A spectral method for dispersive solutions of the nonlocal Sine-Gordon equation

Moved by the need for rigorous and reliable numerical tools for the analysis of peridynamic materials, the authors propose a model able to capture the dispersive features of nonlocal soliton-like solutions obtained by a peridynamic formulation of the Sine-Gordon equation. The analysis of the Cauchy problem associated to the peridynamic Sine-Gordon equation with local Neumann boundary condition is performed in this work through a spectral method on Chebyshev polynomials nodes joined with the Stormer-Verlet scheme for the time evolution. The choice for using the spectral method resides in the resulting reachable numerical accuracy, while, indeed, Chebyshev polynomials allow straightforward implementation of local boundary conditions. Several numerical experiments are proposed for thoroughly describe the ability of such scheme. Specifically, dispersive effects of the specific peridynamic kernel are demonstrated, while the internal energy behavior of the specified peridynamic operator is studied.

Comparing the pre-SNe feedback and environmental pressures for 6000 HII regions across 19 nearby spiral galaxies

The feedback from young stars (i.e. pre-supernova) is thought to play a crucial role in molecular cloud destruction. In this paper, we assess the feedback mechanisms acting within a sample of 5810 HII regions identified from the PHANGS-MUSE survey of 19 nearby ($<$ 20 Mpc) star-forming, main sequence spiral galaxies (log($M_\star$/M$_\odot$)= 9.4 $-$ 11). These optical spectroscopic maps are essential to constrain the physical properties of the HII regions, which we use to investigate their internal pressure terms. We estimate the photoionised gas ($P_\mathrm{therm}$), direct radiation ($P_\mathrm{rad}$), and mechanical wind pressure ($P_\mathrm{wind}$), which we compare to the confining pressure of their host environment ($P_\mathrm{de}$). The HII regions remain unresolved within our ${\sim}50{-}100$ pc resolution observations, so we place upper ($P_\mathrm{max}$) and lower ($P_\mathrm{min}$) limits on each of the pressures by using a minimum (i.e. clumpy structure) and maximum (i.e. smooth structure) size, respectively. We find that the $P_\mathrm{max}$ measurements are broadly similar, and for $P_\mathrm{min}$ the $P_\mathrm{therm}$ is mildly dominant. We find that the majority of HII regions are over-pressured, $P_\mathrm{tot}/P_\mathrm{de} = (P_\mathrm{therm}+P_\mathrm{wind}+P_\mathrm{rad})/P_\mathrm{de} > 1$, and expanding, yet there is a small sample of compact HII regions with $P_\mathrm{tot,max}/P_\mathrm{de} < 1$ ($\sim$1% of the sample). These mostly reside in galaxy centres ($R_\mathrm{gal}<1$kpc), or, specifically, environments of high gas surface density; log($\Sigma_\mathrm{gas}/\mathrm{M_\odot} \mathrm{pc}^{-2}$)$\sim$2.5 (measured on kpc-scales). Lastly, we compare to a sample of literature measurements for $P_\mathrm{therm}$ and $P_\mathrm{rad}$ to investigate how dominant pressure term transitions over around 5dex in spatial dynamic range and 10 dex in pressure.

On cubic AdS interactions of mixed-symmetry higher spins

The problem of finding consistent cubic AdS interactions of massless mixed-symmetry higher-spin fields is recast into a system of partial differential equations that can be solved for given spins of the particles entering the cubic vertices. For simplicity, we consider fields with two families of indices for which some examples of interactions are explicitly discussed.

The Lick AGN Monitoring Project 2011: Reverberation Mapping of Markarian 50

The Lick AGN Monitoring Project 2011 observing campaign was carried out over the course of 11 weeks in Spring 2011. Here we present the first results from this program, a measurement of the broad-line reverberation lag in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 50. Combining our data with supplemental observations obtained prior to the start of the main observing campaign, our dataset covers a total duration of 4.5 months. During this time, Mrk 50 was highly variable, exhibiting a maximum variability amplitude of a factor of 4 in the U-band continuum and a factor of 2 in the H-beta line. Using standard cross-correlation techniques, we find that H-beta and H-gamma lag the V-band continuum by tau_cen = 10.64(-0.93,+0.82) and 8.43(-1.28,+1.30) days, respectively, while the lag of He II 4686 is unresolved. The H-beta line exhibits a symmetric velocity-resolved reverberation signature with shorter lags in the high-velocity wings than in the line core, consistent with an origin in a broad-line region dominated by orbital motion rather than infall or outflow. Assuming a virial normalization factor of f=5.25, the virial estimate of the black hole mass is (3.2+-0.5)*10^7 solar masses. These observations demonstrate that Mrk 50 is among the most promising nearby active galaxies for detailed investigations of broad-line region structure and dynamics.

Broad-Line Reverberation in the Kepler-Field Seyfert Galaxy Zw 229-015

The Seyfert 1 galaxy Zw 229-015 is among the brightest active galaxies being monitored by the Kepler mission. In order to determine the black hole mass in Zw 229-015 from H-beta reverberation mapping, we have carried out nightly observations with the Kast Spectrograph at the Lick 3m telescope during the dark runs from June through December 2010, obtaining 54 spectroscopic observations in total. We have also obtained nightly V-band imaging with the Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope at Lick Observatory and with the 0.9m telescope at the Brigham Young University West Mountain Observatory over the same period. We detect strong variability in the source, which exhibited more than a factor of 2 change in broad H-beta flux. From cross-correlation measurements, we find that the H-beta light curve has a rest-frame lag of 3.86(+0.69,-0.90) days with respect to the V-band continuum variations. We also measure reverberation lags for H-alpha and H-gamma and find an upper limit to the H-delta lag. Combining the H-beta lag measurement with a broad H-beta width of sigma = 1590+/-47 km/s measured from the root-mean-square variability spectrum, we obtain a virial estimate of M_BH = 1.00(-0.24,+0.19)*10^7 solar masses for the black hole in Zw 229-015. As a Kepler target, Zw 229-015 will eventually have one of the highest-quality optical light curves ever measured for any active galaxy, and the black hole mass determined from reverberation mapping will serve as a benchmark for testing relationships between black hole mass and continuum variability characteristics in active galactic nuclei.

Unusually Luminous Giant Molecular Clouds in the Outer Disk of M33

We use high spatial resolution (~7pc) CARMA observations to derive detailed properties for 8 giant molecular clouds (GMCs) at a galactocentric radius corresponding to approximately two CO scale lengths, or ~0.5 optical radii (r25), in the Local Group spiral galaxy M33. At this radius, molecular gas fraction, dust-to-gas ratio and metallicity are much lower than in the inner part of M33 or in a typical spiral galaxy. This allows us to probe the impact of environment on GMC properties by comparing our measurements to previous data from the inner disk of M33, the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies. The outer disk clouds roughly fall on the size-linewidth relation defined by extragalactic GMCs, but are slightly displaced from the luminosity-virial mass relation in the sense of having high CO luminosity compared to the inferred virial mass. This implies a different CO-to-H2 conversion factor, which is on average a factor of two lower than the inner disk and the extragalactic average. We attribute this to significantly higher measured brightness temperatures of the outer disk clouds compared to the ancillary sample of GMCs, which is likely an effect of enhanced radiation levels due to massive star formation in the vicinity of our target field. Apart from brightness temperature, the properties we determine for the outer disk GMCs in M33 do not differ significantly from those of our comparison sample. In particular, the combined sample of inner and outer disk M33 clouds covers roughly the same range in size, linewidth, virial mass and CO luminosity than the sample of Milky Way GMCs. When compared to the inner disk clouds in M33, however, we find even the brightest outer disk clouds to be smaller than most of their inner disk counterparts. This may be due to incomplete sampling or a potentially steeper cloud mass function at larger radii.

Multimode quantum properties of a self-imaging OPO: squeezed vacuum and EPR beams generation

We investigate the spatial quantum properties of the light emitted by a perfectly spatially degenerate optical parametric oscillator (self-imaging OPO). We show that this device produces local squeezing for areas bigger than a coherence are that depends on the crystal length and pump width. Furthermore, it generates local EPR beams in the far field. We show, calculating the eigenmodes of the system, that it is highly multimode for realistic experimental parameters.

A New Embedded Measurement Structure for eDRAM Capacitor

The embedded DRAM (eDRAM) is more and more used in System On Chip (SOC). The integration of the DRAM capacitor process into a logic process is challenging to get satisfactory yields. The specific process of DRAM capacitor and the low capacitance value (~30F) of this device induce problems of process monitoring and failure analysis. We propose a new test structure to measure the capacitance value of each DRAM cell capacitor in a DRAM array. This concept has been validated by simulation on a 0.18$μ$m eDRAM technology.

Continuous-wave phase-sensitive parametric image amplification

We study experimentally parametric amplification in the continuous regime using a transverse-degenerate type-II Optical Parametric Oscillator operated below threshold. We demonstrate that this device is able to amplify either in the phase insensitive or phase sensitive way first a single mode beam, then a multimode image. Furthermore the total intensities of the amplified image projected on the signal and idler polarizations are shown to be correlated at the quantum level.
