CP violation in the effective action of the Standard Model

Following a suggestion by Smit, the CP odd terms of the effective action of the Standard Model, obtained by integration of quarks and leptons, are computed to sixth order within a strict covariant derivative expansion approach. No other approximations are made. The final result so derived includes all Standard Model gauge fields and Higgs. Remarkably, at the order considered in this work, all parity violating contributions turn out to be zero. Non vanishing CP violating terms are obtained in the C-odd P-even sector. These are several orders of magnitude larger than perturbative estimates. Various unexpected regularities in the final result are noted.

The s-wave charmed baryon resonances from a coupled-channel approach with heavy quark symmetry

We study charmed baryon resonances which are generated dynamically within a unitary meson-baryon coupled channel model that treats the heavy pseudoscalar and vector mesons on equal footing as required by heavy-quark symmetry. It is an extension of recent SU(4) models with t-channel vector meson exchanges to a SU(8) spin-flavor scheme, but differs considerably from the SU(4) approach in how the strong breaking of the flavor symmetry is implemented. Some of our dynamically generated states can be readily assigned to recently observed baryon resonances, while others do not have a straightforward identification and require the compilation of more data as well as an extension of the model to d-wave meson-baryon interactions and p-wave coupling in the neglected s- and u-channel diagrams. Of several novelties, we find that the Lambda_c(2595), which emerged as a ND quasi-bound state within the SU(4) approaches, becomes predominantly a ND* quasi-bound state in the present SU(8) scheme.

The Powers of Deconfinement

The trace anomaly of gluodynamics encodes the breakdown of classical scale invariance due to interactions around the deconfinement phase transition. While it is expected that at high temperatures perturbation theory becomes applicable we show that current lattice calculations are far from the perturbative regime and are dominated instead by inverse even power corrections in the temperature, while the total perturbative contribution is estimated to be extremely small and compatible with zero within error bars. We provide an interpretation in terms of dimension-two gluon condensate of the dimensionally reduced theory which value agrees with a similar analysis of power corrections from available lattice data for the renormalized Polyakov loop and the heavy quark-antiquark free energy in the deconfined phase of QCD.

Direct construction of the effective action of chiral gauge fermions in the anomalous sector

The anomaly implies an obstruction to a fully chiral covariant calculation of the effective action in the abnormal parity sector of chiral theories. The standard approach then is to reconstruct the anomalous effective action from its covariant current. In this work we use a recently introduced formulation which allows to directly construct the non trivial chiral invariant part of the effective action within a fully covariant formalism. To this end we develop an appropriate version of Chan's approach to carry out the calculation within the derivative expansion. The result to four derivatives, i.e., to leading order in two and four dimensions and next-to-leading order in two dimensions, is explicitly worked out. Fairly compact expressions are found for these terms.

The invariant factor of the chiral determinant

The coupling of spin 0 and spin 1 external fields to Dirac fermions defines a theory which displays gauge chiral symmetry. Quantum mechanically, functional integration of the fermions yields the determinant of the Dirac operator, known as the chiral determinant. Its modulus is chiral invariant but not so its phase, which carries the chiral anomaly through the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. Here we find the remarkable result that, upon removal from the chiral determinant of this known anomalous part, the remaining chiral invariant factor is just the square root of the determinant of a local covariant operator of the Klein-Gordon type. This procedure bypasses the integrability obstruction allowing to write down a functional that correctly reproduces both the modulus and the phase of the chiral determinant. The technique is illustrated by computing the effective action in two dimensions at leading order in the derivative expansion. The results previously obtained by indirect methods are indeed reproduced.

Trace Anomaly and dimension two gluon condensate above the phase transition

The dimension two gluon condensate has been used previously within a simple phenomenological model to describe power corrections from available lattice data for the renormalized Polyakov loop and the heavy quark-antiquark free energy in the deconfined phase of QCD (hep-ph/0505215,hep-ph/0702055). The QCD trace anomaly of gluodynamics also shows unequivocal inverse temperature power corrections which may be encoded as dimension two gluon condensate. We analyze lattice data of the trace anomaly and compare with other determinations of the condensate from previous references, yielding roughly similar numerical values.

Chiral SU(3) Bethe Salpeter Model: Extension to SU(6) and SU(8) Spin-Flavor Symmetries

Consistent SU(6) and SU(8) spin-flavor extensions of the SU(3) flavor Weinberg-Tomozawa (WT) meson-baryon chiral Lagrangian are constructed, which incorporate vector meson degrees of freedom. In the charmless sector, the on-shell approximation to the Bethe-Salpeter (BS) approach successfully reproduces previous SU(3) WT results for the lowest-lying s--wave negative parity baryon resonances. It also provides some information on the dynamics of heavier ones and of the lightest d-wave negative parity resonances, as e.g. the Lambda(1520). For charmed baryons the scheme is consistent with heavy quark symmetry, and our preliminary results in the strangeness-less charm C=+1 sector describe the main features of the three-star J^P=1/2^- Lambda_c(2595) and J^P=3/2^- Lambda_c(2625) resonances. We also find a second broad J^P=1/2^- state close to the Lambda_c(2595)

Derivative expansion of the heat kernel in curved space

The heat kernel in curved space-time is computed to fourth order in a strict expansion in the number of covariant derivatives. The computation is made for arbitrary non abelian gauge and scalar fields and for the Riemann connection in the coordinate sector. The expressions obtained hold for arbitrary tensor representations of the matter field. Complete results are presented for the diagonal matrix elements and for the trace of the heat kernel operator. In addition, Chan's formula is extended to curved space-time. As a byproduct, the bosonic effective action is also obtained to fourth order.

Existence of positive representations for complex weights

The necessity of computing integrals with complex weights over manifolds with a large number of dimensions, e.g., in some field theoretical settings, poses a problem for the use of Monte Carlo techniques. Here it is shown that very general complex weight functions P(x) on R^d can be represented by real and positive weights p(z) on C^d, in the sense that for any observable f, _P = _p, f(z) being the analytical extension of f(x). The construction is extended to arbitrary compact Lie groups.

Resonances and the Weinberg--Tomozawa 56-baryon --35-meson interaction

Vector meson degrees of freedom are incorporated into the Weinberg-Tomozawa (WT) meson-baryon chiral Lagrangian by using a scheme which relies on spin--flavor SU(6) symmetry. The corresponding Bethe-Salpeter approximation successfully reproduces previous SU(3)--flavor WT results for the lowest-lying s--wave negative parity baryon resonances, and it also provides some information on the dynamics of the heavier ones. Moreover, it also predicts the existence of an isoscalar spin-parity $\frac32^-$ $K^*N$ bound state (strangeness +1) with a mass around 1.7--1.8 GeV, unstable through $K^*$ decay. Neglecting d-wave KN decays, this state turns out to be quite narrow ($Γ\le 15$ MeV) and it might provide clear signals in reactions like $γp \to \bar K^0 p K^+π^-$ by looking at the three body $p K^+π^-$ invariant mass.

Meson-Baryon s-wave Resonances with Strangeness -3

Starting from a consistent SU(6) extension of the Weinberg-Tomozawa (WT) meson-baryon chiral Lagrangian (Phys. Rev. D74 (2006) 034025), we study the s-wave meson-baryon resonances in the strangeness S=-3 and negative parity sector. Those resonances are generated by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation with the WT interaction used as kernel. The considered mesons are those of the 35-SU(6)-plet, which includes the pseudoscalar (PS) octet of pions and the vector (V) nonet of the rho meson. For baryons we consider the 56-SU(6)-plet, made of the 1/2+ octet of the nucleon and the 3/2+ decuplet of the Delta. Quantum numbers I(J^P)=0(3/2^-) are suggested for the experimental resonances Omega*(2250)- and Omega*(2380)-. Among other, resonances with I=1 are found, with minimal quark content sss\bar{l}l', being s the strange quark and l, l' any of the the light up or down quarks. A clear signal for such a pentaquark would be a baryonic resonance with strangeness -3 and electric charge of -2 or 0, in proton charge units. We suggest looking for K- Xi- resonances with masses around 2100 and 2240 MeV in the sector 1(1/2^-), and for pi Omega- and K- Xi*- resonances with masses around 2260 MeV in the sector 1(3/2^-).

Large $N$ Weinberg-Tomozawa interaction and spin-flavor symmetry

The construction of an extended version of the Weinberg-Tomozawa Lagrangian, in which baryons and mesons form spin-flavor multiplets, is reviewed and some of its properties discussed, for an arbitrary number of colors and flavors. The coefficient tables of spin-flavor irreducible representations related by crossing between the $s$-, $t$- and $u$-channels are explicitly constructed.

Dimension 2 condensates and Polyakov Chiral Quark Models

We address a possible relation between the expectation value of the Polyakov loop in pure gluodynamics and full QCD based on Polyakov Chiral Quark Models where constituent quarks and the Polyakov loop are coupled in a minimal way. To this end we use a center symmetry breaking Gaussian model for the Polyakov loop distribution which accurately reproduces gluodynamics data above the phase transition in terms of dimension 2 gluon condensate. The role played by the quantum and local nature of the Polyakov loop is emphasized.

The Quantum and Local Polyakov loop in Chiral Quark Models at Finite Temperature

We describe results for the confinement-deconfinement phase transition as predicted by the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model where the local and quantum Polyakov loop is coupled to the constituent quarks in a minimal way (PNJL). We observe that the leading correlation of two Polyakov loops describes the chiral transition accurately. The effects of the current quark mass on the transition are also analysed.

The method of covariant symbols in curved space-time

Diagonal matrix elements of pseudodifferential operators are needed in order to compute effective Lagrangians and currents. For this purpose the method of symbols is often used, which however lacks manifest covariance. In this work the method of covariant symbols, introduced by Pletnev and Banin, is extended to curved space-time with arbitrary gauge and coordinate connections. For the Riemannian connection we compute the covariant symbols corresponding to external fields, the covariant derivative and the Laplacian, to fourth order in a covariant derivative expansion. This allows to obtain the covariant symbol of general operators to the same order. The procedure is illustrated by computing the diagonal matrix element of a nontrivial operator to second order. Applications of the method are discussed.

Polyakov loop in chiral quark models at finite temperature

We describe how the inclusion of the gluonic Polyakov loop incorporates large gauge invariance and drastically modifies finite temperature calculations in chiral quark models after color neutral states are singled out. This generates an effective theory of quarks and Polyakov loops as basic degrees of freedom. We find a strong suppression of finite temperature effects in hadronic observables triggered by approximate triality conservation (Polyakov cooling), so that while the center symmetry breaking is exponentially small with the constituent quark mass, chiral symmetry restoration is exponentially small with the pion mass. To illustrate the point we compute some low energy observables at finite temperature and show that the finite temperature corrections to the low energy coefficients are $N_c$ suppressed due to color average of the Polyakov loop. Our analysis also shows how the phenomenology of chiral quark models at finite temperature can be made compatible with the expectations of chiral perturbation theory. The implications for the simultaneous center symmetry breaking-chiral symmetry restoration phase transition are also discussed.

Chiral Lagrangian at finite temperature from the Polyakov-Chiral Quark Model

We analyze the consequences of the inclusion of the gluonic Polyakov loop in chiral quark models at finite temperature. Specifically, the low-energy effective chiral Lagrangian from two such quark models is computed. The tree level vacuum energy density, quark condensate, pion decay constant and Gasser-Leutwyler coefficients are found to acquire a temperature dependence. This dependence is, however, exponentially small for temperatures below the mass gap in the full unquenched calculation. The introduction of the Polyakov loop and its quantum fluctuations is essential to achieve this result and also the correct large $N_c$ counting for the thermal corrections. We find that new coefficients are introduced at ${\cal O}(p^4)$ to account for the Lorentz breaking at finite temperature. As a byproduct, we obtain the effective Lagrangian which describes the coupling of the Polyakov loop to the Goldstone bosons.
