Robust quantum metrology with random Majorana constellations

Even the most classical states are still governed by quantum theory. A number of physical systems can be described by their Majorana constellations of points on the surface of a sphere, where concentrated constellations and highly symmetric distributions correspond to the least and most quantum states, respectively. If these points are chosen randomly, how quantum will the resultant state be, on average? We explore this simple conceptual question in detail, investigating the quantum properties of the resulting random states. We find these states to be far from the norm, even in the large-number-of-particles limit, where classical intuition often replaces quantum properties, making random Majorana constellations peculiar and intriguing. Moreover, we study their usefulness in the context of rotation sensing and find numerical evidence of their robustness against dephasing and particle loss. We realize these states experimentally using light's orbital angular momentum degree of freedom and implement arbitrary unitaries with a multiplane light conversion setup to demonstrate the rotation sensing. Our findings open up new possibilities for quantum-enhanced metrology.

Squeezing via self-induced transparency in mercury-filled photonic crystal fibers

We investigate the squeezing of ultrashort pulses using self-induced transparency in a mercury-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. Our focus is on quadrature squeezing at low mercury vapor pressures, with atoms near resonance on the $^3{\rm D}_3 \to 6^3{\rm P}_2$ transition. We vary the atomic density, thus the gas pressure (from 2.72 to 15.7$μ$bar), by adjusting the temperature (from 273~K to 303 ~K). Our results show that achieving squeezing at room temperature, considering both fermionic and bosonic mercury isotopes, requires ultrashort femtosecond pulses. We also determine the optimal detection length for squeezing at different pressures and temperatures.

Optimizing measurement tradeoffs in multiparameter spatial superresolution

The quantum Cramér-Rao bound for the joint estimation of the centroid and the separation between two incoherent point sources cannot be saturated. As such, the optimal measurements for extracting maximal information about both at the same time are not known. In this work, we ascertain these optimal measurements for an arbitrary point spread function, in the most relevant regime of a small separation between the sources. Our measurement can be adjusted within a set of tradeoffs, allowing more information to be extracted from the separation or the centroid while ensuring that the total information is the maximum possible.

Quantum squeezing via self-induced transparency in a photonic crystal fiber

We study the quantum squeezing produced in self-induced transparency in a photonic crystal fiber by performing a fully quantum simulation based on the positive $P$ representation. The amplitude squeezing depends on the area of the initial pulse: when the area is $2π$, there is no energy absorption and no amplitude squeezing. However, when the area is between 2$π$ and 3$π$, one observes amplitude-dependent energy absorption and a significant amount of squeezing. We also investigate the effect of damping and temperature: the results indicate that a heightened atom-pulse coupling, caused by an increase in the spontaneous emission ratio reduces the amplitude squeezing.

Generation of entangled matter qubits in two opposing parabolic mirrors

We propose a scheme for the remote preparation of entangled matter qubits in free space. For this purpose, a setup of two opposing parabolic mirrors is considered, each one with a single ion trapped at its focus. To get the required entanglement in this extreme multimode scenario, we take advantage of the spontaneous decay, which is usually considered as an apparent nuisance. Using semiclassical methods, we derive an efficient photon-path representation to deal with this problem. We also present a thorough examination of the experimental feasibility of the scheme. The vulnerabilities arising in realistic implementations reduce the success probability, but leave the fidelity of the generated state unaltered. Our proposal thus allows for the generation of high-fidelity entangled matter qubits with high rate.

QED with a parabolic mirror

We investigate the quantum electrodynamics of a single two-level atom located at the focus of a parabolic cavity. We first work out the modifications of the spontaneous emission induced by the presence of this boundary in the optical regime, where the dipole and the rotating-wave approximations apply. Furthermore, the single-photon state that leaves the cavity asymptotically is determined. The corresponding time-reversed single-photon quantum state is capable of exciting the atom in this extreme multimode scenario with near-unit probability. Using semiclassical methods, we derive a photon-path representation for the relevant transition amplitudes and show that it constitutes a satisfactory approximation for a wide range of wavelengths.

Central-moment description of polarization for quantum states of light

We present a moment expansion method for the systematic characterization of the polarization properties of quantum states of light. Specifically, we link the method to the measurements of the Stokes operator in different directions on the Poincaré sphere, and provide a method of polarization tomography without resorting to full state tomography. We apply these ideas to the experimental first- and second-order polarization characterization of some two-photon quantum states. In addition, we show that there are classes of states whose polarization characteristics are dominated not by their first-order moments (i.e., the Stokes vector) but by higher-order polarization moments.
