.

Photometric observations of 9 Near-Earth Objects

We present new CCD observations of nine Near-Earth Asteroids carried out between February, 1999 and July, 2000. The bulk of the data was acquired through an R_C filter, while the minor planet 11405 was observed without filter. We could determine synodic periods and amplitudes for 5 asteroids, 699: 3.3 h, 0.18 mag; 1866: 2.7 h, 0.12 mag; 1999 JD6: 7.68 h, 1.2 mag; 2000 GK137: 4.84 h, 0.27 mag; 2000 NM: 9.24 h, 0.30 mag. Based on observations taken at different phases, we could infer a phase parameter m of 0.018+/-0.005 for 1865 Cerberus. An epoch-method yielded a sidereal period of 0.27024003(5) d for this object with retrograde rotation. The remaining 3 objects have only partial coverage, thus no firm conclusion on their synodic period is possible.

Photometric observations of distant active comets

We present CCD VR_C observations of 6 distant comets located at heliocentric distances of 3.4--7.2 AU. Time-series data were obtained on three nights in July, 2000 covering 16 hours. Each comet was observed after the perihelion, when a lower activity was expected. Contrary to expectation, we found well-defined circular comae and extended tails visible out to a few (3-5) arcminutes. We detected a quasi-cyclic light variation of C/1999 J2, while C/1999 N4 showed some hints of a more complex variation. C/2000 K1 was constant to +/-0.04 mag during the observing run. The standard V and R_C data were used to estimate nuclear diameters, while the colour indices implied a slighly reddish (V-R=0.68, C/2000 K1), a neutral (V-R=0.47, C/1999 N4) and a slightly bluish (V-R=0.25, C/1999 J2) coma. Simple fits of the surface brightness distributions are also presented enabling order of magnitude estimates of nuclear radii. Beside the time-series observations, further single-shot observations of three faint comets are briefly described.

Distance to the Active Galaxy NGC 6951 via the Type Ia Supernova 2000E

CCD-photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy of the bright supernova SN 2000E in NGC 6951 are presented. Both the light curve extending up to 150 days past maximum and the spectra obtained at 1 month past maximum confirm that SN 2000E is of Type Ia. The reddening of SN 2000E is determined as E(B-V)=0.36+/-0.15, its error is mainly due to uncertainties in the predicted SN (B-V) colour at late epochs. The V(RI)_C light curves are analyzed with the Multi-Colour Light Curve Shape (MLCS) method. The shape of the late light curve suggests that SN 2000E was overluminous by about 0.5 mag at maximum comparing with a fiducial SN Ia. This results in an updated distance of 33+/-8 Mpc of NGC 6951 (corrected for interstellar absorption). The SN-based distance modulus is larger by about +0.7 mag than the previous Tully-Fisher estimates. However, possible systematic errors due to ambiguities in the reddening determination and estimates of the maximum luminosity of SN 2000E may plague the present distance measurement.

The Peculiar Type Ia Supernova 1999by: Spectroscopy at Early Epochs

We present medium resolution (lambda/Delta lambda = 2500) optical spectroscopy of SN 1999by in NGC 2841 made around its light maximum. The depth ratio of the two Si II features at 5800 AA and 6150 AA being R(SiII) approx. 0.63 at maximum indicates that this SN belongs to the peculiar, sub-luminous SNe Ia. Radial velocities inferred from the minimum of the 6150 AA trough reveal a steeper decline of the velocity curve than expected for ``normal'' SNe Ia, consistent with the behavior of published VRI light curves. A revised absolute magnitude of SN 1999by and distance to its host galaxy NGC 2841 is estimated based on the Multi-Color Light Curve Shape (MLCS) method, resulting in M_V(max)=-18.06+/- 0.1 mag and d = 17.1+/-1.2 Mpc, respectively. An approximative linear dependence of the luminosity parameter Delta on R(SiII) is presented.

The radial pulsation of AI Aurigae

We present an analysis of eleven years of Stromgren by photometry of the red semiregular variable star AI Aurigae. An early period determination of 63.9 days is confirmed by the long-term light curve behaviour. The light curve shows semi-regular changes with a mean period of 65 days reaching an amplitude of 0.6 mag in some cycles. The b-y colour changes perfectly parallel the V light curve, suggesting radial oscillation to be the main reason for the observed variations. We estimate the main characteristics of the star (mass, radius, effective temperature) that suggest radial pulsation in fundamental or first overtone mode.

The 2000 outburst of the recurrent nova CI Aquilae: optical spectroscopy

We present low- and medium resolution spectra of the recurrent nova CI Aquilae taken at 14 epochs in May and June, 2000. The overall appearance is similar to other U Sco-type recurrent novae (U Sco, V394 CrA). Medium resolution (R=7000-10000) hydrogen and iron profiles suggest an early expansion velocity of 2000-2500 km/s. The Hαevolution is followed from Dt = -0.6 d to +53 d, starting from a nearly Gaussian shape to a double peaked profile through strong P-Cyg profiles. The interstellar component of the sodium D line and two diffuse interstellar bands put constraints on the interstellar reddening which is estimated to be E(B-V)=0.85\pm0.3. The available visual and CCD-V observations are used to determine t0,t2 and t3. The resulting parameters are: t0=2451669.5\pm0.1, t2=30\pm1 d, t3=36\pm1 d. The recent lightcurve is found to be generally similar to that observed in 1917 with departures as large as 1-2 mag in certain phases. This behaviour is also typical for the U Sco subclass.

Spectrophotometry and period analysis of the sdB eclipsing binary HW Virginis

New CCD observations of the pre-cataclysmic binary HW Virginis are presented and discussed. The R-filtered CCD photometry was supplemented with medium-band (Cousins VRI) spectrophotometry based on low-resolution objective-prism spectra. The period variation is reanalysed by means of the standard O-C technique. The new data support the conclusions of Kilkenny et al. (2000) on the strong and continuous period change. The long-term period variation can be described approximately with two linear branches in the O-C diagram corresponding to a sudden period jump between two constant periods around JD 2448500 (1991). Additional smooth small-scale changes in the period distort the linearity. The present data do not support the hypothetical light-time effect of Cakirli & Devlen (1999). The eclipse depths in V, R, and I do not show colour dependence, which suggests negligible continuum variations due to the cool secondary component in the far-red region (up to 8800 AA). The magnitude of the reflection effect was used to estimate the mean effective temperature of the illuminated hemisphere of the secondary. The result is 13300\pm200 K or 11000\pm200 K, depending on the primary temperature (35000 K or 26000 K). An albedo near unity is implied for the cool component.

A comparison of light and velocity variations in Semiregular variables

NIR velocity variations are compared with simultaneous visual light curves for a sample of late-type semiregular variables (SRV). Precise radial velocity measurements are also presented for the SRV V450 Aql. Our aim is to investigate the nature of the irregular light changes found in these variables. Light and velocity variations are correlated in all stars of our sample. Based on these results we discuss several possibilities to explain the observed behavior. We find that pulsation is responsible for large amplitude variations. In a recent paper Lebzelter (1999) invoked large convective cells to understand observed velocity variations. This possibility is discussed with respect to the observed correlation between light and velocity changes. In the light of these results we investigate the origin of the semiregular variations.

Multiperiodicity in semiregular variables II. Systematic amplitude variations

We present a detailed lightcurve analysis for a sample of bright semiregular variables based on long-term (70--90 years) visual magnitude estimates carried out by amateur astronomers. Fundamental changes of the physical state (amplitude and/or frequency modulations, mode change and switching) are studied with the conventional Fourier- and wavelet analysis. The light curve of the carbon Mira Y Per showing a gradual amplitude decrease has been re-analysed after collecting and adding current data to earlier ones. The time scales of the sudden change and convection are compared and their similar order of magnitude is interpreted to be a possible hint for strong coupling between pulsation and convection. The periods of the biperiodic low-amplitude light curve and their ratios suggest a pulsation in the first and third overtone modes. An alternative explanation of the observed behaviour could be a period halving due to the presence of weak chaos. Beside two examples of repetitive mode changes (AF Cyg and W Cyg) we report three stars with significant amplitude modulations (RY Leo, RX UMa and RY UMa). A simple geometric model of a rotationally induced amplitude modulation in RY UMa is outlined assuming low-order nonradial oscillation, while the observed behaviour of RX UMa and RY Leo is explained as a beating of two closely separated modes of pulsation. This phenomenon is detected unambiguously in V CVn, too. The period ratios found in these stars (1.03-1.10) suggest either high-order overtone or radial+non-radial oscillation.

HV Ursae Majoris, a new contact binary with early-type components

We present the first UBV and uvby photometric observations for the short period variable star HV Ursae Majoris classified as a field RRc variable. The observed differences between the consecutive minima and the lack of colour variations disagree with the RRc-classification and suggest the possible binary nature of HV UMa. In order to reveal the real physical status of this star, we took medium resolution spectra in the red spectral region centered at 6600 A. Spectra obtained around the assumed quadratures clearly showed the presence of the secondary component. An improved ephemeris calculated using our and Hipparcos epoch photometry is Hel. JD_min=2451346.743+/-0.001, P=0.7107523(3) d. A radial velocity curve was determined by modelling the cores of Halpha profiles with two Gaussian components. This approximative approach gave a spectroscopic mass ratio of q_sp=0.19+/-0.03. A modified Lucy model containing a temperature excess of the secondary was fitted to the V light curve. The obtained set of physical parameters together with the parallax measurement indicate that this binary lies far from the galactic plane, and the primary component is an evolved object, probably a subgiant or giant star. The large temperature excess of the secondary may suggest a poor thermal contact between the components due to a relatively recent formation of this contact system.
