Stark effect of the Au(111) and Cu(111) surface states

We present a low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of the Au(111) and of the Cu(111) surface states showing that their binding energy increases when the tip is approached towards the surface. This result, supported by a one-dimensional model calculation and by a comparison to existing photoemission spectroscopy measurements, confirms the existence of a tip-induced Stark effect as previously reported for Ag(111) [L. Limot et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 196801 (2003)], and suggests that this effect is a general feature of scanning tunneling spectroscopy.

Kondo Effect and Surface-State Electrons

We have used low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy and atomic manipulation to study the role of surface-state electrons in the Kondo effect of an isolated cobalt atom adsorbed on Ag(111). We show that the observed Kondo signature remains unchanged in close proximity of a monoatomic step, where the local density of states of the surface-state electrons is strongly perturbed. This result indicates a minor role for surface-state electrons in the Kondo effect of cobalt, compared to bulk electrons. A possible explanation for our findings is presented.

Surface State Stark Shift in a Scanning Tunneling Microscope

We report a quantitative low-temperature Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS)study on the Ag(111) surface state over an unprecedented range of currents (50 pA to 6 $μ$A)through which we can tune the electric field in the tunnel junction of the microscope. We show that in STS a sizeable Stark effect causes a shift of the surface state binding energy $E_{0}$.Data taken are reproduced by a one-dimensional potential model calculation, and are found to yield a Stark-free energy $E_{0}$ in agreement with recent state-of-the-art Photoemission Spectroscopy measurements.

Susceptibility and dilution effects of the kagome bi-layer geometrically frustrated network. A Ga-NMR study of SrCr_(9p)Ga_(12-9p)O_(19)

We present an extensive gallium NMR study of the geometrically frustrated kagome bi-layer compound SrCr_(9p)Ga_(12-9p)O_(19) (Cr^3+, S=3/2) over a broad Cr-concentration range (.72<p<.95). This allows us to probe locally the kagome bi-layer susceptibility and separate the intrinsic properties due to the geometric frustration from those related to the site dilution. Our major findings are: 1) The intrinsic kagome bi-layer susceptibility exhibits a maximum in temperature at 40-50 K and is robust to a dilution as high as ~20%. The maximum reveals the development of short range antiferromagnetic correlations; 2) At low-T, a highly dynamical state induces a strong wipe-out of the NMR intensity, regardless of dilution; 3) The low-T upturn observed in the macroscopic susceptibility is associated to paramagnetic defects which stem from the dilution of the kagome bi-layer. The low-T analysis of the NMR lineshape suggests that the defect can be associated with a staggered spin-response to the vacancies on the kagome bi-layer. This, altogether with the maximum in the kagome bi-layer susceptibility, is very similar to what is observed in most low-dimensional antiferromagnetic correlated systems; 4) The spin glass-like freezing observed at T_g=2-4 K is not driven by the dilution-induced defects.

Ga-NMR local susceptibility of the kagome-based magnet SrCr_9pGa_(12-9p)O_19. A high temperature study

We report a high-$T$ Ga-NMR study in the kagome-based antiferromagnetic compound SrCr$_{9p}$Ga$_{12-9p}$O$_{19}$ ($.81\leq p\leq .96$), and present a refined mean-field analysis of the high T local NMR susceptibility of Cr frustrated moments. We find that the intralayer kagome coupling is $J=86(6)$ K, and the interlayer coupling through non-kagome Cr moments is $J^{\prime }=69(7)$ K. The $J^{\prime}/J=0.80(1)$ ratio confirms the common belief that the frustrated entity is a pyrochlore slab.

Ga NMR study of the local susceptibility in SrCr8Ga4O19: pseudogap and paramagnetic defects

We present the first Ga(4f) NMR study of the Cr susceptibility in the archetype of Kagome based frustrated antiferromagnets, SrCr$_{8}$Ga$_{4}$O$_{19}$. Our major finding is that the susceptibility of the frustrated lattice goes through a maximum around 50 K. Our data also supports the existence of paramagnetic ``clusters'' of spins, responsible for the Curie behavior observed in the macroscopic susceptibility at low T. These results set novel features for the constantly debated physics of geometrically frustrated magnets.
