The 1st Fermi Lat Supernova Remnant Catalog

To uniformly determine the properties of supernova remnants (SNRs) at high energies, we have developed the first systematic survey at energies from 1 to 100 GeV using data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope. Based on the spatial overlap of sources detected at GeV energies with SNRs known from radio surveys, we classify 30 sources as likely GeV SNRs. We also report 14 marginal associations and 245 flux upper limits. A mock catalog in which the positions of known remnants are scrambled in Galactic longitude, allows us to determine an upper limit of 22% on the number of GeV candidates falsely identified as SNRs. We have also developed a method to estimate spectral and spatial systematic errors arising from the diffuse interstellar emission model, a key component of all Galactic Fermi LAT analyses. By studying remnants uniformly in aggregate, we measure the GeV properties common to these objects and provide a crucial context for the detailed modeling of individual SNRs. Combining our GeV results with multiwavelength (MW) data, including radio, X-ray, and TeV, demonstrates the need for improvements to previously sufficient, simple models describing the GeV and radio emission from these objects. We model the GeV and MW emission from SNRs in aggregate to constrain their maximal contribution to observed Galactic cosmic rays.

Observation of $B^{0} \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{(*)-}$

We report the first observation of the decays $B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{(*)-}$. The data sample of $711$ fb$^{-1}$ used in this analysis corresponds to $772$ million $B\bar{B}$ pairs, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We observe $19.8σ$ and $10.8σ$ excesses of events for the two decay modes and measure the branching fractions of $B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{-}$ and $B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{*-}$ to be $(25.1\pm2.6\pm3.5)\times10^{-6}$ and $(33.6\pm6.3\pm4.4)\times10^{-6}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are not compatible with the predictions based on the generalized factorization approach. In addition, a threshold enhancement in the di-baryon ($p\barΛ$) system is observed, consistent with that observed in similar $B$ decays.

Anomalous magneto-elastic and charge doping effects in thallium-doped BaFe2As2

Within the BaFe2As2 crystal lattice, we partially substitute thallium for barium and report the effects of interlayer coupling in Ba1-xTlxFe2As2 crystals. We demonstrate the unusual effects of magneto-elastic coupling and charge doping in this iron-arsenide material, whereby Neel temperature rises with small x, and then falls with additional x. Specifically, we find that Neel and structural transitions in BaFe2As2 (TN =Ts= 133 K) increase for x=0.05 (TN = 138 K, Ts = 140 K) from magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity, and neutron diffraction measurements. Evidence from single crystal X-ray diffraction and first principles calculations attributes the stronger magnetism in x=0.05 to magneto-elastic coupling related to the shorter intraplanar Fe-Fe bond distance. With further thallium substitution, the transition temperatures decrease for x = 0.09 (TN = Ts = 131 K), and this is due to charge doping. We illustrate that small changes related to 3d transition-metal state can have profound effects on magnetism.

Inclusive cross sections for pairs of identified light charged hadrons and for single protons in $e^+e^-$ at $\sqrt{s}=$ 10.58 GeV

We report the first double differential cross sections of two charged pions and kaons ($e^+e^- \rightarrow hhX$) in electron-positron annihilation as a function of the fractional energies of the two hadrons for any charge and hadron combination. The dependence of these di-hadron cross sections on the topology (same, opposite-hemisphere or anywhere) is also studied with the help of the event shape variable thrust and its axis. The ratios of these di-hadron cross sections for different charges and hadron combinations directly shed light on the contributing fragmentation functions. For example, we find that the ratio of same-sign pion pairs over opposite-sign pion pairs drops toward higher fractional energies where disfavored fragmentation is expected to be suppressed. These di-hadron results are obtained from a $655\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Extending the previously published single-pion and single-kaon cross sections, single-proton ($e^+e^- \rightarrow pX$) cross sections are extracted from a $159\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sub-sample.

Anomalous transport and thermoelectric performances of CuAgSe compounds

The copper silver selenide has two phases: the low-temperature semimetal phase (α-CuAgSe) and high-temperature phonon-glass superionic phase (\b{eta}-CuAgSe). In this work, the electric transport and thermoelectric properties of the two phases are investigated. It is revealed that the \b{eta}-CuAgSe is a p-type semiconductor and exhibits low thermal conductivity while the α-CuAgSe shows metallic conduction with dominant n-type carriers and low electrical resistivity. The thermoelectric figure of merit zT of the polycrystalline \b{eta}-CuAgSe at 623 K is ~0.95, suggesting that superionic CuAgSe can be a promising thermoelectric candidate in the intermediate temperature range.

Strong enhancement of conventional superconductivity near a quantum critical point of (Ca,Sr)_3Ir_4Sn_13

Competing electronic states are found in the large majority of unconventional superconductors, including high-Tc cuprates, iron based superconductors and many heavy fermion systems. The complex interplay is reflected in phase diagrams as a function of doping or other tuning parameters involving besides superconducting other phases (often magnetic) and quantum critical points. Superconductivity is also found in the vicinity of charge density wave (CDW) order in phase diagrams reminiscent of superconductivity mediated by magnetic fluctuations. There is however less knowledge about the interplay of superconductivity and CDW compared to the magnetic analogon. Here we report about microscopic studies by muon spin rotation as a function of pressure of the Ca_3Ir_4Sn_13 and Sr_3Ir_4Sn_13 cubic compounds, which display superconductivity and a structural phase transition associated with the formation of a CDW. We find a strong enhancement of the superfluid density and of the coupling strength above a pressure of about 1.6 GPa giving direct evidence of the presence of a quantum critical point separating a superconducting phase coexisting with CDW from a pure superconducting phase. The superconducting order parameter in both phases are found to have the same s-wave symmetry. In spite of the conventional phonon-mediated BCS character of this compound, the dependence of the effective superfluid density on the critical temperature puts this system in the "Uemura" plot close to unconventional superconductors.

Multiwavelength Evidence for Quasi-periodic Modulation in the Gamma-ray Blazar PG 1553+113

We report for the first time a gamma-ray and multi-wavelength nearly-periodic oscillation in an active galactic nucleus. Using the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) we have discovered an apparent quasi-periodicity in the gamma-ray flux (E >100 MeV) from the GeV/TeV BL Lac object PG 1553+113. The marginal significance of the 2.18 +/-0.08 year-period gamma-ray cycle is strengthened by correlated oscillations observed in radio and optical fluxes, through data collected in the OVRO, Tuorla, KAIT, and CSS monitoring programs and Swift UVOT. The optical cycle appearing in ~10 years of data has a similar period, while the 15 GHz oscillation is less regular than seen in the other bands. Further long-term multi-wavelength monitoring of this blazar may discriminate among the possible explanations for this quasi-periodicity.

Generation of High-order Group-velocity-locked Vector Solitons

We report numerical simulations on the high-order group-velocity-locked vector soliton (GVLVS) generation based on the fundamental GVLVS. The high-order GVLVS generated is characterized with a two-humped pulse along one polarization while a single-humped pulse along the orthogonal polarization. The phase difference between the two humps could be 180 degree. It is found that by appropriate setting the time separation between the two components of the fundamental GVLVS, the high-order GVLVS with different pulse width and pulse intensity could be obtained. 1+2 and 2+2 type high-order GVLVS could be either obtained.

Search for extended gamma-ray emission from the Virgo galaxy cluster with Fermi-LAT

Galaxy clusters are one of the prime sites to search for dark matter (DM) annihilation signals. Depending on the substructure of the DM halo of a galaxy cluster and the cross sections for DM annihilation channels, these signals might be detectable by the latest generation of $γ$-ray telescopes. Here we use three years of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) data, which are the most suitable for searching for very extended emission in the vicinity of nearby Virgo galaxy cluster. Our analysis reveals statistically significant extended emission which can be well characterized by a uniformly emitting disk profile with a radius of 3°that moreover is offset from the cluster center. We demonstrate that the significance of this extended emission strongly depends on the adopted interstellar emission model (IEM) and is most likely an artifact of our incomplete description of the IEM in this region. We also search for and find new point source candidates in the region. We then derive conservative upper limits on the velocity-averaged DM pair annihilation cross section from Virgo. We take into account the potential $γ$-ray flux enhancement due to DM sub-halos and its complex morphology as a merging cluster. For DM annihilating into $b\overline{b}$, assuming a conservative sub-halo model setup, we find limits that are between 1 and 1.5 orders of magnitude above the expectation from the thermal cross section for $m_{\mathrm{DM}}\lesssim100\,\mathrm{GeV}$. In a more optimistic scenario, we exclude $\langle σv \rangle\sim3\times10^{-26}\,\mathrm{cm^{3}\,s^{-1}}$ for $m_{\mathrm{DM}}\lesssim40\,\mathrm{GeV}$ for the same channel. Finally, we derive upper limits on the $γ$-ray-flux produced by hadronic cosmic-ray interactions in the inter cluster medium. We find that the volume-averaged cosmic-ray-to-thermal pressure ratio is less than $\sim6\%$.

The Third Catalog of Active Galactic Nuclei Detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope

The third catalog of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detected by the Fermi-LAT (3LAC) is presented. It is based on the third Fermi-LAT catalog (3FGL) of sources detected between 100 MeV and 300 GeV with a Test Statistic (TS) greater than 25, between 2008 August 4 and 2012 July 31. The 3LAC includes 1591 AGNs located at high Galactic latitudes (|b|>10°), a 71% increase over the second catalog based on 2 years of data. There are 28 duplicate associations, thus 1563 of the 2192 high-latitude gamma-ray sources of the 3FGL catalog are AGNs. Most of them (98%) are blazars. About half of the newly detected blazars are of unknown type, i.e., they lack spectroscopic information of sufficient quality to determine the strength of their emission lines. Based on their gamma-ray spectral properties, these sources are evenly split between flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL~Lacs. The most abundant detected BL~Lacs are of the high-synchrotron-peaked (HSP) type. About 50% of the BL~Lacs have no measured redshifts. A few new rare outliers (HSP-FSRQs and high-luminosity HSP BL~Lacs) are reported. The general properties of the 3LAC sample confirm previous findings from earlier catalogs. The fraction of 3LAC blazars in the total population of blazars listed in BZCAT remains non-negligible even at the faint ends of the BZCAT-blazar radio, optical and X-ray flux distributions, which is a clue that even the faintest known blazars could eventually shine in gamma rays at LAT-detection levels. The energy-flux distributions of the different blazar populations are in good agreement with extrapolation from earlier catalogs.

PSR J1906+0722: An Elusive Gamma-ray Pulsar

We report the discovery of PSR J1906+0722, a gamma-ray pulsar detected as part of a blind survey of unidentified Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) sources being carried out on the volunteer distributed computing system, Einstein@Home. This newly discovered pulsar previously appeared as the most significant remaining unidentified gamma-ray source without a known association in the second Fermi-LAT source catalog (2FGL) and was among the top ten most significant unassociated sources in the recent third catalog (3FGL). PSR J1906+0722 is a young, energetic, isolated pulsar, with a spin frequency of $8.9$ Hz, a characteristic age of $49$ kyr, and spin-down power $1.0 \times 10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$. In 2009 August it suffered one of the largest glitches detected from a gamma-ray pulsar ($Δf / f \approx 4.5\times10^{-6}$). Remaining undetected in dedicated radio follow-up observations, the pulsar is likely radio-quiet. An off-pulse analysis of the gamma-ray flux from the location of PSR J1906+0722 revealed the presence of an additional nearby source, which may be emission from the interaction between a neighboring supernova remnant and a molecular cloud. We discuss possible effects which may have hindered the detection of PSR J1906+0722 in previous searches and describe the methods by which these effects were mitigated in this survey. We also demonstrate the use of advanced timing methods for estimating the positional, spin and glitch parameters of difficult-to-time pulsars such as this.

A stable partitioned FSI algorithm for incompressible flow and deforming beams

An added-mass partitioned (AMP) algorithm is described for solving fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems coupling incompressible flows with thin elastic structures undergoing finite deformations. The new AMP scheme is fully second-order accurate and stable, without sub-time-step iterations, even for very light structures when added-mass effects are strong. The fluid, governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, is solved in velocity-pressure form using a fractional-step method; large deformations are treated with a mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian approach on deforming composite grids. The motion of the thin structure is governed by a generalized Euler-Bernoulli beam model, and these equations are solved in a Lagrangian frame using two approaches, one based on finite differences and the other on finite elements. Special treatment of the AMP condition is required to couple the finite-element beam solver with the finite-difference-based fluid solver, and two coupling approaches are described. A normal-mode stability analysis is performed for a linearized model problem involving a beam separating two fluid domains, and it is shown that the AMP scheme is stable independent of the ratio of the mass of the fluid to that of the structure. A traditional partitioned (TP) scheme using a Dirichlet-Neumann coupling for the same model problem is shown to be unconditionally unstable if the added mass of the fluid is too large. A series of benchmark problems of increasing complexity are considered to illustrate the behavior of the AMP algorithm, and to compare the behavior with that of the TP scheme. The results of all these benchmark problems verify the stability and accuracy of the AMP scheme. Results for one benchmark problem modeling blood flow in a deforming artery are also compared with corresponding results available in the literature.

Noisy Transitional Flows in Imperfect Channels

Here, we study noisy transitional flows in imperfect millimeter-scale channels. For probing the flows, we use microcantilever sensors embedded in the channel walls. We perform experiments in two nominally identical channels. The different set of imperfections in the two channels result in two random flows in which high-order moments of near-wall fluctuations differ by orders of magnitude. Surprisingly however, the lowest order statistics in both cases appear qualitatively similar and can be described by a proposed noisy Landau equation for a slow mode. The noise, regardless of its origin, regularizes the Landau singularity of the relaxation time and makes transitions driven by different noise sources appear similar.

Search for Early Gamma-ray Production in Supernovae Located in a Dense Circumstellar Medium with the Fermi LAT

Supernovae (SNe) exploding in a dense circumstellar medium (CSM) are hypothesized to accelerate cosmic rays in collisionless shocks and emit GeV gamma rays and TeV neutrinos on a time scale of several months. We perform the first systematic search for gamma-ray emission in Fermi LAT data in the energy range from 100 MeV to 300 GeV from the ensemble of 147 SNe Type IIn exploding in dense CSM. We search for a gamma-ray excess at each SNe location in a one year time window. In order to enhance a possible weak signal, we simultaneously study the closest and optically brightest sources of our sample in a joint-likelihood analysis in three different time windows (1 year, 6 months and 3 months). For the most promising source of the sample, SN 2010jl (PTF10aaxf), we repeat the analysis with an extended time window lasting 4.5 years. We do not find a significant excess in gamma rays for any individual source nor for the combined sources and provide model-independent flux upper limits for both cases. In addition, we derive limits on the gamma-ray luminosity and the ratio of gamma-ray-to-optical luminosity ratio as a function of the index of the proton injection spectrum assuming a generic gamma-ray production model. Furthermore, we present detailed flux predictions based on multi-wavelength observations and the corresponding flux upper limit at 95% confidence level (CL) for the source SN 2010jl (PTF10aaxf).

Upward curvature of the upper critical field and the V-shaped pressure dependence of $T_c$ in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor PbTaSe$_2$

The temperature evolution of the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor PbTaSe$_2$ was determined via resistivity measurements down to 0.5 K. A pronounced positive curvature in the $H_{c2}$-$T$ phase diagram was observed in the whole temperature range below $T_c$. The Seebeck coefficient $S(T)$ in the temperature range 5K$\leq$$T$$\leq$350K was found to be negative in sign, modest in magnitude and non-linear in temperature. In addition, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ under hydrostatic pressure shows a marked non-monotonic variation, decreasing initially with the applied pressure up to $P_c$$\sim$5-10 kbar but then rising with further pressurization. The underlying physical mechanisms of all these findings have been discussed.

Proximate Kitaev Quantum Spin Liquid Behaviour in α-RuCl$_3$

Topological states of matter such as quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are of great interest because of their remarkable predicted properties including protection of quantum information and the emergence of Majorana fermions. Such QSLs, however, have proven difficult to identify experimentally. The most promising approach is to study their exotic nature via the wave-vector and intensity dependence of their dynamical response in neutron scattering. A major search has centered on iridate materials which are proposed to realize the celebrated Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice - a prototypical topological QSL system in two dimensions (2D). The difficulties of iridium for neutron measurements have, however, impeded progress significantly. Here we provide experimental evidence that a material based on ruthenium, α-RuCl$_3$ realizes the same Kitaev physics but is highly amenable to neutron investigation. Our measurements confirm the requisite strong spin-orbit coupling, and a low temperature magnetic order that matches the predicted phase proximate to the QSL. We also show that stacking faults, inherent to the highly 2D nature of the material, readily explain some puzzling results to date. Measurements of the dynamical response functions, especially at energies and temperatures above that where interlayer effects are manifest, are naturally accounted for in terms of deconfinement physics expected for QSLs. Via a comparison to the recently calculated dynamics from gauge flux excitations and Majorana fermions of the pure Kitaev model we propose α-RuCl$_3$ as the prime candidate for experimental realization of fractionalized Kitaev physics.

Carrier transport in reverse-biased graphene/semiconductor Schottky junctions

Reverse-biased graphene (Gr)/semiconductor Schottky diodes exhibit much enhanced sensitivity for gas sensing. However, carrier transport across the junctions is not fully understood yet. Here, Gr/SiC, Gr/GaAs and Gr/Si Schottky junctions under reverse-bias are investigated by temperature-dependent current-voltage measurements. A reduction in barrier height with increasing reverse-bias is observed for all junctions, suggesting electric-field enhanced thermionic emission. Further analysis of the field dependence of the reverse current reveals that while carrier transport in Gr/SiC Schottky junctions follows the Poole-Frenkel mechanism, it deviates from both the Poole-Frankel and Schottky mechanisms in Gr/Si and Gr/GaAs junctions, particularly for low temperatures and fields.

Inhomogeneity in barrier height at graphene/Si (GaAs) Schottky junctions

Graphene interfaced with a semiconductor forms a Schottky junction with rectifying properties, however, fluctuations in the Schottky barrier height are often observed. In this work, Schottky junctions are fabricated by transferring chemical vapor deposited monolayer graphene onto n-type Si and GaAs substrates. Temperature dependence of the barrier height and ideality factor are obtained by current-voltage measurements between 215 and 350 K. An increase in the zero bias barrier height and decrease in the ideality factor are observed with increasing temperature for both junctions. Such behavior is attributed to barrier inhomogeneities that arise from interfacial states as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. Assuming a Gaussian distribution of the barrier heights, mean values of 1.14(+/-)0.14 eV and 0.76(+/-)0.10 eV are found for graphene Si and GaAs junctions, respectively. These findings provide insights into the barrier height inhomogeneities in graphene based Schottky junctions, essential for the integration of graphene with Si and GaAs device architectures.
